2 From the LCCOA

Executive Director By Susan Lawler

Lee County Council on Aging is anticipating a busy July. The staff and I have truly missed all of our amazing seniors. LCCOA is moving forward with a soft re-opening on 07/01/2020. Our doors will still be closed; but we will start receiving face-to-face appointments. We are excited to see your lovely faces once again. It has been a trying time, and for some of our seniors, very devastating. It will still be a while before our Seniors can participate in all our fun activities, but little by little life will get back to the “New Normal.”

We love Wednesdays LCCOA’s staff, drivers and myself are very busy sending cards, making phone calls, delivering lunches, creating educational videos; and now we have partnered with United Way to help our children, seniors and community, with additional lunches on Wednesday’s. Wednesday’s is a great opportunity for LCCOA’s staff and myself to visit other areas of LEE County. On Wednesday’s, plan on seeing us at Paw Paw, Amboy, Franklin Grove and Ashton. Wednesday’s are truly a fun day, and LCCOA is helping to bring life back

to the community. LCCOA’s staff and myself are impressed with the safety measures each community has taken. The children are keeping their distance from each other and wearing their mask; as they approach our lunch table, and the seniors stay in their cars as we hand the bags through the window; no touching ever occurs. Hurray for Lee County a model community; in talking about model communities; LCCOA received an e-mail from Northwestern Illinois Area Agency on Aging congratulating LCCOA on a wonderful job the agency is doing, and to acknowledge LCCOA as a Model Agency. We are thrilled to be recognized; LCCOA’s staff and myself work very hard because we are passionate about our work, and we truly care about all our seniors. When one of our seniors hurt or becomes ill, we fill their pain; and when one of our seniors passes away we feel the loss.

The Passing of our Friend Recently we loss Donna Missman, one of our beloved crafters. Donna was a sweet, kind and gentle soul; never a harsh word, always

From the WCSC Executive Director By Tori McDaniel As July is approaching we are normally planning for the projects we plan to accomplish the upcoming fiscal year. As this fiscal year closes I’m a bit saddened. We were on target to meet many of our goals before COVID hit. Planning for the upcoming year frankly feels hard. What does our new normal

look like? As work our way through figuring out our new normal, you are at the forefront of our mind. We want to ensure that whatever we do, you will be safe. So what are we going to do?

Transit Public Transportation is open! We are open Monday – Friday

pleasant to everyone. One of my favorite memories of Donna is the way she would look down at her needle work, when one of the crafters would crack a joke or tell a cute story, you could see her grinning and there was a special way her eyes would twinkle, you just knew she was chuckling her heart out, but she clearly wouldn’t let on to her fellow crafters. When I would pass by and give her a nudge, she would just smile at me; she knew I knew. Donna was great supporter of LCCOA; she loved coming to the center to play Rummikub, Dominoes or a game of Bingo. She enjoyed traveling to Franklin Grove to the Meadows of Franklin Grove to play Bingo with all our new Bingo friends. She attended all of our fundraisers and day trips. My staff and I will miss this wonderful woman; LCCOA will not be the same without her. That empty chair in the living room will be a constant, but memorable reminder of the genteel woman that once ingratiated that chair. LCCOA’s staff and myself have lost a friend; but Donna will always have a special place in our hearts. Farewell Dear Donna there is a seat in heaven with your name; just waiting for you to pick up your needles and create a wonderful quilt. May God be with you and your family.

A Lending Hand Before I sign off, I would like to share a story about a special person. from 6am to 6pm. To ensure social distancing we are taking one rider at a time. Riders as well as drivers are required to wear a mask to ensure we follow the Governor’s protocol. We encourage you to call us as soon as you know you have a transit need. We are also not taking subscription trips to allow everyone the opportunity to ride. This means that if you ride with us frequently, you will need to call us each time. We hope that we are able to ease some restrictions as we move into phase 4. We will keep you updated!

WCSC At this time we have not been

Aaliyah Baker is our right hand, BEST Employee. Aaliyah jumps in and helps us whenever or where ever we need help. One of Aaliyah’s duties is delivering lunches to our seniors. Our seniors love her smiling face and her willingness to help. Aaliyah never complains, and does her job with enthusiasm. One day last month Aaliyah was delivering lunches to one of our Senior’s, as she was leaving the bus and walking towards the house, she noticed the door was slightly opened; as she peered in, there sitting on the floor was the homeowner, he could not get back into his chair. She asked him if he was okay and he said yes. He had slid off his walker chair and could not get back up. She helped him up and provided him his lunch. (LCCOA called his family). If Aaliyah was not there to bring him his lunch he could have been on the floor for hours or even days. The quick thinking and kindness of this young woman was admirable. She risked her safety to help another human being. Aaliyah of coursed had her mask and gloves on; but there is still that risk in these days of Covid-19. LCCOA is grateful to Aaliyah; and wish we could have ten more of her. So when you see our Aaliyah running about town delivering lunches, please give her a big smile and a thank you. Until next time, LCCOA a place where you belong, a place to call home.

given an update from IDOA. Our funding body NIAAA is still recommending no face to face meetings. Due to this, the center is still closed to the public but the staff can assist you by phone. You can call us at 815-622-9230 and we will assist you the best that we can. We hope to be able to open in a modified way soon!

