Cars drive by dealerships on East Main Street in St. Charles. State Sen. Jim Oberweis has submitted a proposal to allow car dealers to be able to be open for business on Sundays.
By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com Mary Ann Barca said she remembers when car dealerships were open Sundays. Barca, who works as the executive manager at Al Piemonte dealerships, including St. Charles Chrysler Dodge Jeep, said Sundays were busy days. But she said dealerships are better off being closed Sundays, as they are in Illinois, thanks to a law that went into effect in 1983. She said there was tremendous turnover and burnout in the business, and that the industry wouldn’t benefit if dealerships were able to be open Sundays. She added that’s why the law was passed in the first place. “It’s just not a good idea,” she said. “It really isn’t. It would be so hard for everybody involved.” State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, has pushed to allow dealerships to open Sundays. He said making such a law is “just wrong policy, and
I will fight that type of government abuse whenever I see it.” He said that since 32 states allow car dealerships to be open on Sunday, there should be no problem with having them open in Illinois. He said the law is in place because “the dealers got together and used the government to prevent anyone from being open on Sunday.” “These are self-interests,” Oberweis said. “They believe they will save money and save effort from not being open, and that’s not the way it works in a free market.” According to www.cyberdriveillinois.com, violating the law is a misdemeanor, and it could cost offenders $1,500. Surrounding states that don’t allow dealerships to open on Sundays include Wisconsin, Missouri and Indiana. Those in the business said there are good reasons not to be open. They point to long hours for some who already work more than 10 hours a day, some for six days a week.
They say that since banks aren’t open Sundays, arranging financing could be difficult. “Buying a car back then wasn’t as complicated as it is now,” Barca said. “You maybe needed three or four documents to sign. … Now, it’s just like buying a house.” Ryan Easter, general manager at Bob Jass Chevrolet in Elburn, said if there were complications with loans or banks that could not be resolved, customers could get upset. He said “we would be doing an injustice” in that situation, adding many customers arrive with the thought that they are going to go home in a new car. Some say if the law were not there, there would be dealerships that choose to open on Sundays. That, they said, would force others to open, for fear of losing business. Dave Sloan, president of the Chicago Automobile Trade Association, said it’s a “minor inconvenience” that dealerships aren’t open on Sunday. Easter said Sunday “is a time for fam-
ily, a time of worship, a time [employees] can do things in the community.” Sloan said customers enjoy shopping at dealerships when there are no salesmen allowed, so they can look around with less pressure. Oberweis rejects the arguments as “pure self-interest silliness.” He said if people want to take a day off, then do so like any other business, “one person takes off these two days, and the other person takes off these two days … the same thing they do when they go on vacation.” He said it is “a total indictment of the industry, if people would rather shop when there are no salesmen around.” Oberweis pointed to examples of retail businesses – such as Chick-fil-A and Hobby Lobby – that can thrive despite not being open on Sundays. And yet, he said, the leaders of the companies have not gone to legislators and said, “Would you please prevent McDonald’s or Burger King from be-
ing open on Sunday?” He said if banks being closed would hamper business, “then they won’t sell the car to that person on Sunday.” Sloan said he never has heard from customers who wanted dealerships open Sunday. Oberweis said he has heard that. And, as far as complaints, Oberweis said he hears from angry people in the industry, and “I would say that the dealers are much more organized in their comments.” Barca said it’s a reality that some dealers would seize the opportunity to open, and that others would follow. But she doesn’t think it’s right. She said there would have to be finance staffers, management, porters and office staff. “It’s not just salespeople who would be here,” she said. “There would be no question, we would be open,” she said, but she added that she had another suggestion. “How about Congress stay open on Sundays?”

