WEEK IN REVIEW Sycamore mayor to pick acting city manager By KATIE FINLON
kfinlon@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – An acting Sycamore city manager will soon be appointed by the mayor and City Council later this month after the current city manager’s near departure. Maggie Peck, human and administrative resources director for the city of Sycamore, said city officials are looking to wait for a new mayor to take his seat following the April 6 consolidated election, since the city potentially could have new aldermen by then as well. She said the plan so far is for the new council to start the new permanent city manager selection process after May 1. “What that looks like, there is some
uncertainty,” Peck said about specific timelines beyond the May 1 date. In the meantime, Peck said, Sycamore Mayor Curt Lang will recommend appointing an acting city manager at the next City Council meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 15. She said Lang already has reviewed contenders for the acting city manager position and has someone selected already, although she and Lang declined comment to name the anticipated appointee on Feb. 1. The update comes after the DeKalb County Board officially voted during its Jan. 20 meeting to appoint Sycamore City Manager Brian Gregory as the next county administrator starting March 1. That followed Gregory being named the recommended appointment for the job during the county’s Jan. 13 executive
committee meeting. Gary Hanson, who retired as the county’s administrator and is serving as interim, retired Dec. 31 after 37 years of service with the county, which included him working as the county’s finance director and later the county’s administrator, according to county documents. In November, the County Board unanimously approved keeping Hanson on board on an interim basis between his retirement date and the starting date of his successor with a pay rate of $92.20 per hour. Sycamore City Council members and city staff have not yet explicitly addressed the next steps in filling the city manager position in an interim or permanent basis before March 1 during any open meetings thus far.
Luebke to run as write-in for township supervisor By KELSEY RETTKE
krettke@shawmedia.com DEKALB TOWNSHIP – Democrat Jim Luebke will run as a write-in candidate for the April 6 race for DeKalb Township supervisor after a failed battle to get on the ballot. Luebke’s announcement came Jan. 29 after an unsuccessful virtual court hearing in front of DeKalb County Judge Bradley Waller to appeal DeKalb Township Clerk Kevin Flavin’s decision to not certify his petition for the supervisor ballot after a paperwork error led to controversy in the township clerk’s office. Longtime Township Clerk Lynn Kunde resigned mid-January after serving in the role since 2005 after she refused to make a decision on whether or not to certify his ballot upon

realizing he’d neglected to turn in a receipt for his Statement of Economic Interest, a requirement needed to certify ballots. In response, Luebke filed a lawsuit against the township, Flavin and Township Supervisor Nancy Teboda alleging unfair treatment in light of what his attorney, Anna Wilhelmi, argued was a lack of notification that something was missing during the objection period for ballot certification. “Yesterday I went to court seeking justice, not only for myself but for the voters of DeKalb Township, in the end we were met with only the cold injustice of a rigid legal process,” Luebke said Jan. 29 in a statement. “Rather than begin a costly appeal to a higher court, I will take my appeal directly to the voters of DeKalb Township, the ultimate power in our elec-

toral system. The voters deserve a fair election with a choice for DeKalb Township supervisor, I am calling on them to make their voices heard.” Although he’d ruled it out initially in lieu of an attempt to get his name officially on the township April 6 consolidated election ballot, Luebke confirmed Jan. 29 he’ll still seek office as a write-in candidate, meaning his name will not appear on the ballot, but voters wishing to place their bets on him will still be able to vote for him by writing his name, spelled correctly, in the write-in spot in April. Luebke’s bid for office will remain unofficially contested, as Mary Hess, a current township trustee, will also seek the role. Her candidacy was certified by the township clerk’s office, confirmed township attorney Brad Stewart.

