Gov. Bruce Rauner speaks Sunday to residents, officials and Lombard Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry members about how he plans to “turn around Illinois” at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center. Lombard leaders in attendance said they were optimistic about Rauner’s plans. “I feel like we’re in good hands, and I know it’s going to get worse before it gets better, but I feel like we’re finally moving in a positive direction,” said Yvonne Invergo, executive director of the Lombard Area Chamber of Com-

said he’d like to see voters decide whether they want to be part of local right-to-work zones. Rauner also spoke about choice when addressing the use of uncompetitive bidding for construction projects in Illinois. “Let’s let the open market decide,” he said. “Let people bid and compete.”

LOMBARD – The village of Lombard was in the state spotlight Sunday when Gov. Bruce Rauner stopped by the Westin hotel to talk about his plans for Illinois. Rauner discussed much of what he had outlined during his State of the State address Feb. 4 in Springfield, but to an audience filled with local residents, leaders and business owners. “My No. 1 job I was told when I got elected [was] you’re the cheerleader for the village, so this is like having the Super Bowl,” Lombard Village President Keith Giagnorio said. “We’re all honored that he chose Lombard.” Rauner spoke to a crowded room about how he plans to “turn around Illinois,” from limiting regulations on businesses to cutting the state’s ties to special interest groups. He also addressed accusations he is anti-union. “I am not anti-union. I do believe you should be able to join a union or not join a union; you ought to be free to choose,” Rauner said. While Rauner said he will not advocate for Illinois to become a right-to-work state, he
great perspective to come from,” said Giagnorio, a local businessman himself. But turning around Illinois isn’t only up to the state, Giagnorio said. Steps need to be taken at the local level too. “We’re all going to have to tighten our belts, maybe not spend like we used to spend, and really look at each dollar, not only locally, but that comes from the state and the federal government,” Giagnorio said. “And we’re doing that right now already.” State Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, who previously served as a Lombard trustee, shared his thoughts on the state’s financial crisis before Rauner took the floor. “We know that we’re in a rough spot,” he said. “Our friends are moving out, whether they’re moving out to find work or moving out just to lower their cost of living.” Rather than finding ways out of the state’s financial hole, leaders have continued to dig that hole, with special interests right there with them, said Breen, adding the state needs the governor’s proposals. “Up to this point, they have just taken and taken and taken,” he said. “But now we have a new opportunity.”

D-87 considering policy change with home-devices in-class tablet learning SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA GLEN ELLYN – Glenbard Township High School District 87 is considering a policy change that would prevent students from bringing their own devices from home for in-class tablet learning. District Community Relations Coordinator Peg Mannion said the policy is being looked at for two reasons. The first is that only 6 percent of all freshmen – fewer than 200 students – are actually bringing their own devices to school. All others are going through the district’s iPad rental program. “Very few students brought their own devices,” she said. The second reason is that some of the devices being brought from home do not have updated software or meet the district’s system requirements. According to the current policy, if a student brings a tablet from home, district information technology staff cannot work on those devices to fix an issue and can only work on devices rented through the district. “There were just too many challenges in making sure they were in the same place with the rentals,” Mannion said.
What’s next? The policy will be voted on Feb. 23 at the Board of Education meeting.
“There were just too many challenges in making sure they were in the same place with the rentals.” Peg Mannion District 87 community relations coordinator If the change is approved, all students will be required to go through the district’s iPad rental program. Current freshmen with tablets that meet the district’s requirements will be grandfathered in and can bring their own device for the remainder of their time in the district. Mannion was unable to specify the amount of additional revenue the district could receive as a result of the proposed change. The district’s annual iPad rental fee is $189.

DERMATOLOGY UPDATE Presented by
Todd T. Davis, M.D. Board Certified Dermatologist
SCAR MANAGEMENT While the very mention of the word “scar” seems to imply permanence, there are a number of ways to minimize fibrous tissue deemed to be unattractive. Depending on the patient’s age and the severity and type of scar, the dermatologist may recommend any of a number of dermatological procedures to minimize scars. These include “dermabrasion,” which involves removal of the top layers of skin with a device that abrades the skin. Used to minimize small scars, minor skin surface irregularities, surgical scars, and acne scars, dermabrasion leaves healed skin looking smoother and fresher. Other available options include chemical peels, collagen injections, and laser resurfacing. In addition, there is scar-revision surgery, which involves

