By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Lisa Diersen, one of the founders of a horse festival that debuted in St. Charles last year, said there was no question about the venue organizers hoped to use: the Kane County Fairgrounds. “It was always the goal to be in the fairgrounds because they have the size that allows us to grow, and we hope to grow into a pretty large festival,” Diersen said. The Festival of the Horse and Drum nabbed an August weekend at the fairgrounds, a feat which could be described as lucky considering the number of events the fairground hosts throughout the year. With so many regular customers, including the Kane County Flea Market, Kane County Fair Board President Larry Breon said it can be dif•

ficult for a new organization to book facilities at the fairgrounds, 525 S. Randall Road, St. Charles. “People have a tough time finding a time for the usability,” he said. “Just about almost every weekend is booked and sometimes multiply booked.” Breon, whose history with the fairgrounds started with his involvement in 4-H and spans 40-plus years, said those who haven’t visited the property recently might remember it as it used to be – “dirty, dusty and not real modern.” But upgrades about five years ago brought the Prairie Events Center – an air-conditioned exhibit hall with a full kitchen and space suitable for weddings – to the property, as well as amenities for motor homes, including an independent bathroom and shower area and hookups for electricity and sewer disposal, Breon said.

“That kind of brought us up to date on facilities,” he said. “People wanted a nice facility.” Wanda Robinson of the Kane County Flea Market said the Prairie Events Center provides more space for dealers who would rather be inside than in a barn. “That building alone houses over 100 dealers in there,” she said. Amy Egolf, executive director of the Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau, said it is an asset to have three expo centers – the fairgrounds, the DuPage Expo Center and the Mega Center at Pheasant Run Resort. Nationally, she said, tourism numbers are up, but the increase is being driven by the transient market. The group market, which includes meetings and events for associations and corporate, social, military, education,

religious and fraternal organizations, continues to lag. “Having three expo centers is a boon to greater St. Charles, as well as the state as it allows us to be competitive with other destinations suited to serving the group market,” Egolf said. As for the Festival of the Horse and Drum, Diersen said the fairgrounds has facilities to meet the needs of its various activities. The festival is set for mid-August, but those wanting to check out the fairgrounds sooner can attend the 146th annual Kane County Fair now through Sunday, July 20. Breon said the five-day event will give people a chance to experience the modern fairgrounds if they haven’t already. “A lot of people haven’t experienced it for a number of years,” he said. “I think they’d have a good time.”

Sudden loss of vision that typically occurs in one eye without any experience of pain may be due to retinal vascular occlusion. This interruption of blood flow to or from the retina may be due to a clot or blockage in the main vein or artery or any of their various branches. A blockage in the retinal vein or artery can cause blood or other fluids to build up and impede the retina’s ability to filter light properly, prompting sudden vision loss to occur. The severity of the vision loss can vary in accordance with where the blockage occurs. Thus, it is very important that the ophthalmologist perform a comprehensive eye examination at the first sign of sudden vision loss. P.S. Because retinal vascular occlusion can be traced to vascular problems, the best prevention is to make lifestyle and dietary changes to protect your blood vessels, including exercising, losing weight, controlling diabetes, and giving up smoking.

Canoes can provide a slower, more serene way of getting to know the river’s natural areas as boaters glide along at nearly duck-eye level. And for anyone thinking about purchasing a canoe for personal use, it’s a great way to test the waters, so to speak. “It’s a nice way to explore how canoes work and get to know the craft,” Jourden-Messerich said. It’s one thing to walk by the Fox River or drive above it. It’s a whole other thing to actually be out on the water. What better way to experience the beauty, tranquility and wonder of this diverse natural habitat than to rent a canoe or pedal boat from St. Charles Park District staff at River View Miniature Golf? With eight pedal boats and two canoes available for rental every day, there’s more than enough fun to go around. Boaters can rent either type of craft for an hour for $15 or make reservations for multiple hours, with a $5 discount offered on Rent-a-Boat Wednesdays. “It’s one of the most popular activities,” Meg Jourden-Messerich, assistant superintendent of recreation, said. “People visit the park and River View Miniature Golf just to rent one of the boats.” And why not? GENEVA – Kane County employees licensed for concealed carry now are prohibited from carrying firearms in their personal vehicle while on county business, even if the vehicle is parked. The Kane County Board approved the policy earlier this month as part of its consent agenda. Under the Illinois Firearm Concealed Carry Act, concealed firearms are prohibited in government buildings, but parking areas are considered “safe harbors,” meaning those licensed for concealed carry may keep guns in a locked case within a vehicle, according to county documents. When considering the new policy in April, a County Board committee expressed concerns about balancing liability issues and employees’

Under state law, concealed carry is prohibited in government buildings, such as the Kane County Judicial Center, but a new policy passed by the Kane County Board this week takes the law one step further by prohibiting many employees from carrying firearms in their personal vehicles. constitutional rights. Assistant State’s Attorney Joseph Lulves, who drafted the employee concealed-carry policy, has told board members the county is within its rights to restrict employees’ ability to carry firearms in their vehicles. He has compared the restrictions to other ways em-

ployers are able to regulate employee behavior, such as prohibiting certain clothing. The policy the County Board passed July 8 reflects a “risk management position,” Lulves has said. The policy does not apply to county employees authorized to carry a concealed firearm by any other state statute.

