Wish comes true for local girl VILLA PARK – Summer Chylewski, 7, got the “royal princess treatment” when she visited Disney World in February thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Illinois. “She was in awe the entire week,” said Nicole Curry, Summer’s mother. “She got to do so much. Her favorite was the Magic Kingdom, where she got to meet so many of the characters. She also loved all the roller coasters.” Chylewski, who lives in Villa Park, has a brain tumor and is in remission. Curry said she and her daughter stayed at Give Kids the World in Kissimmee, Fla., which she described as villas specifically for Make-A-Wish families. She said they visited five theme parks on their trip, including Sea World and Universal Studios. “I don’t think I could’ve snapped enough pictures of her. She was grinning from ear to ear, just from meeting the characters to being on all the rides,” she said. The Make-A-Wish Foundation’s mission is to “grant wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.” Ryan Blackburn, marketing director at the foundation, said the organization’s goal is to “enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.” “We know that wishes have power, and families tell us that the wishes have a strong impact and can be life-changing,” Blackburn said. “Some families even say wishes can be lifesaving, even the anticipation of a wish helps kids [to be] more able to endure their treatments.” Natalie Kasak, 27, is a volunteer with the organization, and worked with Summer’s family to coordinate her trip. She said a trip to Disney World is “by far” the most popular wish granted by the organization. “We knew right off the bat when I met her that she wanted a Disney trip,” Kasak said. “She’s just crazy about Mickey Mouse. She’s a pretty normal 7-year-old. You’d never know she was sick.”

One business in Melrose Park raised more than $6,000 for MakeA-Wish to help pay for Summer’s trip. Jack Craven, owner of Craven Closeouts, said he read about another company that raised money for Make-A-Wish to sponsor a trip for a child, and he wanted to do the same. “Our culture is about giving back to the community,” he said. “Our employees made a contribution and reached out to their friends and families. Everybody gave. It was a great team effort and was very rewarding.” Cindy McKay, an employee at Craven Closeouts, said they wanted to sponsor a child in the Chicago-area so they could meet him or her. The company threw Summer and her family a “welcome-home” party Friday so they could meet her and hear about her trip. “It was a perfect party,” McKay said. “She was just so full of life and just amazing. Jasmine and Cinderella [two Disney princess characters] came to the party, and her face just lit up. It was just very special and very sweet.” Curry said Summer “had a blast”

at the party. “It was wonderful, the whole group, they’re such awesome people. It was more than I expected, and she loved seeing the princesses,” she said. Curry said the trip gave her the opportunity to give her daughter something she couldn’t have done on her own. She said the trip made them “forget about the brain tumor” for a week. “It meant a lot to her,” Curry said. “It showed her that there are people out there who are willing to do nice things for people.” Curry said Summer had been having a hard time while going through chemotherapy, and said “some kids at school weren’t so nice to her because she was different.” “Make-A-Wish just brought a smile to her face,” Curry said. “When she found out about the trip, she didn’t believe it at first. She didn’t think there was such a thing; that someone would do this for her.” Curry encouraged any family who has a child who’s going through a serious medical condition to contact MakeA-Wish and apply. “For the smile that it will bring to a child’s face. Go through the process to get your child a wish of happiness,” she said.

VILLA PARK – Three incumbents were re-elected to the Villa Park Village Board on Tuesday, according to unofficial election results. With about 28.4, 26.9 and 23.3 percent of the vote, respectively, Chris J. Aiello, Albert Bulthuis and Donald Kase will retain their four-year seats on the board, beating out challenger Bradley E. Phillips, who received about 21.4 percent of votes, preliminary numbers show.
In the race for a two-year term on the board, Nick Cuzzone Sr. was victorious with about 36 percent of the vote, compared to Catherine D. Sewell’s 33.3 percent and Diane Blair Sherlock’s 31.1 percent, according to unofficial vote totals. Cuzzone said he was very excited to
be elected, adding he had fun running for an office for the first time. His initial plans now he’s been elected include getting to know the dynamics of the Village Board and moving forward with his ideas. For example, Cuzzone said he’d like to see more development near Villa Park’s train station. That area should be the focal point of the town, as it is in many other nearby communities with train stations, he said. “I’m just really excited to get going and working,” he said.

