Addison provides holiday happiness SPONSORED BY -
By C.R. Walker Many in Addison have helped ensure that those less fortunate enjoy happy holidays. Walmart, located at 1050 N. Rohlwing Rd., provided a $3,000 grant for the “Shop with a Hero” program. It was divided evenly to the Addison police department and Addison fire protection district to shop for 55 children. Each of the children were awarded a $50 Walmart gift card. They were then assisted while shopping by volunteers from the community emergency response team, police explorers, village employees and social services staff. Santa even made a special visit afterward. The program was also rewarding for firefighters and police officers, as they were able to take a break from fighting fires and crime to spend some special time helping area kids have a Merry Christmas. “Here at Addison Walmart

we are very proud of what the fire and police departments are doing to make a difference in the lives of the children,” store manager Will Konrath said. “We are honored to be a part of the ‘Shop with a Hero’ program.” Earlier in December, fifth grade students from Addison District 4 schools and St. Philip the Apostle School, along with National Honor Society members and players from the varsity football team at Addison Trail High School, assisted the Addison Community Switchboard during its 44th Annual Holiday Food and Gift Program. The schools had participated in a food drive earlier this year leading up to this program and the student volunteers then helped sort these non-perishable food items. More than 275 holiday food baskets were prepared at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church. They will be distributed to many Addison families, as well as for 25 senior citizens, who are in need. The Blackhawks remembered Reif at their game Sunday night with a moment of silence and a special decal with his initials on their helmets. “We are deeply saddened by the untimely loss of one of our own family members this morning, assistant equipment manager Clint Reif,” a team statement reads. “Like all trainers and support staff within our organization, Clint was instrumental in helping our players and coaches prepare and compete both on and off the ice. Our sincerest sympathies go out to the Reif family.” Reif is survived by his wife, Kelly; three daughters, Florence, Aislynn and Colette; and a son, C.J., according to his biography on the Blackhawks’ website. Coach Joel Quenneville was emotional as he spoke about Reif’s death at the game.

By Denise Freese Chrysler’s mission with their Street & Racing Technology has always been to make the ultimate performance vehicle. A few years back, Street & Racing Technology (SRT) became its own brand, but today is back under the Dodge umbrella of brands. Street & Racing Technology, a high-performance automobile group for Chrysler/ Dodge, began as “Team Viper” to develop the Dodge Viper. The naming convention used by SRT for its models are indicative of the engine type, where “SRT” is followed by the number of engine cylinders the vehicle has, according to caranddriver.com. The Dodge Viper is the most well-known SRT vehicle; it has always been known as a high-performance, incredibly fast car. The SRT Viper holds
production car lap records at nine U.S. tracks. With a top speed of 206 mph, and 0-60 mph in the low 3-second range, this car leaves its competitors in the dust. The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, another option for speed, is considered the most powerful muscle car on the planet. Offering 707 Horsepower, slightly more than the Viper, this car will get your heart racing. The Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat is a third option for high performance; this one is described as the most powerful, quickest, and fastest sedan ever. It also boasts 707 Horsepower, reaching 1/4 mile in 11.0 seconds. If excitement is what you’re looking for in a vehicle, you don’t have to look much further than Chrysler/Dodge SRT brands.

LOMBARD – Bond was set Dec. 19 for two men accused of stealing a Salvation Army donation bucket from outside a Lombard business, according to a DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office news release. Kavin Gipson, 48, of the 5000 block of Ridge Avenue, Hillside, was charged with one count of aggravated fleeing and eluding, a Class 4 felony; and one count of misdemeanor theft. Roosevelt Huddleston, 51, of the 300 block of Morris Avenue, Bellwood, was charged with one count of Class 4 felony theft after the pair allegedly stole the bucket outside Ultra Foods and
led police on a high-speed chase in a residential area, the release stated. At about 7 p.m. Dec. 18, Gipson allegedly took the bucket while Huddleston acted as a lookout and the bell ringer was inside the store, according to the release. It is alleged the men then fled the store in a car driven by Gipson. After a chase with police, both men were caught and arrested without further incident, the release stated. Bond was set at $20,000 for Gipson and $30,000 for Huddleston, according to the release. Both men are scheduled to appear in court Tuesday in front of Judge John Kinsella.

