f you’ve ever golfed, you’ve probably had one of “those days” — bad weather, slow golfers ahead of you on the course, the sun setting too soon, or maybe it’s just a day when you want to hit a few shots but don’t feel like walking the course. PrairieView Golf Club in Byron can help: It has a place where you can have fun golfing year-round in a relaxed environment, in practically any kind of weather, day or night, all STORY while enjoying food and drinks with friends. TEED UP BY PrairieFire Golf and Grill opened at the golf course ER CODY CUTT last June and has become a hit with golfers and EY LL SAUK VA non-golfers alike, thanks in large part to its eight heated MEDIA hitting bays equipped with Toptracer Range technology. The hitting bays allow golfers to send their shots flying in several game modes on virtual courses. Cameras track and trace the ball as it’s hit out on the driving range. Prior to PrairieFire opening, a person would have had to travel more than 50 miles to find that kind of game play. Now, it’s just a chip shot to northeast Ogle County.

PrairieFire General Manager Scott deOliveira said the recently installed high-tech driving bays have been a hit with customers. “It’s a place where golfers and non-golfers alike can come in and enjoy,” he said. “There’s a lot of different things in there that are fun for serious golfers as well as non-golfers and inexperienced golfers.”

CONTINUED from page 5 PrairieFire General Manager Scott deOliveira said the sheltered driving bays don’t just fit experienced golfers to a tee; others love it, too. Some like keeping their skills sharp while others simply enjoy the entertainment aspect of it. Swing a club, smack a ball, and enjoy simulations ranging from long-drive contests, virtual courses, target games, and more; and you can play against other golfers at PrairieFire or others around the world. “It’s a place where golfers and non-golfers alike can come in and enjoy,” deOliveira said. “It’s a virtual golf experience with eight different game modes. There’s a lot of different things in there that are fun for serious golfers as well as non-golfers and inexperienced golfers.” About 75% of people who come are not golfers for the most part, said Todd Tucker, Byron Forest Preserve’s executive director. Hitting bays are rented by the hour, even late at night. Each of the colored targets illuminate and blink when a ball lands on it. The system tracks the balls coming out of the bays with two cameras, one on each side that triangulate, and it tracks everything from a ball’s path, speed, spin, apex, curve, carry, total distance and more. Statistics are shown on a computer screen at each bay; the displays look similar to how televised golf programs break down shots from professionals, with graphics and statistics.

Golfers and guests can watch the action from the indoor viewing areas right off of the driving bays at PrairieFire, or they can grab a seat outside to keep an eye on the action. Customers can also grab a drink or a bite to eat, and watch players’ progress on screens. Alex T. Paschal/ apaschal@shawmedia.com

CONTINUED from page 8 Toptracer also has a kids game, Go Fish, where sea creatures can be captured by swinging shots to targets on a screen. The game can be played individually or in teams of four golfers. Even if it’s too cold out, each bay has overhead heaters and fans as well as fire pits. Each bay also has indoor lounge areas that allow for year-round comfort for guests and groups. “When you walk in, it’s cozy and its comfortable,” deOliveira said. “If you like golf, but you don’t have that 4 hours to commit to on a Saturday or a Sunday — as busy as people’s lives are these days, to be able to come here for 1 or 2 hours, they can still have fun in a relaxed atmosphere. No matter your skill level, you can still get some swings in.” The vision and concept for PrairieFire originated from former general manager and superintendent Matt Henkel, who saw something similar in British Columbia. Henkel and Tucker visited the facility to learn more about it and bring some of its concepts to the Rock River Valley.

CONTINUED from page 9 “The whole concept was based on a need to develop a year-round revenue stream at a golf course in northern Illinois,” deOliveira said. “There was a problem, and we found a solution. The problem was that golf is an expensive sport. To maintain a golf course, it’s expensive. There is a lot that goes into it operationally. “When you only have select months out of the year to operate, it makes it pretty difficult. The idea behind it was to provide an activity that can generate year-round revenue.” Opening during the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic, PrairieFire’s bays had their social distancing limitations when only four people were allowed per bay and indoor seating was prohibited. With restrictions easing up lately, eight people are allowed per bay and limited indoor seating is allowed. Tucker and deOliveira are eager to see just how successful this can be in a typical-year setting. “We had a rough February because of the bitterly cold temps, but January and December we averaged higher numbers than we had during the summer,” Tucker said. “I’ll really love to see TEE TIME what this place does as more people know about the facility, Covid goes away, and we have a full PrairieFire Golf & Grill and PrairieView Golf Club 6734 N. German Church Road, Byron year of business.” HOURS: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through “You can come here for an hour or 2 and not Thursday 9 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday spend 4 or 5 hours on the course,” he added, (minors must be accompanied by parent or “plus it’s more interactive with your friends guardian after 10 p.m.) because on the course you’re more spread out, it’s TEE TIMES for PrairieView Golf Club’s golf a little more quiet, and you have to have some course are from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Go to etiquette. Here, you’re playing music and drinkprairieviewgolf.com for more information. Go to prairiefiregolf.com or call 815-234-4653 to ing a beer.” reserve a tee time at one of Prairie Fire’s bays, Beginners like to take advantage of the games or for more information. that Toptracer offers. Serious golfers tend to gravitate toward playing on the virtual courses, which involves more skill. Wish you could link up at esteemed courses such as Pebble Beach, St. Andrew’s or Beth page Black? Come to Byron and make that happen. While playing, golfers also can enjoy a full bar and grill menu just a few feet away from each bay with shareable foods, sliders, loaded fries, and 10 beers on tap. Reservations can be made online or by phone and are opened up 14 days in advance. Golfers can bring in own clubs, or rent them for a session. Leagues are even played at the bays during the week. Group outings can be arranged there, too. Tucker said that he can see the bays being the future of golf for the northern half of the United States, and they’ll be popping up all over the place before one knows it. The Toptracer system also has an app where users can log their shot data and compare it with other users throughout the world. “PrairieFire is a great place to spend an afternoon or evening with friends and family,” deOliveira said. 12

