Health and Wellness Professional Directory 20224 7 Most common dangers of replacing prescription lenses online by Neil Uher II, ABO-AC
Inaccurate PD and Segment Height Measurements
I’ve had plenty of customers call me and ask for the “best” lenses for them, only to be surprised because, for their particular use case, the least expensive option was just fine! You don’t need high index lenses for a -1.00 prescription!
Don’t Compromise on Quality
Othersentirely!willmake their customers enter the prescription information which can be hard to read (duh, it’s written by a doctor!), and it’s easy to mistake things like a plus/minus sign, prescribed prism, and add power, etc. When shopping online, make sure to choose a company that either allows you to upload a picture of your prescription, or includes an option to send a paper copy with your frames.
Paying with Insurance Usually Costs More Surprised? Most people are when they first hear that, but it’s true. By the time you add up your monthly premiums, copays, and the fact that you’re limited to what doctor to see and certain frames and lens options, for most people, it makes more sense (saving cents!) to simply make their purchases outright. In fact, you can usually still get reimbursed by choosing an open-access (or “out of network”) eye-care provider (like UseMyFrame.com).
While working at a small local optical store, I noticed more and more people coming in and wanting to either replace the prescription lenses using their existing frames, or have new lenses made for a frame they purchased online. The place they used to get this service done would no longer do it, and this brought them to our retail store. What really concerned me, was hearing of stories where customers weren’t even allowed to reuse their frame at the place they just bought them from the year before! As someone who not only tries to be frugal myself, I also hate the idea of wasting a perfectly good frame - I thought to take this idea online and thus, UseMyFrame.com was born in May of 2015.I’ve managed labs that completed over 2,000 pairs of glasses daily, I have an advanced certification from the American Board of Opticianry, and have been in this industry since 2007. Here are my thoughts on some of the dangers I see when trying to order replacement prescription lenses online.
Order Wrong Options by Mistake
Terrible Customer Service (no accountability)
Eye doctors don’t always provide this information, so it’s important to ask when needed. At UseMyFrame.com we actually have the ability to determine your pupillary distance from existing prescription lenses; and our lab program can calculate a default segment height based on the measurements of the frame (which are traced to the accuracy of a hundredth of a millimeter!).
I alluded to this earlier in point #1 under the topic of what happens if your frame does break. Who do you talk to if this happens? What will they repair/replace? Is there someone in charge in case things escalate? Will you get stuck in a phone menu (one of my personal pet-peeves)?
Many people are surprised to hear that after your eye exam, you are free to get your glasses made anywhere you’d like. The problem with that is, you’ll pay more for your frames and prescription lenses at the doctor’s office than you will online. Why? Less overhead for one, and some online retailers specialize in making lenses so they get greater discounts on frames, lenses, coatings, etc.
It used to be a trade off when replacing prescription lenses online. If you wanted quality lenses, you would have to pay more at your local optical store; or if you wanted to save money, you could purchase replacement lenses onlinebut you’d have to sacrifice quality in the process. Things have changed drastically since then, and the internet has changed everything. Companies, large and small, are having to adapt to be able to sell the same quality merchandise online as instore, but at reasonable prices, and all from the convenience of their customers’ homes. That’s not to say that all opticals online are equally good, of course not! It’s important to research the companies’ reviews, as well as social channels like Facebook and YouTube. Thank you so much for reading this article, I hope it has benefitted you in some way! Please consider subscribing to our mailing list to learn more and email me at UseMyFrame@gmail.com or shop our lenses at usemyframes.com for more information.
I cannot emphasize enough, of how important it is to choose a company that is easily reached. Address and phone number on each page, a responsive live chat option is a bonus. You Don’t Have to Purchase Prescription Lenses from Your Eye Doctor’s Office
Damaging Frames Most online opticals do not make the lenses in-house. Instead, they take the orders and send the glasses to be made else where; usually, the lab is in another location (town, state, country, etc.). These high traffic labs receive glasses from all over and there’s a definite priority placed onThespeed.main problem with this scenario is there is always the risk of an inexperienced worker breaking the frame while removing the old lenses, or installing the new. This leads to another problem, which I’ll discuss in point #4.
It’s important to select a company with a good reputation and experienced staff that is used to working with different frames (e.g. old and new, cheap and expensive, different manufacturers, etc.). Make sure to know who you’re dealing with and if your glasses will be completed on site or sent to another location.
Most websites are designed by web designers for opticians, and are difficult for non-opticians to understand. They are filled with hard to understand jargon and superfluous options that can easily confuse the customer and lead them to ordering options they don’t want, won’t benefit from, or even ordering the wrong options