IN THE WRITE PLACE Documentary to feature St. Charles Writers Group By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com atavia resident Stacy Chambers started reading her short story, “A Very Small Thing,” slowly but deliberately as the other members of the St. Charles Writers Group perked up their ears. “It was a very small bird. The small beak was gentle and long,” Chambers said as she read her short story to the group, trying not to notice as fellow member Randy Martin aimed a video camera at her during a recent session of the St. Charles Writers Group. Martin is making a documentary that takes a glimpse inside the St. Charles Writers Group and other writers groups in the area. Even though the moment represented the first time Chambers had read any of her work in public, she was trying not to be nervous. “Hopefully, I didn’t stumble too much,” Chambers said. For the last two years, Martin, of DeKalb, and his wife, Danute Dockuviene, have been filming the activities of the group, which include live readings and the members critiquing each other’s work. Martin believes his being a writer gives him good insight into the subject matter. “It gives me a very good perspective, because I am a member of the group and get the same criticisms that I am watching other people get and that is what I am looking for, to see how they feel,” Martin

I’ve encouraged him to go ahead with the film.” Holinger said the group has lived up to the vision he had for it. “I think, generally, writing groups have almost taken the place of self-help groups,” he Photos by Sean King – For Shaw Media said. “People come to writing Writers Group member Randy Martin operates a video camera during a June 28 meeting of the St. Charles Writers groups, I think, not only just Group at the St. Charles Public Library in St. Charles. to become better writers, but also to live in a community of about 50 hours of interviews “The focus is going to be said. “So, I think it does offer writers and to be with a comwith individual writers. on the St. Charles Writers me an unusual perspective.” munity of writers.” “There are interesting perGroup,” he said. n HOURS: 11 a.m. to 9:30

Upon the soup’s arrival, the owner provided a bit of novelty to the meal by slowly sprinkling in a healthy amount of crunchy white rice, which sizzled loudly on impact with the broth. The gargantuan soup bowl provided a healthy portion and could have been lunch on its own. Scallops, crab, jumbo shrimp, mussels and vegetables came in a homemade broth. Some of the other soups, made with wheat noodles, include the BBQ Pork and Noodle – slow-roasted pork, vegetables, sweet corn and boiled egg – Chicken Noodle and Beef Noodle, to name a few. The delicate Crab Rangoons came served with a delectable strawberry glaze that the owner said was made from scratch using fresh strawberries. My dining companion opted for the Sesame Chicken lunch special ($6.95), which comes with steamed rice and a choice of fried egg roll or crab rangoon. “This is the best sesame chicken, I’ve ever had,” he uttered between bites. I had similar sentiments about the Honey Walnut Shrimp ($13.95), which the owner mentioned his mother had ordered the last 11 times she visited the restaurant. Sweet like the Sesame Chicken, the jumbo shrimp had a hint of crunchiness underneath a creamy layer of coconut sauce. Walnuts soaked in honey dotted the dish, providing an extra flavor component and texture.

Though not on the menu, Liu Brothers dessert, which changes often, sounded outstanding, and with the made-from-scratch, fresh-forward food coming out of that kitchen, I’m sure any dessert tastes as good as they sound. In St. Charles’ competitive dining scene, Liu Brothers Asian Bistro provides a bit of familiarity with Chinese cooking, but does it in a way that is fresh and new. With ubiquity, when something is done well, it tends to stand tall among the many.

ST. CHARLES – Chinese restaurants and take-out joints are a staple in the American dining scene, and – often – with popularity comes ubiquity. With so many options, it’s difficult to hone in on the places that are doing it better than everyone else. Liu Brothers Asian Bistro off of Route 64 in St. Charles is doing it slightly different, and it’s good – oh, so good. Liu Brothers serves modern Chinese fare in a casual setting. Having only recently opened in February, Liu Brothers’ friendly atmosphere is heightened by the dining room’s clean lines and minimalistic interior, which includes white linen-dressed tables topped with roses. And the prices are very reasonable. Entrées range in price from $7.95 to $14.95. (The more expensive dishes generally have seafood.) In addition to popular Chinese food menu items, such as Sesame Chicken or Beef and Broccoli, Liu Brothers has introduced a variety of seafood dishes and noodle soups to its menu. The bistro also is a B.Y.O.B. establishment that doesn’t charge a service fee to pop a beer bottle cap or uncork wine. My dining companion and I visited the bistro on a recent Friday for lunch and were greeted by an owner, who doubled as the host and server. Throughout our experience at Liu Brothers, the owner chatted with customers, shared stories about the restaurant and made sure to inform diners about each dish and the freshness of ingredients used. He handled everyone with care and showed exceptionally high standards for what came out of the kitchen and how the food was presented. Seated in a cozy corner near a large window, we ordered the Fried Pan Pot Stickers ($4.95) that came with six pork and vegetable dumplings, the Crab Rangoons ($4.95 for six pieces) and the Seafood and Sizzling Rice Soup ($6.95) to start.

