Ringing in the new year

Check out stories to follow in new year By MARY BETH VERSACI mversaci@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – While we’re only a few days into the new 2015 calendar, there are already plenty of stories brewing in Lombard. Here’s a look at the headlines to watch for in 2015.

WATCH LIST Story tips

1. Mandoline murder What we know: A new January trial date was set for Villa Park resident Todd Mandoline in November, whose murder trial was expected to begin that month. Mandoline is accused of Todd killing his ex-girlfriend, Mandoline Paula Morgan, by starting a fire that spread to her Lombard home in 2012. Mandoline faces four counts of first-degree murder, three counts of aggravated arson, one count of arson and one count of criminal damage

He pleaded not guilty to all charges in August 2013. Prosecutors said Mandoline was angry after being escorted out of a birthday party at Morgan’s home July 21, 2012. He allegedly returned later that night, stuck a piece of paper in the fuel tank of Morgan’s car and lit it on fire. Flames engulfed the car, and the fire spread to the

home where Morgan and her friend, Jason Cassidy, were trapped in an upstairs bedroom. Morgan’s young son was able to escape the home. Morgan later died from smoke inhalation, but Cassidy recovered from his injuries. If Mandoline is convicted, he could face a sentence of between 20 and 60 years for the first-degree murder charges. If he’s convicted of aggravated

What’s next: A tentative trial start date is scheduled for Jan. 12. Quote of note: “The whole perspective I had on life was altered.” Fire victim Jason Cassidy

2. Controversial cannabis What we know: Several community members spoke Nov. 6 in opposition to the proposed

location of a medical marijuana dispensary because of its proximity to Montini Catholic High School and other concerns. MMRE LLC has requested to bring the 2,500-square-foot dispensary to an existing office building at 510 E. 22nd St., down Fairfield Avenue from Montini, 19W070 16th St. Both the office building and school are near their streets’ intersections with Fairfield Avenue. Montini President Jim Segredo said he is concerned for students passing the facility as they leave school or visit nearby Yorktown Shopping Center between school and after-school activities. He is also worried about the increased traffic and crime he believed the dispensary might bring and the possibility of people obtaining state-issued medical marijuana cards to resell marijuana. His unease was echoed by other school officials, as well as residents.

a pedestrian underpass to the Lombard Metra station, and it will continue until an expected end date in the spring. The ongoing construction has created some inconveniences for commuters in the interim by changing where and when they can use the facilities. Construction hit a notable point in December when John Burns Construction crews dug the tunnel itself. In addition to the pedestrian tunnel, the $9.7 million project includes new retaining walls, ramps that adhere to the Americans with Disabilities Act, stairways, platform shelters, canopies over inbound and outbound platforms and landscaping. The project will increase safety at the station by eliminating the crossing of the

The closeness of the proposed dispensary to a nearby school bus stop and homes seemed to drive the opposition as well, rather than a disapproval of medical marijuana itself. An online petition opposing the dispensary started by a resident has gained 114 signatures since Oct. 22. Segredo also submitted a petition to the board signed by 177 people opposing the facility, along with a packet of research. The board tabled its discussion, following the public hearing in November, and planned to revisit the request at its Dec. 4 meeting to allow the trustees time to evaluate all input and make a decision on the dispensary. What’s next: After the petitioner requested a continuance, the Village Board now will discuss the request at its next meeting – 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Lombard Village Hall Board Room, 255 E. Wilson Ave. Quote of note: “We believe this facility has the potential to be a safety risk in many ways to our students.” Montini Catholic High School President Jim Segredo

FOCUS ON ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE One often overlooked way that athletes can enhance their performance is to improve the various aspects of vision that are required to be successful in their sport. One possible area for improvement is “focus flexibility,” the ability to change focus from a faraway object to a near one, or vice versa. Another is “peripheral awareness,” which is the ability to perceive what is going on at either side without turning the head. “Dynamic visual acuity” is the ability to see objects clearly when the person is moving quickly, and “depth perception” involves making spatial judgments, including how far away an object or person is from someone. Maximizing these vision sport skills can result in significant on-field and on-court improvements.

