STERLING | THE LOFT AT K’S KORNERS
Move it and they will come
Business owners continue to transform 67-year-old barn into unique venue
C
BY ANDREA MILLS For SV Weddings
ouples looking for a touch of country in their wedding reception or an unusual place to tie the knot should mosey over to the barn at K’s Korners. The Loft at K’s Korners, with its impressive spiral staircase, provides a lofty location that will seat 300. But this 67-year-old barn wasn’t built to be a wedding destination or reception area. It was last used as part of the Wahl Equestrian Center/Double G Arena site and was among the buildings up for auction when that site closed. Owners Marion said Andy Younger went to that auction. “He bought the barn,” she said, because he didn’t want to see it destroyed. The couple had to move the barn to K’s Korners, a journey that took 1½ hours and involved ComEd having to raise and lower two wires, as the barn slowly moved along the highway toward its new home. COME continued on 94 RIGHT: K’s Korners owners Marion and Andy Younger stand on the spiral staircase inside their wedding venue at K’s Korners (above). (Photos by Scott Ide/ For SV Weddings)

“A lot of people watched,” Marion said. In addition to the wires, a stop sign was moved and replaced, but one thing stayed put. “There was a coffee cup on the rafters and it was still there,” she said of the successful relocation. So, where did they put it? Well, the barn was 100-feet-by-35-feet and a section of their 1980s building was 100-feet-by-30-feet. Marion said all they had to do was tear the section down and rebuild a wall for the barn to rest on. That was done, and the barn has been at K’s Korners since May 7, 2014. “We put up two 16-foot I beams,” Marion said. “[Andy] and I did all the work.” The building first entered into its wedding reception role in the summer of 2015, with rentals in July and August. The barn didn’t have an elevator, so chairs and tables and everything else had to be hauled up the stairs.

“We used it a couple of times before we first moved in, in 2015,” Marion said. “They were so hot, it was unbearable.” That situation no longer exists in the upstairs, which can hold 300 people. “We put in heat, air conditioning and an elevator,” she said. “In every big gathering, there’s somebody who has trouble with stairs. You need an elevator.” Among the barn’s assets are decks at both ends, restrooms, a dressing room and a spiral staircase purchased in Gale-
na from a bed and breakfast. It originally cost $40,000, but the new owner didn’t want it. “We got it for 100 bucks,” Marion said. Couples interested in renting the barn don’t need to meet any particular deadline to save the space. “It depends on availability,” Marion said. “I don’t need advance notice if it’s available.” K’s Korners offers the room, a bartender and a full-service bar. The business can also can arrange for beer kegs or give guests drink chips. It’s up to the customers to provide the rest, such as tables and chairs, band, music and decorations. “We don’t do food,” Marion said. “You
can bring in your own food or you can have it catered by anyone.” The customers need to come in a day or 2 before the event to set things up and then clean up afterward. “I’m not pushy about it,” she said. “You don’t have to clean up that night.” Marion said they’ve had some colorful wedding receptions in the past and have even had people rent the barn to renew their vows. Coming up, a couple will be married at the barn on the balcony, and this summer a Roaring ’20s-themed wedding is planned. “They do a lot of different things,” she said.

Quite the Place
Eatery hosts bachelorette parties, showers, rehearsal dinners
J
BY CODY CUTTER For SV Weddings
ust west of Dixon on Palmyra Road sits a place where lasting memories have been made for the past 80 years. The Brown Shingle occupied that spot for most of those years. Since 2015, it is home to That Place on Palmyra. The log cabin-like structure was built about 10 years ago by the owners of BombDigity Bar and Grill. After that venture failed, new owners Tom and Robin Canode of Dixon decided to change the feel up to more of a restaurant. They got that far, but couldn’t quite figure out a name. “It came down to the wire and we needed to find something,” General Manager Courtney Edge of Sterling said. “People could never find this place, because it’s outside of town. ... So with Palmyra being the road where it’s at, that’s how we came up with That Place on Palmyra.” PLACE continued on 204

