2 From the LCCOA

Executive Director By Susan Lawler

I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing Easter. This clearly was an unusual Easter; I was on Zoom most of the day visiting with family and friends. For those of you who do not know what Zoom is, it is a free way to visit on-line with your family, friends or host a meeting. If you want to learn more regarding Zoom contact our staff at 815288-9236. We will be glad to help you join. The Little Black Box Instead of the little black dress we have the little black box. This is a great way to communicate with the staff here at LCCOA. If you have paperwork for Outreach, this is a secure way to provide them with your documents. Even though the hard working postal workers are delivering mail to us each day, we felt we needed to give our clients another avenue to deliver their information. Always keep in mind that our staff and myself are here every

day to assist you with your needs. We are answering phone calls, e-mails, Facebook, website questions and of course all correspondence by mail or the little black box.

Space Between the Doors We have established a mini library in the space between the doors. The books and videos are free; (please do not return them). We are thrilled that so many people are stopping by and utilizing our new mini library. Please drop us a note and let us know what type of books and videos you would like us to add to our library. The space between the doors is also a great spot to display your art work. So continue to send in your photos.

Technology Please contact us for your needs, we have been calling all of our members, both past and present; just checking in

From the WCSC Executive Director By Tori McDaniel We hope you are staying healthy and doing well! As I write this letter in the middle of April, I want you to know that we miss each of you and hope

to see you soon. We know our temporary closure has been extremely difficult for many of you. We apologize for any added stress this may have

on them to see if we can help. We do need to hear from you. I know technology is a problem for many, and we are working on a solution. We here at LCCOA are in the process of providing or making an instructional video to help explain how to use your phones, computers, and tablets. If you are having difficulty with your phone or computer give a us a call ; we make no promises that we will have a solution; but we are happy to assist.

at tinyurl.com/creativitycontest2020 or by contacting us at 815-288-9236.

Thank you

Please check out our creativity contest; which involves craft making, art and creative writing. I love story telling. I am sure many of you have wonderful stories of your past; we are waiting for you to share them. All you wonderful, marvelous artist out there, don’t be shy “Art is in the Eyes of the Beholder”. Just take Andy Warhol, he drew a can of soup. I know it is about the symbolism, so send us those cans of soup or whatever, we are waiting patiently for your work. Mark your calendars the contest runs until May 19th and we will have 19 prizes to give away. Just a little humor to go along with Covid-19. Submission are online

It is time to thank our generous supporters of Lee County Council on Aging. Without their support LCCOA would not be able to exist. Even if it is $1.00 or $10.00, every dollar counts towards paying for our utilities, phone and internet. In saying this, we recently received a lovely card and donation from Crest Foods. The card said “A little help during these trying times”. Thank you Crest Foods for thinking of LCCOA, we know this is also, a difficult time for your company. Your kindness is greatly appreciated. My final thank you goes to Maureen Eccles, Vicki Frazer and Aaliyah Baker for their hard work in cleaning up our garden. They spent a day removing shrubs, weeds, dead plants and you name it. Connie Edson, was a God sent, she took home bags and bags of debris. Thank you all for caring and keeping LCCOA looking beautiful during this pandemic. Until next time, Lee County Council on Aging a place where you belong a place to call home. – Susan

caused but please know your health and the health of our staff members is our top priority. We will all be together again! Our Outreach Dept. is still here to help with License sticker discounts and Medicare questions, along with information and assistance. Please call us, at 815-622-9230 as we have been checking our messages daily and promptly returning your calls to continue to help

you during these unique times. In the meantime, enjoy the sunshine and look for alternative ways to connect with loved ones. A few ideas include: social media, video chat apps such as zoom, and just picking up the phone. I know this is such a hard time but try your best to be positive. Remember that positivity breads positivity. See you soon, Tori

AT THE POST HOUSE

feel, a person could attend a fancy event in the most beautiful place and still not enjoy themselves or feel welcome. How many of you have experienced an unfriendly server in the nicest venue and walked away with a chip on your shoulder, versus the coffee shop server with the best personality making your day with their kind words and smile. We at LCCOA Post House Ballroom all strive to give you the best experience we can. It is all about how you are treated and your experiences. I had a

very nice conversation with one of our members the other day. He proceeded to mention that with the shelter in place brought on by the Covid-19 virus people seem to be relearning how to slow down, spend time with their loved ones and reach out to others by phone, email etc. We are coming together, when not together. These past few weeks I have learned more about bringing people together, without being together. Our staff has been making wellness phone calls, delivering lunches with special notes,

having art contests, leaving movies and books in our doorway for people to borrow, and decorating outside with Easter Eggs filled with special notes inside for people to take. We are trying to give you a warm smile during these unexpected times. Don’t get me wrong, I still prefer having you all at LCCOA and filling the Ballroom with events. I know that we all will be together again soon. Stay safe and happy, Maureen Eccles