GLEN ELLYN – The College of DuPage reviewed the results of a community survey at a Dec. 18 Board of Trustees meeting. The survey was performed by Comiskey Research, a marketing and data research firm in Elmhurst. It is expected to cost the college $8,600. Comiskey President Sigmund Saltz said the results showed “impressive numbers.” The survey was conducted in December via telephone with 400 District 502 residents. Questions were asked on a seven-point scale. Saltz said those answering with a six or seven indicated strong agreement, or a “topbox response rate.” Anyone answering with a one or two demonstrated opposition, or a “bottom-box response rate.” Eighty-two percent gave a top-box response when asked if the college’s tuition was a good value, compared to 2 percent giving a bottom-box response. Top-box responses on the subject increased from 46 percent in a similar survey conducted by Comiskey on the

college’s behalf in March 2013. The school was perceived to have a positive image by 73 percent of those surveyed in December, who gave a top-box response – an increase from 58 percent in the 2013 survey. Two percent of participants gave a bottom-box response in the December survey. When asked if they felt it was important to offer bachelor’s degrees in fields where job opportunities exist, 76 percent in December gave a topbox response and 8 percent gave a bottom-box response. Other takeaways from the recent survey include: • Agreement that College of DuPage has an excellent academic reputation: 70 percent top-box response and 2 percent bottom-box response • The portion of the tax bill that goes to the college – less than 4 percent – is reasonable given the programs offered by the college: 66 percent top-box response and 9 percent bottom-box response • The college should have nine to 18 months worth of reserves to operate should a revenue interruption occur: 64 percent top-box response and 36

percent bottom-box response. College of DuPage was fourth on a list of 10 colleges and universities when respondents were asked to name higher education institutions in Illinois. The three above College of DuPage were the University of Illinois at Chicago, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Northern Illinois University. The school was the thirdmost frequent response when people were asked what university or college they would like to attend. Saltz said the 2013 survey included questions similar to the one in December, but the questions weren’t worded exactly the same way. Trustee Kathy Hamilton said she has a “wholesale rejection” of the analysis because differently worded questions were used in the two surveys. “For me, when I look at that divergent, I really find that difficult to believe,” she said. Saltz said he wouldn’t discount the data because of the slight change in wording. “You can’t discount the fact that these are dramatically improved numbers,” he said.

Christmas birding produces big turnout By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Birders from around the county and beyond migrated into the forests, preserves, lakes and streets of DuPage County for the annual Christmas Bird Count in mid-December. Each year, the National Audubon Society sponsors counts across the country. The two events the DuPage Birding Club held centered around the Morton Arboretum in Lisle on Dec. 14 and the Fermilab in Warrenville on Dec. 20. Each group covers a 7.5mile radius from that point and works with area captains to coordinate movements and spot as many different birds as possible. “Our counts are some of the largest if not the largest in the Midwest,” said Jeff Chapman, the coordinator for the Fermi-

lab count and an environmental consultant from Woodridge. This December, birders spotted a record number of different species – 89 – at the Arboretum. The Fermilab count saw an above-average 83 species. The society celebrated its 115th Christmas Bird Count in 2014, according to the Audubon website. By working with coordinators like Chapman, the Society helps compile the data for both local posterity and a bit of analysis. “This is ... well-defined counting in the same spot year to year, so we can track the trends of certain species,” Chapman said. Chapman said the annual counts average around 100 birders apiece, and have been growing in recent years. “Why do people bird?” said Bob Fisher, member of the DuPage Birding Club and

president of the Illinois Ornithological Society. “Why do they go out on a cold gray day in [December]? Part of it is the thrill of the chase.” Fisher said many enjoy being a part of a larger effort of cataloging, but there is a definite undercurrent of competition and adventure to the effort. “In their secret heart of hearts every Christmas Bird Count birder longs to see some rarity on the Christmas Count to say ‘I saw it.’” he said. “And they don’t complete the sentence with ‘and you didn’t.’ They want a whole bunch of other people to see it.” At the end of the counts, the Birding Club hosts an annual dinner, tallying the final counts for all species across both events while they regale one another with bird count stories and bond over a shared love of nature.

