TONICA VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT Tonica firefighters review emergency calls, training topics TONICA — At the February meeting of the Tonica Volunteer Fire Department, Chief Al Stremlau noted that there were 11 emergency calls during January. These calls consisted of one mutual aid structure fire call to Peru, three accident calls and seven ambulance calls. Trainings covered the review of all equipment that is carried on the trucks; various R.I.T (Rapid Intervention Team) operations; Officer Lead Squad Training, which covered Command and Control,

Leadership, Communications and Organizational Skills used for the Review and Operation of Apparatus and Equipment; and verification of the Operational Readiness of Personnel and Equipment. Deputy Chief Rick Turri reported on a planning and safety training that he attended covering highway construction and accident scenes. Stremlau conducted new member orientation with new probationary firefighter Ben Dodge. Assistant Chief Bill Gray reported that repairs to the rain gutters on the station and repairs to the backup emergen-

cy generator for the station have been completed. He also reported that he completed repairs to the exhaust system on pumper-1712. Stremlau reported on a recent Division-25 MABAS meeting that he attended. Additional meetings will be held with local mutual aid fire departments to review each department’s SOG pertaining to highway safety at accidents scenes. The department will participate in the United Way fundraiser that will be held at Aces & Eights on Feb. 28. See FIRE DEPARTMENT, Page 3

The buyer of an Oglesby landmark, Garzanelli’s Supper Club, Jeremy Hillyer of Tonica, confirmed he closed on the sale, and his son, David, who plans to run the restaurant, says he wants to preserve much of “the Garzanelli’s that everybody loves.” Hillyer said that should include the iconic neon sign and circular bar. and Hillyer family members confirmed the sale Feb. 5. ILLINOIS STATE POLICE

In age of legalized pot, ‘Blitz’ joins the State Police force New-generation police dog does not alert to cannabis BY ALI BRABOY Shaw Media A Belgian Malinois dog full of energy has joined the Illinois State Police District 17 forces based in LaSalle. Blitz, less than 2 years old, graduated from ISP canine certification school in November and has since worked with Trooper John Ritchie on his shifts practically every day since. “The canines are such a great resource to have,” Ritchie said. Blitz joins two other District 17 dogs. But he’s is a bit different than the others.

• FIRE DEPARTMENT Continued from Page 2 Ambulance Administrator Sue Huss reported on the progress of the new ambulance. She also reported that

He’s not certified on cannabis, which means although he can smell the substance as someone can smell Doritos or a car freshener, Blitz doesn’t alert officers to the scent. The dogs in the two most recent ISP K-9 classes aren’t certified on cannabis, Ritchie said. “We have to test him on cannabis to show that he’s not alerting to it,” he said. The K-9 dogs still are full-service dogs certified to find methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin and the derivatives such as crack cocaine or black tar heroin, he said. Blitz weighs about 50 pounds, which Ritchie said is nice when it comes to training. Some other police dogs can weigh 80 to 100 pounds, Ritchie said. “When you’re animated, they get animated,” Ritchie said. “The more you’re having fun, the more they’ll have fun.”

Ritchie plays tug-of-war with Blitz — “It’s much easier with a 50-pound dog versus a 90-pound dog. Your back feels a lot better afterward,” Ritchie said with a laugh. When people think of a police K-9, they often think of narcotic work, which is a big portion of the work the ISP handles, Ritchie said, but the dogs provide many more benefits in addition.

“They’re also a great resource especially with the colder months if someone gets lost,” and if a child runs outside in the cold temperatures without a parent noticing and needs locating or if a senior with Alzheimer’s wanders off, Ritchie said. Blitz also can track article searches, so if there’s a crime, the dog can look for evidence such as shell casings and knives. “They’re not robots, they’re not perfect. The more training you put into your dog, the better they’ll respond, just like in anything else because they’re a living being. It’s a huge responsibility,” Ritchie said. In addition to working with Illinois State Police, Blitz already has been an asset to local police departments. “He’s a great tool and a resource to be able to be called upon for all the local agencies and everybody in the surrounding area,” Ritchie said.

the Tonica Volunteer Fire Department ambulance has received an upgraded heart monitor/defibrillator that will be put in service soon. Firefighter Brad Keutzer reported on various secure systems that are being

considered for the fire station. Firefighter Jessi Breit and Gray reported on a new rescue saw that has been donated to the department by the Ladd Farm Mart. Stremlau announced that Captain Todd Anderson has been

approved as third-party Driver Certification Safety Officer by the Illinois Secretary of State’s DMV Office. Information will be transitioned from the current third-party Driver Certification Officer, Deputy Chief of Training Rick Turri.

OGLESBY — A longtime Oglesby institution, Garzanelli’s Supper Club, has sold, and the man who plans to run it wants to maintain many of the traditions in the restaurant. “We are happy to announce the restaurant has been sold. We wish the new owners the very best in the future,” a Facebook post on the old Garzanelli’s page read on Feb. 5. Jeremy Hillyer of Tonica purchased the property, but said his son, David, will run the restaurant. “It has always been something I’ve wanted to do, and my dad said we should take a leap at it and we did,” David Hillyer said. He said he’d always wanted to get into the restaurant business, and that desire increased when the opportunity to buy Garzanelli’s, a favorite of his, arose. Talk of the sale circulated through the community over the past month and a half, and Carretto

actually began almost eight months ago, and, though he’s not sure exactly what the Hillyers’ plans are, he’s glad that the transaction can help keep an Oglesby tradition alive. The Hillyers have a construction business, so they have a few things they’d like to upgrade. But David said he wants to keep the iconic neon sign, the circular bar and some of the other things in “the Garzanelli’s that everybody loves.” Hillyer said it will probably take a few months to get the business up and running. However, he said he has one piece of the puzzle in place, Carl Siemers, who cooked at Garzanelli’s for 27 years. The Carretto family had taken ownership of Garzanelli’s Supper Club in 1974, but it had long been a mainstay for gatherings, family dinners, cocktails, chicken and Italian dishes. With cook Jim Carretto battling a terminal illness, the Carrettos closed the restaurant in late October 2016. Garzanelli’s originally opened as a grocery store and tavern in 1918. The business sold just one time in its 98-year history, when Anna and the late Pete Carretto bought the restaurant in 1974 from the Garzanelli sisters, Katie Farneti and Elsie Porter. Jim and Chuck Carretto took it over from their parents.
