Knights of Columbus. Alzheimer’s Association. Safe Passage. Happy Tails Humane Society. Buddy Bags of Dixon The breadth and depth of the services these and dozens of other charitable organizations provide to the Sauk Valley’s most vulnerable is at the same time astonishing, and humbling. How fortunate we are to have so many devoted, dedicated agencies and individuals willing to work so hard to care for us all. And how fortunate we are to have so many businesses willing to open their pocketbooks, roll up their sleeves and donate time, materials, and advertising dollars to support those endeavors. Welcome to our special edition of Sauk Valley’s Charity of Choice, a publication that celebrates local nonprofits service groups, and the businesses that stand behind them. You may be familiar with some of them. Some may be new to you. We hope you read about them all, are inspired by their missions, and lend your support to them, and to the businesses that sponsored each writeup of their Charity of Choice.

CEO Program - Class of 2022 One of the newest programs at Whiteside Area Career Center is the CEO Program; Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities. In its ninth year, the program has grown to 33 students and two sections, and East and West location. Nationally, there are over 50 CEO classes located in 7 different states and are overseen by Midland Institute for Entrepreneurship. (midlandinstitute.com) Now that you’ve learned a few statistics, here is what the current class has to say about the program after only about a week of class. In small teams they completed 2 sentences: So far in CEO we… • met new people • learned team building • working on communication • learned about a bamboo business • found out that not everything learned applies right now, some will be helpful in the future • written 2 journals • gone on 2 tours • met the other class • learned about the mentor program • got donuts! • problem-solved as a group • put a golf ball in a bucket • Hayden ate cow feed • have a list of assets • learned about first impressions • successfully used GPS

• have seen bad photos of ourselves • practiced independence • I’ve begun constructing my business plan • made new friends • taken the DISC assessment • got lost • learned not everything needs to be set in stone • met Sean Sandrock and other speakers • climbed a combine The next sentence: What I hope for in CEO is to… • meet people who will help build my future career • create a successful business • expand network • have a successful tradeshow • build friendships • get to know business owners • build confidence

• learn how to present ideas • eat more donuts • find a great mentor • take more business tours • not get lost again • expand my business knowledge • learn finance • get a better understanding of what success is • create new, lasting bonds • become more coordinated in business situations • work on communication skills • have a successful class business • get more sociable and less shy • meet important people • take more opportunities • receive more advice • better at speaking to crowds

These are interesting and exciting responses about what is learned in a short time and what is hoped for! Looks like CEO has a busy year ahead. For more information, facilitators Emily Zimmerman and Le Hartman can be reached at emily.j.zimmerman@svcc.edu and lhartman@wacc.cc

Over the past several years, the Dixon Police Department’s Charitable

Association has funded numerous community programs which include Shop with a Cop, Clothes for Kids, Holiday Food Baskets and Cops & Bobbers. The

programs are geared towards strengthening relationships between the members

of the police department and the community they serve. The programs give people from the community a chance to interact with the officers outside the

normal day-to-day police duties. These programs were established to help less fortunate families through difficult financial and emotional times.

Those wanting to contribute to the Charitable Association should please reach out to the department at (815)288-4411.

Buddy Bags of Dixon is a community collaborative effort, supported by several area churches and local organizations. Our goal is to provide food to Dixon school children who do not have enough food to eat at home on weekends. The Dixon Illinois Elementary District has over 1,200 students receiving free or reduced meals in the K-8th grades. Many school children qualify for subsidized lunch at school, but go hungry on the weekends because they don’t have enough food at home. The Buddy Bags task force formed in an effort to combat hunger on behalf of the at risk youth in our community. We are located at St. Paul Lutheran Church, for use of its not-for-profit status and ample storage and assembly space.

If you would like to get involved we welcome you to contact us with your interest. buddybagsofdixon@yahoo.com www.facebook.com/buddybagsofdixon

AMBOY EDUCATION FOUNDATION

Sauk Valley Media • September 18, 2019

The Amboy Education Foundation (AEF) is a Not-forProfit entity designed to supplement the education of the students of Amboy by funding items the school district is unable to support. Each of the last ten years the AEF has donated over $30,000 annually to the schools to support such activities as advanced reading and math program, library books and supplies, computers, projectors, musical instruments and equipment, science equipment, etc. It is our desire to promote a well rounded educational experience for the students of Amboy by supporting these many areas of interest and need. Watch for our fundraisers throughout the year!