‘There is one less family that is homeless’ This year was an exciting year for DuPagePads, as 392 people obtained permanent housing, 145,501 meals were served, 44,284 nights of shelter were provided and 1,360 individuals were assisted, including 241 children in 144 families. One of these families was Angel’s, and she shares her journey below. “With nowhere to go, my children and I walked to COMMUNITY DuPagePads. With a lump in VOICE my throat, tears in my eyes Carol and my pride in my purse, I Simler told them, ‘I need help.’” Myriad challenges led Angel to this point. She had been through an abusive marriage, suffered health complications, lost her $42,000-a-year job and no longer had a place to call home for her and her children. Angel describes her life at that time as being, “downright depressing!” Angel said the staff at DuPagePads offered her a helping hand. “They were there to root for me – that type of cheering section helps you face your giants.” In February 2012, Angel moved into her own apartment. “My case manager greeted us at the door and said, ‘welcome home.’” Tears welled in Angel’s eyes as she looked around her furnished apartment. “There were bags and bags. They had taken care of every detail, from light bulbs to dishes and everything in between.” Angel and her children had been doing well until this summer when Angel faced immense pain, which called for an emergency room visit and immediate surgery. Her son, who had accompanied her in the ambulance, was told by the doctor he could not stay overnight. “I was hysterical and with no relatives to call, I contacted my DuPagePads case manager.” Angel’s case manager showed up to the hospital at 4:30 a.m. to pick up her son. Following the surgery, she brought Angel’s children back to visit her and assured them their mother was going to be OK. Angel said DuPagePads has “been my rock through this trying time.” “From a ride to the grocery store to providing cleaning supplies, DuPagePads does whatever they can to help. Because of DuPagePads, my children can stay at their school in Naperville; there is one less family that is homeless, one less child on the streets. To my DuPagePads family, words cannot express the gratitude and admiration I have for you! Thank you for never letting go!” Interested in assisting families and individuals like Angel? Visit our website, www.dupagepads.org/donate, to see how your donation can make more success stories possible. We look forward to a new year as we work together to end homelessness in DuPage County.

The grand opening celebration for the Community Memorial Site for the late Lombard Village President Bill Mueller on Oct. 31 was one of Lombard’s top stories of 2014.

Here’s hoping you had a great 2014 and that 2015 is even better. A lot happened in Lombard and Villa Park in the past year, and it’s been our honor and privilege to bring you the details of those stories and the fascinating people who make the news. If you missed our annual roundup last week of the top stories of the year, you can find it online at http://shawurl.com/1na5. Congratulations to Montini Catholic High School teacher Christine McManus, who recently was awarded the University of St. Francis’ Teacher of the Month Award. In her 22nd year at Montini, McManus received the award Nov. 25 for her ability to nurture “a relationship that transcends community in a familial way.” Keep up the good work. I’m a 62-year-old black man, and I hate that all this race stuff, black and white, is going on. I will never understand how all this got started. Back in the day, black people had to go in the back door or sit in the back of the bus, and white people could make them get up so they could sit down. Why did all this happen? Why couldn’t we have love from the beginning and stop all this hate? I don’t understand how the color of your skin [matters]. God made us all, we are all God’s children and I can’t understand all this hate.

Why do chairpersons and the mayor of Elmhurst not help the small business owners, instead of looking to get more money? A small, antique-type store, Mindy’s on Vallette Street, had to close because Elmhurst raised rents to exorbitant amounts. Throughout the years, many small businesses closed down due to the same scenario. Doesn’t Elmhurst want these unique stores to bring people into their town?

Vote needed on Village Hall, police station

Just wanted to commend the Lemont Police Department on their expert police work. They’ve really shown their citizens how well they serve and protect by sitting at the entrance to a Rolling Meadows subdivision in an unmarked black SUV with darkened windows ticketing the hardworking taxpayers on their way to work. Consistently ticketing individuals at 6 a.m. when no kids are present and where there are no homes on a road that is posted 20 mph really shows the skill and craftiness of these officers. Keep up the good work. Maybe the new police chief will focus these revenue generators on true police work, and if there is no true police work to be had in the town of Lemont, maybe we have too many police officers and could save a little on our taxes.