I know people who follow local growers on social media and rush to the farmstand as soon as there is corn available so they can get their fix. I don’t blame them; I love it, too! A simple ear of corn is delicious on its own, but why not try it in other ways while it’s fresh and in season? Here are two of my favorite fresh corn recipes. One is a nice cool salad that requires no cooking. The other is a simple soup that’s perfect for those occasional cooler days.

Childhood obesity is a serious medical issue affecting children around the world, but notably in North America. While the issue has been around for decades, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says American children and teenagers have witnessed a significant increase in weight gain since the COVID-19 pandemicYoungerbegan.school-aged children have been among the hardest hit during the pandemic.
A study published in September 2021 found the percentage of obese children and teens increased to 22 percent compared with 19 percent before the pandemic. The CDC looked at the BMI of study subjects between March 1, 2020 and November 30, 2020. One of the study’s authors, Dr. Alyson Goodman of the CDC’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, described the results as “substantial and alarming.”

To reverse course, parents, guardians and educators can focus on helping children become more physically fit. The following are a few ways to do so. n Encourage participation in sports or other physical activities. Sports practices, games, competitions, and other activities may keep children moving for an hour or more several days per week. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics states that only 25 percent of children get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day. Emphasize a fun activity with a focus on movement that produces shortness of breath, body warmth and sweat. These are indicators that the heart rate is really pumping.
n Use exercise as a reward and not a punishment. Make exercise something kids can look forward to. Reward a job well done on a test with extra time biking with friends or a hiking trip to a scenic national park,. Kids will be begin to associate exercise with fun.
n Limit screen time. Children may be inclined to entertain themselves by heading for the television, mobile phone or tablet first, especially after a year-plus of being stuck indoors. But parents can make a concerted effort to limit kids’ screen time in favor of more physically challenging pursuits.
n Teach healthy eating habits. A Harris Poll survey conducted on behalf of the American Psychological Association found that 61 percent of respondents age 18 and older reported a median weight gain of 15 pounds during the pandemic. Teach children that weight loss is accomplished when more calories are burned than consumed. Pay attention to portion sizes and explain how beverages like fruit juices can be sneaky sources of extra calories.Children may need a little extra help getting fit, especially if they gained weight during the pandemic. Teaching healthy habits now can help kids enjoy healthy futures.

Grilling is summertimea tradition, but health- conscious grillmasters may want to marinate their meats before cooking them over an open flame. Heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) are compounds that can form when meats are cooked over an open flame.
Cool KeepingWhileDown Costs
HAAs are suspected carcinogens, but a 2008 study published in the Journal of Food Science found that, with a few exceptions, spice-containing marinades inhibited the formation of heterocyclic amines, thus providing reduced exposure to some of the carcinogens formed during grilling.

