Hot Chocolate and Love While the winter months felt cold and dreary outside, Villa St. Benedict’s warm and cheerful atmosphere continued inside. A vital component of our warm community is our Life Enrichment team, who keep the residents smiling and active. Residents were visited by the Hot Chocolate Cart with hot chocolate, treats, and homemade Holiday masks sewn by our community and friends. Valentine’s was celebrated with a Gallery of Photos and momentos for residents viewing and sharing. The programs at VSB aren’t the only things to be cheerful about. The long-anticipated renovations in Abbey Lane (VSB’s memory care unit of 14 private rooms) are completed! The
décor is calming; the open dining area helps residents enjoy their meals while socializing. Small seating areas allow for personalized activities and small group gatherings. The casual seating porch provides the “best view” of the campus, looking over our 47 acres of park-like grounds. Spring will bring about outdoor activities, residents enjoying walking paths and overflow of birds from Morton Arboretum. Villa St. Benedict’s history and spirit make it one of a kind, a hidden gem in the western Chicago suburbs. Daily Mass is offered in the Sacred Heart Chapel. Looking Boomers Forward
How exercise can help you live longer There are many reasons to get in shape. Weight loss is a prime motivator, as is reversing a negative health effect, such as high cholesterol or increased diabetes risk. Routine exercise also can improve life expectancy. WebMD says exercise keeps the body and brain healthy. That’s why exercise should be an important component of daily life no matter one’s age. Research published in the journal Immune Aging found that how people age is 75 percent lifestyle and only 25 percent genetics, which underscores the importance of the lifestyle choices people make.
Cardiorespiratory fitness
Many health experts say that cardiorespiratory fitness may be just as valuable a metric to determine overall health as blood pressure and lipid levels. People with a high aerobic capacity can deliver oxygen to tissues and cells efficiently to fuel exercise, according to data published in 2014 in the journal Aging & Disease. In a study involving 11,335 women, researchers compared
V02 max, also known as aerobic capacity, in women with mortality data. Women who were fit from a cardiovascular perspective had a lower death rate from all causes, irrespective of the women’s weight.
Manage stress and mood
Exercise has direct stress-busting benefits that can promote longevity. The Mayo Clinic says physical activity can increase the production of endorphins, which are the body’s feel-good neurotransmitters. In addition, exercise can imitate the effects of stress, helping the body adjust its flight or fight response accordingly, and help them cope with mildly stressful situations. While engaged in exercise, people may forget about their problems as they are focused on the activity at hand.
Improve bone health
Strength training and physical activity can stave off the effects of frailty and osteoporosis, which affects bone strength. A study published in the Journal of Internal Medicine in 2017 found
that hip fractures are associated with diminished quality of life and survival among the elderly. One in three adults aged 50 and over dies within 12 months of suffering a hip fracture, and older adults have a five- to eight-times greater risk of dying within three months following a hip fracture. Building muscle strength, balance and bone density through exercise can reduce falls and frailty, helping to prevent fracture-related health risks.
Addresses sarcopenia
The health and wellness resource Healthline defines sarcopenia as the loss of muscle mass specifically related to aging. Doctors once considered this muscle loss inevitable, and it can affect stamina and lead to weakness. However, new indications suggest that exercise is the main treatment regimen for sarcopenia, particularly resistance training. This is designed to improve muscle strength and help balance hormone levels by turning protein into energy for older adults. These are just some of the ways exercise can help older adults live longer, healthier lives.

Heritage Woods of Batavia Carole Rapp moved here from an independent senior facility in Batavia in November. Her daughter contacted Heritage Woods of Batavia because things were getting more difficult for her mom around her apartment. She had a caregiver visiting her weekly and felt she needed something more. However, with the pandemic going, on she felt she needed to move her to a facility with stricter precautions. She had visited Heritage Woods of Batavia before, and felt it would be the right fit for her mom. Carole ended up moving in on November 16th with a ribbon cutting in front of her apartment. (pictured) Upon moving in, new residents are put on quarantine for 14 days. To help with the transition of moving in during the pandemic, we offer a 14-day experience which includes each new resident receiving some of their favorite things for the first two weeks of quarantine. Carole received a gift bag of goodies which included some necessity items for everyday use, her favorite snacks, a potted mum, and her favorite drink, diet coke. Each day she was visited by someone on staff with a surprise to make her first days here unforgettable. Carole is looking forward to receiving an Echo Show as part of her experience, so she can make video calls with her daughter any time she wants. However, being on the first floor was a great
location for her daughter to visit with her from the outside safely. Window visitations can also be arranged for our residents at this time. Since moving here, Carole says “I love the food being delivered, and the staff is wonderful. Anytime I need help, there is someone available and I never have to worry about cooking or cleaning anymore”. Carole also enjoys our weekly newsletter that our activity department puts out each week. She said it keeps her mind busy and she looks forward to the puzzles and jokes. The newsletter also includes games, good news history, and positive sayings for all to enjoy in their rooms. Even though we have a pandemic going on, our residents can still enjoy activities and can stay active. Our activity department works hard with serving the residents with craft carts, holiday carts and games, the festive Friday cart, often skipping out of their rooms to dance with our cheerful Resident Service Coordinator. Carole also said she likes that we have doctors that come weekly if she has any medical issues. Our nurses are here Monday- Friday from 8-11 pm and on the weekends for our residents, along with 24- hour nursing assistants. This is something that was important to Carole’s family upon moving her in. We are here to assist with
meds and showers, if needed. Heritage Woods of Batavia currently has availability and is offering some incentives to move in. It is a supportive living community that accepts Medicaid. Please contact 630 406 9440 if you would like some more information.