Luis Andedre of Homer Tree Service watches Feb. 3 as an ash tree is pushed over at Madison Meadow Park in Lombard.
Lombard is advancing in its battle against the emerald ash borer. Last week, the Park District cut down 220 trees infected with the invasive beetle, and 300 more trees are targeted for future removal. The village, meanwhile, plans to remove 1,100 ash trees within the next year. While we’re sad to see the trees go, we’re eager to enjoy the healthy replacements the village and Park District plan to plant. The drumbeat for some kind of intervention in the Robert Breuder retirement package continues unabated. State Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, introduced a plan to ban big severance packages like the $763,000 one Breuder is set to receive. State Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo, has demanded an audit of College of DuPage’s finances. The silence from Breuder and the College of DuPage board in the face of this ongoing criticism is deafening. SOUND OFF
College of DuPage board burn As if the COD board approving [Robert] Breuder’s buyout by a vote of 6-1 for the second time wasn’t enough, there at the bottom of the … page was an ad for the Waterleaf restaurant at COD, which is running in the red. Can we spell fiasco?
Name for COD building Should there be any other namesake to the COD Homeland Security Education Center? Considering the less-than-honorable shenanigans of the COD trustees and the controversy surrounding the lucrative buyout of Robert Breuder, I ask the COD trustees to please do something honorable and name the COD Homeland Security Education Center after Sgt. Robert Miller, a [Medal of Honor] recipient and native of Glen Ellyn who was killed while fighting for the very freedoms you have as you make such important severance package decisions of your less-than-honorable president!
Blame Glen Ellyn for COD fiasco So the Breuder buyout outrages the Glen Ellyn community? How very interesting, particularly since our Board of Trustees are elected by the same community. ... We knew exactly what the great majority of these people were all about when we put them in their board seats. And now we’re outraged? ... The community has exactly the COD Board of Trustees it wanted, and now the community is getting exactly what it deserves from it’s COD Board of Trustees. Glen Ellyn residents need to end their knee-jerk conservatism and automatic dismissal of concerns of the faculty, pay attention to who is seeking board of trustee seats and who may be receiving their vote.

trustees have conducted themselves. It makes me wonder … what “benefits” they were granted (by President Breuder) to award the outrageous payout to him. I’ve spoken to some friends about the mess and they seem to feel that they are helpless to “do anything to change it,” so why get upset? In a way I can understand that; however, if we all sit back and do nothing, issues such as this will continue to go “unchecked” and our taxes will continue to increase because nobody is objecting. ... There must be something that can be done to stop the outrageous payout to Breuder and also stop his name from being plastered across a building. That is a slap in the face to this community!

Pensioners beware
Illinois public pensioners beware. With the increasingly massive amount of state of Illinois dollars devoted to public pensions, soon nothing will be left to cover other essential services: social needs, public safety needs, highway needs, school needs, etc. In order for politicians to get re-elected, they have consistently granted funds they did not have to pensions. They shouldn’t have done it, but they did. The choice seems to be for those on public pensions to halt their obsession with “you promised us” and make some minor modifications or face drastic measures (like Detroit) and end up with far less in the long run. Among the alternatives that will be far more costly to everyone, including COD fails taxpayers pensioners, are state of Illinois income As a member of this community, tax increases, reorganization through taxpayer and concerned citizen, I am hor- bankruptcies or drastic cuts in essential rified at the way six [College of DuPage] services.

I’d like to know why Elmhurst is not enforcing the ordinance for people shoveling their sidewalks. I know other communities in the area, including Chicago, are enforcing this, and I know that Elmhurst enforces the maintaining your parkway in the summer; when you don’t mow it, they issue tickets. If nothing else, this would be a revenue enhancement opportunity, so I would just like to see that enforced, and if people don’t want to be good citizens, then maybe they should have to pay up.