Women who love horseradish may be getting more than a little extra kick when adding the condiment to their favorite foods or even their brunch-time Bloody Marys. Though it may not be a typical veggie, horseradish is a cruciferous vegetable. That’s good news for women horseradish lovers, as researchers at the University of Western Australia’s School of Medical and Health Sciences found that women who ate more cruciferous vegetables had healthier carotid arteries than those who ate less vegetables.
A joint study from the Global Coalition on Aging and the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies found that women who vacation at least twice a year have a lower risk for heart attack than those who travel once every six years. The study also found that men who do not take annual vacations are at a significantly higher risk of death (20 percent) and heart disease (30 percent) than those who take time to get away each year. During hot days, few things are as welcoming as an air conditioned room. If that comfort comes at a steep cost when the monthly energy bill comes due, individuals might want to move their thermostats, especially if they’re located next to a large appliance. According to the Performance Building Institute, thermostats are sensitive to heat. Many large appliances generate enough heat to trick a thermostat into thinking a home or room is warmer than it actually is. Moving thermostats away from large appliances could erase the need for homeowners to choose between cost and comfort when cooling their homes this summer

These first two numbers are what mostly makes us the overall width of the frame, and is referred to as the, “Frame PD”. In our example, we have a frame PD of 68 millimeters (49 + 19). So other frames that have a similar frame PD will have about the same width. This is also helpful when selecting frames for the first time - especially for strong prescriptions - because if there’s a large difference between the frame PD and the patients’ PD, the lenses will be even thicker then when they are closer together. I’ll explain this more in another article, but suffice it to say to try and look for a frame with a frame PD within 10 millimeters of your own PD, especially if you have a strong prescription. ...but suffice it to say to try and look for a frame with a frame PD within 10 millimeters of your own PD, especially if you have a strong prescription.
WHAT THE NUMBERS MEAN At one time or another, you’ve probably noticed the small numbers printed on the inside of your frame. They are usually printed on the inside of one of the arms or the bridge (the part that goes over the nose), and sometimes they are too small to see without your glasses on!
In the photo above, we are given the model number of this particular Eddie Bauer frame, “EB32009” and the “BK” in the middle stands for “Black”. This is already very helpful because if I needed to replace this frame or wanted to shop around for the best price, this is number needed to find them in searches. The next three sets of numbers, “49, 20, and 140” are our size reference. These are the numbers to look up to get an idea of the size of the frame you have, or the size to compare when shopping around.
THE HORIZONTAL MEASUREMENT
THE CORRECT FRAME SIZE
The first number, “49” means each lens is about 49 millimeters measured horizontally; like in the picture below: I removed the lens from the frame and placed it on this ruler and you can see that it measures about 49 millimeters. I say “about” because these are actually values assigned to the frame to make organizing them easier. This lens might actually be 49.58 millimeters, but it’s easier to sort and organize frames by “49”, and the other measurements are the same way.
THE BRIDGE MEASUREMENT
THAT’S ALL THERE IS TO IT! You see? That’s not too difficult after all! Now you can shop mens frames and womens frames with confidence! This is a simple way to get an idea of your ideal frame. Try on a frame that’s a little small? Look for one with a larger frame PD! If it fits a little too big, try one with a smaller frame PD. How about the temples that go along side your head? Too long or too short? Usually just adding 5 to 10 millimeters either way will make all the difference in the world. What about if the frame measurements have worn off, or just can’t find them? Well at least now you know how to come up with the measurements yourself - happy shopping! Just because glasses look nice, Doesn’t mean they will fit nice.
TEMPLE LENGTH
104 East 3rd Street Rock Falls, IL 815-677-4398
The third number listed is what’s properly referred to as the, “Temple length;” or “arm length” as most people call it. This includes the entire length of the arm from where it attaches to the front of the frame, to the end of the tip that curves around the ear (measured in millimeters also). This frame has a temple length of 140 millimeters: It’s important to note that this is the length before the arm is bent, and sometimes it can appear shorter, especially if there’s a strong bend.
The second number, “19” is what’s called the “Bridge” of the frame, the part of the frame that attaches each lens to another and sits just above our nose, like a little bridge. In the photo below, you’ll see that it appears to measure 20 millimeters, and I’ll explain why below: The lens isn’t flush with the inside of the frame otherwise it would pop out all of the time, so the frame is grooved and the lenses are made with what’s called a, “bevel” which brings the edge of the lens to a point making it fit perfectly into the groove of the frame and securely holding it in place. This adds to the size of the lens because part of the lens is actually inside the frame, so even though there appears to be a 20 millimeter space from lens to lens (measured from the closest points inside the frame), its actually about half a millimeter closer on each side. This is why it’s customary for Opticians to subtract 1 millimeter from the bridge size (“DBL”) when measuring frames for customers.
Many of us have seen a frame that we though would look nice on us, but the dealbreaker came when we actually tried it on. Too narrow, too wide, maybe the arms are too long or too short. Just because glasses look nice, doesn't mean they will fit nice. If only there were an easier way... well there is! On every pair of glasses, there's numbers that will actually act as a guide as to their size. This of course, doesn't guarantee a perfect fit every time, just like having a pair of shoes that are a certain size in one brand doesn't necessarily mean another pair of shoes from a different company, but the same size won't guarantee an exact match; but it at least can act as a guide so you're not starting from scratch each time.