OC Creative named chamber Business of the Year By KATRINA J.E. MILTON kmilton@shawmedia.com
DeKALB – Brian Oster credits the community as the deciding factor that led to him buying a business in DeKalb five years ago. Oster is the creative director and president of OC Creative, an advertising agency that specializes in video production, website design and branding. On Feb. 4, OC Creative was named the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce’s 2020 Business of the Year. “This is the best community I’ve ever been a part of, and … we’re committed to the community,” Oster said. The announcement came during the annual meeting of the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce. During the virtual event, the recipients of the Nonprofit Organization Award and the Ambassador of the Year Award also were announced. After OC Creative was announced as this year’s award recipient, Oster thanked his wife, Amy, who is the business’ vice president, and his hardworking staff of nine. He described his initial reaction of winning the award as “being humble and honored, excited to continue to give back and be involved in the community.” “Let’s keep turning up the needle

Let’s see what we can do together. ... There’s so much diversity and leadership in the community. I’m excited for us as a business because we won the award, but I’m more excited to see where we as a community go in the future.” The Business of the Year Award is given to a business that has had exceptional involvement with the DeKalb

Chamber and the community. Other nominees included 94.9 WDKB Midwest Family Broadcasting, Clean USA, Gurukrupa Indian Grocery & Copy Services and Pest Control Consultants. The 2021 Nonprofit Organization Award was given to DeKalb County Youth Service Bureau. This award is given to a nonprofit that has had a significant impact on the community, including but not limited to job creation, collaboration in the community, philanthropy outside the organization, DeKalb Chamber involvement and social impact within the local community over the past three years. Other nominees included DeKalb County Community Gardens, Kishwaukee United Way, Opportunity House and Voluntary Action Center. “We are honored and certainly amongst a great group of nominees,” said Cydney Wessel, DeKalb County YSB executive director. “It’s amazing to me all the wonderful nonprofits throughout the county that really meet so many needs. Certainly, this year was unlike any other.” DeKalb County YSB also is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. “We’re really taking this 50th anniversary year as an opportunity to look at
what we’re doing, what we’re doing well, but more importantly, look at where we can go in the future,” Wessel said. Shawn Lowe, program director of 94.9 WDKB, was named the Chamber of Commerce’s 2020 Ambassador of the Year. For a list of previous years’ award winners, visit the DeKalb Chamber website. In his concluding speech, Matt Duffy, DeKalb Chamber executive director, spoke of the difficulties and the success stories of the past year during the COVID-19 pandemic. “As we look back at 2020, I think we’ll all agree it’s definitely going to be a year to remember,” he said. “Some may think it’s because of all the challenges that the year brought; however, what I will remember most is how this community continues to respond in the face of adversity. “With all great challenges come great success stories,” he said. “Our membership is full of those stories, and I hope those are what will continue to be shared.” For information about the chamber and to view videos created about the nonprofit organization and business of the year award nominees, visit www. dekalb.org.

ON THE RECORD ... with Michelle Schulz

SYCAMORE – Making others feel special and loved is part of Michelle Schulz’s job every day, not only on Valentine’s Day. Schulz is the manager of Kar-Fre Flowers, 1126 E. State St. in Sycamore. Schulz, her sister Kris Wrenn, and their staff have been busy preparing for Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, which falls on a Sunday this year. The florist shop is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Orders can be placed online at www.karfreflorist. com, by calling 815-895-6558 or by visiting the shop. Valentine’s Day orders should be placed by noon Saturday, Feb. 13. Schulz spoke to MidWeek reporter Katrina Milton about Kar-Fre Flowers, business during the pandemic and the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday.
Milton: Tell me about Kar-Fre Flowers. Schulz: The business was started by
my parents, Karen and Fred Rhynders, 48 years ago in August 1972. My dad helps sometimes with the bookwork, but they are both now retired. Now the business is run by my sister, Kris Wrenn, and I. Our shop’s first Valentine’s Day was in 1973, and my dad took me out of school that day to help run deliveries. I fell in love with what we did, making our customers happy. Flowers are a great way to share some happiness and bring joy to others’ lives.
Milton: What is Valentine’s Day like at your shop? Schulz: Roses are always the hot
pick on Valentine’s Day, whether it’s one rose, six, a dozen or more. It doesn’t have to be roses on Valentine’s Day. We can make something unique, something special that reflects your loved one. … February is a little gloomier, snowier and colder, so spring flowers like tulips with bright colors are also very popular. Spring flowers remind us that spring is coming and make us a little more hopeful about nice weather.
Milton: How can people place an order? Schulz: Orders can be placed online
or by calling. Our shop is also open. Placing an order earlier is better. On our website, you can see pictures of the beautiful bouquets and some other gifts, like teddy bears, that we offer. We partner with The Confectionary to offer chocolates as an add-on.
Milton: Why is buying from a florist different than a grocery store? Schulz: We do everything possible,