She also felt there is an over-emphasis on Advanced Placement courses and hopes the district

One of the biggest issues facing District 44 is the possibility of changes in state funding, Ryan said. He said the district will need to look at ways to cut costs while Daniel Ryan still providing students with a quality education. Although Del Alcazar was not elected, he said he was upbeat about the results of the board race. “I’m glad that it was as close as it was,” he said.

Incumbents Sharon Kucik, Lisa Lullo and Timothy Gillen were all re-elected, with 22.9 percent, 21.5 percent and 19.6 percent of the vote, respectively, according to preliminary numbers. They will be joined by newcomer Jan Donovan, who garnered 21.2 percent of the votes. Challenger Blanca Jessen fell short of claiming one of the four open board seats with 14.8 percent. Kucik’s plans now that she’s been re-elected include continuing the course the board has been taking, with

Clean Slate candidates sweep COD race By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com GLEN ELLYN – The College of DuPage Board of Trustees will soon be looking at a Clean Slate. The trio of candidates that campaigned under the name the Clean Slate and received significant support from Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton swept Tuesday’s election. D e a n n e M a z z o c h i Charles came in the lead with Bernstein 42,903 votes, according to preliminary reports from the DuPage County Election Commission and the Will and Cook county clerks. Frank Napolitano followed with 34,011 votes. Charles Bernstein was third with 28,352 votes. All candidates will commit to six-year terms on the board. The slate won all three seats in DuPage and Will counties and two out of three in Cook County, with incumbents Nancy Svoboda and Kim Savage
pushing Bernstein into fifth place. Following the trio was former state representative Sandra Pihos with 26,966 votes. Other candidates i n c l u d e d : D a n B a i - Deanne ley, Claire Ball, David Mazzochi Carlin, Matt Gambs, Roger Kempa and Joseph Wozniak. After a long and tumultuous campaign that saw candidates field questions on topics including lack of Frank transparency with the Napolitano current board, public discontentment with college President Robert Breuder and accusations of financial wrongdoing at the school, the incoming trustees believe the taxpayers are more than ready for change. “Tonight, they gave us a clear mandate to clean up the College of Du-
Page,” said Mazzochi, Napolitano and Bernstein in a statement distributed election night. “To put an end to the attitude that has persisted there that taxpayers don’t count, and insiders rule. To finally stop the waste, fraud and abuse. To end business as usual and to truly put taxpayers, students and faculty ahead of the insider interests that have dominated this board and this school for too long.” Napolitano said the race was all about the need for reform and emphasized the election of the Clean Slate shows taxpayers are ready for something new. “The voters have spoken,” he said. “They had a choice. Although they had 12 candidates to choose from, they really only had two choices: They had a choice for reform or they had a choice for the status quo. They chose reform with all three positions they elected tonight.” Napolitano said one of the first tasks the slate will address is the need for a requested audit of state money
spent at the school, which the college’s board has yet to take action on funding. “I definitely think that we need to work to approve the state audit,” he said. “I think we need to cooperate with all the investigations going on right now.” The election was one of the most controversial in the school’s history, as the board has recently received criticism for approving a $763,000 buyout for Breuder and hiring a $250 per hour public relations firm for communications counsel. Bernstein underscored the vision of the slate at a previous forum. “Our vision is to provide our students with the skills and education to be competitive in a 21st century economy,” he said. “In order to do that, we have to stop the corruption, integrate the faculty and pay a good compensation to attract the best faculty.” Neither Mazzochi nor Bernstein responded to requests for comment on election night.

ELECTION BRIEF Newcomers win District 45 board seats, no incumbents ran The School District 45 Board of Education will soon have some fresh faces on it after three newcomers were elected Tuesday, according to unofficial poll results. Carol Klamecki led the race for three open board seats with about 27.6 percent of the vote, preliminary numbers show. She was followed by Melissa Slinn with 24.6 percent and Kimberly Taglia with 24.3 percent. Candidate Charles Wentworth garnered 23.6 percent of votes. Overall, the race was a close one. Only 20 votes separated Slinn and Taglia. Taglia edged out Wentworth with 42 votes.