Peace Corps volunteer to show photos at Arcedium Coffeehouse PLANIT KANE planitkanenews@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Arcedium Coffeehouse in St. Charles will host an exhibit of 33 photographs taken by St. Charles architect Mike Dixon during his three years as a United States Peace Corps volunteer in Ukraine. The exhibit will run through Sunday, Aug. 10. Dixon took more than 15,000 photographs during his time in the Peace Corps until an abrupt evacuation from the war-torn country in late February. The photographs

offer a look into the lives of the Ukrainian people, their folk architecture and their festivals. Traveling extensively throughout the country from Kyiv to Crimea, Dixon was able to capture the unique culture and hospitality of Ukraine. He also will tell his story through a presentation at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. 6th Ave., St Charles. The program is free and open to the public. The Arcedium Coffeehouse is located at 60 Indiana St. in St. Charles.

Baseball organist looks back on Disco Demolition By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The July 12 Disco Demolition Night anniversary naturally triggered “some colorful memories” from former longtime White Sox organist Nancy Faust. She happily greeted a few more upon arriving at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on the morning of July 13. Faust’s familiar round of “Sunday Funday” accompaniment helped the Cougars, Snappers and their fans get through playing two, just like the Sox used to. “This is like Comiskey Park when I first started,” Faust said. “Every Sunday game was a doubleheader. But they went nine innings. These are a little faster.” Per Midwest League rules, the Cougars and Snappers played a pair of seven-inning games. The Cougars earned a sweep, winning 3-1 and 6-5 in a

combined 3 hours, 59 minutes of baseball. While Cougars righthanders Jen-Ho Tseng and Paul Blackburn eased through Beloit’s lineup, Faust embraced the challenge of keeping her musical whims and puns in tune for longer than usual. Playing alongside a June 22 doubleheader between Kane County and Cedar Rapids provided a nice tuneup. “I pay stricter attention at these games than I was paying for the last few years at the [White Sox] ballpark,” Faust said. “Because there I was connected to a headset and there were so many activities, and it was more a matter of, ‘Play, Nancy,’ and I just would play. But now, I’m on my own to pay good attention. I can’t let my mind wander here.” Daydreaming hardly stood a chance July 12, 1979, as what initially was conceived as an innocent promotion between games of a doubleheader be-

tween the host White Sox and Detroit Tigers escalated into bedlam. Sox executive Mike Veeck, son of then-owner Bill, a noted baseball visionary, hatched the idea. Some 60,000 fans crammed into Comiskey to explode disco records, but things shifted when many deviated from the itinerary and rushed the field, going wild. Game 2 eventually was canceled. “When it started, I wasn’t aware that it was going to be out of hand, so I just went along with it,” Faust said. “And I’m playing ‘DUH, DUH, DUH…’ when everybody’s yelling, ‘Disco sucks!’ and it was a lot of fun. Next thing you know, you’ve got Bill Veeck pleading with people. ‘Sit down. Take your seats.’” Faust discussed the incident with considerably more calm. “As time goes by, it’s more of a historic, cultural event

than it is an embarrassment,” Faust said. Not to mention a punchline whose staying power grows every July 12. “At least [Faust] didn’t have to be embarrassed,” Mike Veeck said, followed by a laugh. “But I am tired of the old man getting lambasted for something he didn’t do. It was my doing. He wouldn’t know what disco was if it came up and bit him.” Bill Veeck died in January 1986, but chances are he’d have trouble escaping the teen-driven pop of Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus if he were alive today. To that end, Mike Veeck, the longtime president of the Class-A Charleston (S.C.) RiverDogs, a New York Yankees affiliate, plans an organized destruction of those artists’ discs Saturday, July 19. “The idea is to have fun with it,” Veeck said, “but I don’t much care if it goes

around the country or not.” Faust and her husband, Joe, laughed at the notion at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark over the weekend. It was Veeck who had an indirect hand in Faust’s involvement with the Cougars, as both were special guests on the club’s “Night of 100 Promotions” in August 2011. “That’s why I’m still here, in fact. It went over so nicely and everybody was just so great that it just worked out,” Faust said. This marks Faust’s third year of playing the organ before and during Sunday home games. She said she and club officials have yet to discuss a return for 2015, but her sunny persona and ease before a crowd makes that seem likely. “All the ushers, they’re always waving,” Faust said. ‘Good to see you back.’ It just makes you want to come here. Makes you want to be part of the activities.”
