It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Each year, I look forward to the excitement and comfort of the holidays. After the beautiful fall foliage is swept away by approaching winter winds, I fondly treasure the extra time spent with family and friends and the togetherness the last months of the year bring. Amongst beloved recipes and meal preparation, and the anticipation of a loved one’s reaction to a carefully selected gift, there is always an abundance of events and activities to enjoy or choose from in the region.

STAFF Options abound from holiday performances, various musical talent, comedy acts, celebrity events and family shows – you’ll be entertained with whatever you choose (P. 28). However you decide to enjoy and celebrate this season, I hope it is filled with fond memories and time well spent with those you love. From all of us at Neighborhood Tourist, happy holidays!

In this issue of Neighborhood Tourist, we’ve featured a myriad of winter activities to help complete your holiday season. Bundle up and enjoy a light show, parade or festival near (or a short drive away) with our extensive lineup of possibilities (P. 9). Zoo lights are often a favorite family tradition; be sure to add that to your list if you haven’t already been (P. 12)! As you engage in holiday shopping, parties and family events, schedule time to enjoy the many theater offerings our region is able to present.

Light the Way to Holiday Fun

Winter & Holidays

By Diane Krieger Spivak • Photos courtesy of Brookfield Zoo and Lincoln Park Zoo

I

t’s that time of year, again, when brightly colored lights set the mood everywhere to get you in the holiday spirit. What better place to experience the season than a zoo? Iconic Brookfield Zoo, in Brookfield, has been doing it up right for more than 40 years. Holiday Magic at Brookfiled Zoo is the longest light festival in the area, according to Leah Rippe, the zoo’s vice president of marketing & communication. “Come for the animals and stay for the lights,” says Rippe — over 2 million of them over 24 nights throughout the zoo’s

TOURIST 12 NEIGHBORHOOD WINTER 2023

235 acres. Guests can experience the zoo and learn about wildlife while making new memories, she says. This year, live entertainment is returning after a lengthy hiatus due to the COVID pandemic. Enjoy roaming carolers, pictures with Santa, the North Pole Juggling Elves and Those Funny Little People. “Kids absolutely love them,” says Rippe. Each night an ice carver will demonstrate the art of ice carving by replicating a different animal. Visitors can walk through the archway on the east mall watching moving lights orchestrated to music.

Holiday Magic at Brookfield Zoo launches each year with a community tree-trimming event. This year, 800 trees decorated by various community groups will grace the zoo, and 80 more by various businesses will surround the center fountain. Holiday Magic runs from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. each night, so stay for dinner at one of three restaurants on-site. There’ll also be goodies for sale like apple cider, hot chocolate, funnel cakes and more. Weather permitting, visitors can enjoy virtual reality experiences and rides on the zoo’s

carousel. Holiday Magic runs from Nov. 24 through Dec. 31 on specific dates. For dates, gate entry and ticket options and more visit: https://czs.org/HolidayMagic For holiday lights in the Windy City, visit Lincoln Park Zoo’s ZooLights. The holiday classic has been bringing seasonal family fun for 29 years. Visitors can enjoy the lights and music of the season while they check out the animal exhibits that are open late during the event. “We hope to inspire a new nostalgia for generations of families and friends to come, as they watch Lincoln Park Zoo transform NEIGHBORHOOD TOURIST

into a shimmering winter wonderland in the heart of Chicago!” says Director of Marketing & Events Gretchen Kirchmer. This year’s ZooLights features updated new and modern LED light displays with interactive elements across the zoo, including a never-before-seen garden-themed light show on the zoo’s South Lawn. The Pepper Family Wildlife Center will transform into the North Pole, hosting visits with Santa. Ride the Ferris wheel for an awesome bird’s eye view, listen to strolling carolers, watch live ice carvers and walk the expansive light tunnel on the Main Mall. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. There’ll be a holiday-themed pop-up cocktail bar and a fire pit for roasting s’mores. ZooLights runs through Jan.7 and is closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. For more information and to purchase tickets visit www.lpzoo.org/pressroom/zoolights-2.