Yet feet rank lowest on the list of body parts and functions that Americans consider important to their health, the APMA study shows.
Health and Wellness Professional Directory 202212
If our teeth ache, most of us will head quickly to the dentist for treatment. But if your feet hurt, do you just chalk up the pain as a discomfort of modern life? Sadly, most of us do. Most Americans say they have foot pain at least some of the time, and more of us have pain in our feet than in any other part of our bodies we consider vital to health, such as skin, teeth, or even the heart, according to a 2012 survey by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA).
Additionally, many Americans don’t seek foot care from a podiatrist—a doctor specially trained to care for feet. At the KSB Foot & Ankle center we believe foot health directly affects the quality of our lives. “When our feet are healthy, feeling good, and working well, they can enable us to go about our normal routines. But injured, ill, or just plain sore feet can undermine the foundation of our good health,” says Brandon Gumbiner, DPM. Feet are often indicators of our overall health; signs of arthritis, diabetes, nerve, and circulatory problems can all be detected in the feet. People suffering from foot pain are also more likely to suffer from a variety of other health issues, including back, knee, and joint pain, as well as weight and heart problems.
So how do you know if your foot pain is just annoying, or serious enough to merit a visit to a podiatrist? “Persistent pain or sudden severe pain should definitely raise warning bells,” says Kyle Swanson, DPM. Nathan Mauren, DPM adds that, “Beyond that, keep in mind that there are many sources of foot pain, and many foot ailments that can be diagnosed and managed best by a podiatrist.” These conditions can include:
• arthritis; • athlete’s foot;
• foot and ankle deformities
Cholesterol: Men with no known risk factors fo coronary heart disease are urged to get annual cholesterol screenings beginning at age 35. Men with known risk factors should begin receiving annual screenings at age 20. More frequent screenings might be necessary for individuals with diabetes, kidney problems or heart disease.
• Infectious disease: The USNLM urges all individuals, including healthy young men, to be tested for hepatitis C at leastleast betweenoncethe ages of 18 and 79. Doctors also may recommend additional screenings for sexually active young men, who may be tested for syphilis, chlamydia, HIV, and other infections.
• Blood pressure: The United States Department of Health and Human Services and the National Institutes of Health urge men between the ages of 18 and 39 to have their blood pressure checked at least once every two years. Many men already have their blood pressure checked during annual wellness visits, which all men should schedule regardless of their fitness levels and overall health. Men with preexisting conditions, including diabetes, heart disease and kidney problems, may need more frequent blood pressure screenings. In addition, annual screenings are recommended if the top number is between 120 and 139 and/or the lower number is between 80 and 89.

For example, the U.S. National Library of Medicine notes that a BMI over 25 is considered overweight, which is a risk factor for diabetes. Men who fall into this category should be screened for diabetes starting at age 35 (the USNLM urges Asian American men to be screened if their BMI exceeds 23). Providers also may test men’s blood sugar levels if their blood pressure is 130/80 or higher and/or if they have a first degree relative with diabetes or a history of heart disease.
• Testicular cancer: The National Cancer Institute reports that testicular cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men between the ages of 15 and 34. The USNLM advises against testicular self-exams, so young men should discuss testicular cancer screenings with their physicians, especially if they notice any changes in the size or shape of their testicles.
• Dental checkup: Men are encouraged to visit the dentist twice a year for an exam and cleaning. Dentists can determine if more frequent visits are necessary.Preventive health care is vital for everyone, including men between the ages of 18 and 39.

