Summer has come, and gone, and fall is in the air. We still have some warm days ahead of us, but the evenings are getting cooler. We are entering Indian Summer; as a child my grandfather, and I would love to read the article in the Chicago Tribune about Indian Summer. Those were fond memories — and speaking of memories, our second hardback edition of our senior book, “Back in My Day,” will be coming out soon.
Terry and I love reading all the stories written by our seniors. They are truly wonderful, and clearly have jogged our memories of past events in our own lives. We encourage you to continue writing, and sharing your lives with all of us here at LCCOA, and the Lee County community. We cherish these stories; they have

Where did the year go? It is Open Enrollment time! We are looking forward to seeing all of you. Many of our seniors we see only once a year, and others we get to see your smiling faces weekly; either way give Amy a call and set your appointment for your Medicare Part D drug program. Even if you are planning to keep your same plan, you should allow us to check to confirm all your drugs are still on your present plan. Insurance plans change yearly, and your drugs may no longer be covered or the cost has risen — either way, you should always verify your plan each year. Pick up the phone and call LCCOA at 815-288-9236. Open Enrollment is from Oct. 15-Dec. 7. The time will fly by and appointments will book-up fast.
Checks are available every Monday from 10:30 a.m. until noon, no appointment necessary. We would like you to come every week to check your blood pressure, and then stay for chair yoga — make a day

Jerusalem is filling up, and this trip is definitely going. We can take more people, but hurry up to get this price locked in. Our Memorials of World War II trip is taking off. We knew this was going to be a great trip, we just didn’t realize we would have so many seniors interested. Thank you, seniors, for supporting LCCOA on all our adventures. We are thrilled we have made so many of our seniors’ dreams come true.
This past week we have lost another one of our favorite seniors. Ed Higby was just a wonderful, happy and kind man. He gave so much to the community, he will be truly missed. Ed served our Dixon Fire Department for 45 years. He was a true fighter and every day he fought the battle. Our drivers and staff admired this gentleman for his strength and courage. Upon hearing of his passing it brought tears to the eyes of our drivers, who truly knew Ed and Peggy. Our hearts go out to his family. May heaven watch over Ed, as Ed watched over all of us. Farewell, dear friend, until we meet again!

Open enrollment is coming! The Medicare Open Enrollment Period (OEP), which occurs each year from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, gives you the chance to review and make changes to your current Medicare coverage. Here at the Senior Center we try and make this process as easy as possible, so we are doing the same as last year.
Starting Sept. 18, you can call in and request your paperwork to be mailed or you can pick it up if you prefer. Once we receive the completed paperwork we will call you to schedule your appointment.
If you are in a Medicare Advantage plan your OEP (Open Enrollment period) is January 1 to March 31, 2024. This is for people who are in an MA plan and want to switch to a different MA plan or leave an MA plan. We have four certified SHIP counselors available to assist you with all of your Medicare questions and needs. Please call Outreach at 622-9230 ext. 131. Medicare tip for September — Medicare covers a variety of vaccinations. Adults need to keep their vaccinations up to date because immunity from childhood vaccines can wear off over time. Talk to your doctor to help you decide which vaccines are right for you. Outreach is available every Monday for walk-ins from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday by appointment.
We will be hosting a flu clinic in October — stay tuned for updates.