Edge has been in the restaurant business for 14 years. She worked at restaurants while studying marketing and business administration in college, and has ascended the ranks after starting out as a bartender under the establishment’s previous ownership. That Place on Palmyra strives to make the restaurant’s atmosphere and camaraderie as comforting as possible. Of the nearly 30 wedding-themed banquets the restaurant has hosted, one of the best bits of feedback Edge has received is how the staff becomes happily involved with what’s going on. “I really like to see the hostess having a good time,” Edge said. “A lot of times the hostesses can be stressed, but they actually get to enjoy it when things are going well and get to mingle with everybody,” she said. “Our staff really likes what we do. So it’s not like work. They get involved with it, too, and that makes a difference.” When Edge makes initial arrangements for prospective parties, she will ask how

The banquet aspect of things wasn’t quite thought of a whole lot when marketing the restaurant, but reservations have picked up once the staff got a feel of how to excel at it. “That’s a market that we didn’t really hit at the beginning,” Edge said. “We didn’t realize that we could cater to people doing weddings, and things like that.” Now, with many successful events under the restaurant’s belt, that’s changed. “Our staff, since we’ve done so many parties, we plan well in advance,” Edge said. “It makes it so much easier to enjoy themselves and not worry about if things are set up. I go over whoever we have the party for a couple of days in advance and make sure things are in line. If there’s decorations, we’ll help out with that. Our staff is very hands-on, so that makes for a very good event.”

reative Cuisine Catering has been meeting the needs of weddings, corporate occasions and other special events for 21 years with carefree service. Owners Julie Scribner and Michelle Neubauer stress that hiring a caterer for a wedding isn’t as stressful as brides might think. “It’s much easier than they expect it to be,” Scribner said. Scribner was booking a wedding for June with a bride, and it simply started with a phone call. “I think that half the battle is getting the brides to be not so stressed about it,” she said. “It’s so easy. The process usually begins with initial contact by phone. The steps include booking the wedding date, making a deposit and selecting the menu. “Sometimes, they’ll set up a meeting with us,” Scribner said. “Sometimes, they’ll do it over the phone,” Neubauer said. “If they’re not local,” Scribner added, “we set it up on the phone and we don’t ever see them until the day of the wedding. Nowadays, you can do all of that over the Internet and the phone.” Creative Cuisine’s website has the menus showing the wide variety of appetizers and main courses available. That’s where the June bride is looking to get ideas about appetizers. “She’s doing appetizers and a meal,” Scribner said. “We just initially set it up and booked her, so now we’ll go from there. She’ll make some decisions and as she makes decisions, they just let us know.” Customers look at the website, pick out

what they want and tell Scribner and Neubauer how many guests. They also can feel free to request something that’s not there. “We try to find them what they want,” Scribner said. Almost everything seems to have a deadline when planning a wedding. Caterers, too, have an ideal lead time. “Ideally, probably a year,” Scribner said. “I only have a few dates now in June that are left. We book about a year ahead. If they would just book their date, that’s our big thing.” “We very rarely turn people down,” Neubauer added. “We have people calling about this summer. We usually get them in.”

Creative Cuisine doesn’t do a lot of desserts for weddings, Scribner said. Couples usually have their cakes. “We’re not a bakery so to speak,” she said. What they are, for the past 8 years, are the owners of Woody’s Popcorn producing caramel, cheddar, caramel and cheddar mix and the new white cheddar popcorn. Scribner said they purchased Woody’s from a couple in Chadwick, who were making the popcorn out of their garage.

Creative Cuisine adapt to ‘unusual receptions’ BOOK
CONTINUED FROM 32 t
Sounds good for kids’ parties but what’s that got to do with weddings? “Popcorn bars are really popular,” Scribner said. Brides and grooms can purchase the popcorn in a 10-gallon bag for a buffet bar or they can have custom labels on smaller bags to use as wedding favors. Popcorn can be included as an appetizer, in gift bags for out-of-town guests or part of a sweets table along with candy. “Candies are a big thing,” she said. Once the big day arrives, Creative Cuisine is ready for almost any location. Outdoor weddings and barn weddings are popular now. “They’re a big thing – private barns and barns like Livengood’s [in Chadwick], which is a barn venue,” Scribner said, “and Allen Acres [in Rock Falls].” She said they’ve done some unusual receptions as well. One of those involved an airplane and a field in Coleta. “They put up a big tent and the bride and groom parachuted in for the wedding,” Scribner said. The caterers have provided food for weddings at the homes of bride and grooms, Neubauer said, and in tents in the backyard. “Sometimes, we have a really nice kitchen and sometimes we’re working out of our van,” Scribner said. After all those years of business, whatever the venue, the bride and groom do not need to be concerned about the food with Creative Cuisine Catering.