Lombard RadioShack waits on list of closures SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Ten RadioShack stores in the western suburbs are slated for possible closure after the technology retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Feb. 5, according to a statement and information on the RadioShack website. The affected local stores are among the nearly 1,800 possible closures of RadioShack’s 4,000 company-owned U.S. locations.
RadioShack reached an agreement to sell up to 2,400 of its U.S. company-owned stores to Standard General, which plans to work with Sprint to establish a “storewithin-a-store” presence in up to 1,750 of the acquired stores, according to the website. Dealer franchise stores were not included in the bankruptcy filing or Standard General agreement, the statement said.
Carol Stream, Bloomingdale experience possible measles exposure in three locations SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA CAROL STREAM – Potential exposure to measles may have occurred recently at three locations in Carol Stream and Bloomingdale. While no DuPage County cases of measles have been reported, the county health department is warning of possible exposure at the following times and locations: • Advanced Pediatrics Neonatal Medicine, 473 W. Army Trail Road, Suite 103, Bloomingdale, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Jan. 26, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 30 or 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 31. • Hand and Stone Massage and Facial Spa, 792 W. Army Trail Road, Carol Stream, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 6 or 8 a.m. to noon Feb. 7. • Customers at Jewel Osco, 750 Army Trail Road, Carol Stream, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 6. All three locations have remained open for business while working with the DuPage County Health Department to identify possible contacts, according to a health department statement. Several cases of measles have been confirmed in suburban Cook County, and health officials said it’s likely those individuals have visited other areas in northern Illinois. The health department is
urging anyone who potentially has been exposed and is showing symptoms of fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes, with or without rash, to call a health care provider. Those individuals should call ahead so the healthcare staff can take appropriate precautions.
What are measles? A highly contagious respiratory disease, measles can cause severe health complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis and death, according to health officials. Measles can spread through coughing or sneezing and can remain in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours. Symptoms include a fever that can get very high, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a rash of tiny, red spots that start at the head and spread to the rest of the body. Infected people are contagious from four days before their rash starts through four days after the rash develops. Vaccination, according to the health department, is safe and is the best protection against measles. The measles-mumps-rubella shot is required for all Illinois school children More information is available at dupagehealth.org.

BROOKFIELD – Directly across from the Metra rail crossing, on the corner of Grand Boulevard and Brookfield Avenue, sits 1-year-old Fuego, a quaint respite from the everyday. In a cleverly designed building, the traditionally decorated Fuego is a cantina in the truest sense, a handy place to stop for a margarita or a cold beer and some tasty Mexican classics. My friend and I grabbed a small table by one of the expansive windows in the relaxed space accented by stone. We began our meal with a basket of light and salty chips and salsa, and an order of the Ceviche de Fuego, a chilled blend of chopped shrimp, tomatoes, onions, peppers, cilantro and lime – lots of lime. Elegantly served in a tall martini glass, the seafood dish was a refreshing and tasty start to our experience. I opted for the carnita dinner, featuring slow-roasted pork sauteed with onions to create some oh-so-yummy caramelized edges. It’s like the Mexican answer to a classic pulled pork, with complex seasonings and just enough bite. My friend ordered the chili relleno dinner, a fresh poblano pepper filled with Mexican cheeses. It was enclosed in a flaky crust, similar to a puff pastry, baked to a golden brown. But the real star was the homemade ranchero sauce. Smoky and rich, this blend of tomatoes, peppers and herbs is cooked a long time – until it turns thick, deep red and delicious. (The chef really should bottle the sauce and sell it at the bar.) And although we were stuffed, the dessert menu was calling, so we ordered the churro bites. They were decadent and sweet, fried crisp and covered in a syrupy cinnamon sugar, with warm chocolate sauce for dipping. A variety of classic Mexican favorites, from tacos to flautas, rounds out the menu at Fuego. Quench your thirst

Warriors comeback to win 12th straight game By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – Willowbrook’s boys basketball team has won a lot of close games during its winning streak, and not even conference-leading Morton could stop the Warriors. In a tense game in front of a packed gym, Willowbrook came back from as many as 14 points down to win 80-78 against the Mustangs on Feb. 6. Willowbrook sophomore Alonzo Verge Jr. scored 34 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter and a game-winning runner with 15 seconds left. It was Willowbrook’s 12th win in a row and the 18th win of the season. The Warriors haven’t won 18 games in a season since the 1973-74 season. Morton is now 6-2 in the Gold and Willowbrook is right behind at 6-3. “I’d put this up there with [beating] Proviso [East],” Willowbrook coach Chris Perkins said. “These are the two special wins of the season based off the history and tradition of their programs and especially how well Morton is playing. They’re No. 1 in the conference. We came in tonight in second place and I said ‘If you want to take that step, tonight is our opportunity.’” Morton led 26-12 in the second quarter on a Tony Haley dunk and led nearly the whole game. Willowbrook got within 35-28 at halftime as Verge had 19 points at the break. The Mustangs held off Willowbrook in the third quarter and took a nine-point lead into the fourth. A 3-pointer by Luke Belcaster to open the final quarter extended the lead to 12 before Willowbrook started its comeback.