District 88 shares its 2014 highlights As 2014 comes to an end, it’s a great time to reflect on the successes that have taken place in District 88 this year. Below are five District 88 highlights from 2014: • National recognitions: Addison Trail and Willowbrook have again been named as Top High Schools by Newsweek and as America’s Most Challenging High Schools by The Washington Post. This is the second consecutive year both schools have received both honors in the same year. The district has received COMMUNITY these honors since 2008. VOICE • College acceptance rate: Scott More than 90 percent of the Helton classes of 2014 at Addison Trail and Willowbrook were accepted to a two- or four-year college or university. Addison Trail students are attending schools in 16 states and Canada, and Willowbrook students are attending schools in 23 states and Washington, D.C. • Academic, extracurricular and athletic successes: This past spring, Willowbrook senior Tyler Rusnak received a perfect score of 36 on the ACT. In extracurricular activities, 13 Addison Trail students and 12 Willowbrook students were named as Illinois Music Education Association All-District Musicians. In athletics, Addison Trail-Willowbrook Girls Swim Team member Kelly McNamara won the Illinois High School Association Girls Swimming & Diving 100-yard butterfly. • State exam update: Earlier this month, the Illinois State Board of Education made a dramatic shift in how the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers exam will be administered for spring 2015. For this year only, Illinois will allow districts to determine which group of students will take the exam, rather than requiring a specific group to be tested. District 88 has chosen to test students enrolled in English 1 and Algebra 1 (primarily freshmen). • Staff members receive state recognition: This past fall, Addison Trail science teacher Steve Nelson and Willowbrook social worker Erik Engel received the Those Who Excel education award, hosted by the State Board of Education. Nelson received an Award of Recognition in the classroom teacher category, and Engel received an Award of Merit in the student support personnel category. The new year means the end of the first semester, and we look forward to another great semester at District 88 – filled with more student and staff successes. These accomplishments would not be possible without our stakeholders, and we truly appreciate your continued support. On behalf of District 88, I wish you and your families a safe and happy holiday season.
Scott Helton is the superintendent of DuPage High School District 88.

Balkan Bakery and Coffee Shop will open in late winter or early spring at 14 W. St. Charles Road in downtown Lombard after making several improvements and adding an outdoor dining deck in the empty lot next door.
Good luck to a new business scheduled to open late winter or early spring in downtown Lombard. Balkan Bakery and Coffee Shop will offer European pastries as well as American favorites at 14 W. St. Charles Road. We can almost smell it already. Congratulations to the village of Lombard for another successful year of blood drives. Five community blood drives in 2014 netted 648 units of blood collected. That makes a grand total of 12,075 units since the village began hosting formal blood drives in 1988. The ongoing mission to help save lives continues with the first blood drive of 2015 on Jan. 14.

Thumbs up to the Glen Oak Restaurant I Recently attended a luncheon with family at the Glen Oak Restaurant in downtown Glen Ellyn. Thanks to the recommendation of a wonderful waitress, we were treated to the best cream of mushroom soup ever. Make it a point to visit the Glen Oak on any Wednesday to enjoy this delicious repast. Thank you Glen Oak for providing a special delectable treat to our holiday luncheon celebration.
Sound Off reflects opinions, not facts I’d like to remind readers of the Sound Off column that, as the guidelines clearly state the comments “should not be taken as fact.” Several recent comments about the Glen Ellyn Park District, which all appear to be from the same person, are misleading at best and, in some cases, simply not true. For the record, a routine exit poll survey is being conducted, based on support from a majority of the board, and will cost about 10 cents per resident; it is not a “pool survey.” The proposed turf at Newton Park represents the best price negotiated by a purchasing cooperative commonly used by public agencies, and is far from “the most expensive turf option.” It has yet to be decided which features will be included. I would encourage all readers to contact the Park District, or visit their website, for accurate information.
Media needs to stop sensationalizing I certainly agree with last week’s article “Officer was doing his job.” The media needs to stop building this up and