These fruit trays are among the many items available through Creative Cuisine. “We’ve got good staff and we’ve got it down pat, “ Scribner said. Two employees go out to the reception location, set the meal up, keep it stocked, then tear it down, clean up, pack up and go. Creative Cuisine provides the food, but doesn’t provide such things as tables and linens. The key is organization. “We work a week ahead making sure all the trucks are coming on time,” she said. “We’ve got people to work, we’ve got things lined up days ahead. When the day gets here, it really is easy. We’re feeding 200 people today and this is so easy, but we worked 4, 5 or 6 days ahead.” “There were times when it was very stressful,” Neubauer said. “We’ve learned,” Scribner said.

o Nancey Dorner, the arrival of 2018 meant more than just a new year, it capped the end of her first year in business as You In Photos By Nanc Inc. She’s done photos of newborns, high school seniors, reveals (parties centered around parents’ learning the gender of their baby) and, of course, weddings. “The weddings kind of accidentally happened,” she said. “It was for a family member, and they didn’t have a whole lot of money.”
They asked if she’d take their pictures. “From there, it’s been nonstop,” Dorner said. “Everybody’s story is different.” Before wedding photos, couples traditionally have engagement photos taken. “I offer a package for both, and give a discount if they do both,” she said. “I don’t care if a bride has $100. I don’t care if a bride has $2,000. I don’t have a preference. Every bride deserves to feel special on her wedding day.”

Photographer goes over details with bride LOVE
CONTINUED FROM 36 t
And she’d like that feeling to continue. “I want everybody to have a picture on their wall that they can walk by and fall in love all over again,” Dorner said. For engagements, she recommends having photos taken at least a year in advance. If the couple are doing a “save the date” announcement, they need to have photos ready 6 months before the wedding so they can have something special made up in advance of their invitation. “For 2018, I already have 16 weddings and four tentative for 2019,” she said. “I love love. I cry right along with them. I cry at their vows. I cry if a mom cries. It’s like I’m right in there with them. I try my hardest to have a one-on-one relationship with each bride.” To make that happen, she meets with brides several times before she takes any photos. “I sit down and talk to them, offer advice, offer opinions, and really get to know what they want because that’s

Do they want the person taking their pictures to be there from the very first step of the day?” With some weddings, she starts with photos of women getting hair and makeup done and men getting ready. She can document the whole day, from there, to the wedding, to family pictures after the ceremony, to the reception afterward. It’s all about what the customer wants documented. Some want everything
documented and others just want the bare minimum, she said. “I really try to do their entire day,” Dorner said. “I try to persuade them to do their entire day, because it’s memories you’re not going to get back other than in your mind. But to tell the story for the rest of your days and for those after you with the photograph, there is just an amazing story.” Dorner said she’s had brides thank her for having so many photos to look over, saying it’s like going through the wedding all over again. “I don’t do it for a paycheck,” she said. “I do it for the bride and groom and for their families’ memories.” The process begins with contact from the engaged couple. Dorner will ask to meet with both the bride and the groom. “It’s not just the bride’s day,” she said. “It’s his day, too. He has input. He has thoughts.” She wants to help the couple feel comfortable with her, so they won’t feel too uncomfortable when she’s taking photos. DETAILS continued on 384

“If you make them [grooms] feel more comfortable, then they’re going to cooperate a lot more with you on the wedding day and on the engagement day,” she said. “And then they’ll feel more comfortable with you to show more
affection, to show more love.” They’ll discuss pricing, the couple’s wishes and they’ll agree on a cost. Then, they’ll sign a contract and set a date for the engagement photos and a backup date in case of bad weather. The couple are given full copyright access to every picture she edits. “Everything is spelled out in great detail, so I’ll know what to expect and
they know what I’m expecting, and from there, we go into their wedding day,” Dorner said. “I try to be thorough, because you want to know that your photographer is going to have your back.” She said little things happen during the course of the wedding day.

