From the LCCOA Executive Director

Top of the Morning and a Happy St. Pat’s Day to all our Irish seniors, and to all those who are Irish for one day out of the year. This is truly a great day; the world fills up with fun and laughter and everything is green. LCCOA’s Leprechauns are busy decorating our Center, and you just might find a pot of gold. We will even have an Irish Bingo Breakfast, and Irish lunches will be delivered to over 50 seniors. If you would like to sign up for a lunch, call 815-288-9236 — we’ll be happy to add you to our list.

New Orleans

Fifty-one of our senior friends headed to New Orleans. Our bus was filled with chatter as they played games, received prizes, and just laughed. The group enjoyed every inch of New Orleans, from the French Quarter to the museums, shops, art galleries, cafes, bakeries — and what about those drinks?? Marisa charmed them all with her winning personality and her friendly smile. We are

From the WCSC Director

We are going to have our own type of “March madness” this month. No basketball, but our calendar of special events will be upside down. We are honored to be chosen for a visit by the Director of IDoA, Paula Basta. She will be joining us for our food fundraiser on March 10 when we will be serving creamed chicken over biscuits and mashed potatoes for $7. Celebrity Chef Chris Schueler from Brother Daryl’s will be teaming up with our own Teddy to bring you this meal, plus will supply our biscuits. We will have advance line dancers at 10 a.m. and beginner line dancers at 11 a.m. on that day, then a special Karaoke day in the afternoon. Come dance and sing the day away with us!

We are also moving our Breakfast Club from the last Friday of the month

so sorry we could not take more people on this trip. For those who missed New Orleans, we have more in store for you!

Trips and More Trips

LCCOA is heading to Niagara Falls in June. This trip is booking up fast, so don’t miss out on this one! The falls are amazing in June. Next we are off to Biltmore Estates in August. The estate is beautiful and the Winery — what can I say? Just enjoy! September is right around the corner, and “North to Alaska, North to Russian Zone,” here we come. We have met our target number, but we can take more, so don’t delay, pay your deposit now; those cabins will book up fast, and the price is right. Atlantic City is fun and interesting any time of the year, but the fall is the best time to go — no humidity, and a cool ocean breeze. We will finish up with our 2023 trips in September, and we’ll be back in the swing again in 2024 with a spectacular trip to Jerusalem. Walking in the footsteps of Jesus has to be the highlight of anyone’s life. Whether you are a believer or not, the history, the people, the culture takes your breath away. We encourage you to take this trip; you will be giving yourself the most precious gift of a lifetime.

Puzzles, Puzzles Everywhere

LCCOA has been very fortunate to have received many, many wonderful

to the first Friday of the month to accommodate those wanting to enjoy our Community Meal at noon on March 17, when we will be serving cabbage stew. A big thanks to Walmart, Farmers National Bank, Kunes Auto Group and Gold Rush for sponsoring our community meal — and a huge thanks to the staff from Farmers National Bank for donating $850 toward these meals, on top of the corporate sponsorship.

Immediately after this community meal, from 1-2 p.m., we will have special guests from Economic Growth! I’m very excited as they have grant money for a Home Accessibility Program and will be receiving funding for a roof program in the spring. These programs can help seniors stay in their homes and communities. I’m very passionate about these programs because years ago I used to work on these types of grants. I’m just so glad to see the grants back to our community. If you cannot make it on March 17, they will be here on March 6 for the presentation and on March 20 from noon to 1 p.m. Economic Growth will accept applications and necessary documentation on the 20. There’s no reason to miss out on this opportunity.

puzzles, so we decided to have a contest. Instead of a bake-off, we will have puzzle-off. If you are a puzzle lover, come join us on March 21 at 1 p.m. We are looking for 3 teams of 4 people to compete for prizes, and enjoy an entertaining afternoon. You will have an opportunity to meet new friends and share your love of puzzles.

Writers Workshop

All you blossoming writers, published writer, and those waiting to be published, come join us for lunch, a presentation, and a writers workshop on March 3 at 11 a.m. in the Post House Ballroom (no vaccination is required).

God is good and his people are great!

LCCOA has been very fortunate to have the support of all of the members of the First United Methodist Church of Dixon. This wonderful congregation has supported us financially and spiritually over the years. With their help through their donations, we have been able to pay for furnaces, food, housing, medical supplies and much more. Thank you once again for being there for us. Your generous donation is truly appreciated.

Thank you

We just don’t say this enough: Thank you to all our churches, nonprofit agencies, businesses and our seniors for all you do for LCCOA. The First Presbyte-

I hear you asking what about the Corn Beef and Cabbage — no worries: Golden Meals is providing corned beef and cabbage on March 15. Reservations are necessary prior to March 15. Please stop by the Center to sign up for this meal; it will be by reservation only and we don’t want you to miss out.

Birthday cake in honor of all our March birthday folks will be served at our Center Potluck on March 31 at noon. Bring your favorite dish to pass, and your appetite — I’ll be bringing lasagna.

To add to our March Madness schedule, we will be in Fulton and Morrison a week earlier than normal due to staff scheduling — see you in Fulton and Morrison on March 7. We will have Home Accessibility brochures and contact information. Be sure to stop by and get the information at a satellite location near you.

And “March madness” continues ... Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Kunes, we are adding a second Bingo to our schedule. That’s right, two bingo games a month! Bingo will be on March 8 downstairs in the Dining Area and again March 22 in the Big Room — two chances to win wonderful prizes.

rian Church of Franklin Grove, Whatever it Takes Repair Inc., and Lioness, Lions Club of Dixon have made another donation in support of LCCOA. We are overwhelmed with the love and generosity we have received from Lee County, Ogle, and Whiteside communities.

A Passing of a Friend

Delana Tiekan, has been a caring, loving mother, grandmother and true friend of LCCOA. We have all grown to love her. When the news came of her passing, we were all shocked. She has been our hero. Her fight with cancer has been courageous. She was the true poster person for this horrible disease. Delana battled cancer for years. She fought hard to have time with her family, and especially her grandchildren. Her legacy to them is fight, and fight some more — never give up hope. Our drivers cared so much about this wonderful woman. She will truly be missed. She had become a part of our daily lives. Hope was always in her voice, she never felt sorry for herself. She gave us here at LCCOA an amazing gift — herself. We love you, Delana, you will not be forgotten. Heaven’s garden will be stronger, and it will blossom because you are there. Goodbye old friend — until we meet again.

LCCOA, a place where you belong, a place to call home.

Thanks to our wonderful sponsors, Kunes, Community State Bank and Homestead, for making this all possible.

If you need help with a computer issue, phone or tablet, please remember Whiteside Area Career Center’s IT students are here on Fridays from 10-11:45 a.m., and then again from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.; or Monday thru Thursday from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Stop by to see Neil from SCUG.

Just a friendly reminder: We will be available to fill out your senior freeze applications. Please feel free to walk in on Mondays or make an appointment for the rest of the week. While you are here having your senior freeze application filled out, have an Outreach worker check to see if you’re eligible for the license plate discount. It’s a huge discount — from $151 down to $11 for one per household.

This month is going to be hard to keep up with our schedule, so I suggest you come every day by 10 a.m. and just stay for the fun! Next month there will be more of a rhythm and rhyme to our schedule.
