A special kind of smile Dentist helps those in need of dental care in other nations BY PHILLIP HARTMAN For Kaleidoscope
CLINTON, Iowa – Several years ago, Dr. Michael Callan found himself feeling like an orphan – and soon after, was inspired to help actual orphans worldwide. “My mom died in 1999, and my dad in 2005,” the 56-yearold Clinton-based dentist said of how he began working with the Medical Teams International group to provide dental services overseas. After his father’s death, he heard a speaker at the Church of the Open Door in Clinton discuss an orphaned boy who had been raised in the jungle by monkeys. “I though, what if I went and
helped real orphans?” Callan recalled. In 2006, the dentist started going to a group of orphanages in Cambodia through Medical Teams International. Callan said the group is similar to Doctors without Borders, an international, non-governmental, humanitarian medical organization best known for its projects in conflict zones and countries affected by endemic diseases. Now, Callan generally travels every November to Cambodia and every February to the Philippines. He’s also spent time in Kenya and Haiti, providing general dental care. “I go two to three times a

Graduating in 1988 from dental school at the University of Michigan, Callan has worked as a dentist for 30 years, and an orthodontist for 27 of those. He now runs Michael A. Callan DDS, MS and PC in Clinton. He’s also passing on what he’s learned, teaching orthodontic and pediatric dentistry classes every Monday at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Pediatric dentistry is a focus of Callan’s overseas work, which he calls missionary dentistry. “They need a general dentist. We generally go to orphanages or really impoverished areas. We give lessons on good dental hygiene, and how to clean teeth. We’re not able to do bridges. I can take out a front tooth,” Callan said. Medical Teams International works with an in-country partner to provide services. Callan also has worked with other churches in the U.S., such as the Archdiocese of Joliet, sending a medical dental team to the Philippines. The children whom Callan helps often don’t start as orphans. “By the time they get to the orphanage, they’re in rough shape. Often, they have rice, fish, and some vegetables, but there’s not a lot of money for things that are hard

Callan and his wife, Lauri, have three children, Katie, 28, Laura, 26, and Will, 23. “My daughters are both missionary dentistry team members,” Callan said. While all the people he helps are special there’s usually at least one on every trip who touches Callan’s heart. He recalled one little girl who had a cleft lip and cleft

palate that hadn’t been repaired. “She had some teeth that had to come out before the surgery. They treat some people like that as if they’re cursed. She was very timid. I prayed, ‘Lord, if this one thing could go easy for her, please let this tooth come out,’” Callan said. “There’s hardly any trip where there isn’t overwhelming sense of love, a touch of God.”

Straight from the farm Local farmer raises cattle for reopened butcher shop BY JESSIE KERN For Kaleidoscope
ROCK FALLS – The Butcher Shop is back and serving quality meat to the community after closing almost 10 years ago. David Hoffman was forced to close The Butcher Shop, 3309 W. Rock Falls Road, back in 2009 due to a recession. The Butcher Shop was part of the Rock River Provision meat distributor and the family business had been running for more than 50 years. Fast forward nearly a decade and three locals decided to pick up where the business left off and bring back a local source for quality meat, with Dale Pfundstein utilizing
cattle from his own farm. Pfundstein, 65, brought the idea to his livestock nutritionist, Kent Farley and wife Pattie of Chadwick. Together the three re-opened the shop and the response has been good so far. “The people are unbelievable [and] supportive of the butcher shop, because I’ve raised cattle all my life,” Pfundstein said. Pfundstein said he considered opening a restaurant, but decided on a butcher shop so that he could provide restaurants with meat. He said The Butcher Shop has been providing Triple P BBQ, 3312 W. Rock Falls Road, with most of its meat. “I’m still running the farm

She said she and her husband had
to think about the idea for a while, but ultimately decided to go into business with Pfundstein. “It’s progressing well,” Farley said. “We have a good team; we have good employees.” FARM continued on 104