Excitement on tap during Discovery Days Extirpated! Extinct! Extreme! It’s no exaggeration to say that the month of February is going to be an extravaganza of exceptional experiences that will showcase examples of Mother Nature’s excesses. Excited? Then mark your calendars for every Saturday in February when the third annual Discovery Days event takes place at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center in St. Charles. And – if you haven’t figured it out already – this year’s theme is the “Ex Files,” an extensive look at animals that used to call Illinois home. “People may have heard terms like ‘extinct’ and ‘extirpated’ before but may not know what they actually mean,” said Pam Otto, manager of nature programs and interpretive services, in a news release. “We want to focus on animals that people may not realize have ever been associated with Illinois.” Creatures like mastodons and stag-mooses, for example. During the Ice Age, these giant beasts once roamed the area. In fact, remains of a stagmoose were uncovered in nearby Campton Hills. Such animals were referred to as megafauna and were once as common in the area as cows and coyotes are today, the release states. Nor is extinction some-
thing that only took place in the past, to creatures like dinosaurs and passenger pigeons that are no longer around. “There are a lot of species that are going extinct today, and while extinction is a natural process, it can also be accelerated by things that humans do,” Otto said. Visitors to the “Extinct is Forever” program on Saturday, Feb. 15, will be able to view a sample of mastodon fur and other displays that show types of animals that will never be seen again. Many species are often extirpated – eliminated – from an area, which can be a prelude to extinction. In Illinois, creatures like wolves, bears and cougars once roamed freely. Today, their sightings are rare occurrences, the release states.

St. Charles audit shows a surplus ST. CHARLES REPUBLICAN stcharlesrepublican@shaw media.com ST. CHARLES – An audit of St. Charles’ last fiscal year shows the city continued its recent trend of posting a surplus in the general fund. The audit by Sikich LLC. showed St. Charles ended fiscal 2013 with $39.5 million in revenues and $38 million in expenditures, resulting in a surplus of about $1.46 million in the general fund, according to a city news release. The release noted that apart from a small deficit in fiscal 2011 at the height of the Great Recession, St. Charles has posted a surplus in the general fund since 2008. According to the city, it accomplished this by cutting nearly 12 percent of expenses from fiscal 2008 to 2010 and by

generating revenue. Examples include the 2 percent alcohol tax and adjusted fees for building permits, special events, towing, vehicle impounding and administrative charges related to arrest bookings. Meanwhile, the city reported, its property tax levy remained steady while program and service levels were maintained. “The expenditure reductions we established in fiscal years 2009 and 2010 during the economic downturn continue to benefit St. Charles citizens,” Finance Director Chris Minick said in a written statement. “[Fiscal year] 2013 expenditures remain $4.7 million lower than [fiscal year] 2008 levels, and the city’s tax levy has been held steady for five consecutive years.” Contact Minick at 630-7627002 for information.

When ordering your prescription eyeglasses, give careful consideration to having them treated with an anti-reflective (AR) coating. By eliminating reflections from the surfaces of both the fronts and backs of each eyeglass lens, AR coatings improve vision and also make it possible for people to see the wearer’s eyes and facial expressions more clearly. This benefit is sure to be appreciated by those who have ever had their pictures taken with their glasses on. AR coatings are particularly beneficial for those wearing high-index lenses, which tend to reflect more light than regular plastic lenses. In any case, AR coatings promote sharper vision with less glare at night and more comfortable vision during prolonged sessions at the computer screen. P.S. High-index lenses are lighter and thinner than regular lenses due to their greater light-focusing power.

