2 From the LCCOA
Executive Director By Susan Lawler Doors Open – Doors Close! It just took us decades, but we finally have new automatic handicap-accessible doors. What an improvement to the Center! The hardest part is to remember to hit the striker to open the doors. We are so use to pulling our entryway doors open we forget we no longer need to struggle. LCCOA could not have provided these doors to our seniors without the help of Dixon Community Trust, Don Knight, Harrison Insurance, Dixon VFW, Diana Owens, Hal
Weaver, Oliver’s Corner Market, Sterling Federal Bank, Essner Hayes Insurance, Ron and Cathy Reglin, Jean and Richard McGrain, Jessie Ware, Leydig Center, Midland States Bank, Open Mic gang, every person that put money in our donation jar and of course those that empty their piggy banks of change. Thank you, and again thank you, for your generosity, support and genuine caring for your fellow seniors. LCCOA and the Post House Ballroom have a wonderful summer planned for our com-
From the WCSC Executive Director By Tori McDaniel As I write this, we are in the very beginning of June. Due to this, you might already know the surprise I’m going to share by the time the Echo is published. However, I’m SO excited about our news! Over the past two years we have made a great deal of changes at the center. Some were welcomed with open arms and others were not. As we worked through these changes, we reminded ourselves that it was for the better of the center. The center is now in a positive direction and now with con-
tinued support it will thrive. I would like to thank you for continuing to work with us despite the changes we have made. Over the years our parking lot deteriorated. The lot is now unsafe and frankly unusable in many areas when it rains. We have often talked about replacing the parking lot, but it wasn’t feasible. I am beyond excited to inform you that a new parking lot is now feasible! With the help of the Emporium, community donations, and grant funds we will
munity. On Saturday, August 3 from 7 to 11 p.m., LCCOA/ PHB presents a carnival for all adults ages 21 and over: Come One, Come All! Step Right up and Have a Ball! Fun includes appetizers, Super Red Hot Karaoke DJ, a dance-off, carnival games, door prizes, game prizes and much, much more. Tickets are $25 or 2 for $45. Tickets may be purchased at LCCOA, Venier’s Jewelry, and from LCCOA staff or Board members. There will be a cash bar. Don’t miss out on the greatest show in Lee County. On August 14 we will be hosting our annual Luau, with fabulous food, DJ, door prizes and games. You know you had a wonderful time last year, so come back and enjoy a Luau of a night. Tickets will be mailed or may be purchased at LCCOA. Don’t forget to
watch for your tickets in the mail. What is a summer without a fundraiser to help LCCOA to pay for our new air conditioner and an opportunity to discard old clothing, bedding, blankets, towels, shoes and purses? On August 15 we will be having a clothing drive to raise funds. LCCOA will have a truck parked outside from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with staff to help you unload your vehicles. It’s a great time to clean your closets, attics and basements and help LCCOA. Mark your calendars for these three events in August; we will be watching and waiting for you – without you it will not be the same! Until next time, LCCOA a place where you belong a place to call home ... – Susan
be completely re-doing our parking lot. Our project is set to begin at the end of June if the weather permits which is why you might already be aware of this news. The project will take approximately three to four weeks to complete and we will remain open during the project. The project will be completed in stages so you will always have a place to park when you come to visit. Parking places may change numerous times throughout July due to the construction, but it will be well worth it. The front lot will be extended in an effort to make the lot more friendly. The front lot is rather small and at times causes a great deal of congestion. We are hoping the extension will alleviate this. The front sidewalk will also be repaired
to help keep pooling water away from the building. The back-gravel lot will be paved, and the large paved lot will get an overhaul. The back lot will be paved and will also have a new drain which will help keep the water away. This will make coming to the center in the winter months much safer! At this time, we will not be making any changes to the gravel lot where the buses park. We hope you are just as excited as we are about this project! We look forward to your safety no longer being a concern. We also hope you’ll feel more secure in venturing to the center during the winter months. I would like to thank everyone in advance for their patience and understanding during the construction. Sincerely, Tori

AT THE EMPORIUM
Greetings from The Emporium Thrift Store to start off the month of July. Let’s see what happens in the month of July; Celebrating the Fourth of July, hot weather, picnic and swim time. A lazy time of year, right? At the Emporium we have lots of things that fit into that schedule. We have coolers, plastic kitchen ware, tablecloths, extra bowls, pitchers etc. We will have out all the red, white and blue.
Maybe a new decorative flag to fly in your yard or flower pots for the gardener. Summer is picture-taking time too. We have a large selection of frames – some special ones that are for a special person, like your grandson or granddaughter, or help you remember the special vacation you have enjoyed. Come in and check those out. While you are there, you might find a picture for your wall or a frame for a proj-
ect you are working on. We enjoy seeing a craft project that is completed with one of our frames or mats or decorative papers. We have all our “summertime “ jewelry on display now – lighter colors, lighter weights, add a colorful bracelet or earrings to compliment your outfit. Young shoppers love to come in and jewelry shop. It is a fun way to treat your granddaughter, and the price is reasonable.
Our book department is still loaded. Fiction, non-fiction, magazines, large “coffee table books,” and a whole shelf of religious books and lesson materials. Stop in and see us at 115 W. Third St., Sterling. We’re open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday thru Saturday, closed Wednesday. We take donations anytime we are open. We are glad to help you unload; just come in and tell us you are at the curb. See you soon!!

