Annual Westmont Community Awards Dinner WESTMONT RECOGNIZES EXCELLENCE IN THE COMMUNITY

he Westmont Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau (WCCTB) hosted the Annual Westmont Community Awards Dinner to recognize area individuals and businesses. The Awards Dinner was held on April 30, 2018 at the Hilton Chicago/Oak Brook Hills Resort and Conference Center. The Westmont Chamber Community Awards Dinner is an annual tradition in Westmont designed to provide a special opportunity to pause and recognize the many wonderful volunteers, activities and businesses that work to make Westmont a great place to live, work and visit. WCCTB President Kevin Carey noted that “Over one-hundred and seventy Westmont area residents, business owners, and civic leaders attended the Westmont Chamber Community Awards program to demonstrate support for our community. The Westmont Chamber along with the Village of Westmont, Rotary Club of Westmont, Westmont Lions Club, Westmont Special Events Corporation and the Knights of Columbus are collectively proud to recognize the individuals and businesses that help contribute to the growth and success of Westmont, in a manner that keeps Westmont a great place to live, work and visit.”

During the awards program, the following special community recognitions and awards were presented:

Rubino, Courtney Templeton. The Westmont Citizen-of-the-Year award was presented to Steve Golembiewski by Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter.

 The 2017 Dick Busse Businessof-the-Year Award recognizes a Chamber business that has excelled in community service, business promotion, civic responsibility and contributions to the betterment of the Chamber and the Village of Westmont. The nominees for this award were: DJ’s Sports Bar & Grill, K. H. Renovations, Inc., Uncle Bub’s Award Winning BBQ & Catering, Urban Veterinary Associates. The Dick Busse Businessof-the-Year award was presented to DJ’s Sports Bar & Grill (222 E. Chicago Avenue) in recognition of their high level of community interaction and support.

 The 2017 Educator-of-the-Year Award recognizes a local educator for their outstanding efforts in their field and to the betterment of the Village of Westmont. The Educator-of-the-Year award was presented to two educators this year. Lori Dvorak from Holy Trinity Catholic School and Jane Most from Westmont High School.

 The 2017 Roger Westman President’s Award recognizes an individual who has performed outstanding service to the Chamber and the Westmont Community. The Roger Westman President’s award was presented to Al Carson, Dogz ‘N Harmony by Westmont Chamber President Kevin Carey.  2017 Westmont Citizen-of-the-Year Award recognizes individuals that reside in Westmont and that have demonstrated exceptional community involvement and leadership. Mayor Gunter noted “we have five wonderful people nominated for the Westmont Citizen of the Year that have made such a positive impact to the success of Westmont.” The nominees for this award were: Mary Gabryel, Steve Golembiewski, Debra Heady, Lia

 The 2017 Westmont Public Service Award recognizes a member of the municipal organizations who demonstrates exemplary public service to the community. The Westmont Public Service Award was presented to Kevin O’Hare, Training Officer of the Westmont Fire Department, by Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter.  Westmont Lions Club President, Bob Fleck, presented the 2017 Melvin Jones Fellowship Award to Rick Martin.  The Rotary Club of Westmont President, Jeff Mitchell, presented Craig Grember with the Paul Harris Award in recognition of his exceptional level of community service and volunteer work.  Westmont Special Events Corporation (WSEC) President, Sam Alonzo and Village of Westmont Director of Communications Larry McIntyre presented the “Making Memories Award.” The 2017 WSEC “Making Memories Award” recipient is Jennifer Babyar.

