I do my best to stay off the golf course. No need for alarm: I am not anti-golf. I understand (most of) the game, watch the occasional tournament on TV and hit the driving range a few times a year. But playing a round of golf is — currently, not forever — off the table. As an early middle schooler, I took a golf lesson. Horrifyingly, the club FLEW out of my hands and helicoptered into the driving range. Equally alarmed was my instructor, who chose that moment to tell me the clubs were his mother’s! Already at an age when embarrassment comes easily, this felt like something I may not survive. After retrieving his mother’s club and discovering, thankfully, it wasn’t bent or damaged in any way, it seemed pretty obvious: The golf course was not for me. I will admit that editing and factchecking our story on local golf courses in the Neighborhood Tourist region did make me second-guess this choice. What better way to explore different
towns and landscapes than a nice round of golf in the area? If this is on par with your interests, you’ll find the feature on P. 19. The spring issue of the magazine is full of ways to get outside and enjoy the warmer weather. Maybe a visit to Wyckwood House (featured on P. 34) sparks a sunny walk around downtown Aurora or Wheaton to discover the plethora of new businesses near the two locations. There are also tons of things to see and do in the Starved Rock Country area, including four farm-totable restaurants featured on P. 23. Maybe an adventure there is in your future!

he Herrington Inn and Spa hailed its silver anniversary in 2018, and in spring 2023 will commemorate 30 years as a destination along the Fox River in Geneva. While the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has proven a unique challenge to staff and visitors in recent years, the ambiance at the 60-room Inn remains a constant for guests from
all corners of the suburbs, state and country. “The Inn is warm, cozy and intimate,” says Lisa Landers, director of sales and marketing at The Herrington, 15 S. River Lane, Geneva. “The warm hues, stone floors and dim lighting are all calming and inviting. Our staff is very friendly and will always look for ways to make our guests feel welcomed and at home at the Inn.”
While the Inn traces its ties to the City of Brotherly Love — the site originally served as the home of James and Charity Herrington, who settled in Geneva from Philadelphia in 1835 — romance also plays an important role in the property’s present and future. Guests enjoy such amenities as heated floors, turndown service and homemade cookies and milk delivered each night before bed. Landers feels “the cookies and milk stand out” for visitors to the Herrington, who also receive a complimentary, European-style continental breakfast buffet in the lobby each morning. In addition to the romantic
accoutrements of its rooms, the Inn houses Atwater’s Restaurant, which has situated at its entrance a double-sided fireplace. Once inside, diners enjoy panoramic views of the Fox River, gazing out from the body of water’s west bank. When weather permits, visitors also can enjoy a peaceful setting along the waterfront while drinking or dining in the courtyard. Rooms, of course, feature serene perspectives of the river, long an attraction for guests. “They love it,” Landers says. “In-season they enjoy sitting out on their balconies and
enjoy the views and watching the wildlife, geese, ducks. … And we do see the occasional bald eagle.” Throughout the year, popular menu items include crab cakes and the artisan cheese and charcuterie plate for appetizers, which help whet the appetite for an exquisite array of entrees prepared by a kitchen staff comprising executive chef Kevin Gillespie, executive sous chef Bernardo Cardoso and chef de cuisine Gianfranco Aniello. Atwater’s and room service hours are 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For more information, visit www. herringtoninn.com.

CATERING
TO EVERY TASTE
J
ason Stoffels loves to prepare his signature meals for his clients’ weddings, birthdays and other celebrations at Enticing Cuisine in Batavia.
And when his clients are looking for something different, this chef loves to show his creative side. “I will share my menu with clients and tell them we can pick from here or you can tell me what you want,” Stoffels says. “I recently had a customer who wanted a brunch for her daytime wedding reception.” He first decided to pursue his own business in 2007, as a personal chef. Later he established Enticing Cuisine with his wife, Diocelina. The full-service catering company allows Stoffels to use his culinary skills to customize clients’ biggest celebrations. When he had the opportunity to bring his fresh flavors to the Batavia banquet location of the former Riverview
Banquets in 2020, he says it was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. He opened the doors in January 2021 with a remodeled banquet hall as a space for wedding receptions and other events. Stoffels has been working in kitchens since 1988. He attended Kendall College back when it was located in Evanston and earned his degree in culinary arts in 1996. “Kendall College was a great place to learn,” Stoffels says. Following college he worked in several top kitchens, adding that in the restaurant world, experience is what truly teaches one how to thrive. “Cooking is really hands-on and you learn what you can with life experiences,” Stoffels says. For Stoffels, having a business in Batavia is more than just a great location. It’s a place he’s lived in for a large part of his life, having watched it grow and evolve through the years. “Batavia has a great small-town feel,” he says.
Enticing Cuisine’s new Batavia location offers meals, reception space fit for any occasion By Melissa Rubalcaba Riske Photo provided by Enticing Cuisine
It wasn’t easy: The ongoing pandemic created challenges for clients trying to host events, but the couple maintained their vision. He handles the food, and she assists with the decor, reservations and many other aspects of the business. They are a small business, but he says that allows them to be hands-on when it comes to serving customers and creating a dining experience that fits their event. Like many banquet halls, he offers traditional items but also isn’t afraid to get creative, whether a client is looking to feature a special ethnic dish or to serve guests something fun and different. The first year in the Batavia location has brought weddings, birthdays and anniversaries. There were bridal and baby showers and even a bar mitzvah, too. Having guests celebrate life and love while enjoying his cooking gives this chef joy and inspires him to continue creating cuisine that entices the senses.