Emporium The Emporium will also be closed to the public until further notice. We want to ensure everyone’s health and safety and will follow IDOA guidelines. We hope to see you soon, – Tori

AT THE POST HOUSE

• July 2020

Covid-19 has had a large impact on venues around the world. Many weddings and events have been forced to reschedule or even cancel. My prime focus is to be informative and flexible with our clients. Our couples have been faced with some difficult decisions as so much work has gone into their big day. Not only do they have to deal with their venue, they are also juggling various vendors. The average wedding employs 15-20 vendors. It takes a lot of time and energy to re-coordinate an event. With the state’s mandated phases for mass gatherings, many couples have asked for assistance with making a decision. Unfortunately, the options are few. Many couples have continued to get married with a small gathering of family and friends and reschedule the Ballroom for a future reception. They are planning to renew their vows and have that big celebration. I think that’s a win-win! I encourage all my couples to set a tentative date in 2021 in order to provide time to contact the vendors. Your wedding is a lifetime in the making. Who wouldn’t want to have that special day Covid free? In order to be prepared, we have been busy implementing safety measures for our staff and customers. Our bar will have a glass structure on it, and there will be proper signage and hand sanitizers installed. We are staying up to date with the CDC guidelines, providing a safe and healthy environment for our guests and staff. The future is bright — The Post House Ballroom has been the home for many happy and wonderful celebrations. It promises to never let you down. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns. Book your 2021 events soon! We all need something to look forward too. Stay healthy and safe, Maureen Eccles

An update on the Tax-Aide Program We continue to hope we can restart the AARP Tax-Aide Program so that we can do taxes for those who had their appointments cancelled. If we are successful, we will be calling to set new appointments in the order of the dates of the original appointment. In the meantime, if you are interested in doing your taxes online, AARP has a new site available. Check out AARPFOUNDATION.org/ TAXHELP, then choose “Free Tax Preparation from AARP Foundation Tax-Aide.” This will bring you to the page “How AARP Tax-Aide Can Help You Today.” Select the yellow button, “Get Help with Tax Preparation,” and you will find two software choices to use for free Federal and State returns, if you meet the requirements listed. You can also sign up for assistance to use the programs. Another alternative is to determine whether you have a filing requirement. This is based on the following table: If your status is ... Single Single Married filing jointly Married filing jointly Married filing jointly Married filing separate Head of household Head of household Qualifying widower Qualifying widower

and on 12/31/2019 Then file a return if your you were ... gross income is at least ... Under 65 $12,200 65 or older $13,850 Both under 65 $24,400 One spouse 65 or older $25,700 Both spouses 65 or older $27,000 Any age $5 Under 65 $18,350 65 or older $20,000 Under 65 $24,400 65 or older $25,700

ITAC — Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation; a non-profit agency that supplies phones for the hard of hearing and free devices to those in need. We are a test center for these free devices; see our Outreach department to learn more. Grants – What we apply for each year; Federal, State and Local grants are how we primarily support our agency. Grants, however, need what is called a local match in order to keep them, which is where your donations help to support us even more than you know. SHIP — Senior Health Insurance Program; in Illinois this program is run by the Department of Aging. SHIPs are offered in all 50 states. Our Outreach personnel are SHIP certified in order to provide you the services you need when dealing with all things Medicare. We are not affiliated with DHS but do assist in the application process and minor education on the programs that overlap with our job objectives. Dixon – Where we are located. Donations – What we need to survive and ensure our future is your future, in assistance. Medicaid – Offered through DHS and serves as an insurance for those who meet the criteria, there are many types of Medicaid insurance. SNAP — Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program; offered through DHS as a way to help you to purchase groceries. Part D — The prescription assistance you need when you are starting Medicare, typically at age 65. Some exceptions apply, and without it you may be penalized for not taking it. Our Outreach department can help you in understanding your options and even in the enrollment process. Post House Ballroom — A critical part of our LCCOA foundation as its proceeds directly support our agency. By renting our facility you are directly supporting our Lee County senior community. MAPD — Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan; also known as a Medicare replacement plan or Part C of Medicare. This combines the four various parts of Medicare, generally into one piece. Our Outreach department can assist with education, basic plan features and enrollment. Golden Echo – Our monthly newspaper that Sauk Valley Media prints for us; we share this with Whiteside County Senior Center. Fundraisers — These are of great importance to our agency and its survival. Without your membership, contributions and fundraising dollars we would not be able to be here to support our senior community.

Care Beyond Compare Liberty Court Assisted Living & Memory Care At Liberty Court Assisted Living & Memory Care, we know how hard it is to ensure the safety of our parents’ health during the COVID-19 outbreak. That’s why we are being so vigilant in protecting the seniors who live in our community. We also understand there are seniors who live in the Dixon area who don’t have the ability to get to grocery stores and pharmacies, or who are just afraid to go out into the community at this time. Liberty Court is now providing a select few furnished apartments to those seniors who are very vulnerable-those who don’t have a social network to care for them. When someone comes into our community they will: • Go through a strict screening process prior to move-in • Get three delicious meals a day • Be able to visit with family through video conferencing

A Gift of Sympathy

Please call if you or someone you know needs a temporary place to go where they can be given care beyond compare in an environment where every precaution is being taken to screen those who might need to come in contact with them. A place where isolation is a little less overwhelming.

That Keeps Growing

Plant a living memorial in honor of your departed loved one.

We are doing what we can to keep YOU safe; our buses are sanitized between every passenger. Give us a call, so we may help you get where you need to go. Opportunities are opening up every day.
