ON THE COVER Villa Park Public Library Youth Services librarian and school liaison Nancy Gergets experiments Tuesday with one of nine science kits that will be available for checkout at the library. Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com
VILLA PARK – Villa Park Public Library’s younger patrons will be able to bring the fun of science experiments home, thanks to a grant that will provide circulating science kits. The library received a grant March 18 from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. The $2,000 grant will allow the library to buy nine science kits, said Nancy Gergets, youth services librarian and school liaison at the library. Gergets said the library will buy kits based on three topics: electricity, structures and simple machines. She said they will offer one kit for preschoolers, one kit for elementary students and a third kit for middle-schoolers for each of the three topics. Each kit will contain both nonfiction and fiction books, as well as a DVD and other manipulatives such as Legos. Patrons can check them out for three weeks at a time. Gergets said the kits fulfill a need in the community for more exposure to the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) fields. “There are a lot of projects kids like that are expensive for many families,” she said. “Having these things available for checkout helps even the playing field. We picked a wide variety [of items for the kits].” Gergets said there’s been an increase in the “STEM movement” in many schools, and she believes having these kits available to students will enhance the schools’ science curriculum,

although she said she did not receive input from the teachers when deciding what to buy for the kits. “Teachers have said they’re very excited and interested in the kits, and are willing to promote them,” she said. “Everyone sees lots of jobs in the future in STEM fields. There’s a push in many school systems to develop more programs in math, science and engineering.” This isn’t the library’s first foray into the science field. They’ve been offering “Creative Science” classes for children for many years, Gergets said. “We cover a variety of topics, and they’re all hand-on experiments,” she said. “It’s always something different. This summer we’ll do a program about sound and another one will be all experiments with candy.” Mona Polanek, youth services assistant, leads several of the classes. She said the classes are important because kids don’t often do science every day, and believes the library’s program is a good supplement. “The kids love it, the get very excited because they love to make things,” Polanek said. “Recently we made ice cream, which was a big hit. We’ve also made terrariums where we talk-

Vote for Brad Phillips in Villa Park believer in just doing what is logically To the editor: I have known Brad Phillips for about 15 years, and he is exactly the kind of representative we all want speaking on our behalf concerning the taxes we pay and the services they provide. As a fireman and union official, Phillips has spent his entire life helping others. He isn’t a slick political insider, trying to distract taxpayers with flash and flair. And he is not a die-hard idealist, willing to ignore corruption and trade away revenue to champion a single issue at the expense of all others. Phillips truly dedicates himself to the best interests of those he represents. What most take for granted, Phillips takes as a personal responsibility. He won’t be bought off, and he won’t be intimidated. Phillips is a true
ed about botany, and we did a unit on germs.” Polanek said the grant money will help the library continue to offer quality science classes. “We do as much as we can but we don’t have a lot of money to do it,” she said. “Most of the programs are done on a dime, spending only about $10 to $20 a class.” Norm Phoenix, manager of grant distribution at the IEEP Chicago section, presented the library with the check at one of its Creative Science classes. He said he was very impressed with library’s ability to “work with simple, low-cost materials for the experiments.” “As they told me, to be given a grant of $2,000 – compared to what they’ve been working with – is like winning the lottery for them. Now they can get more experiments to circulate as well as more materials to use in the science program,” he said. Phoenix said the committee was looking for libraries that would have kits that could be circulated, that have a consistent theme, and were of interest to the patrons. He said the Villa Park library had one of the better applications. Gergets said she applied for the grant last fall, and the library was notified that they won in January. “We picked a wide variety of topics and showed how we’re tying it to the schools’ curriculum and that showed we thought this through. We wanted to appeal to a wide age range because it’s so important to get the younger kids involved in science,” she said.
and morally right by the people he represents. When you go into the voting booth April 7, to vote against all of the politicians that have squandered your tax dollars and misused their power, make sure you cast a vote for a genuinely good guy that actually wants to put a stop to political insider nonsense. Phillips genuinely believes the people of Villa Park deserve better, and all he is asking is that the people of Villa Park believe in him. Vote for Brad Phillips for Villa Park trustee April 7. LOMBARD – The Victorian Cottage in Lombard had some special guests Wednesday, as the Lombard Historical Society hosted a group of Civil War re-enactors in anticipation of its annual re-enactment in July. Civil War Living History offered a sneak peek of what residents can expect from the event later this year. Members of Stanford’s Battery showed what camp life was like for soldiers in the Civil War and were available to speak with residents and answer their questions. The living history demonstration was from 2 to 6:30 p.m. on the grounds of the Victorian Cottage. Lombard’s fifth annual Civil War Reenactment will be July 24 through 26 at Four Seasons Park.

A motion for a new trial for a Villa Park man found guilty of starting the fire that killed his ex-girlfriend was denied Tuesday, said Paul Darrah, spokesman for the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office. Todd Mandoline’s sentencing is scheduled Todd April 30, now that his Mandoline motion was denied by Judge John Kinsella, Darrah said. He faces a sentence of 26 years to natural life in prison after being found guilty Jan. 20 of first-degree murder and aggravated arson charges. The jury deliberated for two hours. Mandoline was charged in connection to the July 2012 house fire in Lombard that killed 24-year-old Paula Morgan and seriously injured her friend Jason Cassidy, who suffered burns on 40 percent of his body. The fire occurred July 21, 2012, two days before Morgan’s birthday.

