2 From the LCCOA

Executive Director By Susan Lawler I attended my first Prom, it was everything I was promised and more. Lee County Council on Aging’s 2018 Prom was a success. We were so pleased at the turnout and the support from the community and the surrounding counties; which included Ogle and Whiteside counties. Ninety-eight people of all ages filled the Post House Ballroom with laughter and gayety. If you missed this year’s Prom, mark your calendar for 2019. It is a night you don’t want to miss. May was a great month for weddings and parties, every weekend was booked in our Post House Ballroom. If you have an event coming up please check the Post House Ballroom’s calendar for availability. Every event held at PHB is always a memorable time. A special thank you goes out to Lee Center Township for its

generous donation and support; also to the Dixon Evening Lion’s Organization and to PLN Mutual Insurance Company for donations to Lee County Council on Aging’s roof fund. If you haven’t donated, we are always accepting donations. Remember, we still need funds for our leaking wall. Once a week the Golden K’s (Kiwanis) meet at LCCOA and invite a speaker. This past month LCCOA had the pleasure of having Esther Frey, born April 29, 1918. Esther taught at our very own Dixon High School from 1969 to 1990. Many of you might remember Esther as your teacher and friend. Esther graduated from La Verne University in Southern Cali-

fornia in 1939 and started her teaching career in the same year. In 1950, she earned her master’s degree in religious education from Bethany Theological Seminary in Chicago (which has now moved to Indiana). At Bethany Theological Seminary, Esther met the love of her life Orlin Frey. Orlin and Esther were married in 1950. Esther should write a book on all the places she has seen and all the accomplishments in her life. When Esther spoke of Pearl Harbor and President Roosevelt words of war, it clearly brought a profound emotion. Esther’s list of stories were endless, but they were not just stories she actually was reliving her past and 100 years of our country’s past. At the end, Esther had a special gift for one of our Kiwanis members. Esther taught Terry Johnson’s son Carl Amos Johnson at Dixon High School in 1987. One of her assignments to Carl was to write a poem. Esther presented to Terry, Carl’s poem that she has kept all these years. With permission from Esther and Terry Johnson, she would like to share Carl’s poem.

Mother and Father I am today educed of God and Man. The latter in these lines will be addressed. To first, I owe for giving me the best of his creation found upon his land. From me perfection you did not demand. But love for you has made this task my quest. Too little do I see how much I’m blessed, To have you both to hear and understand. My time to leave and be without your care Comes soon with fear of what my God intends. Where e’re I go a part of you I’ll take. This portion you have made, no work did spare. Fret not. Rest in good peace my two best friends. My hold is stronger than the world can break. LCCOA would like to thank Esther Frey for sharing her life and memories with us and may she visit us soon. Until next time, “Lee County Council on Aging: A place where you belong, a place to call home.” – Susan

that, we needed more space. We just completed a lot expansion and leveling for our transit fleet. We have also filled the lot’s large pot holes. Wow! We have made many capital improvements this year! On our agenda for the beginning of the next fiscal year is to complete a remodel to the women’s

restroom, paint the center’s doors and railings, as well as power wash the building. We want the center to look and feel nice for our patrons. We hope you have noticed our improvements and efforts to make the center the best it can be! – Tori

From the WCSC Executive Director By Tori McDaniel June! How is it already June? Wow, I cannot believe I have almost completed a full year as the Director of the WCSC. The team has completed so many accomplishments this year and for that, I am thankful. We’ve made many changes and adjustments over the past year and some of them haven’t been so easy. No matter what, the team has come together to ensure we are able to have the best center we can for you! I would like to sincerely thank our team for their hard work and dedication over the past year. Some of our accomplishments have been internal but we have had

many external accomplishments. We started the year with putting a much-needed roof and new gutters on the center. We started to feel the chill of the impending winter and found we needed two new furnaces and some plumbing work. It then became dark in the parking lot! We needed to repair two of our parking lot lights. As spring came, we decided it was time to update our facility sign. It is amazing and makes such a difference to the front of our facility! Our transit fleet continues to grow and expand and due to

POST HOUSE BALLROOM

BY CATHY REGLIN Lee County Council on Aging

• June 2018

We are into the wedding season! We have only three Saturdays available until November and they are June 9 and 23, and Aug. 25. Along with those Saturdays, check out our calendar and see what other dates are available – there are a couple of Sundays for graduation parties. We are so happy to know that people appreciate the ambience and history of our building and find it a beautiful place to have their special events. It is definitely a jewel in northwestern Illinois. I love it when people come in, look around and say “Wow!” In addition, I just found out recently that we may be able to finally verify where the chandeliers came from. We’ve heard opinions of The Pump Room in Chicago and The Waldorf-Astoria in Chicago and New York. More on that exciting news later! If you need a beautiful place to have an event, look us up on Facebook. Go to posthouseballroom.com for information about the building, prices and to see our event calendar. Visit posthouseballroom.shutterfly. com for pictures of events held here. Then, you can email me at posthouseballroom@gmail.com or call me at 815-288-0892, and we’ll talk. All proceeds from the Ballroom go to Lee County Council on Aging for senior services in Lee County.