BELLA-GIA BOUTIQUE 27 S. Main St., Oswego www.bella-gia-boutique.myshopify.com Floral is still in, says Stacy Shaw, store manager for Bella-gia Boutique. The shop, located in the heart of downtown Oswego, carries trendy and unique clothes, accessories and gifts. “For spring we have short floral spaghetti strap dresses. Little ruffles on them are adorable and sweet,” Shaw says. Also popular? Satin dresses. “They could be short or three-quarter length, maybe with a satin tie around the waist,” she says. “Adding a crop cardigan if it’s chilly is also on trend,” she adds. GIGI’S 126 E. Washington St., Morris Facebook: Gigi’s Mini, midi and maxi dresses are all still going strong, but the midi length — between knee and ankle — continues to reign supreme, says Heidi Kindelspire, owner of this downtown shopping destination. She also predicts seeing more slip dresses, wrap dresses with waist ties, one-shoulder dresses and ruffles this spring.

Third St., Geneva www.jadeclothinggeneva.com At this downtown Geneva shop, visitors will find cool brands and quality clothes. Owner Hannah Thuer says floral dresses will never go out of style. “And they are a great option for some pattern and color,” she said. The bodycon dress trend is also still going strong, she says. Short for “bodyconscious,” the style is designed to outline the wearer’s figure and enhance the body’s curves. “There are tons of solid-colored bodycon dresses that are a nice light weight,” Thuer says. “You can’t ever go wrong with a bodycon style. Tons of bright colors but in classy silhouettes. Throw on a short chunky heel to complete the look. If needed, a blazer is a great option to cover up when it gets chilly. Or a flowy printed kimono for a more boho look.”

any items might make the list of features northern Illinois is known for.
Cold, snowy winters. Warm, sun-kissed summers. Some of the best food on the planet. And if you ask Bryan Tweed, there is at least one other thing that should make that list: some of the best golf, per capita, anywhere, with an abundance of courses blessed with beauty to stir the soul, and layouts to challenge golfers of all skill
levels — whether they be veterans or those among the millions of new players who took up the sport as a way to get out of the house.
“Whether you’re a scratch golfer looking to chase the course record or brand-new to the game, there are a multitude of courses nearby to meet your needs.”
Tweed, an adviser for GolfPass and author of the Midwest Golf Tripper blog, notes the Chicago region boasts more than 300 golf courses, making it one of the “most golf dense” urban areas in the U.S. While a number of those courses are covered by famous private clubs that have hosted major championships, Tweed says the blessings of golf abundance extend to “a plethora of fantastic public courses accessible to the golfing ‘everyman,’” as well.
So with northern Illinois’ famous winter in the rearview mirror at last, we’ve assembled a handful of some of the region’s best public courses for you to check out this golf season and seasons to come.
“What makes the Chicago area such a compelling golfer’s town is there are a wide range of nationally ranked courses, par-3 courses for novice players and juniors, and some of the oldest courses built in the Midwest,” Tweed says.