Preventive health care is a multifaceted approach to a healthy lifestyle that incorporates various strategies to reduce risk for illness and disease. Screenings are a vital component of preventive care, even for young men. Regardless of how fit a young man is or how healthy he feels, these screenings should be part of health care regimens for all men between the ages of 18 and 39.

4. Coronary artery disease: Heart & Stroke notes that coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common form of heart disease. CAD occurs when one or more of the coronary arteries narrows or becomes blocked. CAD causes damage or disease to major blood vessels that supply blood, oxygen and nutrients to the heart. Certain risk factors for CAD, such as age, are beyond individuals’ control. However, many risk factors are within a person’s control. Individuals can speak to their physicians about how to maintain a healthy blood pressure and a healthy weight, limit stress, and reduce their cholesterol, all of which can lower risk for CAD. Heart disease claims the lives of millions of people each year. The sheer volume of deaths caused by heart disease each year suggest there’s little people can do to avoid it. However, the Canadian organization Heart & Stroke notes that healthy behaviors like eating a heart-healthy diet and exercising regularly can help individuals delay the onset of heart disease by as much as 14 years. Education is another valuable asset in the fight against heart disease. Individuals who are aware of common heart illnesses can discuss them with their physicians and take measures to reduce their risk.

1. Angina: Heart & Stroke notes that angina is another word for chest pain. The discomfort associated with angina, which can feel like squeezing, suffocating or burning, is caused by a temporary disruption in the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart. Though angina symptoms typically do not last long, they are considered warning signs for heart attack and should be discussed with a physician immediately after they appear.
2. Atherosclerosis: Atherosclerosis is characterized by the buildup of plaque on the interior wall of an artery. That buildup makes the walls of the artery thick and hard, thus restricting the flow of blood, and can potentially contribute to a blockage. The experts at Johns Hopkins Medicine note that risk factors for atherosclerosis include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, and a poor diet that includes lots of saturated fats. Atherosclerosis can cause angina, though many individuals with the condition experience no symptoms until it has reached an advanced stage. Blockages in the leg may cause cramping when exercising or walking, while those in the arteries of the heart can cause heart attack. Blockages that develop in the brain can cause stroke.
3. Cardiomyopathy: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that cardiomyopathy often goes undiagnosed, making it hard to determine just how common the condition is. But the CDC estimates that as many as one in 500 adults have cardiomyopathy. Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle that makes it harder for the heart to pump oxygen-rich blood to the body at optimal capacity. Heart & Stroke notes that cardiomyopathy can lead to heart failure. Early stages of cardiomyopathy may not produce any symptoms, but as the disease gets worse individuals may experience fainting, irregular or rapid heartbeats, lightheadedness, and swelling of the hands and feet, among other things.

Reaching one’s fiftieth birthday in optimal health is an accomplishment to be proud of. The hard work required to be healthy in midlife includes adhering to a nutritious diet and exercising regularly. Once individuals cross the threshold and enter their 50s, they can look to some additional strategies to maintain their physical and mental well-being.
What to do about wellness after 50
• Make an effort to improve balance. Various factors contribute to a decline in balance as adults age. For example, a decline in muscle mass that begins when people are in their 30s is a normal part of aging. Balance exercises can be a valuable component of a fitness regimen that help individuals reduce their risk for falling as they advance through their 50s and into their 60s and 70s.
• Embrace your inner socialite. Socialization is important for people of all ages, including individuals 50 and over. A 2017 study from researchers at Michigan State found that valuing friendships was a strong predictor of health and happiness among older adults. Opportunities to socialize with friends may increase as people navigate their 50s and children move out or become more independent.
• Prioritize learning. Whether it’s taking music lessons, going back to school or mastering a new hobby, learning has a profound effect on aging brains. For example, a 2013 study published in the journal Psychological Science found that memory function is improved by engagement in demanding everyday tasks. That study reported that people who learned new skills experienced greater memory improvement than people who only socialized or participated in activities that were not as cognitively engaging.
• Get a pet. Many people 50 and older qualify as “empty nesters,” a term applied to adults whose children have grown up and moved out of their homes. Some empty nesters experience a phenomenon known as “empty nest syndrome,” which the Mayo Clinic notes can be marked by feelings of sadness or loss. Pets can help people over 50 with no children at home overcome feelings linked to empty nest syndrome. Pets also can ensure individuals over 50 stay physically active.