Time to act in D-200 A recent CUSD 200 report states we have the secondlowest property taxes collected per student, second-lowest tax rate, a below average operation expense per pupil, and below the state average in per pupil spending. Congratulations BOE – right? No, these austere numbers mean we can’t compete with surrounding districts to keep and maintain great teachers and provide current technology and services for our children. Trustees vote not to hike tax levy
LINDA W. BRIEGEL
By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com
Adam Andrzejewski For The Good of Illinois founder
per year. The college also has $17 million set aside in reserves for the outcome of state pension reform, which board estimates suggest could cost the school up to $42 million. “While we strongly believe that it is in the longterm best interest of the college to continue to levy modest annual increases in the property tax levy with much reservation, the administration recommends no increase in the college’s operating levy for 2014,” board documents stated. Trustee Kathy Hamilton originally thought the board intended to approve an increase in the levy. During a
statement to the board, she said the college should spend some of its reserves before asking for an increase. “$150 million in reserves is an obscene amount,” she said. Hamilton received some flak from fellow trustees for not knowing the levy wouldn’t increase, but she said the language in the board documents regarding the levy was unclear. Before the vote, founder of Elmhurst-based watchdog group For The Good of Illinois Adam Andrzejewski held up a 36-page list of all the delinquent property taxes in the county and said during public comment that document alone was reason not to increase the levy. “They don’t have enough money to pay their property tax bills,” he said. “People in DuPage County are hurting.” College alumnus and area resident Roger Kempa said a flat tax levy was a good thing, but didn’t understand why the college had reservations about standing still, given how much it has in reserves.
College accepts audit after potential fraud By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – After the College of DuPage disclosed potential fraud at its radio station earlier in the year, the school’s Board of Trustees on Dec. 18 accepted an audit of the station. Performed by Crowe Horwath, the yearly audit looked at July 1, 2013, to June 30, 2014. The audit resulted in a clean report, which stated financial documents “present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the WDCB-FM radio station.” In the report, Crowe Horwath stated it looked for deficiencies in internal controls that could be prevented or detected and did not identify any, but acknowledged deficiencies may exist that could not be identified. Crowe Horwath also stated it would not
provide commentary on the effectiveness of internal controls. In October, the college revealed it was aware of potential fraud at the station. “The college immediately reported the matter to law enforcement officials, and the college has been cooperating fully during the investigation,” said Vice President for Marketing and Communications Joe Moore in an October statement. “The college also immediately informed its external auditors of the potential fraud.” Campus police could not provide additional specifics regarding the issue when contacted Monday. Trustee Kathy Hamilton said the audit contains no mention of the potential fraud or of corrective steps that could be taken to avoid a repetition of the situation.
“Based on this audit, as far as we know, the issues at WDCB remain. I cannot vote for this,” she said. For the fiscal year ending June 30, WDCB had operating revenues of $99,617 and operating expenses of $1.6 million, equating to an operating loss of $1.5 million. The revenues are generated by rent payments from cellphone providers for use of the college’s radio antenna tower. Nonoperating revenues totaling $1.7 million offset the operating loss. Those revenues include $570,648 in appropriations from the college, $747,493 in external donations, $256,446 in in-kind contributions, $29,475 in state grants and contracts, and $162,921 in Corporation for Public Broadcasting awards. The board approved the audit 7-1, with Hamilton casting the lone dissenting vote.

GLEN ELLYN – The College of DuPage Board of Trustees voted unanimously Dec. 18 not to institute a tax increase for 2015. The college typically requests a 4.9-percent annual increase, according to board documents. This year, the board could have requested a $1.3 million increase for construction alone. The school’s tax levy will be $83.6 million – the same as the previous year. That number includes $71.9 million for educational purposes and $11.7 million for operations and maintenance. College Treasurer Tom Glaser said there are several pending issues that could affect the school’s financial standing. According to board documents, state funding for the college could be cut by 20 percent, an estimated loss of $2.6 million. The school reduced tuition $4 per credit hour in September, costing it $2.26 million
“They don’t have enough money to pay their property tax bills. People in DuPage County are hurting.”