LOMBARD – New building code amendments will go into effect Monday in Lombard. In order to ensure the Lombard Building Code meets the latest standards in construction technology and fire safety, the Lombard Village Board approved a series of amendments April 2, according to a village news release. The amendments are the result of extensive review by the village’s Community Development and Fire depart-
ments during the past nine months, the release stated. This effort included detailed review of other adopted regulations, ongoing discussions with property owners and the development community, and consultation with experts in the industry. The intent of the amendments is to ensure village regulations reflect trends in construction and address life/safety concerns for businesses and residents, according to the release. Key components of the code amendments include the adoption of the 2012 International Building Code, Residen-
tial Code, Fire Code, Mechanical Code, Fuel Gas Code and Property Maintenance Code, the release stated. The village also reviewed and amended several sections of local code to modify permissible construction types, such as Type 3 and 5 construction for selected projects. The amendments also provide for increased flexibility in design, according to the release. Code amendment questions should be directed to the Lombard Community Development Department at 630620-5750.

INDOOR TANNING SKIN BURNS Dermatologists have long warned the public about the dangers of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun and indoor tanning booths. Our Emergency Assistance program provides emergency funding for income eligible clients to assist with utility disconnection notices, rental assistance and prescription assistance. York Township Food Pantry, open 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday for income eligible York Township residents, is operated solely on donations; no tax dollars are used. Last year, 2,427 families consisting of 7,711 individuals were served. In 2014, the York Township Holiday “Adopt a Family” program helped 169 families with gifts for Christmas, all donated by local organizations, churches, schools, businesses and families. The York Township Youth Commission supports local youth organizations annually such as: Lombard and Elmhurst Baseball, York Center Soccer, Boy Scouts Troop 140 and TLC Camp. The York Township Senior Center provides daily activities and services for senior citizens. In our auditorium we offer movies, seminars, mature driving classes and various dancing and exercise classes. The services of a barber and beautician, income tax preparation, blood pressure checks and day trips to shows and museums also are available. We offer assistance with applications for benefit access, referral service for legal aid and Internet access in our library. Our Senior Sun newsletter is published 10 times a year to keep our seniors informed of events and activities. In 2014, our Senior Nutrition Center served 39,304 meals including hot lunches in our dining room and home delivered “Meals on Wheels” for homebound seniors. Lunchtime activities include bingo, card games, musical entertainment and nutrition education. Our Senior Transportation Program serves York Township seniors age 55 and older from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. To hear state Sens. Michael Connelly and Chris Nybo describe it, there’s a new mood in Springfield. Connelly and Nybo, who between them represent most of DuPage County in the Illinois Legislature, stopped by the Suburban Life newsroom the other day to chat about what’s going on in Springfield and their priorities for the immediate future. One of the things that stood out during the discussion was their assertion that there’s an entirely new atmosphere at the state capitol. To some degree that’s to be expected whenever there’s a change in the governor’s office – was anyone sorry to see Rod Blagojevich depart, regardless of who replaced him? – but what Connelly and Nybo described was an environment where true bipartisanship has a chance to thrive. Imagine that, in Springfield of all places. Connelly and Nybo described how Gov. Bruce Rauner has made it a habit to share meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner – with legislators of both parties, on a regular basis. Connelly mentioned he has access to the governor via text message (one imagines that’s a privilege that would be quickly revoked if it was abused) and said that’s common now, and a far cry from his previous lack of access. You don’t have to think back very far to remember dissension not only between
the parties, but within the parties in Springfield. Conflict between then-Gov. Pat Quinn and House Speaker Michael Madigan led to the watered-down pension reform law that seems likely to meet its demise in the courts. With Republicans reduced to a superminority and needing only Democratic votes to pass legislation and a Democratic governor in office, it was still excruciatingly difficult for meaningful bills to get passed. A cynic might see Rauner’s overtures and dismiss it as mere window-dressing designed to elicit responses like this very editorial. But that would be a great length to go to just to fool some newspaper editors. Plus, the recent bipartisan effort to close a $1.6 billion gap in the 2015 budget, keeping state services and programs from shutting down, certainly showed a willingness of the two parties to work together, no matter how you feel about the deal itself. It’s no surprise Connelly and Nybo, both Republicans, feel a sense of optimism now that their party controls one of the branches of state government. But the available evidence, so far, seems to support their assertion that there really is a difference in the way things are being done now. We can only hope this will continue, with the 2016 budget on the horizon and a likely need for another stab at pension reform. From here, the issues only get more difficult to tackle.