everything within our power, to make our flowers last as long as possible. We water our flowers with a floral preservative to make them last as long as possible. Nothing makes us happier than receiving photos from customers whose flowers have lasted weeks. … All of our trucks are preheated. Tropical flowers like warmer temperatures, at least 40 to 50 degrees. We wrap the flowers in poly bags, deliver them in a warm truck and get them delivered to the recipient as soon as possible. We don’t deliver our flowers in a box, and our bouquets are made by professional designers. Making our customers and the flowers’ recipients happy is what matters the most to us.
Milton: How has the pandemic impacted your business? Schulz: Initially, we shut down
in March and then it was just my husband, my sister and me. We had to let our crew go for five weeks, but they came back on May 1. During that time, we were fortunate to have the community’s support. During the pandemic, there haven’t been as many events. Weddings have been smaller and funerals have changed. People are choosing to have smaller celebrations. … We’ve done everything we can to make our delivery drivers and our customers as safe as possible. It’s all about adapting and evolving.
Milton: Will this Valentine’s Day be different? Schulz: This Valentine’s Day will be
a little different, especially because it’s on a Sunday. I think a lot of people will be celebrating on Friday by sending Milton: Do customers have to order flowers to work. Orders can be deliva large bouquet? ered or picked up on Saturday. We’ll Schulz: You can get a big bouquet, or you can get something smaller. You be closed Sunday, Valentine’s Day. on and Candace Miller of Sycamore are looking forward to celebrating Valentine’s Day this year. “We almost always go out on Valentine’s Day,” Jon Miller said. “Although we’ll be out of state, we’ll be celebrating with friends.” “It’s been a tough year with the pandemic, and it’s nice to go out, try something new and feel special,” Candace Miller said. “It’s nice to get out of the house and support local businesses and restaurants.” According to the National Retail Federation’s annual survey, 52% of U.S. adults plan to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year, spending a total of $21.8 billion. Of those surveyed, 73% said that celebrating Valentine’s Day is important even though there is a worldwide pandemic. Only 24% plan to gift their loved one with an evening out, the
lowest in the survey’s history, but 41% said they will plan a special dinner or celebration at home. Local restaurant owners have been preparing for the holiday, following Phase 4 of the Restore Illinois mitigation plan. Phase 4 allows restaurants to serve diners inside with up to 25% capacity. Mary Wilson, an owner of Hillside Restaurant in DeKalb, describes Valentine’s Day as “the most romantic day of the year” and displays antique heart decorations at the restaurant. In addition to its regular menu, Hillside will serve Valentine’s Day specials, including steak, jambalaya and shrimp. The “Lasagna for Lovers” special features beef or vegetarian lasagna for two, homemade soup or salad, rolls and butter and a heartshaped cherry chocolate cake. “Reservations are important because of capacity limits, but people can still get it to go or curbside orders,” Wilson said. “The holiday is
all about love. We love our customers and we hope they love us, too. We all could use a little more love this year.” Nat’s on Maple in Sycamore will be closed on Valentine’s Day but will offer specials on Saturday. Specials include beef medallions and shrimp as a surf-and-turf option, a homemade cheesecake with chocolate-covered strawberries and a Valentini martini, made with Tito’s handmade vodka, Chambord raspberry liqueur and Godiva chocolate liqueur. “Although we’re usually closed on Sundays, we usually open on Valentine’s Day, just not this year due to the pandemic and being short staffed,” said Judie Gaytan, restaurant general manager. “We’ll offer specials to help celebrate the holiday. Normally, we don’t do reservations for parties less than five people, but most of our customers come in a pair on Valentine’s Day.” Bill Hristakos, owner of Ellwood Steak and Fish House in DeKalb, said
Valentine’s Day is usually one of his restaurant’s busiest days of the year, but he “doesn’t know what to expect this year” due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Reservations are required at the restaurant on the holiday, and dinner specials for two will be offered. “Usually we’re at full capacity and it’s a very busy day at our restaurant,” Hristakos said. “This year will be a little different since we have limited capacity. We will still be offering carryouts, too.” Hristakos said he is “looking forward to celebrating Valentine’s Day this year, especially since there is a pandemic.” “Valentine’s Day is a celebration, and I think we could all use something happy, a reason to celebrate right now,” he said. “That’s what we’re here for as a restaurant, to accommodate that. We want our customers to enjoy the romantic atmosphere, with flowers on the table and a special dinner with the one you love.”