For anyone who wants a chance to be in the same room as a live wolf, come to the Nature Center on Saturday, Feb. 8, when the experts from Big Run Wolf Ranch will bring one of these embattled animals along to help explain what life is like today for wolves, coyotes and other threatened wildlife species. They also will advise on what to do if that big dog you see in the backyard really does turn out to be a wolf after all. Back by popular demand is the Free Spirit Huskies with four demonstrations on the half hour in the savannah area. And if extremes are your thing, then the first and final programs will explore the excesses experienced by both humans and animals. Survival strategies take front and center stage at Discovery Days’ kickoff program on Saturday, Feb. 1. Learn how to build a fire, make a shelter and find food and water – and see how animals go about doing the same during winter’s cold climate. And speaking of cold-blooded creatures – really, really large cold-blooded creatures will give Discovery Days a big send-off Saturday, Feb. 22, when Bubba the 8-foot alligator returns with handler Jim Nesci and his other reptiles of unusual size, including a giant tortoise, lizards and snakes. Six to join arts Hall of Fame By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Being colorblind hasn’t prevented Aurora artist George Shipperley from creating award-winning work. “It’s really a plus,” Shipperley said. “I see colors differently from other artists. I may not know exactly what colors I am using, but I know when they work.” Shipperley, who loves painting landscapes and has the distinction of being the first awarde d s i g n a t u r e George member of the Shipperly Oil Pastel Society, received another honor Jan. 23 when he was named one of six inductees into the Fox Valley Arts Hall of Fame during a presentation at the Batavia Public Library. The awards will be presented at an induction banquet celebration Thursday, May 1, at Villa Olivia, 1401 W. Lake St., Bartlett. The Hall of Fame honors and showcases the work and performances of artists associated with the Fox Valley who have achieved distinction nationally and internationally. They have been presented every other year since 2002. Shipperley said he was “humbled” when he learned he was to be inducted into the hall of fame. “It is something I will remember the rest of my life,” he said. “You want to be appreciated as an artist. An artist wants to be recognized for their art.” Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra conductor and music director Randal Swiggum was another induct- Randal ee. Under his Swiggum direction, the EYSO has performed with Midori and Yo-Yo Ma and
appeared at the Ravinia Festival. “It’s a huge honor to be inducted,” Swiggum said. “It’s a privilege working with kids. It’s a chance to introduce young people to life-changing music. I think it makes their life richer and better.” Other inductees include Aurora native Jim Gibson, who has had a long career as a musician and as host of a vari- Jim ety of pageants Gibson and television programs; D. Lee DuSell, who was born in Aurora and whose work has been exhibited at galleries across t h e c o u n t r y D. HOOKED BY ITS
BEAUTY Geneva resident shares Alaskan experience By SARAH VETTER editorial@kcchronicle.com

here are many among us who struggle daily to find a sense of purpose and a clear direction in life. We may wonder what road we should travel down next. But not Jim Robertson of Geneva. He’s found his special place in life, and now his mission is to share it with others. It was more than 20 years ago when a friend Jim Robertson invited Robertson, who then owned a storage-solutions company, to join a group traveling to Alaska. He may have been a city boy from the South Side of Chicago, but he always enjoyed the outdoors and being in nature. “I got off the plane in Anchorage, turned around and saw the Chugach Mountains,” Robertson said. “I was immediately taken by this place, hooked by its beauty and power. It’s just magical.” He’s been sharing that magic for the last five years as a professional Alaskan adventure guide and a certified life coach with his company, More to Your Life. Robertson leads his own eight- or nine-day tours in and around Valdez, Alaska, with small groups looking to truly experience the place. The trips, offered from June 15 to Sept. 15, can be modified according to what people most want to see and do, but Robertson’s typical tour usually

Book your tour Geneva resident Jim Robertson, a professional Alaskan adventure guide, currently is booking tours for this summer. Check out Robertson’s website, www.moretoyourlife.com, or call 630841-0925 for more information and photography from his previous adventure trips. includes hiking on glaciers, whitewater rafting, kayaking trips, camping, looking for bears, and reeling in some massive fish. The trips are not for people who
want to do a drive-by or see Alaska while cruising along on a ship – it’s for those who want to reach out and touch it, Robertson said. “I watch these older folks come in on the buses,” said Robertson. “It’s like they’re finally getting to Alaska. But by the time they get here, they can’t do anything.” That’s why his company motto is – If not now, when? Jim Fowler of St. Charles booked a trip with sons Dustin and Simon, daughter Randi, and his brother Mike Fowler, along with his daughter, Alexis. “King salmon fishing was the bomb!” Jim Fowler wrote in an email about the trip. “Many of the fish were over 30 pounds, and Randi got the monster catch of 42 pounds.” Jim Fowler also enjoyed the other-worldly experience of kayaking into Prince William Sound among the floating icebergs. Alexis Fowler loved sharing stories and dinners and desserts around the
fire while camping in the Alaskan wilderness. “We could not have asked for better guides, chefs and accommodations on our trip, which absolutely was one of the best adventures and vacations that any of us had ever been on,” she said. Above all, Robertson wants to get people outdoors to share his appreciation and profound respect for the transformative power of nature. “Nature is perfect,” he said. “It has no agenda, no jealousy; it has no drive to be rich or use people. It’s indifferent to your presence and will do whatever it’s going to do. I think, personally, anybody who goes up to Alaska comes back different in some way.” For the Fowlers, the Alaska adventure was one they’ll never forget – not only because of what they saw and did. “The most important highlight of our trip was being there as a family, taking in this magnificent experience and breathtaking views together,” Jim Fowler said.

