By Cody Cutter Sauk Valley Med aroundia
very sport has its one big crown jewel. For golfers in and the Sauk Valley, that Super Bowl-like event is the Lincoln Highway Tournament. This year’s events mark a milestone for the nation’s longest running amateur team golf tournament — its 100th tournaments — and this year they’ll take place during back-to-back weekends in July. The men’s tournament is scheduled for July 16 and 17 at PrairieView Golf Club in Byron, with the women on tap for July 9 and 10 at Deer Valley Golf Club in Deer Grove. Teams from around 8 to 10 golf courses in northern Illinois participate annually; some are longtime members while others have only been in it for a few years. Participation in the tournament gives golfers and golf courses a place in what has become a storied history of competition and bragging rights among one another. Some of those who have taken a swing at it have gone on to achieve more mainstream success in later years, while a select few managed to make a name for themselves before winning their first Lincoln Highway. 24
LINCOLN cont’d to page 25 GOLFING • 2022
LINCOLN cont’d from page 24 About 2,000 men and women have tried their hand at etching their names not only in the tournament’s prestigious history, but also on the trophies they hope to bring home. There’s quite a story to tell of the tournament’s history, and it all starts with members of six golf courses who sought to expand interest in the game throughout the region. The tournament is named after the historic highway that runs through the area, itself named after Abraham Lincoln. The “original six” clubs were Clinton Country Club in Clinton, Iowa, Dixon Country Club, Edgewood Golf Club in Polo, Kishwaukee Country Club in DeKalb, Morrison Country Club, and Rock River Country Club in Rock Falls. The first meeting to lay out its structure took place Nov. 28, 1922, at the Nachusa House in Dixon. Scoring is different than the national mainstream professional tournaments. Instead of the widely known stroke play concept, the tournament uses a best-againstbogey format to help erase some of the moments where certain holes may take their toll on golfers — in other words, the scoring isn’t as bad if it takes an egregious number of strokes to finish. Most participating golfers join their Lincoln Highway team through a qualifier event on their course; other courses either select participants or have a sign-up sheet at their clubhouse. The men’s event has six golfers on a squad, and the women have eight; for women’s team scoring, the best six scores are used to determine a champion. The event is unique in that it honors the top golfers in six flights, with one member of each team assigned to a flight. The legwork on keeping the tournament going usually falls on senior members from the participating clubs during an annual meeting. New clubs are invited, and if they win the approval of rest of the courses at the meeting, they get to host the event the year following their debut. Dixon Country Club (later to be known as Timber Creek) hosted the first mens and womens events in 1923. Kishwaukee swept the top individual honors with DeForest Hunt and Hazel Oakland becoming the first champions. The Kishwaukee men and Dixon women were the first team champions. Kishwaukee golfers dominated the first few years, with 1927 being the first year that golfers not from there won titles: F. L. Markel of Edgewood and Elizabeth Curtis of Clinton. Curtis was a back-to-back Iowa Womens Amateur champion in 1926-27. Milo and Hazel Oakland are the only husband-and-wife duo to win the event so far. They both won in 1925; Milo also won in 1924 and 1941, and Hazel also won in 1926. The Kishwaukee couple were early Lincoln Highway legends, and there would be a lot more in the years to come. To win the Lincoln Highway is considered one of the top feats in regional golf, and winning it more than once adds to golfers’ bragging rights. Several have won it twice, and 16 have won it three times or more.