Sufficient sleep and chronic disease
The Mayo Clinic notes that the immune system releases proteins called cytokines during sleep. The release of certain cytokines needs to increase when individuals are experiencing infections or inflammation, which is one reason why doctors often recommend extra sleep to sick patients. Without adequate sleep, the immune system may not produce enough cytokines, and that can increase the frequency with which individuals get sick.
The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health reports there is mounting evidence to suggest a link between insufficient sleep and weight gain and obesity. Studies exploring this potential link have been conducted for decades and have examined how sleep affects people of all ages and genders. At the 2006 American Thoracic Society International Conference, researchers who had tracked women’s sleep habits for 16 years found that those who slept just six hours per night were 12 percent more likely to experience major weight gain than women who slept seven hours per night.
Sleep is not often mentioned alongside diet and exercise as a vital component of overall health. But a good night’s rest is no less vital to long-term health than a healthy diet and physical activity.
Sufficient sleep and weight gain
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that insufficient sleep has been linked to the development and management of various chronic diseases. For example, the CDC indicates that insufficient sleep has been linked to an increased risk for type 2 diabetes.
Sleep is an often unsung hero of overall health. Diet and exercise get their fair share of glory, but without a good night’s rest, even the most physically active, nutrition-conscious individuals are vulnerable to a host of ailments and illnesses.According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, most adults need seven or more hours of sleep on a regular schedule each night. Athletes may even benefit from additional sleep. Improved athletic performance is not the only way that sufficient sleep benefits the human body. Sufficient sleep and the immune system
What sufficient sleep does for the human body
• Make daily life easier: Individuals may not realize it, but their cores play a vital role in performing a great number of daily tasks. Core muscles are activated when doing everything from taking out the trash to getting dressed. If those muscles are weak, the cumulative effect of weaknessthatcan add up and contribute to aches, pains and other health problems. Strong core muscles make daily tasks easier and less taxing on the body, providing both short- and longterm benefits.
• Build a strong, healthy back: Lower back pain can be debilitating, but core exercises strengthen muscles in the core, including those in the back. The Mayo Clinic notes that core exercises train muscles in the pelvis, lower back, hips, and abdomen to work together, creating greater balance and stability and contributing to a healthy back.
Core exercises are a vital component of a well-rounded workout. Core exercises can help individuals build sculpted abdominal muscles, and while that’s a goal for many core devotees, the benefits of core exercises extend well beyond the cosmetic.

Fitness professionals recognize the importance of a well-balanced workout. A routine that includes an assortment of strength and cardiovascular exercises is the recipe for a fit and healthy body.
• Become a better athlete: Core training has long been a key component of professional athletes’ exercise regimens, and it’s just as beneficial to amateur athletes as well. The Harvard Medical School notes that a strong core powers a host of athletic activities, including golf, tennis, cycling, running, swimming, and team sports like baseball and volleyball. A strong core also benefits outdoor enthusiasts who love to kayak and hike difficult terrain.
The BENEFITS of building a strong core
• Sculpt abdominals: The cosmetic benefits of building a strong core should not be overlooked, as individuals might gain additional motivation to keep exercising and eating right when they see desirable results in the mirror. Core exercises strengthen and sculpt abdominal muscles, creating a win-win situation for anyone who wants to get healthy and look good doing it.
