Lombard has a rich history behind it, starting in the 1830s and moving to the 1900s with William and Helen Plum touring the world and bringing over 200 varieties of lilacs back to our beautiful village. These lilacs are celebrated every year with many events, including the Lilac Parade, Lilac Ball, and our yearly crowning of our Lilac Princesses by the Lombard Jr. Women’s Club.

Lombard Historical Society Preserves, Educates, Entertains

id you know that the first woman to vote in the state of Illinois was from Lombard? Or that the creator of the Little Orphan Annie comic was also a Lombard resident? Lombard is rich in history, and the Lombard Historical Society was created to preserve that history and educate those interested in the village’s roots. LHS operates out of a Victorian cottage at 23 Maple Street, the first property of the historical society. In 1981 an 1887 carriage house was moved to the site and renovated in order to house the many activities hosted by LHS. “In 2012 we received a grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to expand the building, which gave us space to house the history of Lombard,” said Alison Costanzo, LHS’s executive director. LHS also operates the Peck homestead, which was deeded to the society in 1996, Costanzo added. The house has

been renovated to its original 1839 configuration. “The house is a verified Underground Railroad site,” Costanzo said, noting that the society’s website offers extensive information on the village’s various locations and history. LHS also helps maintain the original 1851 Lombard Cemetery. The LHS’s buildings were closed last year until July due to COVID-19. “We reopened in July and brought back our ice cream social events (with modifications, of course),” Costanzo said. “We also opened the Lilac Emporium Gift Shop in September. It’s the only place in Lombard where you can buy Lombard merchandise.” While the pandemic has curtailed programming (typically, more than 500 children participate in its Black History Month program), virtual programming has allowed children’s programs to continue. In fact, the pandemic is responsible for actually expanding adult programming, according to Costanzo. “COVID has opened a whole new de-

While bad weather and night driving has prevented some seniors from attending in-person programs in the past, virtual Zoom programs have opened up new opportunities for those who formerly shied away. “We had a virtual Valentine’s tea, and we’ll do another for Mother’s Day and Lilac time,” Costanzo said. “Our tea hosted 70, and we never would have been able to do that in person.” LHS will bring back its concert series this fall and the carriage house and Peck House are currently open, with COVID restrictions. LHS is even hosting a wedding. “We have a lot in the hopper, even with COVID,” Costanzo said. LHS is very active on its website, as well as Facebook and Instagram. “We post daily and sometimes multiple times a day. There’s a lot of information and you can learn a lot about Lombard history. Even as the COVID-19 pandemic and daily considerations related to it evolve, Lombard Park District staff stand ready to adapt and ensure visitors to their facilities have a memorable and safe experience. Park District officials urge members and visitors to monitor the district website, www.lombardparks.com for updates. Here’s a look at some of the activity options that were in store as of press time.

GO TO THE PARK

From Babcock’s Grove Memorial Garden to Westmore Woods –that’s almost A to Z – the LombardPark District offers 18 parks, each with unique attributes. Visit the Park District website to find an interactive map that includes park location and detailed information.

A crown jewel of the Park District is Lilacia Park, 150 S.Park Ave., which provides visitors not only with walking paths and spacious benches, but peaceful views, to boot. The park each year sees 700 lilacs and 25,000 tulips in bloom, and is the home to the annual Lombard’s Lilac Time festival during the first two weeks of May.

The Park District has determined that the water park will operate at limited capacity in 2021. An online reservation system will be used to help facilitate times. Hours of operation and daily admission rates are forthcoming.

rom long-standing restaurants to trendy pop-ups that offer the latest culinary delights, Lombard offers exciting dining choice adventures. Looking back, the pandemic brought challenges to the food and restaurant industry. Locally, many restaurants reworked their menus, adjusted, and offered new family-style options. The community rallied with great support. Righteous Kitchen, a local family-owned catering company, responded by donating meals to front-line workers. Downtown Lombard is a magnet for locals and visitors alike who seek tasty food and a multitude of delicious choices, such as Shannon’s Deli and Punky’s, popular staples by the train station. O’Neill’s Pub, a popular spot for fun, food, and drink, will reopen in spring with a makeover. The Patio’s awardwinning BBQ ribs are worth the trip. Rosemary and Jeans, which opened prior to the pandemic in a historic building downtown, offers contemporary Italian food. What else is new? Take a tasty trip and visit Groundlevel 105 for Modern American cuisine; Brooks Kitchen & Tap for a contemporary menu and crafted classics; Kyles Corner Grill for fast food favorites; and Simple Greek for fresh pitas, bowls, and more. Lawrence’s Fish & Shrimp, now under new ownership, has been serving delicious shrimp and fish since 1967. How fortunate to be in a community that offers families and friends a wide variety of gastro-delights and culinary treats to eat or drink a local brew and glass of wine. Weber Grill Restaurant is a perennial favorite and their infamous steaks served after the Lombard Chamber’s annual golf outing are legendary! There are good old American seafood, chicken, steak and burger restaurants around Lombard, with others offering international culinary flair, such as Thai Kitchen, El Famous Burrito, Los Comales, and Chai Tea. Don’t forget the kids. Their top picks are pizza and ice cream and Lombard’s foodie scene is filled with many kid-friendly choices, like Gianorio’s Pizza, Billy Bricks, Little Caesar’s, Old Town Pizza, and more, for gooey, tasty choices! Craving something sweet? Ice cream temptations in all flavors are abound from local favorites like Sweet Street and Florence-the Ice Cream to Dairy Queen and Culver’s. How about delicious locally famous pies from Babcock’s Grove House? Dining in Lombard also hit the map when local residents Doug and Kim White converted their van into a personal dining room for two. Since they couldn’t sit inside their favorite restaurants during the pandemic, they found a way to support them by ordering carry-out, parked their van outside the restaurant, and enjoyed their meals to the delight of everyone. This is just the tip of the iceberg when mentioning long-time local establishments, popular chain restaurants and new eateries that make up the special flavor of Lombard dining.
