IVCH accepting donations of masks and personal protective equipment

Note to readers: Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru has released the following news release: Illinois Valley Community Hospital is working diligently to prepare for the possibility of treating a high number of COVID-19 patients. This includes making sure we have enough supplies on hand to meet the demand. While there is a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) across the country and ALL hospitals are conserving supplies, IVCH would like to assure you that masks and other necessary PPE items (gloves, gowns, eye cover, etc.) are available and are being worn by hospital and clinic staff as needed. Our current PPE usage and protocols are based on CDC standard and transmission-based precautions for

caring for patients with confirmed or possible COVID-19. While our mask and PPE supply is stable at this time, we are accepting any and all PPE items from businesses and members of the community who would like to make a donation. Here is a list of items that would be accepted: • Nitrile or vinyl gloves (all sizes). • Face masks (N95-rated, procedure or surgical). • Clear, hard plastic safety eyewear. • Plastic gowns. • Hair bouffant/cover. • Shoe/foot cover. • Eye shields. • Brown paper lunch bags (all sizes). • Alcohol wipes. • Bleach (unopened). Peru distillery gears up to produce sanitizer for hospitals, first responders SHAW MEDIA Star Union Spirits, a Peru distillery, is changing up its business to help the nationwide battle against COVID-19. In an ef fort to help address reported shortages of available medical supplies to organizations battling the pandemic on the frontlines, Star Union Spirits is shifting from its usual production of alco-

hol to produce hand sanitizer for hospitals, police departments, firefighters, first responders and other safety-net organizations across LaSalle County as the coronavirus pandemic continues. “Our goal is to produce as much as we can for the organizations in greatest need,” a press release from the company said, “and distribute the sanitizer where needed most.

“We’re working closely with state and local leaders in both public and private sectors to identify those areas where we can provide the most impact. “Our current efforts are focused solely on production for these essential groups, although we are hopeful that there may eventually be a public-facing program that helps others in the community in need.”

Upon entering the house, a floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace is the main attraction in a sitting area, accompanied by a large window that offers a view of the river. The second floor features Australian hardwood floors, exposed wooden beams and track lighting over large windows with views of the river and wooded area.

Walk into the kitchen and the first thing you can’t help but notice is a custom gas stove. “There’s an interesting story to that stove,” Marty said. “My stepmom worked with a designer to create it. The man that designed it ending up making an exact replica for John Belushi.” The rest of the kitchen is decorated in neutral shades with one exception: a cobalt blue sink. Marty laughed when talking about the sink. “My stepmom loved cobalt blue. You’ll see cobalt blue carpeting

TONICA — A log cabin lifestyle doesn’t require a trip back in time or into the wilderness — it just requires a drive to rural Tonica. Brothers Marty and Lambert Leonard are selling a three- to four-bedroom log-cabin style home along the Vermilion River, less than a mile west of Route 178. Despite the proximity to the state highway, the wooded home offers a sense of seclusion. “All of us love the fact that we can listen to the river run, especially in the fall,” Marty said. “It’s just so peaceful and relaxing.” The brothers’ father and stepmother bought the house in the 1990s. After their stepmother died 16 years ago and their father’s death in August, they decided to sell the house and its 4.6 acres. “It’s hard for us to sell because we

All three bedrooms have built-in features such as shelves and closet storage. The master bedroom features a 12-foot-long walk-in closet. “All of the rooms are bright on sunny days, especially the master bedroom,” Marty said. “That’s one of the great things about living here. All of the views are great.” The home has 2 1/2 bathrooms, with the third-floor bathroom featuring an interesting addition. “It was my stepmom’s idea to add a 1-foot actual water pump to the sink,” Marty explained. “When you turn on the faucet, the water comes out of the pump. We get a lot of comments about that water pump, of course painted cobalt blue,” he said. The home is professionally landscaped. A French door in the kitchen opens onto a wide concrete patio and walkway with a brick retaining wall. The property provides plenty of parking in a four-car garage. Exterior parking spaces also are available on a concrete and gravel driveway.

LASALLE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT | CORONAVIRUS

IN BRIEF

Residents who got tested more than doubles over one week

Rail car fire keeps firefighters busy for about four hours

BY DEREK BARICHELLO Shaw Media In the week ending Friday, March 27, the LaSalle County Health Department reported the number of residents tested to see whether they have the coronavirus more than doubled within the county. In its latest report, 93 people were tested. Of those tests, three resulted in confirmed cases of COVID19, 66 came back negative, 20 were pending and four were not received by the state lab. The previous Friday, the health department reported 42 people were tested, with one resulting in a positive case. At that time, 28 of the tests were negative, while 10 were pending. A little more than 4 percent of the tests recorded by the health department Friday have come back with a confirmed case. Testing through

commercial labs is not required to be reported to the county agency, however, the department is notified of any positive cases from IDPH State Lab or commercial labs. This means there are more negative testing results that will not be recorded. The department expects to see additional cases, and residents should assume they have been exposed to COVID-19. Residents can help by staying home, limiting the number of people they come into contact with, maintaining a six-foot distance from others and washing their hands. If someone develops symptoms of cough and fever, they should stay home and isolate themselves from others. Should symptoms worsen, they should contact their health care providers immediately. at the state lab is limited and protocols are in place to prioritize those tested. Currently, the state public health laboratories are testing only hospitalized patients and clusters in a congregate setting that serves more vulnerable populations, such as a supportive care facility, assisted living facility, group home, homeless shelter or correctional setting. T he LaSalle County Health Department said testing guidelines have frequently changed throughout the situation. Testing is requested by health care providers at hospitals and then authorized by the Illinois Department of Public Health and/or the local health department. If the individual is not approved for testing, health care providers can request testing through a commercial lab. There is limited commercial testing locally.

LEONORE — Multiple fire departments, including Leonore and Lostant, responded to a March 25 fire located about 1 1/2 miles north of Route 18 on East 12th Road. The fire involved a rail car full of railroad ties, said Leonore Fire Chief Don Miller. The train also had been hauling ethanol. Luckily, the conductor and engineer got the rail car that had been on fire away from the ethanol tankers, Miller said. Miller thanked all the fire departments who responded, including Leonore, Lostant, Wenona, Grand Ridge and Reading Township fire departments. Leonore’s department arrived at the scene around 6:30 p.m. March 29 and was there almost four hours, Miller said. There were no injuries, Miller said. — By Ali Braboy, Shaw Media