WESTMONT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIP Working in support of the growth and success of Westmont Greetings, with a warm welcome from the Westmont Economic Development Partnership (WEDP) to our friendly Village of Westmont. If you were not aware, WEDP is a public – private partnership with the Village of Westmont and the Westmont Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau. The purpose of WEDP to proactively promote the Village of Westmont in ways that that support the retention of our existing business community, recruit new businesses as well as attract and retain residents to the high quality of life offered in Westmont. WEDP services include corporate location support, ready inventory of available commercial and residential properties, site selection tours and general support with business information and location selection services to serving as a guide and key resource on how to open or expand a business in Westmont. Recent commercial activity now open in Westmont is an expanded BMW and Porsche dealerships, seven of our ten car dealerships have/are expanding. Westmont also will have a new commercial center at 63rd and Cass Avenue and a world-class swim complex at Ty Warner Park with construction to begin in the spring. Proposals are in-process for multiple new residential and commercial projects in Downtown Westmont. Our central location with excellent transportation and schools and highly educated workforce makes Westmont a desirable place to lease, build, buy and conduct business. WEDP has several key incentive tools that can be used to recruit and retain; Westmont has an active TIF in both our Downtown B-1 Business District and in our 63rd Street South Westmont Business District. Funds created through these TIF Districts help spur new development and support infrastructure investments and upgrades. In the Downtown Westmont B-1 District, Façade Improvement and Life Safety grants are available to business and commercial property owners to help support growth. Additional project incentives can be used based on project location, type, scope and positive economic impact (jobs, sales tax, property tax, etc.) to the Village. WEDP does ask for your help and support in terms of the identification of any potential new business that you would value in Westmont. Home to the Godfather of Blues The 40-plus piece collection of wardrobe costumes, rare photos, classic poster, album covers, plaques, a Grammy award and memorabilia honors famed ‘Godfather of the Blues:’ Muddy Waters, who spent his last 10 years of life as a Westmont resident. In the early 1070’s, Waters decided to move away from the south side of Chicago. With several young children who he had taken under his wing, he felt that he needed to move into a better environment for his family. His manager found a location in Westmont and Waters fell in love with the community immediately. After Waters’ wife Geneva had passed

away, he met a young lady who he asked to come live with him in Westmont from 1973 until Waters passed away in April of 1983. While the legend of Muddy Waters had been established many years prior to this decade, it is safe to say that his years in Westmont were some of the best years of his life. A strong foundation built for a better future Photo and article by Westmont Historical Society

It was commercial ventures, specifically bricks and stones, which provided the historical foundation for a thriving community. Following the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, brick manufacturers were eager to take advantage of the area’s natural resources to fulfill the huge demand for bricks for the rebuilding of Chicago. The Chicago-Aurora branch of the Chicago-Burlington & Quincy Railroad, completed in 1864, provided the necessary transportation making current day Westmont the perfect location for William L. Gregg to establish his brick-making company, Excelsior Press Brick Manufacturing Company. The company employed 120 people and produced 70,000 bricks per day. Gregg is credited with inventing and patenting the triple pressure brick machine, which is said to have revolutionized the brick industry. Using this method, his bricks could withstand 100,000 pounds of pressure without

cracking or disturbance of any kind. Although Mr. Gregg left the area after 3 years, the area still continued to grow. The rail stop known as Gregg’s Milk Station was a popular flag-stop on the line as cars picked up milk from local farmers. Growth and development revolved around the railroad station, which for many years served as the major transportation route to Chicago. Land developer Arthur McIntosh began buying property in the area in 1920, hoping to found a town where those wanting to build could buy land for as little as $5 down. In 1921, the Village of Westmont was incorporated. Being the highest location west of Chicago along the railroad, its name was a natural fit. Vince Pastor was chosen as the first village board president and held office for two years. Through the decades, Westmont has been able to maintain a wonderful community that is just as attractive to businesses as it is to residents.

Recreational activities are scheduled throughout the year and are listed in the seasonal activities brochure which is delivered to all Westmont residents three times a year. A RESOURCE TO RESIDENTS The Westmont Public Library opened at its current location on January 27, 1993. The 28,000 square foot building sees about 500 visitors a day and provides physical and digital collections, computer labs, free wi-fi, art gallery space, makerspace tools, and more. Meeting rooms accommodate large groups and five study rooms are available to small groups or individuals free of charge. The Library also hosts program for adults and children, including monthly book clubs, story times, and hands-on workshops. Westmont schools small, but mighty

Westmont is quickly becoming known for its vibrant community of small, high-achieving schools. The town is part of Community Unit School District 201, one of the top districts in the state. The district comprises South School Early Childhood Center (133 S. Grant St.), J.T. Manning Elementary School (200 N. Linden Ave.), C.E. Miller Elementary School (125 W. Traube Ave.), Westmont Junior High School (944 N. Oakwood Dr.), and Westmont High School (909 N. Oakwood Dr.). Westmont High School principal Jack Baldermann was recently named one of the

three finalists for the 2018 National Principal of the Year Award. Class sizes at the school are significantly smaller than neighboring schools, allowing for more one-on-one interaction between students and teachers.