kating beneath a sky of falling snow, it isn’t just in the movies. Throughout Northern Illinois there are outdoor rinks to enjoy the brisk winter air as you glide across fresh ice. Skate under the stars or bring along sticks and a puck to enjoy a game of pond hockey. We’ve listed some favorite spots to check out this winter well worth a drive to enjoy and make special memories. There are a few important reminders for outdoor skating. Outdoor rinks are subjected to the weather, so always check the website for updates on rink conditions before heading out. Some of the man-made rinks require several days of below freezing temperatures to ensure the ice is ready for use. Remember to never skate on a non-designated pond, which can be extremely dangerous. The forest preserves and park ponds are unsupervised, so pay close attention to any flags posted about ice conditions. And parents may want to bring along an extra pair of clothes, after a few slips and slides, children tend to end up with wet pants after a few laps around the rink.

OUTDOOR ICE RINKS

There are fees to skate, see website for prices as well as fees for skate rentals. For some rinks, advance ticket purchases are available and provide a discount. MAGGIE DALEY PARK SKATING RIBBON Downtown Chicago maggiedaleypark.com/things-to-do-see/skating-ribbon millenniumparkfoundation.org/programs/winter-iceskating Who needs a rink when you can skate on a ribbon of ice with the incredible Chicago skyline as a backdrop. Scheduled to open Nov. 17 through March 10. Open seven days a week. Rent skates or bring your own. Purchase tickets in advance online for a discount. Lockers are available to store items while skating. With plenty of great restaurants in the vicinity it’s easy to make a day of a visit here. Millennium Park is adjacent to the skating ribbon and it has the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink, open November through March. CHICAGO WOLVES ICE RINK AT PARKWAY BANK PARK Rosemont rosemont.com/thepark In the center of this entertainment district discover a gem of an ice rink. The rink is scheduled to open Nov. 18 and remain available through Jan. 28, weather permitting. Bring your own skates or rent them onsite. Be sure to check the website as the rink closes for private events and hockey tournaments. If skating works up an appetite, there are several restaurant choices in the park including the decadent Sugar Factory with its dazzling candies and over-the-top milkshakes.

ICELAND SKATE Niles www.niles-parks.org/iceland-skate millenniumparkfoundation.org/programs/winter-iceskating When the air turns brisk, the Niles Park District prepares its outdoor rink for hockey and public skating options through the winter. Skate under the covered rink. Skate rental available onsite, check website for times and fees.

PARK DISTRICTS & FOREST PRESERVE LOCATIONS

For most of these locations there are small or no fees to skate; be sure to check the website in advance for any costs and weather conditions. Remember even if the temps are freezing on the day you want to skate, it often takes several days of below freezing temps to ensure the ice is ready for skating. Bring along your own skates, most of these locations do not have skate rentals. ECHO BLUFF PARK ICE RINK Spring Valley/DePue echobluff.org A favorite outdoor rink in the Illinois Valley, the professional rink hosts hockey clubs and figure skaters throughout the winter months. The rink is scheduled to open Nov. 24. Before stepping on the ice, explore some of the great small towns nearby for a delicious lunch or grab a coffee to warm up after your time on the ice. Their specialty cocktail menu features delightful titles like the Pink Drink, a blend of rum, strawberry puree, pineapple juice, frozen strawberries and coconut cream, or the Hugo, a combination of soda water, elderflower liqueur, fresh mint and prosecco. Try out something refreshing and unique with their Guava Ranch Water cocktail including tequila, lime, guava juice and soda water.

BOOKED FOR KIDS

n “STARFISH” by Lisa Fipps Since jumping in the pool wearing a whale swimsuit at her fifth birthday party, Ellie has gained the mean nickname “Splash.” It seems like all anyone sees is her weight. With the help of her dad, a new friend next door and the therapist, Ellie learns how to be a starfish: spread out wide and proudly take up space. n “THE UNFORGETTABLE LOGAN FOSTER” by Shawn Peters Logan Foster has been in foster care for years and has given up hope of finding a family. His awkward manner, photographic memory and habit of reciting random facts are some of the reasons he has had trouble fitting in. But then he meets Margie and Gil – whom he discovers are superheroes! They try to shield Logan from the truth but in the end, they need his help to protect the world.