Why you should play: Situated amid “some of the most distinctive natural landscapes” of any golf course in the Chicago area, Blackstone offers a beautiful and challenging setting for golfers of all skill levels. The course covers 6,727 yards, meandering through oak and hickory forests and 26 acres of protected wetlands. But four sets of tees can allow less experienced golfers, or those looking for a more relaxing round, to play just 4,893 yards. More experienced players will find a challenge in avoiding the course’s 54 sand bunkers. Less experienced players will enjoy the course’s “generous fairways.” “The views are as beautiful as the course is demanding,” Blackstone says on its website. Course designers Lohmann and Quitno say the course has been described as a “private club experience without the expense.” HIGHLANDS OF ELGIN — Elgin Designed by: Keith Foster in 2003, Art Schaupeter in 2010 Rates (depending on time/day): $37-75 Rating: 73.8 Accolades: Consistently ranked in the Top 20 of Top Courses in Illinois by Golf Advisor, including No. 9 in 2016. Rated in Top 25 for Off-Course Amenities in the U.S. by Golf Advisor in 2016. Why you should play: Reclaiming an old stone quarry, the Highlands of Elgin offers players from throughout the Chicago region a “premier destination” for a day on the course, according to its website. Nine holes play in and around the former quarry’s “unique and dramatic landforms,” including four holes situated on a bluff 30-40 feet above a 12-acre quarry lake,
offering golfers “incredible views and numerous shot options on each hole.” MISTWOOD GOLF CLUB — Romeoville Designed by: Ray Hearn Rates (depending on time/day): N/A Rating: 74.7 Accolades: Consistently ranked in the Top 25 of Top Courses in Illinois by Golf Advisor, including No. 5 in 2021. Rated No. 2 for Off-Course Amenities in the U.S. by Golf Advisor in 2022. Ranked among Top 50 Public Ranges in the U.S. by Golf Range Magazine. Why you should play: Mistwood recently completed a two-year renovation, winning multiple accolades from across the country in the process. The course sets “a new standard of excellence, excitement and entertainment for Chicagoland golf,” according to the Mistwood website. Measuring 7,005 yards long, the course features 20 St. Andrews-style sod-wall bunkers, “truly bringing a feeling of Scotland to the Midwest.” NETTLE CREEK GOLF CLUB — Morris Designed by: Buzz Didier Rates (depending on time/day): N/A Rating: 72.1 Accolades: N/A Why you should play: GolfPass says Nettle Creek “offers one of the most unique golfing experiences in southwest Chicagoland.” The 6,500-yard course meanders through ponds and wetlands, with putting greens and fairways often framed by fields of wildflowers and native grasses, for a “remarkable golf experience,” according to Nettle Creek’s website. The course itself is described as

“fun and sporty,” with “ample risk/reward scenarios to test golfers of all abilities.” GolfPass adds, “You may find you will need to use every club in your bag.” The course has hosted events for the Illinois PGA and the Chicago District Golf Association. Nettle Creek is associated with Morris Country Club but is open to the public on weekends and holidays. PRAIRIE LANDING GOLF CLUB — West Chicago Designed by: Robert Trent Jones Jr. Rates (depending on time/ day): $50-95 Rating: 73.2 Accolades: Consistently ranked in the Top 25 of the Top Courses in Illinois by Golf Advisor, including No. 1 in 2020 and No. 2 in 2018. Ranked No. 1 among best public courses in Illinois by Golfers’ Choice in 2021. Rated 4.5 stars by Golf Digest for “Best Places to Play.” Why you should play: This 6,950-yard prairie links-style course — meaning wide open, without many trees — has been designed with the golfer in mind, the website declares. Prairie Landing staff say: “The course is always in outstanding shape from tee to green. Many golfers say they feel the
quality of the course meets or exceeds that of a private country club.” Further, they note, the course’s layout allows for wind to be a real factor in the game, meaning the course can play quite differently with each visit. “This West Chicago course will make you feel as though you’ve been transported to a seaside links course in Ireland,” declares GolfPass, describing Prairie Landing.

trees, according to GolfPass. The course, measuring 7,158 yards, includes a stream that affects five holes. SENICA’S OAK RIDGE GOLF CLUB — La Salle Designed by: William Spear Rates (depending on time/day): N/A Rating: 73.0 Accolades: Golf Advisor Top 25 Courses in Illinois 2015 and 2017. Rated No. 16 by Golf Advisor Top 25 Value Courses in the U.S. in 2017. Why you should play: The course blends perfectly with the surrounding landscape to mirror the natural terrain of north central Illinois. The 6,823-yard course is routed through oak forests and around five lakes, while the back nine holes bring a meandering creek into play. Almost 50 bunkers are placed strategically throughout the course, producing a challenge for all skill levels. While the course will demand some accuracy, Senica’s Oak Ridge’s website
notes, “It’s not overly punishing if you’re errant.” Reviewers on GolfPass note the course’s natural beauty, similar to the surrounding farmland, while lauding the technical layout. One reviewer notes, “Every hole is completely different and the greens are true and fast, but fair.” WHITETAIL RIDGE GOLF CLUB — Yorkville Designed by: Greg Martin Rates (depending on time/day): N/A Rating: 71.6 Accolades: Rated No. 22 in Golf Advisor Top 25 Courses in Illinois in 2015. Why you should play: The championship links-style course plays as “two distinct nines,” according to the Whitetail Ridge website. The first nine holes of the 6,730yard course work their way around wetlands and water features, while the back nine offer “a variety of elevations and striking views of the surrounding countryside” from atop a ridge, the website says.