Duckworth to run for U.S. Senate SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., announced Monday she will run for the U.S. Senate, throwing her name into the Democratic primary in hopes of challenging current Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., for his seat. In a video message to supporters posted on her campaign website, Duckworth talks about her upbringing and military service and lays out her vision for Illinois, including growing prekindergarten programs, making college loans affordable and creating tax cuts for small businesses and the middle class. “I look forward to visiting your
community soon, and if you elect me as Illinois’ senator, I will fight my heart out to represent you with honor and integrity,” Duckworth said in the video. Duckworth, a Blackhawk helicopter pilot, served in the Army Reserve Forces for 23 years until she announced her retirement at the rank of lieutenant colonel in 2014, according to her campaign website. She served as director of the Illinois Department for Veteran Affairs from 2006 to ’09 and as an assistant secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs from 2009 to ’11. Duckworth is currently in her second term as representative of Illinois’ 8th Congressional District.

Prosecutors said Mandoline started a fight at Morgan’s birthday party because he was upset seeing her reportedly flirting with other men. Mandoline was escorted from the party after he would not calm down. He later returned to the house in the middle of the night. Testimony provided during the course of the trial described the way Mandoline took a piece of paper, lit it on fire and put it into the open gas valve of Morgan’s 2003 Acura. The car was parked close to a garage, which caught on fire. The fire spread from the garage to the house, where Morgan and Cassidy were both sleeping. Morgan died from smoke inhalation, and Cassidy had third-degree burns on nearly half of his body. Morgan’s young son was able to escape the home. Mandoline pleaded not guilty to all charges in August 2012. His trial lasted a little more than a week.

Lombard dentist takes work to Syrian refugee camp By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – Across the world, there are as many as 3.9 million registered refugees from the Syrian civil war, according to the United Nations. Many of those numbers live in refugee camps in neighboring countries, including Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq, often in squalid conditions with little to no health care or resources. The scene in the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan that Lombard dentist Samer Elbatanouny found was a dire one, he said. “It was pretty depressing, much more than what you see on television,” he said. “People are stuck in those refugee camps. They can’t go anywhere, they are denied basic human rights, living in tents … with no proper hygiene and medical treatment that was really bad – the worst I’ve seen.” Elbatanouny visited the camp from March 9 through 15 with 33 other den-

Each day, the doctors saw between 40 and 50 patients, many of whom had been waiting in line for medical attention for hours, he said. The SAMS website even warns participating doctors and nurses that they would sometimes have to work with flashlights and
makeshift equipment. Each of the patients was getting some form of urgent care that had been put off for weeks because of a lack of resources and gotten worse because of lack of education, Elbatanouny said. In contrast, he usually only sees 20 patients a day in his Lombard Smile More Dental office, who usually get seen the same day or the next when they have a problem. “They’re really leading a nomad life,” he said. “It’s hard to get any medical or dental procedures done if they need them. I heard a lot of stories of physicians treating their patients that had to see their parents die before their eyes because they didn’t have the resources to save them.” Participating physicians were asked to bring their own medical supplies. That often meant he and others could only topically treat the problems he found there. Still, patients were gracious, he said. Elbatanouny said his knowledge
of Arabic afforded him the ability to speak to some. “They were some of the most honorable people I’ve ever met, everyone was so grateful we were there,” he said. “Sometimes every tooth had an issue, and you couldn’t treat everything. … But I have not seen as much graciousness from people as I saw there.” He was originally told of the program by a friend and wanted to donate to the cause. Instead, he was convinced to actually go, including paying for his own airfare and accommodations. The experience of meeting these people, seeing their struggles and teaching local medical staff more was worth it, he said. “Everyone wants to give back in their own careers ... and we’re in far better situation than a lot of people,” he said. “You hear about this stuff on the news, hear these stories and now you have to do something. Cutting a check wasn’t enough for me. … I wanted to walk the walk.”