Full-day kindergarten conundrum What’s all this talk of late about full-day kindergarten all over the place? Kindergarten was never meant to be a full day. It was supposed to be an introduction to schooling for the young child. A full day is too long for the young child. What’s going to happen is the children are going to learn to hate school because they’re there too long. It seems to be that the backers of full-day kindergarten are the parents who want to work instead of being home with their children. My theory is that if you cannot afford to spend time at home with your children and just have one parent working, then maybe you shouldn’t be having children.
Not shocked by COD stories I’m not surprised with the recent onslaught of negative stories at COD. Many times as a manufacturing employer, I participated in COD Technical Center Job Fairs, Career Fairs and I walked the halls of the professors sharing my job descriptions for excellent entry level technical positions starting at more than $18 per hour. I told the professors to give me their top 10 students and they would have a job offer within a week. After numerous attempts on my part, not once did I ever receive a resume or a response from a professor. … COD has a wonderful Tech Center, but I thought the purpose of these centers was to find students jobs after they receive the skills.

Connelly, Nybo visit Suburban Life Media and discuss state budget, COD By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Although last week was all about the lead up to Tuesday’s municipal elections, a number of statewide issues continue to circle over the collective heads of local voters. State Sens. Michael Connelly, R-Lisle, and Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, visited Suburban Life Media’s office in Downers Grove on April 3 to discuss their legislative priorities, the state budget and the College of DuPage.
Rauner budget proposal One of the biggest questions in the state is its budget. A major part of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s election platform involved making tough decisions to financially stabilize Illinois. Now, the legislature, municipalities, school districts, nonprofits and other organizations that get a piece of the state pie are voicing support and concern regarding potential cutbacks. Connelly said he stood behind the governor’s efforts to rein in spending, even when they came with sacrifice. “To this governor, it’s been 12 years of mismanagement, 12 years of ‘let’s borrow here’ – it’s a big shell game in Springfield,” he said. “This is a governor from the private sector who demands results and there’s going to be no more shenanigans.” Nybo was hopeful state Democrats and Republicans could come together for a final fiscal year 2016 budget by May 31, the deadline for a deal. He said the process was only at a starting point, but added that with Rauner in of-
fice, Democratic leadership would have to consider a bipartisan solution. “They have no choice – to Michael get a budget Connelly implemented, they have to have a Republican governor eventually sign off on something,” he Chris Nybo said. The cuts from last year’s budget likely won’t make this year’s any easier, Nybo said, adding it would take an effort across Illinois to make a stable state. Connelly said the governor hopes to push several bills on workers compensation, spending guidelines and more to free up finances for strapped municipalities and organizations to offset the cuts.
Education funding and Senate Bill 1 Education has remained untouched in Rauner’s proposed budget, which includes a $25 million increase in the Early Childhood Block Grant. But suburban schools may still take a huge hit in state funding under Senate Bill 1. Numbers haven’t fully emerged on the bill – Nybo said he only got information for his district April 2 – but it is similar to 2014’s controversial Senate Bill 16. The previous bill, which died without a vote, would have reallocated funds from property-rich districts to poorer ones statewide, causing many suburban districts to lose millions.
Senate Bill 1 has a similar formula, Nybo said, and schools in his district would still lose out on $40 million in the coming years. Connelly said he hopes for a more in-depth look at the school funding problem, particularly the disparity between Chicago schools and the rest of the state. “People want kids in Chicago, in Naperville, Edwardsville, Carbondale to receive a great public education, but they also want fairness and equity when it comes to the financing of it,” he said.
Future of the COD The senators also addressed another education issue that has taken the county and state by storm – the College of DuPage. The school has been beleaguered by spending and transparency scandals, leading Connelly and other legislators to demand change. Nybo said it was a governance issue stemming from a culture instilled by President Robert Breuder. “Dr. Breuder has created a culture where his own board … may have felt hindered in their ability to question what he was doing,” he said. “Any individual who is entrusted with such immense power and is running an organization as big as the College of DuPage needs to be approachable, needs to be transparent, needs to engage with the stakeholders.” Connelly has filed a bill asking for a state audit of the school’s state funds paid for by the college but has yet to hear an answer from school officials. During the turmoil, Nybo said, it is important to remember the college is still an asset to the county.