Each wedding day a different adventure THOROUGH
CONTINUED FROM 38 t
“They know that if their photographer is involved, they know that there’s one person who truly knows what’s going on for their day,” she said. “I give each of their wedding party a copy of the timeline that we’re doing pictures all day. That is what time we’re doing these. This is what
time you need to be dressed by, we’re meeting at this location at this time.” After the wedding, Dorner edits the photos and the couple get their pictures on a memory stick and with a photo release card. She also prints two to four of their favorites in 11-by-14 inches for them to put on their wall. “I try to accommodate in a timely fashion,” Dorner said. One thing’s for sure, each wedding day
is a different adventure. “It gets a little crazy sometimes, especially when some people [start drinking] in advance,” Dorner said. “Everybody is different though. You make the best of it and you laugh a lot. And that’s what keeps people calm because you don’t let anything happen. You just let it roll off your back. Some of the best pictures are captured when people aren’t paying attention.”

hose brides who might want to save some money on florals might want to consider a pick-your-own option. After all, what are bridesmaids for? Maybe you and the wedding party just need a peaceful place to de-stress, and do a sweet picnic lunch. How about a combo bridal shower and picnic? Brill’s Penrose Flower Field in Sterling has been providing such a spot for a couple of years now. Maybe you want a more traditional flower shop, like Behrz-Bloomz (formerly known as Behrens’ Blumen’ Stuff), which moved in 2016 from its longtime Rock Falls location to a new location on the intersection of Locust Street and Lynn Boulevard in Sterling. Jim and Kathy Behren still work in the flower shop,
but after 45 years of owning and running the business they handed ownership over to Stephanie Dusing, who worked for Jim and Kathy for 15 years. There’s also been some changes recently at Dixon Floral Co. New owner Shelly Long said one of the most notable changes to the business is how attentive they are to each customer’s individual needs. The Sauk Valley provides many options for flowers. Here’s some to choose from:

hen Meggan Dickson-Grennan styled her first updo in high school, much of her inspiration came from either the latest magazines or an image from elsewhere that lodged in her memory. Sometimes, the ides came from others. “I was just playing around with friends’ hair,” Dickson-Grennan said. “A lot of it comes naturally. Either you’ve got it, or you don’t, but it can be taught.” These days, Dickson-Grennan, one of six stylists at Red Stone Salon and Spa in Oregon, has clients who come in for a simple cut and some who come in

Stylist: Braided hairstyles more popular now SALON
CONTINUED FROM 44 t
Things are definitely a little more modern on the inside. Dickson-Grennan, a stylist at the salon for 15 years, has seen the trend in wedding hairstyles go from largely updos – or “ups” in styling lingo – to a mix of different ones. More organic styles have taken shape recently, ones that look a little more natural with not necessarily every hair in place and a softer look. Braided hairstyles are more popular now, too. “We’re seeing a lot of braids, and a lot of knots and messy buns,” Dickson-Grennan said. “Some girls like to wear their hair half-up and half-down, and some all up, and some all down.” Changes are common over the years, she said. “For a long time, it was all up and very tight, and the past 5 or so years it’s been a little bit more organic and a little more free.”
Sometimes styles are combined. Dickson-Grennan has had clients who have a variety of different styles in mind and ask if they could make them all work. Even particulars from a certain style can be included in another style. Even with increased creativity, the updo is not on its way out. “It depends on the amount of hair you’ve got, whether or not it can be brought into an up-style,” Dickson-Grennan said. “Even with short hair, there are tricks that we have up our sleeve that we can still make it look like an up-swept formal style with not having a lot of hair to work with.” Red Stone also offers haircuts for men, women and children, as well as reconditioning services, blow-outs, perm waves, Brazilian blowouts, and solid, dimensional, and men’s color services. Full and mini manicures are also offered, as well as polish changes and no-chip manicures. Pedicures are available in both traditional and spa. Red Stone’s website, redstonesalonandspa.com, lists all ser-
vices offered; and pamphlets with services and fees can be picked up on site. Wedding parties usually come in the day before their event to get their nails, facials and massages done. Hair and make-up is done the day of the wedding. Trial runs are available for those who can’t quite pin down exactly what they want. The staff will take pictures during those runs for clients to review. “We’ve seen a lot of brides that are pretty easy going,” Dickson-Grennan said. “That can be kind of surprising, because that’s a big day and those photos are going to be around forever, so you got to have the style right.” Salon services are on the main floor, and spa services are on the second floor. As one travels up the steps to the spa area, a sign greets them which reads, “May all who enter as guests, leave as friends.” “We have a good repertoire with all of our clients,” Dickson-Grennan said. “With the amount of time each of us has been here, you get to know each other pretty well.”