Wyckwood House boutique finds success in two downtown destinations By Melissa Rubalcaba Riske Photos provided by Shannon Gutierrez
NEIGHBORHOOD TOURIST
SPRING 2022
I
t started with an eye for style and the vision for a boutique that would offer something new, vintage or even handcrafted. It also took the willingness to try something new and a little selfconfidence.
That was the recipe Shannon Gutierrez used as she launched her business Wyckwood House, first in Aurora and then at a second location in Wheaton. The homey boutique offers a mix of items, many crafted by local artisans. Though open just a few years, she has quickly gained a strong following, including
devoted locals who pop in to see what’s new. “I love fashion and design and making things aesthetically pleasing,” Gutierrez says.
Friends were always complimenting her style and gifts. She saw the potential for having her own business but wasn’t ready to dive in yet. “I started to go after this idea, and I started with a journal, writing down my thoughts, making business plans,” she says. Her first business experience was in her own home, inviting a few friends who
OWN
had their own business to bring their merchandise to display and hosting an open house where neighbors, colleagues and more friends could visit and shop.
to making connections with other local businesses. The program Boss Babe, in partnership with Aurora Downtown, invites fellow women business owners to network.
“I was really nervous when I sent out the first invites, and then everybody said yes,” she remembers. She made sangria and found musicians to enhance the party atmosphere. The event was a hit.
This spring Gutierrez plans to move Wyckwood House to a new location in downtown Aurora, the former school district offices. She loves the architecture and history of the older building and has undertaken the project of renovating her shop and its new addition of a cocktail bar, all to further enhance the event space in her retail business.
That first party was in 2017. She called it a holiday market and would host a few more out of her home, soon realizing the potential she had to launch her own retail space. One of those shoppers at the market was Marissa Amoni, the manager of Aurora Downtown. She encouraged Gutierrez to have a pop-up retail store in downtown Aurora. The success of that event led her to sign the lease on her own retail space in downtown Aurora in spring 2018. By that fall she was able to leave her full-time job as a youth director for a multicampus church and solely focus on Wyckwood House. Gutierrez, an Aurora resident, says she had volunteered to help with the First Friday events and knew there was a great opportunity to launch her business. “I would come and volunteer for the events and I saw so much potential and growth, I wanted to be a part of that,” Gutierrez says. “I’m so glad I did, the community is incredible, and the people are so supportive.” The launch of Wyckwood in downtown Aurora comes as the shopping and dining district undergoes a transformation that is bringing people back to the area. New additions, including fine dining and casual restaurants, are popular spots before a show at the Paramount Theatre. Community events like First Fridays and the Alley Art Festival are helping people rediscover downtown Aurora. “The last decade has been a renaissance for downtown Aurora,” Amoni says. “We have a real treasure.” In opening Wyckwood, Gutierrez has gone beyond managing her business
Recently she hosted a local hockey mom organization for a private night of shopping, earning money for their sports program and a fun evening together. “Events are a huge part of our business model. It was very intentional. We are not a 9-5 retail shop, I want to be a place where people can come in, grab a gift and also a place to hang out, to connect to people,” she says. The success of her Aurora location propelled her to open a second location in downtown Wheaton in 2020. It’s a nod to the community where she grew up. Her mother, who has long supported her dream, is at the helm in Wheaton, where she enjoys chatting with the shoppers and helping them find the perfect gifts. While the Wheaton location on Hale Street doesn’t have the space for a cocktail bar, its close proximity to downtown restaurants makes it an ideal spot for private shopping events followed by dinner and drinks nearby. In January she even hosted a bachelorette party with that exact game plan. Gutierrez says the venture has been amazing, from her dreams on paper to opening the beautiful boutique and the excitement of the new location in downtown Aurora. And it’s not just her dreams that have flourished at Wyckwood House. “We’ve had a few people come in and be a part of the store and now they have opened their own brick-and-mortar places in Yorkville, Batavia,” she says. “I think it’s pretty magical.” NEIGHBORHOOD TOURIST