I believe the people of Downers Grove should be able to vote on whether our town should build a new Village Hall and police station. Someone said people shouldn’t have the opportunity to vote on this issue because a traffic signal is needed in their neighborhood. Putting up a new traffic signal costs a couple hundred thousand dollars, not $50 million. I could support putting a traffic signal there, but that unrelated issue should not limit the ability of people to make decisions for their community. This is a big change for Downers Grove, and the people should have the right to vote on what they think about this proposed new Village Hall and police station.

Philip Carl Becker, Jr., 91, of Aurora, IL, formerly of Westchester, IL and Kansas City, MO passed away December 29, 2014, peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Because this joy ride can lead us all to a healthier place. And if that’s not a good thing, well, then we don’t know what is. LA GRANGE – When you’re craving the taste of Italy, there’s no need to empty your savings account on plane tickets and hotel stays. Just head to downtown La Grange and visit La Buona Vita to experience delicious, homemade Italian fare. On a stormy December evening, my brother and I decided we were in the mood for a home-cooked, hearty Italian meal, and decided to give La Buona Vita a try. Eager to satisfy our appetites, we perused the long-sheet menu tempting us with everything from steak and lamb chops to seafood. To open the meal, we ordered fried calamari, fully aware of the amount of calories we were about to consume. Once we’d savored the well-prepared appetizer, our server brought our dinner salads and two generously portioned pasta dishes. My fellow diner chose the Linguine Viareggio, featuring linguine with mussels, baby clams and scallops dressed in a lively pomodoro sauce. The meal, according to my brother, had the perfect amount of spicy kick. While my taste buds usually crave a heap of spices, I decided to order the Rigatoni Emilio – pairing the pasta with fresh mozzarella, homemade marinara and garlic. The sauce was light and tasty, a great complement to the creamy mozzarella. After we consumed every last, delectable bite of our food, both my brother and I leaned back and sighed, knowing full well not one more ounce could make its way to our stomachs – we were stuffed. The restaurant also features gluten-free recipes including pasta dishes, so no one has to miss out on the pleasures of Italian dining. And the elegant bar offers craft beer on tap, along with select wines from around the globe. The bar is a focal point along the sleek dining room, where large windows look onto the cityscape. During our next visit, the dinner menu won’t be the only one on my radar, because I’m leaving room for one of the tempting dessert selections: La Buona Vita’s Molten Chocolate Cake. It promises a warm chocolate cake with a gooey center served with vanilla ice cream and raspberry sauce. On our visit, we found the food alone was enough to warrant a return trip, but the service added to the experience. Not only was our server attentive and extremely helpful when

YEAR OF THE CHAMPION

Titles for McNamara, Montini highlight 2014 achievements

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com With 2015 in its early stages, there is no batter time to take one last look back on the successes Glenbard East, Montini and Willowbrook student athletes had last year in a slew of sports during the 2014 calendar year.

There’s no magic formula, there’s no magic play. It all comes down to execution and getting it done.” Peterkin averaged 11 points per game in his two tournament games. Mike Finley led the Rams in scoring for the duration of the tournament with 11.5 points per game. Bryce Roberts led the Rams in scoring the last two games and averaged double figures for the tournament. On the bright side, the Rams are competing well on the boards and are showing improvement on defense. “Defensively I thought we did a good job,” Miller said. “I thought we played with energy. We just didn’t execute and we didn’t shoot the ball very well.” Erica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com The Rams return to action on Jan. 9 at home in an Glenbard East’s Ryan Lumpkin goes up for a shot Dec. 11 in a home Upstate Eight Valley game game against West Aurora. The Rams wrapped up play at York’s Jack against Metea Valley. Tosh tournament with a 1-3 record.

