From the LCCOA Executive Director By Susan Lawler June has arrived, and we are very busy little bees. One of our seniors came in and said “oh my, you are so, so busy”. She is absolutely right; we have had an exciting May with the Reagan Ranch Foundation, weddings, educational meeting, luncheons, chair yoga, trips, card games, Open Mic and more. Watch for all our June events, if you thought May was busy, you better get ready for June — it is packed filled with programs.

FunSavers — FunDrive

Hold on to your hats, we have more fun in store for you. The FundSavers clothing drive is back; clean out those closets, bag up your attics and basements, and bring all your items down to LCCOA. We will have a semi- truck in our parking lot on June 9th. and 10th. We challenge you to fill up our vehicle; we know you will not let us down. Our seniors always come through for us. “ Be a fundraiser hero for LCCOA.” Call your friends, neighbors, family, churches, your company where you work at, or the company your children work at. We are looking to have the biggest, and best clothing drive this year.

The person that brings in the most bags and boxes, will win a gift card to Walmart; so be a winner for yourself, and a winner for LCCOA.

Tap your toes and tap your brain

Joe will be at LCCOA on June 22nd. at 11 a.m. to present “Healthy Living for your Brain and Body”. After the presentation there will be 30 minutes of line dancing lessons, followed by lunch, and chair yoga. Please call 815-288-9236 to reserve your lunch, and enjoy a fun filled afternoon with LCCOA.

LCCOA’s Annual Prom

It is not too early to think Prom; mask are off, so we can see those handsome and pretty faces. Put on your dancing shoes and let’s rock. Tickets are $15.00 per person, appetizers, desserts, door prizes, music, and more is included. You may purchase tickets at LCCOA starting June 1. Please come out and support LCCOA. What better way to have a wonderful evening with friends and family. A cash bar is available.

Passing of our Friend

As I come to the end of my article, the painting or hiding rocks — those who can’t make that date can have fun trying to find our rocks!

What’s new this month at WCSC

By Susie Welch Thank you for all the kind feedback you’ve given me on my articles. I really enjoy hearing how you can’t wait for my next article to come out or how it’s the first thing you read in the Echo. I’ll let you know a secret: I always dreamt of being a writer. I’m living my dream! The other great thing about this job is all the wonderful people I get to work with and all the kind patrons who come in. I had always heard how kind the staff was at the Center, and let me tell you, it’s true. Everyone is so kind and so much fun to be around. If you haven’t come out for a long time, you need to. To help people remember the kind-

our seniors will be saying goodbye to Samantha. Samantha has served LCCOA’s seniors for 12 years. Her dedication to Lee County residents will be truly missed. Samantha has become part of LCCOA’s family . The staff, drivers and myself want to thank Samantha for being a wonderful co-worker and friend. In saying this we wish her success in her new adventure into the corporate world. This is a big step for our little Samantha; but we know she will shine at her new position. Farewell Samantha, we will watch for your name in the upcoming years. Don’t forget us here at LCCOA; we are anticipating your new corporation to help sponsor an event — not to be too pushy????

ness that we share at the Whiteside County Senior Center, we are launching a kindness campaign: Whiteside County Senior Center Rocks! Come help us paint smiley face rocks on June 15 at 12:30 p.m. in our new craft room. We will then hide them throughout Whiteside County for some summertime fun. As individuals find these rocks in the community, we are asking you to take a selfie with it and tag us on your Facebook page along with where you found it. Once you do that, you can leave the rock where it is or take it and hide it again. We hope to see these rocks show up in all areas of Whiteside County. Come join us for the fun of

• Golden Meals will be having a cookout on June 22 from 11 a.m. to noon and will serve your choice of hamburger, brat or hot dog, along with potato salad and baked beans.. The cost is only $3 for those 60 and over and $6 for those under 60. Please sign up so we make sure we make enough. • The Whiteside County Senior Center is partnering with CGH foundation, Morningside and the Alzheimer’s Association this month to begin a unique Alzheimer’s support group. This support group will provide activities for the loved one in the same building while the caregiver attends the meeting. The first meeting will be June 9. • The Sauk Computer Users Group has stepped up to fill in for the WACC IT students while they are off of school.