CHANGES
WCSC – IN BRIEF Volunteers’ Thank You really hit the spot Our Volunteer Breakfast was held June 6. A delicious catered breakfast was enjoyed by those who attended. There were more than 3,500 hours donated by volunteers in 2018. This is equivalent to more than $45,000 in pay. We treasure the time our volunteers donated. THANK YOU!
For July, we would like to briefly highlight and describe a few of the programs, along with the program guidelines, that are available to our clients. The Outreach Departments at both WCSC and LCCOA are great resources to help connect you to programs and services that support your independence and help to save you money! If you are interested in any of the programs below, please call us at WCSC: 815622-9230 Ext. 194, or LCCOA: 815-288-9236. Benefits Access Application (BAA) The BAA program is for applicants 65 years of age and older, or applicants under 65 years of age and on disability. Income limits are as follows: household of 1-$27,610, 2-$36,635, 3-$45,657. There is no asset limit. This program provides a 2-year discount of $75 on your license plate sticker. Along with the sticker discount, an applicant can also apply for the Ride Free Transit card to be used in cities that provide fixed-route transportation. Social Security Extra Help
(low-income subsidy) If you are on a Medicare drug plan, have low income and assets, and are in need of help to afford your prescription premium and copays, the Social Security Extra Help program may be something to ask about. To be eligible, an applicant must be at or under 150% federal poverty level in gross monthly income ($1,581 for an individual and $2,134 for a couple) and must have assets at or below $14,390 for individual, or $28,720 for a married couple. Not sure if you may qualify? Call us, and we would be happy to make an appointment to submit an application for you. Medicaid/Medicare Savings Program/SNAP (food stamp) applications We can assist our clients with filing Medicaid, Medicare Savings Program, and SNAP applications. Medicaid can help with medical costs. The Medicare Savings Program can, at the minimum, help to pay the Part-B premium if you have Medicare. SNAP can provide the applicant a LINK card to be able to purchase food. Each
program has their own guidelines. • Medicaid guidelines are: 100% FPL: $1,041 for individuals, $1,409 for couples gross monthly income. Asset limits are $2,000 for individuals, $3,000 for couples. • Medicare Savings Program guidelines are 135% FPL: $1,426 for individuals, $1,923 for couples, gross monthly income. Asset limits are $7,730 for individuals, $11,600 for couples. • Food stamp guidelines are 200% FPL for households with persons aged 60+ and/or households with persons on disability: $2,023 for individuals, $2,743 for couples, gross monthly income. ITAC free amplified phones, cell phone amplifier, and equipment LCCOA and WCSC Outreach Departments want to help you hear better on the phone! If you are an Illinois resident, and have a landline or cell phone, and are hard of hearing, ask us how we can get you connected to this amazing program for a free amplified phone, cell phone amplifier, or equipment!
v a e h I E v s e n r had! o i t a c It’s One of the Best Va Immediately following my discharge from CGH for a total hip replacement, I came to Regency Garden Unit for extended skilled care. A patient in my condition is nearly 100% dependent on others for assistance in all areas of life. When I handed over my care to your staff I did so with the belief that they would take care of me and that they cared about me as a person. The entire staff followed through in every way possible with respect to my beliefs, that they would take care of me and would do so in a manner that demonstrated they cared about me as a person. You have much to be grateful for in the staff you have. I extend my deepest gratitude to all staff at Regency Care for the part they had in my healing.

Busload of busy travelers had fun in Nashville It was pouring down rain the morning of our departure. Everyone seemed to be excited about the trip but preoccupied with the weather. As the bus rolled down the road, the sky seemed to be clearing and the sunshine was out – much like our moods. With such a long winter and gloomy spring, this trip was much needed. Nashville’s weather was months ahead of ours. The welcomed sunshine, green grass and blooming flowers were appreciated. This tour was an action-packed one. We were one busload of busy travelers. From The Grand Ole Opry Show and back stage tour, guided bus tour of Nashville, Opryland Flatboat rides, dinner theaters, Belle Mead Plantation Tour, Country Music Hall of Fame, and enjoying downtown Nashville, we had it going on. Diamond Tours did a great job! I have to admit that I wasn’t sure what to expect while leading a group of strangers on a Diamond Tour trip. I totally lucked out to have such a fantastic group of people. We may have begun the trip as strangers, but I know we ended the trip as friends. Thank you to all for joining our trip! I am looking forward to our next trip to Chicago! This is the perfect late summer getaway. The trip will be Sept. 10-12, 2019, and includes two nights lodging with five meals (two breakfasts, one lunch and two dinners). We will visit the World-Famous 360 Chicago (formerly the John Hancock Observatory), Navy Pier and Chicago’s Money Museum, take an architectural luncheon cruise aboard the Odyssey Chicago River, and experience a night of dinner and entertainment. Please join me! Call 815288-9236 for more information on the trip. Maureen Eccles Post House Manager