ith computers and phones at hand, setting up travel for a bride and groom’s romantic getaway seems easy. But there’s one problem - they lack the personal guidance couples can get through a local travel agency. Destinations Travel Services, owned by Avril Winkle, a graduate of Rupert Stanley College in Belfast, Northern Ireland, has helped many couples select those special locations. “I’ve always done travel,” said Winkle,

We opened in November 2005 and I’ve been in the industry 28 years-plus. Actually, I’ve done work experience for my parents’ travel agency, when I was in school, when they offered me an after-school and Saturday job. That’s where I kind of started.”
Winkle came to the United States in 2001, when she married for the first time. “I was brought to the United States by my ex-husband,” Winkle said. “I always say if I hadn’t met my ex-husband, I wouldn’t have met my now, wonderful, amazing husband. There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel.” She started work at Twin City Travel. Now, in her own business, she has two full-time employees and one part-time employee. “We have a good variety of staff covering all sorts of different areas, so I’m kind of confident that no matter where somebody wants to go we’ve got it pretty much covered,” she said. “I tell them the information online is only as good as the information put into the computer, and if you don’t know entirely what you’re putting in, it’s like WebMd (lots of choices, not knowing which one fits you).” she said. “Travel is kind of like that, too. You know you’re putting information into the computer and do you know you’re really going to get what you’re paying for?” The difference when a bride and groom come through Destinations’ door is a well-traveled staff. “It’s nice to know when people come in nine out of 10 times someone in this office has been there,” Winkle said. “And if we haven’t, we have so many friends in the industry, we all know who to call and who to get information from. You really can’t get that online.” The most popular honeymoon destinations for couples in the Sauk Valley tend to have warm weather and a beautiful beach, such as Dominican Republic. “St. Lucia has been very popular,” Winkle said. “Jamaica is always a very popular request in this area, as is Mexico.” She said she’s not an order-taker. She listens, but then she asks why. “I want to know what they enjoy doing,” Winkle said. “Do they like to sit in the hotel and sit around the pool and have a few drinks and enjoy the entertainment? Do they like to get out and do excursions?” She suggests a simple exercise. “I always tell my honeymooners to go home and sit down, get out a bottle of wine or a beer or whatever it is they enjoy,” Winkle said. “Sit at opposite ends of the table with a piece of paper in hand and write down what they envision out of this trip that they’re wanting to take together and then cross them over and look at each other’s list.” She said the lists can be very different, such as one wanting to take romantic walks while the other wants to party and fish. Winkle wants input from both because it may be the only time in their married life that they’ll be on their own to get to know each other. “A lot of times when couples are taking a honeymoon, it’s surprising that they may have only taken one or two trips together,” Winkle said. “Other times, they haven’t traveled internationally together, and so it’s very inter-

18 tips for an affordable wedding 1. Avoid guest list bloat For some people, it can be very tempting to invite hundreds of people to the ceremony. With each addition to your guest list, though, you’re adding a person that’s of lesser importance to you, compared to the people you’ve already invited. Instead of just adding more and more people, consider inviting fewer people and making the event more intimate. Try cutting your list in half, and see if you’re happy with it.
2. Ask for wedding help instead of wedding gifts Do you have friends or family blessed with musical talent? Ask them to provide the musical accompaniment for your ceremony. How about a pal who’s a good amateur photographer, or videographer? Let them give the gift of their talent, offer to pay for their supplies, or work out a nominal fee or a trade of talents (they shoot your wedding, you sing at theirs...) services.
3. Have the ceremony at home, or outdoors You might find that the cost of renting a building for your ceremony and reception is expensive. Instead, consider using your own home (or the home of a parent) for your ceremony, or perhaps a public park with a beautiful view. In each case, you can also have your reception outdoors, often eliminating the cost of renting a place as well as creating a memorable ceremony.
4. Do catering yourself, or hire a family-owned restaurant If you have a flair for cooking, you can handle your own food preparation with the help of family and friends. This drastically reduces the food costs for the ceremony. If this isn’t your forte, look around your community for a family-owned restaurant and ask the owners directly to cater your wedding. Family-owned restaurants are always the first place to check – they will almost always go the extra mile to make your wedding special and will also charge a reasonable rate. 5. Go minimal with flowers Instead of having huge piles of flowers everywhere (something that will really last for only an afternoon), instead simply go with a single rose for each bridesmaid and a very small bouquet for the bride. If you know someone with a rose bush, you can actually easily make your own bouquets the day before the ceremony by cutting the roses yourself and trimming away the thorns.
6. Choose very personal books as gifts for groomsmen and bridesmaids It’s often customary to give gifts to one’s bridesmaids or groomsmen. One very effective (and frugal) gift is to give personally important books to each person. Choose one that expresses something personal that you feel is appropriate for each member of the wedding party and hand-write an inscription on the inside, noting that the gift is for the wedding and why it’s an appropriate book.
7. Make your own invitations With a quality home printer and some time, you can make very classy invitations on your own. You can also pick up a simple blank invitation kit at an office supply store and make your own invitations. No pictures or anything – just a very classic font and simple text. It looks stylish and doesn’t cost much at all.
8. Use a good home stereo system for the reception music Rather than hiring a DJ, just use your own home stereo (or the stereo of a close friend). Put speakers around the dance floor area – there’s no need to spread them around the reception room. Then just create a few mix CDs from your own collection, or set up a playlist in a program on your computer – there’s all the music you need.
9. Have vendor cards in exchange for reduced rates If you’re hiring people to provide services for your reception (musicians, a