Nancy Miller has been singing in the choir at Sycamore United Methodist Church for 65 years.
Miller celebrates 65 years in SUMC choir THE MIDWEEK Nancy Miller started singing in the adult choir at Sycamore United Methodist freshman year of high school and never stopped – until this pandemic pause. But even now her voice will be heard in the virtual choir that premieres at 5 p.m. Feb. 13 and 8:30 and 10 a.m. Feb. 14. Miller has sung for about eight directors at SUMC, including Margaret Lair, Dell Lohr, Ruth Balch, Earl Lossel, David Aldis, current director Bev Rauch and Al Brand, who was a special source of encouragement. After high school choir and madrigals were done, adult choir at the church gave her a venue to continue to enjoy her love of music, fellowship with other singers and anthems based on biblical concepts. She has seen how the choir has brought joy to so many. She also has sung in two buildings – the former Methodist church at Somonauk and Elm streets, and the current structure at 160 Johnson Ave. She has been involved in more than 100 productions, sang solos and made
good friends, such as Carol Keneway, a 56-year member who she performed duets with. She also was there during the campaign to raise money for the majestic pipe organ. Miller and her husband, Gene, are longtime farmers in Sycamore, and they have many family members in the area as well. And as for the pandemic, while Miller can’t wait to get back to singing as a group, she and about 30 other singers and musicians practiced at home, and then came to church one at a time to record the song “One Flame,” which will premiere Transfiguration weekend. Intern Cory Nordine is doing the technical work, assisted by staff member Jim McCue. Craig Fritz is the choir pianist, and Chanette Oeser and Becca Rome enhanced the piece with flute and trumpet. Ashley Fitzwater and Jessica Ondracek provided the strings. SUMC is open for in-person worship for up to 50 people per service, and people can sign up at 815-895-9113. The services are also available to view on Facebook, YouTube and the church website at www.sycamoreumc.org.

Men admire a pretty face, a good figure, but most of all the happy, healthy, contented woman, as beauty fades and the figure will change. Women who are troubled with backache, headaches, those dreadful dragging sensations, and nervous irritability, cannot hope to be popular and advancement in either home, business or social life is impossible. The cause of these troubles, however, yields quickly to Lydia E Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound, as it is a natural restorative for such conditions and dispels effectually all those distressing symptoms. A lot of shoes were stolen from a C.B. & Q. train Saturday night and hidden under the snow fence just out of Shabbona. When found, the company was notified and when near Savanna in this state, the crew discovered the loss. They were billed from New York City to a point in Idaho. Sheriff Decker suggested that the goods be replaced in their hiding place because the thieves would be sure to return and get them. Four railroad detectives did this, but at midnight they went home. Of course the thieves would not call for them before 12. The small hours of the morning would be the time and so while the shoes have been recovered, the thieves escaped. Robert McCann, little son of Mr. and Mrs. John McCann, was sick a couple of days last week and when his mother asked him one morning if he was going to get up for his breakfast he told her to bring his breakfast to bed with him “like his daddy does.” Little Robert has recovered from the slight cold which was the cause of his illness. J.W. Concidine, night desk sergeant at the police station, has been named custodian of the memorial clock, and every Thursday the clock is to be wound and correctly set if it is not telling time in accordance with other timekeepers of the city.