Chez Moi’s Croque Madame ($9) consists of a grilled ham and Gruyere cheese sandwich with Bechamel sauce topped with a fried egg. Sandwiches come with a salad or fresh fruit.
Escape to Parisian café at Chez Moi GENEVA – While the frigid cold swirled around outside, I was warming up with a hot vanilla latte, seated at a dainty table for two in a Parisian-style cafe – the perfect escape from a whirlwind of a winter and just what I needed to see me through the rest of the work day. The escape – Chez Moi. Chez Moi, which loosely translates to “my place” or “at home” in French, is a cutesy enclave in downtown Geneva that recently celebrated its two-year anniversary. Its owner, operator, designer and executive chef Beth Simone Cull studied at the Cordon Bleu Culinary School. According to the Chez Moi website, Cull still travels back to France when she can, but – instead – brought a “slice of Paris a bit closer to home.” Chez Moi is primarily a breakfast and lunch joint. It can cater to the early morning on-the-go crowd and dine-in clientele. Menu items include breakfast sandwiches, ham-and-cheese croissants, crepes, French toast, galettes, quiches, sandwiches and salads. For the caffeine cravings, Chez Moi satisfies with an assortment of specialty drinks, espressos and cappuccinos, using coffee from PapaNicholas Coffee in Batavia.
The beautifully-plated Fresh Deviled Eggs at Chez Moi in Geneva ($3) come with three halves and a few pieces of fruit. My dining companion said she was happy to peruse a menu that offers items not easily found in the Fox Valley. Walking through the heavy, steel grey curtains leading into the dining room, my dining companion and I were pleasantly surprised by the eatery’s inviting and “cute” decor. The exposed brick, ornate chandeliers and antique copper ceiling tile gave the room a vintage-chic feel. Seemingly, the front part of the restaurant’s interior is made to look like an outdoor café with light
from outside streaming in; outdoor café-style chairs; chalkboards reading the day’s specials; and a dessert display case for carry-out traffic. The elongated dining room devoid of windows is seemingly the “indoor” portion of the restaurant. It’s slightly more decorous and equipped with a bar (serving beer and wine) at the back of the room. We sat at the cafe portion of the restaurant because at 12:30 p.m. last Thursday the place was packed.

Although, the serious tone doesn’t last long, as the very next number is “We’ve Got to Clean Out The Freeze,” referencing the need to remove the four dead nuns housed in the freezer. The show ends on a high (no pun intended) with “Holier Than Thou,” by Sister Mary Hubert (Aguilar), who uses an incantation of a Baptist minister in the deep South to give the song soul. By the show’s end, you can’t help but love all of the Sisters in all of their dysfunctional grace.

