2 From the LCCOA

Executive Director By Susan Lawler I guess someone spoke too loudly and said “winter”; OMG what happened to Indian Summer??? I cannot believe I had to turn on the heat at LCCOA and of course one of our furnaces did not work. You are probably saying “what is so unusual about that”; it is par for the course for this historical building. I am optimistic that Farley will work some magic and fix our 20 year old furnace. My Euchre card players didn’t notice they had no heat on Sunday’s Euchre tournament, thank God we have two other furnaces. So stay tuned to the furnace saga. I will let you know what happens next month. OCTOBER WAS A FUN-FILLED MONTH. Mo went tripping again, and took our seniors on our annual trip down the Mississippi to see the

fall foliage. Our seniors had a wonderful time and Mo, with her wonderful personality, brought smiles to all our seniors’ faces. Maureen is firing up to take our seniors to Fireside in November; all our tickets are sold; we can take back-up names for any last minute cancellations. CALLING ALL VETERANS! LCCOA will be celebrating Veteran’s Day with an Ice Cream Social on Nov. 11, 2019 from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. The wonderful women of First Congregational United Church of Christ of Lee County handmade 24 magnificent afghans and blankets for our military men and women, who courageously served our country. Please join us in thanking them for all they have done for us.

From the WCSC Executive Director By Tori McDaniel THE PASSING OF A BELOVED FRIEND ... I struggle with typing another sad message for you. We have faced a great deal of loss this year and it is almost overwhelming. As a small team, we are close, and the loss of a dear friend is extremely difficult. To have three dear friends pass in a short amount of time is beyond difficult. Celeste sadly passed away last month, and we will deeply miss her. She was a wonderful person that you could count on. She had a strong sense of faith and a great love for her dogs. I truly miss her kind and caring self. I would like to provide my deepest condolences to Celeste family.

WILL IT SNOW IN WINTER 2019– 2020? “In the U.S., this winter will be remembered for strong storms bringing a steady roofbeat of heavy rain and sleet, not to mention piles of snow. The 2020 Old Farmer’s Almanac is calling for frequent snow events—from flurries to no fewer than seven big snowstorms from coast to coast, including two in April for the Intermountain region west of the Rockies. This snow-verload will include storms pummeling Washington state and points eastward across the northern-tier states into Michigan. For the normally rain-soaked Northwest, this could mean a

CHRISTMAS IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER, come help decorate LCCOA and join in the Christmas Tree Decorating Contest. You can pick up applications and rules for the contest at LCCOA or call 815288-9236 and we would be glad to mail you an app. Santa’s workshop is everyone’s favorite event. Last year we had 265 children embark up our doors with excitement and laughter filling our halls. Mark your calendars for Dec. 7, 2019. Moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas come on down with your favorite child or two and let them shop with Santa’s Elves. The day starts with a wonderful healthy breakfast, a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus and then on up to the Ballroom to shop, shop, and shop some more. Our Little helpers will wrap your treasurers, so everyone can be surprised on Christmas morning. IT IS TIME FOR LCCOA’S THANK YOU’S! Nelson Energy is graciously sponsoring our Santa’s Workshop, and not only are they financially supporting us, they are providing helpers for the Day! KSB is providing a healthy breakfast so our little

darlings will have the energy to shop. Diane Pauser and Jessie Ware are here every week contributing and supporting LCCOA. These two ladies truly touch my heart. They know how much the Center means to all our seniors and they both have goals to help finish paying for our air conditioner. Yes I did say we still need another $807.00; so if you have a dollar or two that you can spare please drop it in our front desk jar. You know it is truly appreciated.

repeat of last winter’s record-breaking extremes, including the Snowpocalypse that dumped 20.2 inches on Seattle in February.” – 2020 Old Farmer’s Almanac The Old Farmer’s Almanac boasts an 80.5% accuracy rate – yikes! Last winter was tough enough for us. Hopefully the Old Farmer’s Almanac will be wrong, and we will end up with a mild winter. If we do end up with another snowy and cold winter, how do you know if we are closed? You can check one of the following ways: Call our main office and listen to the voice recording. I will let you know that we are closed and then you will hear our normal recording. Check the Whiteside County Senior Center or Whiteside County Public Transportation Facebook pages. Possibly check news channel 8 and channel 6. If there are several closures, we have found that they will not list us as closed on their station. Instead, they will only list us as closed on their websites.

When can you expect closures? We typically close for extreme temperatures and poor road conditions. Temperatures haven’t been an issue until lately. Unfortunately, with the extreme temperatures we have experienced it isn’t safe for our riders to wait for their bus nor is it safe for the drivers to be out in their bus. Our buses have very large doors that are constantly swinging open. We also have lift doors that are frequently open to assist riders with a mobility device. Both areas allow for the extreme temperatures to enter the bus for extended periods of time. This makes keeping the bus warm almost impossible. Our number one priority is the safety of our riders, patrons, and drivers! We know that it creates an inconvenience when we are closed, and we sincerely apologize for that, but we want you to be safe. I wish each of you a very happy Thanksgiving and I shall hope for a mild winter! Sincerely, Tori

HAVE YOU NOTICED SOMETHING DIFFERENT PARKED IN LCCOA’S PARKING LOT?? Senior transportation is back at LCCOA. You asked for it, and we are here to serve. If you need a ride contact Marisa at LCCOA. She always has a smile on her face and you actually can feel that smile in her voice. Marisa is waiting for your call, please call her at 815-288-9236 and schedule your ride. Until next time, Lee County Council on Aging: A place where you belong a place to call home. – Susan

It’s a contest with all the trimmings

Hello to November, the month of Thanksgiving. We have decorations for the season. As you host that Thanksgiving gathering we can help with any dishes or serving pieces you need. It is always fun to set a pretty table, and we have learned all the pieces do not have to match. Have a change and set a colorful table from The Emporium. Oh, yes, we have already been asked many times, “When will you be putting out Christmas”? Well, good friends, the time has arrived. As you read this article, The Emporium will be full of Christmas – from Christmas cards, wreaths, ornaments, villages ... the list goes on and on with everything you need for Christmas. We have lots of Christmas linens, throws, pillows and wall hangings. We also have the basic items such as lights, roping and gift wrap. Come on in and get a bargain. Our clothing departments are full of winter clothing and also fun colorful clothing, including lots of sweaters, also for the Christmas season. We have coats and jackets

for both men and women. Stop in and check out the shoes, boots, hats and gloves. Please watch the big windows for sale signs, and follow us on Facebook. We invite you to stop in at the Emporium Thrift Center, 115 W. Third St., Sterling. We’re open 5 days a week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Wednesday and Sunday. Call us at 815-535-0368. We take donations any time we are open. All proceeds are donated to the Whiteside County Senior Center.

Play ball! Everyone had a great time at the Chicago Cubs baseball game on Sept. 20.

v a e h I E v s e n r had! o i t a c It’s One of the Best Va Immediately following my discharge from CGH for a total hip replacement, I came to Regency Garden Unit for extended skilled care. A patient in my condition is nearly 100% dependent on others for assistance in all areas of life. When I handed over my care to your staff I did so with the belief that they would take care of me and that they cared about me as a person. The entire staff followed through in every way possible with respect to my beliefs, that they would take care of me and would do so in a manner that demonstrated they cared about me as a person. You have much to be grateful for in the staff you have. I extend my deepest gratitude to all staff at Regency Care for the part they had in my healing.

A healthy turnout ... The health fair on Oct. 3 was a success. Many people got flu shots courtesy of Gaffey Nursing, and all the vendors got a lot of traffic and people asking about their companies. Great day!