LINCOLN cont’d from page 25 Then there’s Kishwaukee’s Ruth (Fender) Heal, who’s become without a doubt the greatest Lincoln Highway golfer of all time, finishing on top 21 times in the last 50 years, and leading her club to even more team titles during that time. Her first win came in 1972, but she already had plenty of golf success before that. The Northern Illinois University Hall of Fame athlete won several 18-hole tournaments at Kishwaukee after college, and she also won Women’s International Amateur titles in 1972 and 1973. Her Lincoln Highway successes also helped her win the Illinois State Senior Women’s Championship in 1999. Heal has continued to participate in the event into her 70s, having last won in 2014. Betty (Putnam) Divan comes closest to Heal with nine championships. The first came when she was just 17 years old, in 1936. Divan’s home course was Oregon, which was designed in 1920 by her father, George Putnam. She represented Oregon during her first win, and others that followed, in 1937-38, 1940-41, 1946-48, 1951, 1958 and 1960. Rounding out the trio of those with a handful of wins is Ember Schuldt, whose eight wins came in a row, from 2006-13, for Rock River and Emerald Hill. Schuldt’s first win proved that age is no limitation in a field of experienced golfers — she was just 13 when she made history at Timber Creek. At 15, she led Rock River to the tournament title, one of only 3 years between 1983 and 2009 that Kishwaukee didn’t win it all. Her eight consecutive wins are one more than Heal’s longest personal streak of seven from 1986-92. She also was the Illinois Junior Golf Association Junior Girls’ champion in 2008. No male has won more than five titles, and Jim Lamb set the benchmark with his quintet of wins playing for Sunset in Mt. Morris and Oregon in 1949, 1951 and 195456. Helen Volckmann also has five titles, playing for Morrison and Clinton in wins in 1966-67, 1969-70 and 1975. Gene Hungate is the only other woman to have four or more titles, winning for Rock River in 1953-54, 1957 and 1963. Five men have collected four championships. Kishwaukee’s Arne Hunta was the first to win four (1928-29, 1932, 1934); followed by Clinton’s Milton “Mickey” Beal (1937-39, 1946); Dixon’s Ken Detweiler (1940, 1943, 1945, 1947); Morrison’s Rollie Heaton (1959, 1962-63, 1965); and Mitchell Homb, who won his first as a high school junior in 2009 for Shady Oaks, and followed with three in a row for Timber Creek from 2011-13. Both Heaton and Holm have additional local golf claims to fame. Heaton was the first winner of the Rock River Classic, another prominent local tournament, in 1965. Homb, despite not winning the Lincoln Highway in 2010, was a state champion for Dixon High School that year. Kishwaukee’s Chuck Kittleson and Morrison’s Dave Hilty join Beal and Lamb as the only men to win three titles in a row. Kittleson, who, like Heal, also is a NIU Hall of Famer, won between 1973-75, and also owns a title in the 1987 Illinois Senior Open. Hilty’s successes came at an early age; he was just 18 when he first won in 1981 — and in the 1983 win, not only did he shoot a hole-in-one on Oregon’s No. 9, he led Morrison to the team win to become the final charter member to win a men’s championship after a 60-year drought. 28

LINCOLN cont’d from page 28 Along with Hazel Oakland, two other women have three titles to their credit: Mrs. George Hutchins of Clinton from 1931-33, and Kishwaukee’s Ethel Fisk in 1930, 1949 and 1952. Kishwaukee’s total successes are more plentiful than the others when combining accolades among men and women: The course has 78 total team titles — including 47 for the women — and 62 total individual titles. Sometimes a host course will sweep both the team and individual championships; it’s happened 13 times for the women and nine times for the men. Kishwaukee has five sweeps on its course in both events. Clinton is next with five total sweeps on its course; 1939 and 1946 for the men, and 1933, 1955 and 1975 for the women. Other home sweeps include the very first with Edgewood’s men in 1927, with Dixon’s men following in 1936 and 1958 and Clinton’s men in 1939 and 1946; and on five more occasions in women’s play (Rochelle, 1935; Oregon, 1937; Rock River, 1954; Morrison, 1967; and Sunset, 2005). On the professional scope, there is both the standard PGA Tour and the PGA Tour Champions, which is meant for competition among golfers 55 or older. The older men who have made the Lincoln Highway rounds for many years began to have a tournament of their own in 2021. For this event, each team counted its six best-against-bogey totals from the two rounds, which took place first at Fairways in Rochelle and then at Timber Creek. Two points were awarded for a birdie, one point for a par and zero points for a bogey; a double bogey or worse was a one-point deduction. Sunset’s Brian Weidman, who won the main event in 2003, became the first winner of the senior version with a +36, holding off Shady Oaks’ Dave Kemp in a back-nine duel. The seniors will be back May 21 and 22, with Deer Valley in Deer Grove hosting the first round, followed by Emerald Hill for the second round. Longtime competitors have plenty of stories to tell about the region’s most prominent golf tournament. Some of the stories have taken place at courses that, unfortunately, are no longer around. Past participants Clinton, Edgewood, Lake View in Sterling, Morrison, Oregon and Plum Hollow in Dixon have since closed, but other courses have joined the circuit to keep the historic tournament going: Deer Valley, Indian Oaks in Shabbona, and most recently, Lake Carroll Golf Course and Mendota Golf Club. Whether the players are in their 70s or fresh out of middle school, the Lincoln Highway Tournament is a mix of many different cultures, lifestyles and personalities, each with their own goal in mind, whether it’s taking home a trophy, earning bragging rights, or just sharpening their game. Those who have played in it can lay claim to being part of a prestigious tournament with a hundred years of history behind it, and as long as players keep teeing up, another hundred years in front of it. n