FREDDIE MAC
Better Housing Fundamentals Helping More Markets Stabilize MCLEAN, VA--(Marketwired - Dec 23, 2014) - Freddie Mac (OTCQB: FMCC) today released its newly updated Multi-Indicator Market Index® (MiMi®) showing the U.S. housing market continuing to stabilize as 70 of the markets tracked are now showing positive momentum, including two additional metro areas reaching their benchmark stable ranges, San Jose and Pittsburgh. News Facts: The national MiMi value stands at 74.5, indicating a weak housing market overall but showing a slight improvement (+0.12%) from September to October and a positive 3-month trend of (+0.42%). On a yearover-year basis, the U.S. housing market has improved (+4.48%). The nation’s all-time MiMi high of 122.5 was June 2006; its low was 60.3 in September 2011, when the housing market was at its weakest. Since that time, the housing market has made a 23.5 percent rebound. Thirteen of the 50 states plus the District of Columbia have MiMi values in a stable range, with North Dakota (95.9) the District of Columbia (94.1), Montana (91.2), Wyoming (91.0), and Hawaii (89.2) ranking in the top five. Eight of the 50 metro areas have MiMi values in a stable range, with San Antonio (89.9), Austin (87.0), Houston (85.3), Los Angeles (84.4) and Salt Lake City (83.1), ranking in the top five. The most improving states month-over-month were Colorado (+1.46%), Kentucky (+1.36%), Idaho (+1.09%), Maryland (+1.01%) and North Carolina (+1.00%) On a
year-over-year basis, the most improving states were Nevada (+18.95%), Illinois (+10.55%), Florida (+9.42%), Rhode Island (9.19%) and Colorado (+9.00%). The most improving metro areas month-over-month were Kansas City (+3.44), Memphis (+3.41%), Atlanta (+3.14%), Charlotte (+2.87%) and Denver (2.81%). On a year-over-year basis the most improving metro areas were Las Vegas (+23.84%), Chicago (+13.38%), Miami, (+12.50%), Denver (+12.10%) and Riverside (+12.08%). In October, 29 of the 50 states and 41 of the 50 metros were showing an improving three month trend. The same time last year, 39 states plus the District of Columbia, and 43 of the top 50 metro areas were showing an improving three month trend. Quote attributable to Freddie Mac Chief Economist Frank Nothaft: “When we look at the stability of the housing market we’ve seen a modest 0.5 percent improvement since the beginning of the year in the national index. Housing markets continue to heal across the country with those hardest hit showing the biggest improvement. Low mortgage rates have helped, but we also need better household income growth. The employment picture needs to improve more to strengthen wage growth. The good news is we’re slowly starting to see this happen in areas like Denver, San Jose, Nashville and Pittsburgh to name a few, where we’re also seeing better purchase application activity on a monthly basis.”
MiMi monitors and measures the stability of the nation’s housing market, as well as the housing markets of all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the top 50 metro markets. MiMi combines proprietary Freddie Mac data with current local market data to assess where each single-family housing market is relative to its own long-term stable range by looking at home purchase applications, payment-to-income ratios (changes in home purchasing power based on house prices, mortgage rates and household income), proportion of ontime mortgage payments in each market, and the local employment picture. The four indicators are combined to create a composite MiMi value for each market. Monthly, MiMi uses this data to show, at a glance, where each market stands relative to its own stable range of housing activity. MiMi also indicates how each market is trending, whether it is moving closer to, or further away from, its stable range. A market can fall outside its stable range by being too weak to generate enough demand for a well-balanced housing market or by overheating to an unsustainable level of activity. For more detail on MiMi see the FAQs. MiMi is released at 10 a.m. EDT monthly. The most current version can be found at FreddieMac.com/mimi. Freddie Mac was established by Congress in 1970 to provide liquidity, stability and affordability to the nation’s residential mortgage markets. Freddie Mac supports communities across the nation by providing mortgage capital to lenders. Today Freddie Mac is making home possible for one in four home borrowers and is one of the largest sources of financing for multifamily housing. Additional information is available at FreddieMac.com, Twitter @ FreddieMac and Freddie Mac’s blog FreddieMac.com/blog.