At the reception, put a small card in each person’s place that lists the businesses responsible for each service at the wedding, along with their contact information. Since this tends to be very effective advertising, many businesses will happily provide services at reduced rates in exchange for this opportunity.
10. Contact a local university for musical accompaniment needs If you’d like live musical accompaniment for the ceremony (and perhaps for the reception), one place to look
for low-cost musicians is at the local university’s music department. Contact them and ask if there are any students who are studying a particular instrument or vocal work and see if they’re available to provide music for your wedding. It can help them with their resume and save you on this part of your wedding.
11. Patiently shop for any decoration needs Many area merchants have sales somewhat regularly throughout the year – and they all sell supplies that can be helpful with your wedding. Know what you’re looking for as far in advance as possible and let the sales come to you. AFFORDABLE continued on 544

If you’re getting married in your church, ask the ladies’ auxiliary for help Most churches have a women’s organization that is very happy to help with wedding preparation in exchange for a reasonable small donation. Get them involved – they can take a lot of worry off your shoulders for a relatively low price. At our wedding, the “church ladies” were a great help with church decoration and other helpful things on the day of the ceremony.
13. Buy dresses together when a sale is on Similar to the tip for shopping for decorations, you can often save a significant amount of money by shopping patiently for dresses as well. Many dress stores have sales on holidays such as Memorial Day – keep an eye out for such sales. You may also want to shop together so that you can all save during the sale.
14. Rent tuxedos as a group Unless you have a specific reason for owning a tuxedo (and few people do), you should rent one. It’s often useful to rent the tuxedos as a group through the same business, as you’ll often get a group rate. It’s often useful to rent through a place that’s fairly close to the site of the wedding so last-minute adjustments can easily be made.
15. Make a simple honeymoon, not an ostentatious one A huge, over-the-top honeymoon might sound fun, but it’s far, far cheaper (and often more enjoyable) to have a much more laid-back honeymoon. Instead of planning a big trip, just hop in the car and spend a week or two together just driving around and enjoying being married. The fewer plans, the better – and the cheaper.
16. Involve your close friends and family in the preparation As you’re developing plans, you should get your closest friends and family involved with the details. Quite often,
they’ll have surprisingly good ideas that can save you money and effort – perhaps they’ll know someone that can cut you a deal on a certain part, or maybe they’ll just volunteer to help out with that piece. Good friends and family are always there to help, so you might as well use it.
17. Plan, plan, plan List everything you can think of and walk through these items step by step. The earlier you get started – and the more things you think about early on – the less “last-minute stress” you’ll have and the more time you’ll have to find sales and discounts and other good ideas.
18. Don’t stress Something will probably go wrong at the last minute – a little detail of some sort won’t work out. Don’t worry about it – just assume something little is going to go wrong and don’t respond by throwing cash at it. Most likely, no one will even notice the little issue, and quite often someone in your wedding party (or someone helping out) will come up with a pretty good solution to fix things. – Source: thesimpledollar.com