AT THE EMPORIUM

Emporium looks forward to springing back to life Store stocked with bargains, waiting to get the all clear Spring greetings from The Emporium Thrift Center. We wish we could say that to all of you in person at the store. As everyone knows, we are closed due to the COVID-19. As soon as we are

given the “all clear,” we will open the door and look forward to seeing all of you! We have shelves of Easter items and they will be reduced – an opportunity for all our smart shoppers to get a bargain. More exciting, we will have all the racks full of spring and summer clothing – time to get out the shorts, capris, swim suits, and T-shirts. I want to give all the golfers out there a tip: We have golf balls! An

industrious gentleman out there, who is a great golf ball hunter, brought us a big supply. Our thanks to him. Last time I was in the store, we also had a great set of left-handed golf clubs. Some other bargains: biking helmets, flower pots, and yard decorations. Hope to see all of you soon at 115 W. Third St., Sterling. Once we’re back up and running, we’ll be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 5 days a week,

closed on Wednesdays and Sundays. Our phone number is 815535-0368. We will take donations anytime we are open and we will help you get them into the store; just let us know you are at the curb. We have always had curbside service for drop-offs. We miss each one of you and hope we will be back together soon, but we must stay in as requested for everyone’s safety. Happy Spring!

Managing an event venue means I take on many responsibilities. There are the responsibilities of filling the calendar, hiring appropriate help for the events, working with the client to ensure every detail is covered, overseeing the refreshments (yes, that does include coffee and water, ha!) and much more. My other responsibilities are with LCCOA – planning and setting up their events as well. There is a great deal of work that goes into LCCOA event planning. Bringing people together is the easy part. It’s how you make them

v a e h I E v s e n r had! o i t a c It’s One of the Best Va Immediately following my discharge from CGH for a total hip replacement, I came to Regency Garden Unit for extended skilled care. A patient in my condition is nearly 100% dependent on others for assistance in all areas of life. When I handed over my care to your staff I did so with the belief that they would take care of me and that they cared about me as a person. The entire staff followed through in every way possible with respect to my beliefs, that they would take care of me and would do so in a manner that demonstrated they cared about me as a person. You have much to be grateful for in the staff you have. I extend my deepest gratitude to all staff at Regency Care for the part they had in my healing.

“I moved to Resthave 9 months ago to be closer to my daughter and I’m so glad I did. Everyone including the staff and residents are genuine and friendly. They made me feel at home right away. I have made some friends and have had great conversations. There are activities everyday and I especially enjoy fitness. The food is good and you have a say in what you eat, which is a plus. I loved what I saw the minute I walked in the building. The facility is clean and bright. The staff is very nice and care about you.”

Care Beyond Compare Liberty Court Assisted Living & Memory Care At Liberty Court Assisted Living & Memory Care, we know how hard it is to ensure the safety of our parents’ health during the COVID-19 outbreak. That’s why we are being so vigilant in protecting the seniors who live in our community. We also understand there are seniors who live in the Dixon area who don’t have the ability to get to grocery stores and pharmacies, or who are just afraid to go out into the community at this time. Liberty Court is now providing a select few furnished apartments to those seniors who are very vulnerable-those who don’t have a social network to care for them. When someone comes into our community they will: • Go through a strict screening process prior to move-in • Get three delicious meals a day • Be able to visit with family through video conferencing

• Get assistance with daily living activities as needed • Have access to their medications • Receive weekly housekeeping • Have access to a care team • Be given care beyond compare

Please call if you or someone you know needs a temporary place to go where they can be given care beyond compare in an environment where every precaution is being taken to screen those who might need to come in contact with them. A place where isolation is a little less overwhelming. Transportation team helps keep seniors safe

H

ave you met Lee County Council on Aging’s Senior Transportation Heroes? The drivers joke and laugh with the seniors just as they would a friend; they are the warm and friendly faces that greet every senior. The Transportation Department is very crucial to our Lee County senior community. Our drivers are allowing our seniors to stay in their homes during COVID-19 by dropping off lunches and making post office runs. Seniors would not be able to keep their chemo, dialysis, or doctor appointments without transportation. Getting your food picked up from the Food Pantry or a senior run to the grocery store during senior hours, we are here for you and your essential needs! The drivers have worked diligently to ensure that the buses are completely sanitized in between every passenger. These are the front line “Heroes” of LCCOA. Pictured here are just some of our amazing Transportation team: Marisa our Dispatch Manager; Jim, Mike and Connie, our 3 full-time drivers; and Dianna, one of our fill-in drivers. Not pictured here, by personal preference, is Vanessa and Mary. All of our LCCOA team deserves to be recognized, but especially those risking their health every day to ensure our riders get their essential travel needs addressed. Here’s what some of our clients have to say about our LCCOA Senior Transportation: Billy Allen and Blanche Heilguiest (COVID-19 lunch receivers) – “We really appreciate the lunches and enjoy them. Thank you!” Passenger Patricia Eckhardt thinks the transportation is wonderful, and says, “I have no family in the area, I really depend on the bus. I couldn’t get to town any other way.” Another passenger, David Edmunds reported that he “really loves riding the bus. The drivers are really so kind; they make the trips so enjoyable.” Need more information about Senior Transportation? Please call Marisa Perales at 815-2889236.