East, Montini, Willowbrook hoop for the holidays By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com It’s holiday season, which in the world of high school sports means basketball tournaments all over. Some local teams have already started tournament play, but some get started after Christmas. Here’s the outlook for boys and girls teams from Glenbard East, Montini and Willowbrook:
BOYS Glenbard East Tournament: Jack Tosh Holiday Classic Location: 355 W. St. Charles Road, Elmhurst First game: 6 p.m. today vs. Naperville North

Juniors Jack Grigat and Terrance Lakes and sophomore Mike Finley have been among the team’s key players. Junior forward Patrick Peterkin is expected to return to the lineup during the tournament after being out since Dec. 11. The Rams return to York’s Jack Tosh Holiday Classic for a second straight year and open against former DuPage Valley Conference foe Naperville North.
Montini Tournament: Glenbard West Holiday Tournament Location: 670 Crescent Ave., Glen Ellyn Next game: 4:30 p.m. today vs. Glenbard North
What to watch: The Broncos entered the Glenbard West Holiday Tournament with a winless record, hoping to get some momentum entering 2015. Montini already played Leyden and Hoffman Estates in pool play. The final pool play game is against Glenbard North at 4:30 p.m. today before
What to watch: The Rams are a newcomer to Riverside Brookfield’s 16-team field and opened with pool play games against Addison Trail and Shepard on Monday and Tuesday, winning both. The Rams finish pool play today against South Shore and will play two placement games Saturday.

What to watch: Willowbrook has a strong frontcourt led by junior Josie Zabran, the team’s leading scorer, and seniors Sam Schmidt and Alyssa Ressinger. Senior guard Micala Giammarino has stepped into a bigger role this year. The team is at Wheaton North the week of Christmas, where a deep field of teams provides a tough test. The Warriors lost to Jacobs 42-27 and Schaumburg 47-30 and have two more consolation games left.

Solid sparks Rams’ improvement Wins help Warriors team learn on the fly By DAN SANTAROMITA
dsantaromita@shawmedia.com
RIVERSIDE – The coming of age of players like Brasia Solid has sparked an improvement in Glenbard East girls basketball this season. The Rams improved to 6-5 after winning the first two pool play games at the Riverside Brookfield Holiday Classic on Monday and Tuesday. Solid led the Rams in scoring in both victories. Solid is making the transition from perimeter player to post player and the early results have been positive. She scored 19 points in a 42-24 win against Addison Trail on Monday and scored 14 more points in a 44-30 win against Shepard a day later. “We’ve been working with her underneath,” coach Don Finnie said. “This tournament is her coming out party for working underneath the basket. She’s been working outside. Now we’re pushing her inside. [Allison] Hansen, our other big girl was working inside and now she’s working outside so there’s a work in progress with both of them.” Solid said she prefers to play outside because it gives her a better view of the court, but her strong 5-foot-10 frame allows her to get good position on the inside. She showed a good touch around the bas-

post up,” Solid said. Solid has emerged as a leading scorer, but the Rams are balanced offensively. Solid was the only player to score in double figures in both games. “We’re multi-dimensional on offense,” Finnie said. “We try to mix it up and pass the ball around and have everybody try to score. “We’re making incremental steps to get better. They’re working on the little things and that’s what makes teams better.”
GLEN ELLYN – Willowbrook missed out on winning a Thanksgiving tournament but is now in position to win a holiday tournament. The Warriors won the first two pool play games at the Glenbard West Holiday Invite and are one more win, against Northridge Prep today, from the final. “It’s really exciting,” senior guard Jake Bruns said. “We didn’t get that opportunity last year. We were in the championship for our Thanksgiving tournament and we lost, so we’re pretty hungry now.” Bruns led the Warriors with 13 points in a 53-45 win against St. Francis on Tuesday. Alonzo Verge Jr., playing limited minutes due to a foot injury, scored 12 points. A day earlier, Verge scored 25 points in a 58-55 victory against the host Hilltoppers. Chris Roycroft added 14 points in that game, which the Warriors trailed by five points in the fourth quarter before going on a 9-0 run to surge ahead. Willowbrook (6-4) has come a long way from last year’s twowin team, but is still learning how to close out tight games. “They realize that we can

compete with everybody,” coach Chris Perkins said. “But it’s a growing process as far as late-game situations. The older kids didn’t get a lot of experience last year, so we are learning on the fly. I told the kids, we aren’t going to blow out teams. We have to grind out wins so we have to get better and better with execution late in games.” Verge, the team’s leading scorer, and the rest of the Warriors are learning not just in experience, but in how to play with each other. “We just have to be more consistent,” Verge said. “We have to get more chemistry with each other, and we are doing that as we go along this season.”