Francesca’s Amici in downtown Elmhurst, a destination for rustic Italian favorites, has sister restaurants in the suburbs such as La Grange, Bolingbrook and Naperville. cheesecake with passion-fruit glaze, perched on a polenta shortbread cookie. Pretty as a picture, it arrived on a plate drizzled with creme anglaise and topped with a raspberry nestled in a mint leaf. It paired well with a frothy cappuccino. It was a sweet finish to our night out. And the romantic setting, complete with a great musical soundtrack, remained conducive to conversation, no mean feat in a popular restaurant. ELMHURST – In the mood to let seasoned pros do the cooking, we decided to make our first visit to Francesca’s Amici. It inhabits a warm, sophisticated space in downtown Elmhurst near the York Theatre. The spot is part of the regional collection of Francesca’s Italian restaurants, each with its own name. Among other suburban locations are La Grange, Bolingbrook and Naperville. Guiding us in from the dark, a glowing sign reading Amici (Italian for friends) crowns the inviting bar area off the entrance. The dining room is stylish with sleek booths and banquettes, and an artistic array of sepia photographs of people and places in Italy, capped with an undulating ceiling of curving beams set off by rolled copper mesh giving off a subtle sheen. Our server made us feel instantly welcome, and we soon had a small plate of freshly grated Parmesan to accompany a carafe of herbed olive oil for dipping our bread. An appetizer of scallops (capesante) in a bed of tomato risotto hit spicy notes to complement the creamy texture of the shellfish. Vowing to leave room for dessert, my dining companion selected a pizza with sausage, mushroom and his go-to spinach. He’d never been satisfied with the standard portion of spinach, until this pizza arrived, transformed from 2-D to 3-D by a tower of wonderfully prepared greens atop the pie. “I’m in awe,” he said at first sight. The fresh spinach tasted lightly sauteed with garlic, and he kindly shared a portion with me as an added side dish for my seafood plate. I ordered the tilapia paesana, expecting the thin fish I’ve encountered at the market. Instead, a plump, wonderfully moist fillet appeared, delicately breaded and smothered with a colorful melange of shredded

As a result of Greene’s absence, libero Ben Symonds slid over to outside hitter and Jacob Cermak played as the libero. While Eboli and Nick Symonds still led the attack, Ben Symonds came up with a number of big kills in the third game. “I could not be more proud of the way that all of the guys stepped up,” coach Marci Maier said. “I have Tyler Greene, who has really been doing a nice job, but he is home with the flu. I’m fortunate to have Tyler so that we don’t have to use Ben [as a hitter] because he’s a phenomenal libero. He gave us 500-some digs, I’d hate to lose those 500-some digs from him. Tyler did a great job for us last tournament and he will be my starting outside and
Ben will go back to libero as soon as [Tyler’s] well.” Expectations are high within the Rams’ program this season and the team’s 7-0 record entering Thursday’s match against Glenbard North has backed that up so far. East heads into its own Springfest tournament this weekend. The loaded field includes fellow undefeated Glenbard West. The senior-heavy squad is a big reason for the hot start. The Symonds brothers, Cermak, Eboli, setter Andrew Hurlburt and outside hitters Bob Luchetta-Stendel and Matt Morales are all seniors in the regular rotations. Greene, a junior, is one of just five nonseniors of the 15 Rams on the roster. “We expected to be strong,” Eboli said. “We knew we were going to be a strong team. It was just a matter of putting all the pieces together to be as good as we can. It’s been a great start for us.”

Experienced group of seniors return to lead Willowbrook boys Glenbard East isn’t the only boys volleyball team in the area with a lot of seniors back. Willowbrook only graduated one senior from last year’s 15-20 squad and is off to a 2-1 start this spring. All-conference setter Tommy King, outside hitter Ryan Wakely and middle hitter Liam Atkins lead the way for the Warriors. “One of the strengths of the team is that we are returning a number of players who have varsity experience from last year,” coach Ryan Bazon said. “These players have continued to grow physically and athletically and we look to build on our season from last year. I also think that having a returning setter and leader, Tommy King, will be a great advantage to our younger guys as they move into varsity competition.” The Warriors have straight set wins against Leyden and a Proviso East and lost against Glenbard East 12-25, 15-25 on March 24.

The Long Term Control Plan consists of updates and modifications to the Village's operation and maintenance procedures for its combined sewer system, as well as public notification of combined sewer overflow (CSO) events and ongoing efforts to control pollutants that could enter the sewer system. The meeting is a requirement set forth by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) as part of the Village of Villa Park's permit to operate its Wet Weather Flow Treatment Facility (WWFTF), and the points of discussion will be used to update the Village's Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Operation and Maintenance and Pollution Prevention Plan, previously issued and approved by the IEPA in 1998.