MEDICARE Q&A

How does Medicare cover skilled therapy? Dear Marci, I have Original Medicare. My doctor told me I will need to have a large amount of outpatient physical and occupational therapy. My friend who used to get physical therapy said that Medicare only covers a certain amount. Is this true? What does Medicare cover? – Nadine (Denver) Dear Nadine, Medicare Part B covers outpatient therapy, including physical therapy (PT), speech-language pathology (SLP), and occupational therapy (OT). If you meet Medicare’s eligibility requirements, Medicare covers therapy on a temporary basis to improve or restore your ability to function, or on an ongoing basis to prevent you from getting worse. Medicare should cover your outpatient therapy regardless of whether your condition is temporary or chronic. You are

Have trouble hearing on the cell phone? Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation (ITAC) has added a program to help those with cellular service that are having trouble hearing on the phone. The program still provides free amplified telephones and captioning

eligible for Medicare coverage of therapy services if: • You need skilled therapy services, and the services are considered safe and effective treatment for you. • Medicare defines skilled care as care that must be performed by a skilled professional, or under their supervision. • Your doctor or therapist creates a plan of care before you start receiving services. • Your doctor or therapist regularly reviews the plan of care and makes changes as needed. Original Medicare covers outpatient therapy at 80 percent of the Medicare-approved amount. When you receive services from a participating provider, you are responsible for a 20 percent coinsurance after you meet your Part B deductible ($183 in 2018). Previously, there were limits, also known as the therapy cap, on how much outpatient therapy Origi-

nal Medicare covered annually. However, in 2018, the therapy cap was removed. If your total therapy costs reach a certain amount, Medicare requires your provider to confirm that you therapy is medically necessary. In 2018, Original Medicare covers up to: • $2,010 for PT and SPL before requiring your provider to indicate that your care is medically necessary. • $2,010 for OT before requiring your provider to indicate that your care is medically necessary. Remember, Medicare pays for up to 80 percent of the Medicare-approved amount. This means Original Medicare covers up to $1,608 (80 percent of $2,010) before your provider is required to confirm that your outpatient therapy services are medically necessary. If Medicare denies coverage because it finds that your care is not medically necessary, you can appeal.

Keep in mind that outpatient therapy includes therapy received at: • Therapists’ or doctors’ offices • Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Facilities (CORFs) • Skilled nursing facilities (SNFs), where you are there as an outpatient or are otherwise ineligible for a Medicare-covered stay. • Home through therapists connected with home health agencies, when you are ineligible for Medicare’s home health benefit. If you are receiving therapy through the Medicare SNF benefit or the Medicare home health benefit, your therapy will be covered differently. – Marci

telephones to Illinois residents that are hard of hearing. Applicants must be certified as hard of hearing by a doctor, nurse practitioner, or audiologist; live in Illinois; and have a service that remits to the program. Lee County Council on Aging (LCCOA) and Whiteside County Senior Center (WCSC) are selection

centers for ITAC. Walk-ins are welcomed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday at the WCSC. Potential applicants can call the WCSC 815-622-9230, ext. 194, or LCCOA 815-288-9236 in advanced to set up an appointment to see about qualifying for this wonderful program. Cellphones must be Bluetooth capable. Applicants who wish to

apply for this program should bring in the cellphone. Please bring a phone bill with all the pages for landline service or cellular service (prepaid cell users that don’t receive a phone bill must bring the cellphone) and proof of address (driver’s license, state ID, or a bill with the applicant’s name and address on it).

Marci’s Medicare Answers is a service of the Medicare Rights Center, the nation’s largest independent source of information and assistance for people with Medicare.

v a e h I E v s e n r had! o i t a c It’s One of the Best Va Immediately following my discharge from CGH for a total hip replacement, I came to Regency Garden Unit for extended skilled care. A patient in my condition is nearly 100% dependent on others for assistance in all areas of life. When I handed over my care to your staff I did so with the belief that they would take care of me and that they cared about me as a person. The entire staff followed through in every way possible with respect to my beliefs, that they would take care of me and would do so in a manner that demonstrated they cared about me as a person. You have much to be grateful for in the staff you have. I extend my deepest gratitude to all staff at Regency Care for the part they had in my healing.

Outreach at LCCOA LIHEAP – Summer cooling It’s June and we are looking forward to the coming months of summer. Though with summer, that means turning on the air conditioning and many people dread this time of year and the rise in costs on those bills. I’ve already had several calls in regards to the summer cooling LIHEAP, and all I can tell you is to keep an eye on the news as well as a listen to the radio as this program is offered through Tri County Opportunities Council (TCOC)

and we often don’t know when it is coming until last minute either. I want to point out that as in years past, we may not even be able to complete those applications here at the center. If the program does open up you may be required you to go directly to TCOC in Rock Falls as it is their program, we are merely a local intake site to serve as a convenience for those 60 and older. Our ability to be that conduit between client and TCOC depends on how long the program opens up. In years past, when the govern-

ment has granted LIHEAP funding for summer cooling, it has generally fallen in the month of July, so this is a great time to be on high alert for it if you have not yet heard anything.

New Medicare cards are coming Yes, you read that right, new Medicare cards will be coming in the near future and you will want to be ready! With new cards coming it sets up a whole new scam

going around, don’t get caught in the crossfire! Your new card will not have your or anyone else’s social security number tied to it anymore, it will be a random mix of numbers and letters unique to you. No official government agency will ever call to ensure you have received your new card, they will not ask you to verify any portion of that new number either! Do not be fooled by these expert scammers, do not give out any portion of your new card information to anyone over the phone.