Bringing the Best to the Sauk Valley Emerald Hill Superintendent has learned from the best BREANNE HUNTER | Sterling Park District Marketing Manager

STERLING — Jake Brooks has experienced plenty of sleepless nights since taking over as the Superintendent of Emerald Hill in 2012. It comes with the territory when tasked with the responsibility of keeping the grounds in pristine condition. “I’ll be sitting at home wondering if the irrigation system is running properly,” Brooks said. “The other night I was out here for a couple hours just watching it run. If I don’t, I won’t be able to sleep.” Emerald Hill is Brooks’ fifth course. The 36-year-old Freeport native has worked on a golf course for as long as he can remember. At the age of 16, he got his first taste of the industry working in the Pro Shop 16

and on the grounds for a pair of courses in Freeport. Following a successful high school golf career, Brooks attended Kishwaukee College on a full-ride golf scholarship. He received his associate degree in Turf Management, and landed his first assistant superintendent gig at Elcona Country Club in Bristol, Indiana. Elcona is one of Indiana’s premiere private courses, and it’s where Brooks truly learned the business. “I had worked on a course my whole life, but nothing quite like that. I learned a lot through that experience at a top private club,” Brooks said. Sauk Valley Media

In 2008, the economy crashed and Brooks was laid off. He found his next assistant superintendent job at Blackthorn Golf Club in South Bend, Indiana. Blackthorn is one of Indiana’s top public courses. He credits Elcona and Blackthorn with making him the Superintendent he is today. He learned from the best, and in 2012 he brought that experience back home to Emerald Hill. Brooks typically employs a staff of 10 part-time seasonal employees at Emerald Hill, and has one full-time mechanic on staff year-round. The majority of his seasonal staff returns year after year, which plays a huge roll in the success of the course. “To keep part-time, seasonal staff around for that long says a lot to me,” Brooks said. “If I had turnover all the time, this course wouldn’t be what it is.” “These guys know what to do, and I don’t have to worry about it. That’s one reason the stripes we mow look so nice. These guys have been here forever, and they’re really good at it. I’m very fortunate to have them.” Trust in his staff allows Brooks to focus his time on implementing top-tier course management tactics. Brooks draws upon his experiences in Indiana to set Emerald Hill apart from the competition. During the heat of the summer, he spends two to three days per week treating the course with fertilizers and fungicides. During the months of June through August, an entire fairway can be lost overnight if not properly cared for. He keeps a regimented treatment schedule, which 17

includes taking environmental conditions into consideration. “Most golf course superintendents try to be as environmentally friendly as possible,” Brooks said. “I try to do everything the right way. I don’t treat the course when it’s windy or ahead of a big rain.” Hand watering is another strategy Brooks has implemented to set Emerald Hill apart. The course has a state-of-the-art irrigation system, but Brooks and his staff go the extra mile by hand watering certain areas, such as ridges, that tend to dry out quicker. Hand watering keeps the water distribution consistent and avoids over-saturating the ground with the irrigation system. During his time at Elcona Country Club, Brooks was introduced to the idea of rolling the greens. He isn’t aware of any other courses in the Sauk Valley area who implement this tactic. Rollers are used on the greens at Emerald Hill three to four times per week to keep them smooth and fast. Brooks says it is an absolute game changer for the course. Brooks and his staff take great pride in the work they do, and dedicate themselves to providing the best golf in the area. Their commitment to excellence is reflected throughout the grounds. “You’re playing a high-end public course for low prices,” Brooks said. “You just can’t beat the price.” “If you put this course in Chicago, you’d get $80 a round for it. Our community has a really nice course that they can play for $20 to $30. You can’t beat that.”