• MYSTERY Continued from page 15 We started with the Deviled Eggs ($3), three halves that came with a couple pieces of fruit. The deviled eggs tasted fresh and the filling gave the egg a salty, textured creaminess. My dining companion ordered the Croque Madame ($9), a grilled ham and Gruyere cheese sandwich with Bechamel sauce and topped with a fried egg. Sandwiches come with a salad or fresh fruit. She also ordered the Diabolo Menthe, a lemon-lime soda with shot of mint syrup. My companion thoroughly enjoyed the Croque Madame, and said her “sandwich was If you go flavorful and filling,” and that “the egg on What: Chez Moi top was a great way to tie the meat, bread and Where: 415 W. State cheese of the sandwich St., Geneva together.” Hours: 7:30 a.m. to 3 I ordered the p.m. Monday through Galette ($9-$10) – a Saturday (closed traditional French Sunday) savory crêpe made Phone: 331-248-0654 with buckwheat (gluOnline: chezmoigeneten-free) and topped with a dollop of crème va.com fraîche. The filling I chose was the sausage, egg, apples, arugula, smoked Mozzarella and balsamic glaze. You can substitute the buckwheat crepe for flour, which I recommend doing as the flavor of the buckwheat isn’t necessarily as appealing as flour to the American palate. The organic, earthy taste of the buckwheat crepe overpowered much of its filling. We ended the meal with the Chocolate Bread Pudding ($4.50). Warm, sweet and savory, the bread pudding had a chocolate-sauce drizzle that added a hint of bitterness to the sugar component. Other notable menu items include the Breakfast Soup ($6), a chicken-broth based soup with bacon bits, crispy croutons and a poached egg; Crepes ($7) of the sweeter and more traditional variety, served with Nutella and/or banana or fresh berries and chantilly or cinnamon, sugar and toasted almonds; an Assorted Cheese Platter ($25) to sample with wine; Roasted Squash Salad ($10); and Quiche ($10) with salmon, arugula, Gruyère cheese and balsamic glaze. Chez Moi also hosts an array of special events throughout the year, including wine tastings and public cooking classes. For example, the French eatery will host a cupcake-decorating and chocolate-truffle making class at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13. For $25 a person, attendees can enjoy a glass of wine and assorted small plates while decorating. (Reservations are required.) My escape to Paris via Chez Moi proved a success and an experience that I undoubtedly will be duplicating. Until next time, bon appétit!

St. Charles North 1st Annual Pennies 4 Pounds Lift-A-Thon
jschwab@shawmedia.com Rob Pomazak’s extensive strength and conditioning background was one of his chief selling points when St. Charles North hired him last year as the school’s new football coach. Now, Pomazak plans to put his stamp on the school’s weightroom with a creative new fundraiser. On Saturday, Feb. 1, Pomazak is helping oversee the school’s 1st Annual Pennies 4 Pounds Lift-A-Thon, in which dozens of North student-athletes will record lifts in the bench press, squat and power clean, with per-pound pledges helping raise money for what Pomazak envisions as substantial upgrades to North’s weightroom. “When I got here in February, we came in and kind of took a look at the facility itself, and it’s a great space. There’s plenty of room. We’ve got these high ceilings – but really looking at one of the major needs we had is probably getting more racks,” Pomazak said. “When people see racks, they think of straight power lifting but in today’s day and age of strength and conditioning, racks can be used as self-contained areas for athletes to train. You can do a lot of station work at them.” Pomazak emphasized the fundraiser is designed to benefit all North students and athletes, not only the football program. Creating a more versatile and inclusive weightroom is a central part of Pomazak’s goal in the coming years. “A lot of our training was done in the hallways,” said Pomazak, who was strength and conditioning coordinator at Elk Grove and also holds those duties at North. “Kind of what we’re looking to do is make this a one-stop shop where you feel like you can have your whole program in here, and you can get everything that you need to do, whether your focus is
What: Participants in the fundraiser will attempt a max lift in the bench press, squat and power clean for a three-lift total. The Lift-A-Thon is a major fundraiser for North’s weightroom facility. Proceeds raised will be used to purchase new equipment for all North students and athletes to use. When: 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb.1 ; admission is free Where: St. Charles North weightroom Of note: All money pledged to student-athletes is due by Friday, Feb. 28. For information, visit northstarfootball.org or email Rob Pomazak at robert.pomazak@ d303.org. ABOVE: St. Charles North varsity football player Kevin Bagrowski does a clean-and-press lift in the school’s weight room as Jordan Bergren (left) gives encouragement. North will hold its first “Lift-A-Thon” on Saturday, Feb. 1, at St. Charles North. The event is a fundraiser to revamp the weight room. strength or endurance or if it’s speed and agility and quickness. We kind of want to make this room meet every single student-athlete’s needs, and I feel like right now maybe it only meets some of them.” At least 60 North student-athletes are expected to participate in the Lift-A-Thon, representing several different sports. North football junior running back Nick Edlund likes the creative approach the school is taking with the fundraiser.
“It’s definitely a lot more interesting, a lot more kind of motivating than just going doorto-door and just selling raffle tickets or something like that,” Edlund said. “You pretty much reel in how much money you lift that day. It’s an interesting twist to it and I think it motivates a lot more kids to try and challenge themselves to go and raise money for a good, winning program.” North’s boosters organiza-
tion is helping orchestrate the event. Boosters president Tom Mullally said an event that benefits all of North’s programs is a natural extension of the school recently consolidating to a central boosters system rather than each sport having its own group. “Being that it’s our inaugural, we’re certainly doing everything we can to shed as much light onto it as possible because I think if it’s successful this year, it gives us a great
foundation to build on it year over year,” Mullally said. Batavia revamped its weight-training facility a few years ago, and the Bulldogs’ football program – coincidentally or not – has enjoyed a historically successful run since, including the school’s first football state championship this past season. Referring to Batavia, Pomazak cited a “direct correlation between their physical strength and their emotional investment in their team.” North has missed the playoffs four straight seasons, going 5-4 in Pomazak’s debut in 2013. “I think that type of team-building is something that you just can’t replicate,” Pomazak said. “I really think if you get that in place and you get the equipment in place and kids start to buy into that atmosphere of this is the place where you do win championships, I think you’re only going to get more kids out for your program. I think you’re going to have stronger kids who are coming out and I think more committed kids.”

