From the LCCOA Executive Director
touched by the kind words and sincerity of all that attended.
Passing of two friends
By Susan Lawler I cannot believe it feels like winter rather than fall. I have never had to turn on the heat until October here at the Center. Thank God we have a new furnace, (which by the way we are still paying on). Covid-19 threw a wrench in our fundraising for our furnace. I am grateful to all our supporters who have helped pay for all our other improvements in the past 2 years; we are looking toward the future when we can get back to normal.
will give everyone a chance to stock up for the holidays. See you on Fridays from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. – and shop and shop to your hearts content!
Sidewalk Sale
Dedication to Patty and Donna
The Sidewalk sale was fun; it was a shame it rained all day. It was so nice to see so many of our seniors supporting our event. LCCOA sold more than 200 items. LCCOA will set up our items every Friday until the snow comes. This
Day Of Caring United Way Day of Caring was a success as usual. The wonderful, hard-working staff from Wipfli came out and painted our benches, deck and so much more. Thank you United Way and Wipfli for all your support and caring.
The Butterfly Garden was a sad, but beautiful, dedication to the lives of two wonderful women: Patty Frey and Donna Missman. I know both these woman would be
From the WCSC Executive Director By Tori McDaniel I am happy to announce that Amy Dorathy has been named the Director of Transportation. She will oversee all things WCPT. Amy has been with us for almost 5 years. We are looking forward to the amazing work she will do and the continued growth of WCPT. We know she will lead. As for me? I decided to step
down from my position as Executive Director of the senior center. I am so very proud of the changes we have implemented over the past 2 years under my leadership. However, transit has always had my heart. I was really missing the laser focus I was able to provide transit. Due to that, I will be moving back to my role as PCOM. This
Dianne Pauser was a weekly visitor to the Senior Center. Her kind heart will truly be missed by all who knew her. Every Friday, Dianne and I would have wonderful conversations; there is a void in my life with her passing. This woman cared so much for the children she worked with, and LCCOA provided many childrens books for Dianne to purchase. Her weekly donation was her way of supporting the Center. Her goal was to help pay for our furnace. Every week she would ask, “How much more do we need?” She took pride in her contributions to a place she dearly loved. There will be no way to replace this kind and generous woman.LCCOA will not be able to fill the empty space she has left behind. LCCOA will be donating children’s books in her name. Farewell, my friend, until we meet again. Heaven is waiting for you. God speed, Dianne. LCCOA has lost another of our
means I will ensure our transit agency meets all required grant requirements as well as compliance. I’ll be able to focus on our grants. I love numbers and this is how I’ll get to spend a majority of my day! I’ll also be able to get back to working very closely with the state – all things I had been missing over the past two years. What does this mean for the Senior Center? Due to the unfortunate events COVID has caused for the center, we are still closed to the public. So for now, I will continue to oversee the center’s grants and Beth Sterk will oversee our operations. We are happy to have
friends:” Doris Miller passed away in September. She spent many hours here at LCCOA visiting with the staff and all of the crafters and card players. She so much enjoyed the friendship she developed over the years. LCCOA is truly a place to make lasting and endearing friendships; that is why Doris loved to visit LCCOA. Doris finally made the decision to join another family of friends at Heritage Square; which she spent so many wonderful days with the staff and residents. She still enjoyed reading our Golden Echo every month and visiting with old friends. Doris will be missed by LCCOA and Heritage Square, both places she called home. Until we meet again; We know Doris you will make a new home and friends in heaven; but know we will miss you. Thank you for sharing your life with LCCOA. Until next time — LCCOA a place where you belong, a place call home.
– Susan
Beth as part of our team! She does an amazing job and has a true passion for helping our seniors. She continues to work hard with our ADRC (Aging and Disability Resource Center) department to ensure they are able to assist you from the comfort of your home. When the center is once again able to reopen to the public and is ready to get back to the thriving center it once was, the board will begin the search for a new Executive Director of the Senior Center. We hope you’re doing well.

‘The Breath of God’
AT LCCOA
Medium opens the door to windows’ past Last month I provided a brief intro to our friend Gaye Miller, a well-known medium who visited the Post House Ballroom to investigate our 100-plus-year-old windows, which were donated to provide protection to our bar for our bartenders and patrons. As we watched, Gaye interacted with the past – she told the story of the windows. They were made by a gentleman from Europe, who came to this area to work. He was a carpenter, a slender tall man – possibly Amish. He tells Gaye that the windows came from a church not from this area and later installed in a home. Gaye continued to have a conversation with the gentlemen and later we found out the angel in the glass is actually the “Breath of God.” I always felt Lee County Council on Aging was blessed, but now we are truly blessed. For those of you who believe Gaye Miller investigated the historical and for those who do not, I want to feel windows that where donated to shield the that God is always present, whether in bar at the Post House Ballroom, due to antique windows or in every living Covid-19. thing. It is just a little story that reassures us that the past and the present is always intertwining. Thank you, Gaye, for giving us a little hope during this pandemic that God is still watching over us.