1946 – 75 YEARS AGO The first rural call for the DeKalb fire company this year came in last night, but, fortunately, it did not prove serious. A roof fire three miles from the city on the Gurler Road drew the firemen to the Hans Lavene home owned by Axel Skoglund. The call came in at about 5:30 o’clock. Sparks from the chimney are thought to have caused the call. A small hole was burned in the roof. Firemen quickly ended the blaze and thereby once again proved the value of the community truck. Such a fire might have been serious had it gained a start and had the people been forced to wait for buckets to do the job. It looks very much as if there might be some skating at the Anaconda rink. The rink had been ready for several weeks, but the weather failed. With yesterday’s nippy wind and continued chill through the night, it was thought a try at flooding might be made today, if it did not turn mild again. Alice McQueen was hostess at this week’s meeting of the South Grove Home Bureau. Ten members and seven guests enjoyed a bountiful pot luck dinner, the main feature of which was a beautifully decorated cake honoring Mrs. John Hutchinson’s birthday. The second regular meeting of the Plowboys Four-H Club met Thursday evening at the home of Wendell and
Alan Hueber, of near Malta. Adopting a motion presented at the meeting, the club in the future will be known as the Plowboys Four-H Club, thus dropping South Grove from the name of the group. Another large addition to the present Cyclone plant in DeKalb is being constructed in the rear of the company property. Work has not progressed to such a great extent on this portion, but it is now being rushed, and the structure should be enclosed within a short time. Foundation work for even further building is already in place. Despite the low temperature, students enrolled in the Civil Pilots Training course at the Teachers College received their retake flight examinations at the Waterman airport yesterday. As a result, three more young men, William Terwilliger, Ralph Howe and Wesley Johnson, and one young woman, May Wohrer, have received their private pilot’s license. Because the condition of the ice on the pond at the State Teachers College is not very good, the ice carnival, which had been scheduled for this coming Sunday, has again been postponed. Just when it will be held is not known. 1971 – 50 YEARS AGO Re-investment of various funds and the raising of the village of Kirkland clerk’s salary were the main items of business at the recent village board meeting. The
The Good Citizen award winners were introduced at the recent meeting of the John Stark Chapter of DAR. These girls were chosen by their classmates and teachers on the basis of patriotism, leadership and cooperation. The recipients are; Deborah Hardy of Shabbona, Sue Lawrence of Genoa-Kingston, Christine Herleman of Sycamore, Rosemary Heinisch of DeKalb, Margaret Kerzich of Notre Dame, Jean Evans of Waterman and Barbara Scholl of Malta. Nominations for naming the proposed new library at Northern Illinois University are again being accepted for a period that will end March 15, 1971. Some 135 police officers from all over the state, Iowa and Wisconsin, have registered for the DeKalb Police Benevolent and Protective Association invitational pistol shoot, which is underway today at the new indoor pistol range in the municipal building. 1996 – 25 YEARS AGO A house, formerly located on Exchange Street in Sycamore, was moved down State Street yesterday. The roof of the house was cut off to help facilitate the house’s move near Sycamore Junior High School. Kishwaukee Community Hospital has relocated its heliport, the first step toward an expansion of its emergency room service. The hospital’s board of directors now hopes to go before the Illinois House Facilities Planning Commission within 10 days, with an application to proceed with a 10,000to 11,000-square-foot expansion of its emergency facility. The much debated housing development proposed near Mt. Hunger Road and Route 23, was finally approved by the Sycamore City Council, despite cries from residents to put the brakes on growth. – Compiled by Sue Breese

1921 – 100 YEARS AGO Wes Abbott is busy these days getting the old Burt property on Main Street in Malta up on blocks that it may be removed to some vacant lots he recently purchased. Mr. Abbott plans to fix the building up in good shape and use it as his residence. The building is one of the earlier business places of the town and was first occupied by Mrs. Linn as a millinery store.