Farley said the retail is easier than wholesale, but they have been trying to expand to sell to other restaurants. “We’ve done taste tests at restaurants,” Pfundstein said. “You take my burger compared to what they were using and there’s no comparison, taste, flavor and weight.” He said the best animal you can get is the whole animal ground into the patty, rather than a certain cut. Pfundstein said he never had the opportunity to see the other side of raising cattle, and in the meat business he has been learning more every day. Farley said construction and regulations were the harder aspects of re-opening the business, but the group has been able to overcome any hiccups in the process. “It’s a whole learning process,” Farley said. “Well the farm is your own business, it’s kind of the same thing,” Pfundstein said. “You have your regulations on the farm like you have regulations here.” Pfundstein said regulations for The Butcher Shop are stricter than for the farm, but they have made it work. He said most grocery stores sell fresh meat, but The Butcher Shop sells fresh and frozen. He said the way meat is aged affects the flavor, whether it is hung to

Ours is dry aged 21 to 28 days,” Pfundstein said. “A box is just cut the piece up, put it in the box and ship it.” He said when the meat is hung to age the blood and juices drip down, but when it’s aged in a box the meat sits in the blood and juices. “We do get some box meat in but not very much,” Pfundstein said. “It’s mainly all mine.” He said his farm typically has around 14,000 head of cattle at any one time. The Butcher Shop is currently focused on growing, as many people are still unaware it has re-opened. “[We’re] just trying to grow and get more customers, because we still have people who don’t know we’re here,” Farley said. She said some people are confused about the business – one group of women came in asking if they sold sandwiches.
“People think it’s just for the restaurant or don’t know it’s open,” Pfundstein said. “It’s still getting the word around.” He said business picked up for the summer because it is barbecue season. “I told Patti after Memorial Day weekend, ‘Boy, it’d be nice to have Memorial Day weekend every weekend,’ because people really stocked up,” he said. “Of course, we had graduation at the same time, too.” Pfundstein said beef is most popular among customers, especially filet mignon and rib-eyes. He said reopening hasn’t been easy, but the people are happy to see the shop back up and running. Farley said that through the process of reopening, they have met a lot of new people and made some new friends, and it’s been fun“to see the people that come in, the customers that come in, and to hear their stories.” Pfundstein was a previous board member of the Illinois Beef Association, and his family has been nominated for the Family of the Year Award. He said on top of running the farm and The Butcher Shop, his son runs a cow and calf operation and they also have a compost operation, turning manure into fertilizer to sell. “When I started this I went from a plate to a platter. It’s just a few more things going on that’s all.”

Mechanic making a difference Community embraces new auto repair shop BY LUCINDA HALL For Kaleidoscope
ASHTON – Mike Hambley, owner of Ashton Auto Repair, knows more than just a little about repairing automobiles. It’s in his DNA. “I was pretty much born with a wrench in my hand,” Hambley said. Much of what he knows was learned at the knee of his father who owned a repair shop when Hambley, 50, was just a child. In many respects, he was a natural at mastering the details of being a mechanic, while taking classes over the years to keep up with the changing facets of the business. It wasn’t until September 2017, that he decided after more than 25 years as a mechanic in Amboy to try his

The building, at 507 Cartwright Ave., in Ashton, had set empty for several years. “I have many people happy they can drop their car off, walk to work and come back after work and pick up their car – done and ready to go,” he said. “I do the work right the first time and try to keep my prices reasonable.” What’s more, he works with the village to provide maintenance for the fire trucks, ambulance, school buses and plow trucks to ensure all the vehicles are in top shape and pass all safety inspections. “It makes me feel good that the community is safer and their vehicles are working well,” he said. For now, it is still a family operation. Hambley does all the repair work. His daughter, April Miller, helps with the administrative side of the business as well as insurance claims as needed. He continues to purchase new equipment as the business grows, including a tow truck. “I bought the truck to help customers out,” he said. “Now, I have the added convenience of being able to tow vehicles in for repairs and save customers extra costs.” He is eager to please. That includes working weekend hours if a customer

A customer purchased a RV the day before a holiday weekend and was hoping to take a trip in it, but needed new tires. Hambley was quick to help and his customer was motoring away the next day as planned. Another time, an older lady called needing her car washed.

“We don’t wash cars,” Hambley said with a laugh. Still, he obliged. After dropping off her car, he took her back home, washed the car inside and out, then dropped it off to her. It’s that type of service that seems to be working well for Hambley and Ashton Auto Repair. “I mean, if someone needs it done and I have the time, I’ll do it.”

Early on, coordinating train transportation was a primary business focus. Today, the business is owned by father and daughter, Robert and Stacey Schroeder, and the array of services and programs offered is practically endless.