passing of our dear friend is always a difficult, yet personally rewarding to share our love ones with all our seniors. It allows LCCOA, and myself, to remember our dear friends who have supported and participated in our programs here at LCCOA. This pass month Jessie Ware passed from our arms into our heavenly father’s. Jessie will be deeply missed. As her final days came to pass, she still had that spark of light that made Jessie the person we all loved. Jessie was truly a little fire ball. Her energy was to be admired, and her kindness will never be forgotten. We remember the days when her and Nell Noony would dance up a storm with their Zumba dancing. We know Nell is waiting for her with open arms, to greet her dear friend. I cannot end this without mentioning the daily phone calls we received from Jessie, she was a joy to converse with; we specially loved the way she would plan out her days and weeks. We would add numerous rides for her through our Transportation Department; we truly enjoyed driving Jessie all over town. It is sad to know we will not hear her voice each morning, or drive her to her many destinations. Jessie will always be a part of LCCOA, if no longer in person, she will be with us in spirit. Good-bye dear friend there is a bus waiting for you in heaven; “We love you Jessie.” LCCOA: A place where you belong, a place to call home. — Susan SCUG will be available Monday thru Thursday from 8:30 till 11:30 a.m. to assist you with any technology issue you might have. Dorothy and Ada have also stepped up for anyone wanting to learn how to knit during Knitting Club. If you’ve always wanted to learn, there’s no time like the present! It’s never too late to learn how to quilt or learn to play Pinochle — groups are waiting for you to show up at the Center. • The Senior Center’s food pantry is here to help you if you need food, Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m.. Come for lunch at 11 and stay for a presentation or movie until 1 p.m. when the pantry opens. Any leftover fresh items are available the next day also. We hope to be able to announce another new program within the next few months — we are still waiting to hear whether our grant application has been approved. But let me give you a hint: It will be life changing if you participate! See you soon, Susie

Farewell, my friends — You will be missed! Dear LCCOA Friends, It is my sincere wish for you all, to be happy, healthy and well. I write to you today, my very last “article,” to say farewell to you all. My time here has come to an end as I venture off for new beginnings on a whole new career path, an offered opportunity I can’t pass up. By the time you are reading this I will be gone: My last day was set for Friday, May 27, 2022. I have assisted so many of you through the years and many of you have left imprints on my heart, and will never be forgotten. As a small agency we get to know people pretty well, and I’ve come to know you as friends and family, not just as clients and someone to serve. I’ve grown here, been promoted and offered new opportunities, these of which allowed me to excel as a person, as your Elder Benefits Specialist, your Assistant Director, and hopefully as someone you have felt comfortable with from day one. I’ve lost friends along the way; clients, co-workers, colleagues, all of whom touched my life in some way. I’ve also gained so much, from each person I’ve met along the way, to those I’ve helped to save money, taught the basics of Medicare too, helped find a prescription plan, connected them with services, and provided an outlet for emotions to flow. Those who’ve given me praise and those who provided constructive criticism. You’ve helped me, as

My next chapter begins, but the words already written will not be forgotten. I won’t lose sight of who I am or who I want to be because each of you has ingrained a special spark within me ... You’ve lifted me up on my bad days and many of you have shared in my successes and growth, and good days. Thank you. You will be missed. Samantha Harazin much as I’ve helped you, and in some ways, maybe more. You filled my life with purpose, passion and a desire to be better, live better and work harder. A mission to help fight for what is right, to stand up for those who may not be able to stand up for themselves, and to protect you as I would protect my own family when I was able. You have given my life meaning outside of my family and you’ve allowed me to be me, all while doing this. You’ve provided me the platform I’ve needed to get to this point in my life: A place that I can now help to protect someone’s future in a whole new way from what I do now. My next chapter begins, but the words already written will not be for-

gotten. I won’t lose sight of who I am or who I want to be because each of you has ingrained a special spark within me. Thank you. You’ve made me feel like a person and not just a “worker drone,” you’ve lifted me up on my bad days and many of you have shared in my successes and growth, and good days. Thank you. You will be missed, but perhaps one day we will cross paths again. To my agency family, both past and present, thank you for all you’ve done to help contribute to my successes, learn from my failures, and be present in mind to stand up and keep giving it my all. We spend much of our lives with our work families — often more than our home families — and that can sometimes trying, especially in a small agency like ours. In spite of the differences in personalities, backgrounds, race, religion, or anything you can comprise, we have prevailed to build an agency family and to draw strength from one another. I wish for LCCOA to continue to grow in success, strength and financial stability and to be here for the future, even if I’m not able to be a part of it. This center has been around long before I got here and will be here long after I’ve gone,. I just hope I’m able to leave a small imprint on the people I’ve met along the way. For all you’ve done for me, thank you. Very Truly Yours, Samantha Harazin

Euchre Fridays at 12:30 p.m. Euchre, called the “poor man’s poker,” is one of the most popular card games in the Midwest. Some stories say that Euchre came to America with the Pennsylvania Germans. Other stories say it came over with French soldiers. Farmer’s Hand, Poor Man’s Hand, Bottom Hand, Grandma’s Hand are some of the many nicknames given to a particular “hand” one might be given during the game. One thing you can be sure of: Everybody at the table has an opinion as to what just happened! Come for the cards; come back again for the people you met.

Mexican Train Dominoes Fridays at 1 p.m. The game Americans call Mexican Train is originally a variation on a Chinese game called Pai Gow, which emerged in China before 960 A.D. Chinese laborers brought the game with them when they came to Cuba to work in the sugar cane fields. Then they and Cuban laborers brought the game with them when they came to America to help build the railroads. It became immensely popular with the Mexican laborers also, and that’s how the game got its name. Join the game, and develop your skills at concentration!
