2 From the LCCOA

Executive Director By Susan Lawler

Here we are again my friends; it is February and 2020 has so much in store for LCCOA friends. Isolation is a growing concern. Lee County Council on Aging and all of the agency’s staff are working very hard with the State to combat Senior Isolation. One of the major programs that LCCOA has started is bringing Senior Transportation back to the Center. Marisa is waiting to take your call and assist you in getting you to your destination. Just a little data since Senior transportation has come back to the Center, we have provided over 1300 rides; so call Marisa at 815-288-9236. Besides Transportation LCCOA has started a Pen Pal program, please call us at 815-288-9236 we would love to have your help in reaching out to our home bound Seniors. A cheery note or card can make a world

The evening will start off with great food, live music, door prizes and much more. If you need a ride call Marisa, she will get you to the event and back home. Transportation is free that night, so come on out and enjoy yourself.

Thank you and thank you of difference to someone living alone. Isolation is a growing concern and you can count on LCCOA to be there; we are just a phone call away. If you know of someone that is feeling isolated, please add them to our list; they will not know who provided their name; confidentiality is our middle name.

2020 Census Our Outreach staff and volunteers will be working hard to train you on the Census application. If you need help don’t hesitate to reach out to us. LCCOA will have a station set-up to assist you with your Census.

Chili Supper – Red Hot Karaoke DJ Service The Chili Supper is right around the corner. Mark your calendars for Wednesday March 11, 2020.

It is time to send LCCOA’s thank you! First, Borg Warner’s Safety Committee provided us with a check for $1,000 to help with our furnace. Thank you, Borg Warner! The wonderful employees at Sterling Federal collected $249 to help us with the cost of our furnace. Preston-Schilling donated chairs for our living room. Our crafters just love the chairs; wish there were more hint, hint!!! Diane Pauser donates every week to our furnace fund. She told me on Friday, as I was thanking her, she thanked me for making LCCOA a pleasure to visit. LCCOA is so grateful to all our clients for their support and caring. We still have a few more to thank. Serenity Hospice and Home of Oregon made crosses for our Seniors to help them get through the holidays. The holidays for some Seniors is not the most joyous time of year and for those

Seniors they need all the support we can give them. LCCOA would like to thank The Meadows of Franklin Grove and Regency Care of Sterling for their support for our Bingo Friday’s. Nina Mardauss, one of our very own Board members, wanted to be sure our staff had something special for the holidays; and last but not least our Crafters. They won first prize in the Christmas tree contest. Those lovely ladies donated back their money to help with the furnace. Bless their hearts. Thank you to the second and third prize winners, who received wonderful gift baskets. Second prize went to the dominoes players and third prize went to Cathy Reglin and family. LCCOA would like to thank all the Christmas Tree entries; their trees truly decorated our Center. This year each entry received a prize. So don’t forget next year and to all the other donors that want to remain anonymous from the bottom of our hearts we here at LCCOA thank you. Until next time, LCCOA a place where you belong, a place to call home. – Susan

When this time of year rolls around here at the Emporium Thrift Center, we know it’s time for celebration. On Feb. 1, 2006, the doors were opened, so that means we have completed 13 years of serving the public and raising money for the Whiteside County Senior Center. We sincerely wish to thank everyone who brings us donations and everyone who shops at The Emporium. You are a great bunch of people who care about the seniors in your community! On Saturday, Feb. 8, we would like to invite everyone to an open house at The Emporium from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Stop in, have a treat and sign up for door prizes. We cannot forget the volunteers who work at the store. A special thanks to all of them; some of them have been here since day one.

I must highlight some merchandise that you might need this time of year. Keep warm with coats, scarves, sweaters and sweatshirts. Here’s an unusual item: swimsuits for all those taking advantage of the local indoor pools or taking a vacation. Right now we have blenders, irons, telephones, and small appliances if yours needs replacing. During these winter days, check out our craft supplies, puzzles or books or games. So many things to see! Hope to see you all at the open house for The Emporium Thrift Center, 114 S. Third St., Sterling. We’re open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. 5 days a week (closed Wednesday and Sunday). The phone number is 815-535-0368. We take donations any time we are open; tell us you are at the curb and we will help you get them inside. Thanks for reading.

Am I the only one that takes a trip down memory lane while taking ornaments off of the Christmas tree? Our tree is not just a Christmas tree; it is a family tree adorned with an eclectic sample of my children’s school artwork, photos and gifts. For many years, I would purchase an ornament that made me think of them, thinking someday, I would hand them down. I never gave it thought that these ornaments would represent so much of our life. Maybe these ornaments mean much more to me than they ever will to my children. Oh, I am positive that they will have some favorites. When I join my adult siblings every year to help put my mother’s Christmas tree up, we have fun going down memory lane and exchanging fun banter about who will inherit certain ones. I can only hope my children will have the same fun decorating my tree someday. That is what Christmas and News Year’s is all about: Reflecting over time gone by and a new beginning to create more memories. Speaking of creating new memories, I will be the LCCOA host for a trip to Mackinac Island June 8-12, 2020. Please join me on this Diamond Tour sponsored trip. I have always wanted to go to Mackinac Island, and I am sure many of you feel the same. We are going to have so much fun! See our website for all

Social isolation and Alzheimer’s initiative Do you or someone you know suffer from being isolated from friends, family, or the outside world? Do you know of someone, or know caregivers, that are battling the fight against Alzheimer’s? As we move through 2020, our centers are taking part in new State-wide initiatives to help those in need, by building upon our existing programs & activities to try to make a difference in the lives of those that are most vulnerable. If you have ideas of what you would like to see us expand upon, or would like to learn more about our current efforts, please give our Outreach departments a call, and we’d be happy to go over these new and upcoming changes!

Census It’s a Census year, and did you know that our centers will be available to assist you in the completion of your form? This is a mandatory form required by law to complete and is now being offered to be completed online. This is vital to the success

v a e h I E v s e n r had! o i t a c It’s One of the Best Va Immediately following my discharge from CGH for a total hip replacement, I came to Regency Garden Unit for extended skilled care. A patient in my condition is nearly 100% dependent on others for assistance in all areas of life. When I handed over my care to your staff I did so with the belief that they would take care of me and that they cared about me as a person. The entire staff followed through in every way possible with respect to my beliefs, that they would take care of me and would do so in a manner that demonstrated they cared about me as a person. You have much to be grateful for in the staff you have. I extend my deepest gratitude to all staff at Regency Care for the part they had in my healing.