The countdown to the big day CTW Features
Congratulations! You’re in love, you’ve set a wedding date and soon you’ll be married. Between the romance and the ritual, however, you must survive a potentially harrowing experience: planning your big day. Pulling together a wedding celebration can be a hectic, intimidating task. But it doesn’t have to be. Planning for the perfect wedding starts with the bride and groom agreeing on a unified vision before they begin booking caterers, bands and photographers. This will deter stressful disagreements while planning the minutia of the ceremony and reception. When you’ve decided on the overall tone for your special day, it’s time to get down to business. Think of yourself as a project manager. Establish an overall framework for completing the work and set specific deadlines, schedules and goals. Taken one small job at a time, the detail-laden task becomes less overwhelming. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help keep the stars in your eyes, your feet on the ground and your wedding plans on track.

Groom’s Checklist BY ROBERT MORTIZ The Knot
So, you finally got up the nerve to pop the big one. Now it’s time to start doing some heavy wedding lifting. Here’s a list of your most essential to-dos.
12 months before
3 months before
n Figure out where you’re going to have your ceremony and reception. The best spots fill up fast, especially for summer and fall, so decide your wedding size and start looking. n Organize your guys. After you ask your best man to do the honors, make up your groomsman list. For crowd control, you’ll want at least one usher per 50 guests. n Get what you want. Crazy as it seems, people start buying you gifts immediately, and registering may be the only way to keep your friends’ and relatives’ questionable tastes in check.
n Get ready for the freeloaders. Your out-of-town guests need a place to stay, so unless you’ve got a couple dozen spare bedrooms, decide on a hotel and reserve a block of rooms. Let them know this in your invitations. n By this time, the guest list should be finalized – i.e., it has the bride, groom and parents’ approval. Time to send out the invitations. n Get dressed. So what will it be? Tails and top hat or traditional Scottish kilt? Decide and buy (or rent), then pick out your groomsmen’s getups. n Give a jeweler your finger to be measured. Let your fiancée do the same, and then order your wedding rings. Decide on inscriptions. n If you’re going to tie the knot, you may have to get your blood tested. It’s the law in some states.
9 months before n Meet and greet suitable officiants. Priest, rabbi, justice of the peace, officially sanctioned Elvis impersonator – the choice is yours. n Book the talent. It’ll probably fall to you to choose the band or disc jockey. Be sure to get references and hear music beforehand – and run it by your bride before you sign on the dotted line. n Start drawing up your guest list. This is something you’ll probably want to get your parents in on, too.
6 months before
6 to 8 weeks before n Get a sparkling smile. Cut down on coffee and try a whitening toothpaste. Want to really shine? Consider a professional bleaching with a dentist or use an over-the-counter whitening system. n Don’t be cheap. This is one of the most important moments in your life, so put some real thought into the matter and then buy your bride a wedding gift. n Don’t be cheap, part 2. Search high and low for the perfect groomsmen gifts. These guys are going to put out come D-Day to make sure you look your best. Make sure you get them something decent to show for it. n Don’t lose it. Pick up your wedding rings and put them in a safe place. While you’re at it, check the engraving carefully for typos.
n Plan your honeymoon. If you’re leaving the country, now would be a good time to check or find your passport – or get them if you and your girl don’t have ’em – and see what kind of shots or visas you might need. n Who’s driving? Arrange for transportation to the ceremony and reception. Think limousine or horse and buggy. While you’re at it, figure out where 2 weeks before you’re going after the reception – airport? hotel? – and make plans for n Do something really romantic with getting there. FYI, tradition dictates that your wife-to-be. But before you do, your best man drives you. pick up your marriage license.
n Have a good time, but don’t do something stupid. It’s your bachelor party and last chance to go crazy without the ball and chain legally attached.
1 week before n Get ready to relax. Double-check the honeymoon reservations, start packing your bags, and pick up traveler’s checks. n Pay your officiant. Put his or her fee in an envelope and give it to your best man for post-vow delivery. n You are expected to speak to the crowd at your wedding reception. Sound sensitive and intelligent, start coming up with that impromptu toast to her family now. n Rally the troops. Give your groomsmen the rehearsal dinner low-down and make sure everybody’s got his monkey suit pressed and ready. By the way, get a haircut already.
The day before n Make her cry. Write a sweet little “I love you” note (or other touching trick) and leave it somewhere she’ll find it on wedding morning, particularly if you won’t be seeing her before the ceremony.