Process is a Little Different Due to COVID-19, both LCCOA and WCSC’s appointment processes will look different from last year. While both centers have SHIP certified staff to help you this season, comparisons and appointments will fill up quickly, and you will want to make sure that you call early to initiate your comparison process right away.LCCOA will allow for, extremely limited, face-toface appointments this season. WCSC will be conducting comparisons by remote means. Comparisons will be
completed by using a combination of any of the following: phone, USPS mail, secire drop-box, e-mail, and/or fax. Please call the LCCOA or WCSC in advance to discuss their comparison processes. For those that prefer a video conference format, comparisons may also be completed by FaceTime, Zoom, Google Meets, WebEx, etc. Further scheduling details are below.
LCCOA Call to schedule your appointment at 815-288-9236. Please be aware that LCCOA is limiting face-to-face appointments only to those who meet certain criteria, and once those appointment slots are filled, it will be by virtual means only. Our Outreach Assistant, Chelsea, will review the process of the season, update or create your file, collect your Medicare information and mymedicare.gov account login credentials, or permission to create that account on your behalf. You will be asked to supply a prescription list a minimum of 5 days prior to your scheduled appointment. The style of appointment you create will determine how the comparison results are sent to you, but all appointments will end with us calling you at your scheduled time (or your completing our screening process for in-house appointments) to review the information sent ahead of time.We will review exactly as we always have done in the past.
WCSC Call 815-622-9230 Ext. 194 to initiate your comparison process and to receive your WCSC Plan Finder Worksheet in the mail. If you leave a voice mail, please only leave 1 message; we

return your call based on the order it is received. Once you receive the worksheet from us, fill it out accurately and completely. Please attach an up-to-date, detailed, and legible drug list with it. When complete, please mail, email, or fax the worksheet back to our office ASAP. The worksheets must be returned by Nov. 23rd, 2020. When the WCSC Outreach Dept. receives the worksheet back from you, a comparison will be run based on the information that you give to us, and we will then follow-up with you. We will mail the comparisons we complete to you, along with a summary of your comparison findings. You can choose to make a follow-up phone appointment with us to discuss the results and what your next steps are after the comparisons are done. If you are happy with the results that we mail to you, and do not need a follow-up phone appointment, you are welcome to complete the next steps of enrollment on your own, or you can stay in the same drug plan. You must complete and turn in your Plan Finder Worksheet to be eligible for a comparison. Please keep in mind that we complete our comparisons on a first-come, first-serve basis, and we have limited openings. Any of our trained Outreach
staff can assist you when you call to get you started with the process. If you need to file a Benefit Access Application during the Open Enrollment window, we will only work on and complete these applications over-the-phone on Fridays.
Please Note ... This season will be different for all of us this year. We are optimistic that despite these new challenges we will still be able to assist many of you, as we have in the past. We urge you to call early to schedule your appointment at LCCOA, or start your comparison process at WCSC.Comparison slots will fill quickly this year, and both centers will not be scheduling any comparisons in the final week of Open Enrollment. This time will be used to tie up any loose ends in the season. We appreciate your patience and understanding, and we look forward to assisting you! If you are unable to get a comparison at LCCOA or WCSC, and/or need to compare plans right away, we encourage you to call 1-800-Medicare (800-633-4227) or you can contact the dedicated Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) hotline at 800-252-8966.

October is now upon us and we are looking at this next season with excitement as we have begun our process for this year’s Annual Open Enrollment Period.Open Enrollment runs each year from October 15 through December 7; this is the time when you can get into a Part D or Medicare Advantage Plan for the first time if you missed your initial enrollment, or compare and change your current plan to something that better suits your needs for the upcoming year. Both centers will be prioritizing Open Enrollment appointments during the October 15th-December 7th time period. If you require an appointment for other Outreach services during this window, please know that Open Enrollment appointments will take priority since there is a limited amount of time to make changes. We will do our best to accommodate other appointment needs and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. We appreciate your understanding as we strive to help every individual.