Now is the ideal time to create an impressive entertaining space in your home — one that you will be proud to share and truly enjoy throughout the year, whatever the occasion. New gardeners should discover ‘The Old Farmer’s Almanac’ By Maureen Gilmer McClatchy-Tribune Information Services
There’s a hole punched in the corner of “The Old Farmer’s Almanac for 2014.” It’s a nostalgic remnant of the homestead where it hung on the outhouse wall for reading material and toilet paper. This is the very same annual that guided early American farmers, and it’s still just as important today, but for a whole new audience. Now backyard food growers can learn how to link sun, moon and stars, seasons and cycles and folklore into tending the sustainable home garden. “The Old Farmer’s Almanac” is useful because it reminds you of planting dates and other important times in the agricultural year. It’s is a primer for new gardeners to discover the older, less expensive ways to get things done. Moreover, this annual details how astronomical happenings, such as moon phases, governed the tasks of the gardener-farmer’s world. Why, you ask, is this important? That farmer used the old time methods of using phases of the moon to govern his work, and that helps gardeners, too. It dictates the kind of tasks he performs in the waxing moon or a waning one, when the moon is full or there is no moon at all. The Almanac utilizes very old symbols for celestial goings on from day length to the sun’s position with signs of the Zodiac and many things other similar publications lack. The symbols were essential for illiterate farmers who could not read text but recognized the signs and knew what they mean. The farmer’s monthly cycle is broken into four moon phases. The new moon is called “the dark of the moon.” Soon after, the first sliver of moon appears, called the “fingernail” moon growing nightly until the first quarter is complete. This signals it is on the increase or “waxing” incrementally larger each night. This continues through the end of the first quarter into the second, which ends in the full moon. Then the moon “wanes” or grows smaller each night until the third quarter is completed. In the fourth, you come around to the new moon again. An old farmer’s rule is to plant crops that fruit above the ground while the moon is waxing. Then under a full moon all crops are planted. It was believed that the strength of the moon is greatest when full and would therefore bring more growth energy to seed germination. As the moon begins to wane planting continues through the third quarter, but only those plants which produce below ground such as turnip or potato. The fourth quarter of the moon is a time of destruction and planting is forbidden. This
is when the farmer cuts his fence posts and firewood. He ploughed the fields and pulled weeds. Harvest also occurred in the dark of the moon. Among other important information is sunrise, sunset and tides for every day of the year. Woven into these factoids are useful tips, handy examples and folklore from early farming practices that still ring true today. This year’s feature stories include an excellent primer on crop rotation in the home garden. While buying my new issue,
