VETERANS NEWS| BOOKS FOR SERVICE MEMBERS
Service members will be honored this Veterans Day weekend. All events are on Sunday unless otherwise noted: Amboy: Amboy American Legion program, 10 a.m. Monday in the Amboy High School gym, 11 E. Hawley St. Amboy American Legion Cmdr. Jack Mead will speak. A dinner for veterans and their spouses begins at 6 p.m. at Long Branch Saloon, 55 Southeast Ave. Army National Guard member Joshua Wittenauer will speak. Call 815857-3486 for more information.
Dixon: On Veterans Day, ceremonies begin at 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, 668 Memorial Parkway. Sgt. Eden Latham with the 1644th Army National Guard Transportation Unit will speak. A color guard will be present, and there will be a rifle salute and taps. American Legion Post 12, 1120 W. First St., will host an open house and luncheon at noon. Bring a dish to pass. VFW Post 540 will have an open house and serve a free lunch at noon at 1560 state Route 38. SALUTE continued on A54

Chadwick: A service begins at 8:15 a.m. Monday at Chadwick Middle School, 15 E. School St. Milledgeville American Legion Cmdr. Lee Gibbs will speak, the Legion color guard will be on hand and the middle school band and chorus will perform. Afterward, Legion members will teach fourth- and fifth-graders how to fold flags.

Lanark: The Lanark Legion and VFW’s annual supper for veterans and their spouses begins at 6 p.m. today at the Heritage Center, 106 S. Broad St. Meat, vegetables, and beverages will be provided; bring a salad or dessert to pass and your own table service. Andrew Chesney, candidate for 89th District state representative, will speak, and the Eastland Junior-Senior High School Jazz Band will perform. Eastland Elementary School will host a breakfast for veterans, their spouses, and spouses of deceased veterans at 7:30 a.m. Monday at the school, 601 S. Chestnut St., Shannon. Call 815-864-2300 to make reservations. A Veterans Day assembly and ceremony follows at 8:30 a.m. Students will perform several patriotic music selections. Jerry Oleson of Byron, with American Legion Post 209, will speak. Morrison: American Legion Post 328’s ceremony begins at 11 a.m. at Grove Hill Cemetery, 400 E. A potluck meal will be served from noon to 2 p.m. at the VFW Post, 1310 W. Washington St. Prophetstown: Elementary students and high school choir members will sing, and students will read poems at 10 a.m. Monday at Prophetstown Elementary School, 301 W. Third St. At 2:30 p.m. songs will be sung by the choir and students will read poems at Prophetstown High School, 310 W. Riverside Drive. Prophetstown American Legion members will present the colors at both programs. Rock Falls: American Legion Post 902 will have a ceremony with a rifle salute at 10:15 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park (Triangle Park), at Fifth Avenue and Fifth Street. Legionnaires will visit area nursing homes in the afternoon. Savanna: VFW Post 2223’s service begins at 1 p.m. at Savanna Museum and Cultural Center, 406 Main St. Post 2223 members and Savanna American Legion Post 148 Honor Guard will present the colors. The Men of Calvary will perform the national anthem. and Iraq War veteran Michael Stretton will be the
keynote speaker. VFW Cmdr. Mike Raleigh and Legion Cmdr. Paul Mayer will place a wreath. A rifle salute will take place, and taps will be played. Sterling: Sterling American Legion Post 296’s program begins at 1 p.m. at Grandon Civic Center on Fourth Street. In case of bad weather, the program will be in Centennial Auditorium at Sterling High School, 1608 Fourth Ave. The Legion Color Guard will post the colors, and the Newman Central Catholic High School choir will sing the national anthem, “God Bless the USA” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” The Civil Air Patrol will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Army Cmdr. Sgt. Maj. Brian D. Heffernan will be the keynote speaker. Legion member Mike Wolber will introduce World War I re-enactor Michael Bicksler. The color guard will present an honor salute and play taps. Tampico: American Legion Post 574’s Bells of Peace program, in which church bells are rung 21 times to commemorate the end of World War I and in remembrance of all veterans, begins at 11 a.m. Legion Cmdr. John Taets will ring his old farm bell at 11 a.m. at Reagan Park, at Main and Glassburn streets, and a rifle salute, prayer and color guard presentation will follow.

STERLING – Local Verizon cellular phone stores will hold a free veterans appreciation event on Veterans Day. The Sterling store at 4204 E. Lincolnway, and the Rock Falls site at 107 First Ave., will open a half-hour early to serve only veterans and their families, from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Both stores will be open until 6 p.m. Employees will answer questions about service contracts and promotions, sign active service members up for discounts, and give service pins to veterans. Honor Flight is a national nonprofit network with 131 hubs in 45 states, including Honor Flight of the Quad Cities, which serves veterans within a 75-mile radius. The program sends WWII, Korea and Vietnam veterans on a 1-day, jampacked trip to D.C., to explore all the war memorials and other attractions, while giving them the star treatment. All veterans are not only welcome, but deserving – even those who did not see combat. The flights, all funded by donations, are free to all veterans, who are accompanied by volunteer guardians who pay their own way and help the veterans throughout the day. Whiteside County Honor Flight launched in summer 2009, and the Lee County Honor Flight, chapter a year later. The local chapters are affiliates of Honor Flight of the Quad Cities, and the

Priority is given to WWII and Korean War veterans, and to those who are terminally ill. By the time the plane, bus, fuel and other fees are taken into account, each flight costs about $80,000.