The Amboy Education Foundation enjoyed another successful year of fundraising. We have also been grateful recipients of contributions from the United Way of Lee County, generous alumni and memorials on behalf of individuals that held the students of Amboy and their schools near and dear to their hearts. As a result, we were able to allocate $27,000 to the Amboy School District for the 2020-21 school year. This level of support to the schools is only possible through the generosity of our sponsors and all that participate in our events.

New members are always welcome! If you have any questions, please contact Mark Becker at (815) 857-2586. HISTORY & HERITAGE: Founded on the principles of charity, unity and fraternity, the Knights of Columbus was established in 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Conn., and a group of parishioners. Their intent? To bring financial aid and assistance to the sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Today, Father McGivney is now known as Blessed Father Michael McGivney. DONATIONS: One hundred percent of your donation goes directly to support the Knights of Columbus charitable cause of your choice. All fees and expenses associated with Knights of Columbus Charities, such as operating and administration costs, are covered by the Knights of Columbus. Whatever cause you contribute to — providing a child the gift of warmth, advocating for a culture of life, giving persecuted religious minorities food and medical care or helping rebuild after natural disasters — every penny you donate goes directly to your chosen charity. Together, we will make a difference. This is our path and our faith leads the way. PROGRAMS: Special Olympics Leave No Neighbor Behind Fund (people affected by COVID-19) The Virgil C. and Ann L. 15 We are reaching out to you today because our community needs our help. The impact of coronavirus is unfathomable. Many families, senior citizens, people with disabilities and children depend on our support to avoid hunger during this challenging time. This is America – the greatest agricultural nation in the world. Now, more than ever, we must work together to reduce the suffering our communities face in the weeks ahead. Right now, food banks across the country face drastic reductions in their donations. With limited supplies available, food providers are battling the impact of substantial cuts in traditional donations from grocery stores and restaurants. Additionally, changes in the food pantry operations now require boxes, gas, and additional resources. With the thousands of Americans currently out of work -- many will be forced to tap into these food banks for essentials. That means there is a crucial need for financial support. Many people in our communities are employed in positions where they are unable to work remotely. They face limited paid time off and cannot afford high costs associated with seeing a doctor or going to the hospital. Hours are being cut and layoffs are growing as businesses close. With school closures impacting thousands of young people across the region, there is a growing need to provide more meals for children. So, what can we do? In an effort to raise money for food banks desperate for assistance, The Sterling Rail is now accepting grain donations. The money raised from these donations will be immediately reallocated to food banks within the Sauk Valley and Northern Illinois region. Donations of any bushel size will go any extraordinary length in making sure every member of our community can withstand the weight of this crisis. One of the greatest feelings is knowing we can make a difference. We all take pride in our ability as farmers to feed this country and our communities. Right now, they need our help like never before. Please, donate what you can. Everything little bit matters! Thank you for your kindness!

Are you or someone you know suffering from an addiction and in need of help? If you answered yes, a revolutionary new program being offered in Lee and Whiteside Counties can help. An initiative started by the Dixon Police Department and the Lee County Sheriff’s Department, The Safe Passage Initiative is a deflection program that was started to help persons with an substance use disorders. Here’s how it works. People who realize they need help can go to one of the participating law enforcement agencies in Lee and Whiteside Counties, ask for help with their drug addiction, turn in their drugs (without fear of being arrested) and be placed into a treatment facility, usually within 24 hours. Once initial paperwork is completed, persons will be paired with a volunteer who will guide them through the process. Safe Passage is partnered with treatment centers throughout Illinois and the Midwest.

It is remarkable the good that just one volunteer can do for a person, a family, or even a whole community. The rewards of volunteering can be immense for both the volunteer and for those on the receiving end. Your donation of time, talents and hard work given with a kind-hearted attitude can produce amazing results. This volunteer support enables us to utilize our funding in Whiteside County to provide services that are designed to meet the needs of the less fortunate in our community. This support is invaluable. The Salvation Army offers volunteer opportunities for individuals as well as opportunities for group projects. Independent volunteering is a great way to meet new people while helping others, and group projects serve as wonderful team-building activities for established groups or clubs. Those who want to help but who are not able to participate as a volunteer can still help in other ways. For example, if you are not able to participate as a volunteer, why not consider collecting items to donate to one of our many programs? A little help makes a big difference!

Thank you Sauk Valley for making our 2020 Christmas campaign kettles and mail appeal so successful. We exceeded our goal of $121,000 in Whiteside County and $15,000 in Lee County.