LOMBARD – It had been more than a decade since the Montini girls basketball team lost back-to-back games. The Broncos ended a nearly unbelievable streak with losses against Benet and Marian Catholic at the Montini Christmas Tournament. That doesn’t mean the sky is falling on the powerhouse program. Benet is undefeated and won the tournament title and Marian Catholic has made state in Class 4A the past two years. On top of that, Montini’s leading scorer, junior sharp-

shooter Kaylee Bambule, suffered an injury in the second-round win against Huntley and missed both the 58-42 semifinal loss to Benet and the 60-55 overtime defeat against Marian in the thirdplace game. “It hasn’t happened to us since 2004,” coach Jason Nichols said of losing consecutive games. “We have some young kids and we don’t know how to close games, and then the other thing is we have opportunities during the course of a game that we lack a sense of urgency that they don’t think means much and then comes back to bite us in the butt.” Bambule had to watch the

Broncos’ last two games on crutches, but is expected to miss only two more weeks with a bone bruise. “There was no tear in the MRI,” Nichols said. “Bone bruises are tough, a lot of pain, but it could have been a lot worse. We need her back because it hurts our rotations.” In the Marian game, senior Rainey Kuykendall came off the bench to lead Montini with 18 points. Junior Tiara Wallace scored 11. In Bambule’s absence, the Broncos still went nine deep. Montini, which has wins against Whitney Young and Hinsdale Central and won

the Sterling Invitational before Christmas, will try to regroup with tough games against New Trier (Jan. 10), Lyons Township (Jan. 17) and Willowbrook’s McDonald’s Shootout (Jan. 19) still ahead. “We lost just to a really good team,” Nichols said of Marian. “They almost beat Trinity, so it’s not like we’re losing to garbage. It’s just we have to learn how to win. Some of that is at the end of the game and some of that is during the course of the game. The film never lies. They may think coach does, but the film won’t. We’re going to watch a ton of it as soon as we get back from our break.”

Willowbrook’s boys basketball team lost in a tournament final for the second time this season, losing to Leyden 64-53 at Glenbard West on Saturday. Alonzo Verge Jr. scored 28 points in the loss.

BOYS BASKETBALL Montini The Broncos went 0-4 at Glenbard West’s holiday tournament. Montini lost to Leyden 69-43, Hoffman Estates 4743, Glenbard North 47-27 and Northridge Prep 44-28.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Glenbard East The Rams took third out of 16 teams at the Riverside Brookfield Holiday Classic. East went 3-0 in pool play, finishing off with a 50-36 win against South Shore. In Saturday’s placement games the Rams lost to tournament host and eventual champion Riverside Brookfield 42-24 before getting past Hinsdale South 29-20 in the third place game.

Willowbrook The Warriors lost to Jacobs, Schaumburg and Glenbard North before a 55-25 win against Elgin at Wheaton North’s Bill Neibch Falcon Classic.

WRESTLING Glenbard East D’Andre Johnson made the final at 285 pounds at Palatine’s Berman Holiday Wrestling Classic on Tuesday. Johnson lost to Hinsdale Central’s Matt Allen 7-4 in overtime of the final. It was Johnson’s first loss of the season. Nolan Vincent was third at 120 pounds and Nick Donovan was fifth at 106. Glenbard East was eighth overall.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS Glenbard East The Rams placed ninth out of 11 teams at Oswego’s Tumble for the Troops Varsity Invitational on Saturday with a score of 121.25.

ELMHURST – For as many returning players as Glenbard East boys basketball has this season, maybe it’s easy to forget the team is still quite young. That youth is showing through in inconsistent play so far this season. Most recently the Rams finished the Jack Tosh Holiday Tournament at York and went 1-3. The Rams lost their first three games before beating Ridgewood 65-55 in the tournament finale on Tuesday. East lost to Naperville North 45-36, Downers Grove South 56-43 and Stagg 64-62 in overtime. Coach Scott Miller has seen his team, which has a 6-8 record, show improvement in some ways, but not in all facets of the game. “I think at times defensively and rebounding we’re better than we were and we just got to keep working on ways to put the ball in the basket,” Miller said. The Rams’ lack of scoring was hampered by the fact that junior Patrick Peterkin missed the first two games of the tournament. Peterkin returned from his six-game absence in Monday’s game against Stagg and scored 13 points. In the first-round loss