Arts & Entertainment

n “THE SECRET GARDEN ON 81ST STREET” by Ivy Noelle Weir In this graphic novel retelling of the classic by Frances Hodgson Burnett, Mary Lennox lives in Silicon Valley. After her parents are killed in a car accident, Mary is sent to live with an uncle in New York City. Her uncle has a tech-free house, so Mary looks for new ways to occupy her time. Soon, she finds the key to a secret garden on the rooftop of their building and discovers a cousin she never knew living on the second floor. n “THE GRACE OF WILD THINGS” by Heather Fawcett This is a beautiful fantasy retelling of “Anne of Green Gables.” Grace has an affinity for magic and a love of poetry. Desperate for a home, Grace runs away to the woods where a witch lives. Hoping at last to have found someone to understand and care for her, Grace instead ends up in the witch’s oven. A savvy Grace strikes a deal with the witch: If she learns all 100 ½ spells in the witch’s grimoire, the witch must teach her magic, but if Grace fails, the witch can take away Grace’s magic — possibly her life — for good. n “SQUISHED” by Megan Wagner Lloyd This graphic novel tells the story of 11-year-old Avery, who feels “squished” living with her parents and six siblings. She loves her younger siblings, but they take up a lot of her time and attention, leaving her wanting a space of her own. As she tries to balance friends, family and finishing her art entry in the summer fair, her parents mention a possible move to the other side of the country. How will Avery get through it all when she feels surrounded on all sides?

10 TITLES FOR YOUR FAMILY’S READING LIST

In the winter, there’s nothing like curling up with a warm blanket and a good book. Check out these reading recommendations – five for children, five for adults – from the librarians at Geneva Public Library.

FOR ADULTS

n “FIVE DAYS GONE” by Laura Cumming One daughter’s tenacious search for her mother’s history becomes a blend of memoir and history. It begins in fall 1929, when a 3-year-old girl was kidnapped from a beach in Lincolnshire, England. When she was found five days later in a nearby village, she was happy and healthy. But why had the kidnappers taken her? And why had she so willingly gone with them? Half a century later, partly remembered memories sparked by old photos begin to unravel this long-buried family story. n “FOUR TREASURES OF THE SKY” by Jenny Tinghui Zhan Daiyu lives in a small village in China and is named after a tragic, helpless figure from local folklore. Daiyu hates her name, feeling that it has determined her fate. Tragedy strikes when Daiyu loses her parents and must fend for herself. One day, a predator sells her as a slave bound for America. Ripped from her home and everything she knows, Daiyu refuses to give in to tragedy and forges her own destiny in the New World. n “BECAUSE INTERNET: UNDERSTANDING THE NEW RULES OF LANGUAGE” by Gretchen McCulloch The internet’s impact on our world “irl” (in real life) is undeniable. Linguist Gretchen McCulloch explores one area where this is especially obvious: language. Throughout the book, McCulloch explores ways humans communicate, such as abbreviations and the subtle differences between smiling emojis. Users of the internet will laugh as McCulloch analyzes the slang and style that has become second nature. n “THE ALL-AMERICAN” by Joe Milan Jr. Bucky is an average 17-year-old American, but when he gets into some trouble and is taken in by police, he finds out the citizenship paperwork his parents filled out never went through. It doesn’t matter that Bucky has lived in the U.S. since he was 2 years old; in the eyes of the law, he is Korean. Bucky finds himself deported back “home” to South Korea, where he experiences a dizzying introduction to Korean society. n “ANXIOUS PEOPLE” by Fredrik Backman This is a story about idiots. But to stop there would do a disservice to the characters, each of whom has a compelling story. They find themselves tied together by an unusual circumstance. It all begins with a crime that never happened: a failed bank robbery where the “almost” perpetrator accidentally finds themselves taking on unintended hostages. Each has their own reason for staying and to see the situation through.