A Q&A with Steve Augeri, former lead vocalist of Journey, about his music career and upcoming performance in McHenry County

NEIGHBORHOOD TOURIST
SPRING 2022
R
ock ’n’ roller Steve Augeri and his band are set to bring a show of melodic, blues-influenced rock to Crystal Lake’s Raue Center for the Arts on May 7. Augeri, whose well-versed musical past included a stint as lead vocalist of Journey from 1998 to 2006, says fans can expect a blend of familiar hits alongside some newer material — including, perhaps, selections from his new album, “Seven Ways ‘Til Sunday,” slated for a later 2022 release.
Neighborhood Tourist Magazine contributor Kevin Druley spoke recently with Augeri, discussing music appreciation, his upcoming performance and what it means to be a rock star. The following is a transcript, edited slightly for length. NEIGHBORHOOD TOURIST: Gigs and shows are coming more regularly again, but how did the initial lockdown phase of the pandemic impact you musically? STEVE AUGERI: Obviously, we had two slow years. Pretty much, 2020 was a wash; 2021 picked up, and ’22, thank God, it looks like it’s going to be a little better, although people are still wise to be cautious. However, when things shut down around the globe, we were riding high. We had a really great, strong year in 2019. Business was terrific, and then it came to a screeching halt. So, I don’t know if it was just by chance, (but) I just switched gears. I was thinking I’ve got a lot of things to say musically, so I went into writing mode, and it turned on a spigot or just had the creative juices started flowing, and everything that had been bottled up in me for the previous 10 years just came out and started a creative process both as an individual and as well as a handful of my bandmates. So rather than have a lost year, I had a very productive year. I found a silver lining in a very dark cloud, and because of it, I have an album’s worth of material. I’m an optimist by nature, and that’s how I kind of see this. This is an opportunity to

hit a reset button, I think, and that’s what I’ve done. I’ve hit a reset button and I feel kind of reborn in a lot of respects. NT: To what extent does knowing many fans are attending their first show in a good while influence the set list? SA: You know, that could very well be. I hadn’t really thought about it in that respect. However, I think we are going from a drought, entertainment-wise, and even a drop of water is going to be welcome, you know. Although I haven’t personally experienced that myself on the audience side … I can tell you as a performer, it’s an incredibly gratifying experience after not playing and performing for people, it is such a joy again to see folks in the audience appreciate seeing live music again and being entertained again. And 50 percent of that could just be getting out of the house, so I can’t take all the credit. Hopefully, we’ve seen the last of it and everything from here on in is cake. The good cake. The real nice stuff, man. The fancy icing, and maybe seven layers of it. NT: What do you know about the Raue Center as a venue? What can fans expect from the show?
Arts & Entertainment
SA: It’s going to be an honor to play such a beautiful house like that. It looks gorgeous, so we’re looking forward to that. We’re looking forward to walking the halls and exploring the architecture. A majority of the show, it’s the old saying, “Give the people what they want,” and that was always the case

even when I was with Journey proper. We found out early on that 99.9 percent of the people wanted to hear the hits, and they wanted to hear the songs that they were most familiar with. So that is our main focus and our main objective, and then it’s always good to color it a little bit, just to sprinkle a little surprise and a little new energy, a little new information. Especially, you can feel the audience and you can feel if you can get away with a little bit more. You can play something that they’re not expecting, or if you think they’re open to it, you can play a couple new songs. Otherwise, you just play one. It’s never etched in stone. But again, they can absolutely expect to hear all their favorite Journey music. NT: It’s established that you recall pricing an iconic Journey album, “Escape,” while working at a New York record store as a young man. How did you transition from knowing a band’s catalog from listening to it on a record to knowing and performing it? SA: Yes, I was working at a record store in Brooklyn, and prior to that “Escape” record, I was just a casual fan. I was a fan of (original lead singer Steve Perry’s) voice. But I didn’t know the deep cuts. I just knew what I heard on radio. And so when that album came out, I remember there was a time when you would sell an entire case of LPs. And in addition to that, we would play it a minimum of once a day. So as you can imagine, hearing it every day for probably a couple of months, it became a part of my DNA. And not
just by force, but because I absolutely loved it. There wasn’t anything I could possibly critique that was wrong with it. It was everything I enjoyed. It was the vocal style of an R&B singer, and the hard rock sound of great guitar of Neil Schon and the writing of Jon Cain with those gentlemen. And it became a part of me, not knowing that, fast-forward years later, that I would be standing on a stage with them or standing in a vocal booth recording with them. I would have never dreamt in a million years that that would have been the case.