14 OBITUARIES
BARBARA HIGH KUMMERFELDT Born: February 8, 1933 Died: January 20, 2021
Barbara High Kummerfeldt, 87, of Monroe, WI, passed away on January 20, 2021, after a brief illness. Barbara was born on February 8, 1933, in Freeport, IL the daughter of Glenn and Marie (Ludolph) High. She started performing at a young age, tap dancing at age 4, then becoming a vocal soloist, pianist and a highly respected and sought-after accompanist. She graduated with honors from Freeport High School in 1948. She received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, IA, where she met her future husband, Irvan J. Kummerfeldt. Irv and Barb were married on August 14, 1954, and spent almost 35 wonderful years together before he passed away November 12, 1988. Barbara and Irv lived in DeKalb, IL, for almost 40 years, raising their family and being very active in the community. After earning her Master of Music from Northern
Illinois University in 1970, she taught music in the public schools, Kishwaukee College, NIU and also privately. She believed very strongly in giving back to her community, fulfilling this goal as an active member of Altrusa International, DeKalb Landmark Commission, Downtown DeKalb Association, Illinois Arts Council, Rotary Club, a founding member of DeKalb Area Arts Council, and a founding board member of Children’s Community Theater, among other roles. She was also an advisor to the NIU chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota women’s music fraternity and mentored many young women as part of their internship programs. She was very active in the First Congregational Church in DeKalb, where she taught Sunday school, led the children’s choir and served in various committees and leadership roles. Relentlessly determined to “find out why God put you on this earth and do it to the best of your ability” and “never say it might have been,” she took on challenges, broke barriers, made a difference and left a lasting legacy. She often described herself as having four lives, each of which she lived to the fullest, including: wife and mother; pianist, organist and accompanist; teacher; owner’s representative for renovation and executive director for the Egyptian Theatre; and
consultant and business owner. It would seem as though paring this down to four lives is an over-simplification. She never let fear get in the way of learning the skills or knowledge required to complete her goals, as evidenced by her many diverse accomplishments. She always found her next calling as she was at her peak or successfully completing her current missions. She and her husband, Irv, received local, state and national recognition for their efforts to save, restore and develop a volunteer supported Egyptian Theatre. She served as Owner’s Representative for PET (Preservation of Egyptian Theatre) during the construction project, served as their first executive director and became a recognized expert in art facilities construction and management and a consultant for the planning, feasibility studies, adaptive reuse and construction of arts facilities. She was honored with the ATHENA Award and selected as a Woman of Accomplishment in 1997 for overcoming many obstacles and persevering in a male-dominated area of construction and facilities management to accomplish her dream of saving and restoring the Egyptian Theatre to become a self-supporting major cultural center for the community and surrounding area. She loved to travel and learn, exploring

much of the United States and traveling extensively in Europe, China, Australia, Russia and Egypt. She was even at the Berlin Wall when it was being torn down. In 1998, she retired to New Glarus, WI, returning to the area and village she held in her heart from her childhood. Never one to rest for long, she purchased and operated, with her new love, Steve Wisdom, the Maple Leaf Cheese and Chocolate Haus and Hoch Haus Bed and Breakfast. They were also very involved in the community, participating in the Historic Preservation Society, Chamber of Commerce and volunteering at the Swiss Historical Village. In later years, they spent the winter months in Vidalia, LA, where they made many friends and enjoyed volunteering at their beloved Auburn House in Natchez. She was preceded in death by her husband Irv and their son Kurt. Barbara is survived by her life partner of 22 years, Steve Wisdom; her daughter, Krista (Joe) Mann; grandson, Joseph Mann; and her precious cocker spaniel, Annie Kummerfeldt-Wisdom.