OUR VIEW Western Acres PR firm hire can’t obscure bad Golf Course brings FootGolf to Lombard decisions at College of DuPage Many Lombard residents may have seen teasers about FootGolf coming to Western Acres Golf Course, 2400 W. Butterfield Road, Lombard, this season. FootGolf is a combination of the popular sports of soccer and golf. The game is played on a golf course with a size 5 soccer ball. The object is very similar to golf in which the player COMMUNITY with the fewest kicks wins. VOICE The majority of golf rules are Jill followed. Players kick the ball from the tee box toward Wejman the 21-inch diameter hole, which is set apart from a golf green. Western Acres, normally a nine-hole golf course, also has become an 18-hole FootGolf course. The sport is about precision rather than power kicking and running. In fact, players rent a golf cart or walk the course, just as a golfer would. FootGolf became an official sport in the United States in November 2011 by the American FootGolf League. There are currently more than 370 FootGolf courses 47 states. The game continues to grow as more and more people learn about this new sport. Many corporations are looking for a new outing for their employees and FootGolf has become a great opportunity for team building. As with any new sport, many people are excited about a new opportunity and some may be asking questions such as, “What will happen to golf?” and “How will it impact my game?” Staff at Western Acres has decided to keep the two sports separate for the first season. Staff plans to learn ways that allow the two sports to coexist, similar to when skiers and snowboarders had to learn to share the slopes. FootGolf at Western Acres will be offered during the last tee time of the day and golf will continue to play on just as it has in other seasons. There are some exciting FootGolf events planned at Western Acres this summer, such as FootGolf Frenzy – a glow-in-the-dark tournament which will be held on August 1st. Be on the lookout for course updates and information. In the meantime, don’t let those golf clubs get rusty! The course is open for the season and tee times may be booked online at www.westernacres.com.

College of DuPage serves about 28,000 students a semester, making it the second-largest undergraduate institution in Illinois. It has more than 90 certificate and degree programs. It’s a jewel of the western suburbs, extending beyond its namesake county to serve students from Lemont to Naperville, from La Grange to Elmhurst to West Chicago, all from its campus in Glen Ellyn. That litany of good things makes the ongoing torrent of bad news from and about COD leadership all the more outrageous for those of us who live and pay taxes in the school’s district. The recent hiring of a $250-an-hour public relations firm, for instance, fits the textbook definition of irony perfectly. Spending taxpayer money to convince those same taxpayers that you didn’t waste their money is so ludicrous on its face that one wonders if the board members piled out of a clown car when they arrived at the meeting where this decision took place. “I think it’s clear that there is need for a PR firm to help the public understand what the true facts are,” board Chairwoman Erin Birt said. It seems that “true facts” about the college are emerging on an almost daily basis, and the public doesn’t seem to be having any trouble understanding them: • Carla Burkhart, a member of the College of DuPage Foundation Board of Directors, has received more than $630,000 in no-bid contracts. Her graphic design firm, Herricane Graphics, was given contracts in 2012 and 2014 for designing signage worth a total
of more than $186,000. Change orders on the contracts have hiked the total payments, according to board documents. • The Chicago Tribune, citing law enforcement and other sources, reported Monday that the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office has issued grand jury subpoenas for records relating to expenses for school administrators at Waterleaf, the restaurant on campus. The Tribune has reported COD President Robert Breuder and other administrators expensed more than $190,000 on food and drinks in the past three years at Waterleaf. • Dan Bailey, a candidate in the upcoming election for COD Board of Trustees, claimed more than $2 million was handed out to College of DuPage Foundation board members without having to submit a competitive bid. Bailey’s allegations prompted Birt to launch a “review” of the practice. This is all on top of alleged fraud at the college’s radio station, Breuder’s sweetheart deal to step down as president with an extra $762,000 in his pocket after an embarrassing email leaked, and the board’s continued dithering on whether to allow an audit of its finances. Students at the school pay $140 per credit hour. That, and taxpayers across the suburbs, in multiple counties, are paying for all of this. If you haven’t voted already, you’re going to want to weigh in. You can see what 11 of the 12 candidates have to say, both incumbents and challengers, at http://shawurl. com/1tfx. Make sure you’re informed so you can help get this great school back on course.

COD voting reminder One would hope it is not necessary to remind voters that the two members of the [College of DuPage] Board of Trustees who voted in favor of the [Robert] Breuder buyout and who are running for re-election to the board have proven themselves to be unacceptable for board membership. With their votes they made it clear it was easier for them to soak the taxpayers who are not responsible for their mismanagement than to deal with the wrath of Mr. Breuder, had he been denied what he wanted. We also need to keep this in mind when the 2017 election rolls around should two more of these alleged public servants decide to run for re-election to the board.

Republican candidates. Why are they going to throw their full financial support of the party behind these candidates and exclude those Republican candidates not so anointed. It appears DuPage has [it’s] own style of machine-style politics. … Using machine-style politics in a so-called nonpartisan election could backfire.

The 47 Republicans who signed a letter addressed to the Ayatollah of Iran are not criminally guilty of sedition – an act of inciting hostility against the government likely to cause rebellion or insurrection. They are not acting out of “hate” for the president or seeking to “undermine” him. They exercised the same First Amendment right the writer used in his or her Sound Off letter. This is a Lombard resident. I just read in the Suburban Life today that they’re thinking about putting apartments up where the DuPage Theatre used to be. My nephew lives a few houses before that in apartments. He said they are so loud when the train goes by that it’s driving him crazy. So they better think about putting sound proofing if they do put up apartments.

ADAPTING TO NEW LENSES Older adults who are getting new eyeglasses with significant increases in prescription strength should take their time getting used to their new lenses. The same recommendation holds for seniors who are making a switch from single-vision lenses to bifocals or progressive lenses. A period of adjustment is advised since new glasses may present older eyeglass wearers with images that may appear magnified or distorted at first. As a result, they may find it difficult to navigate stairs that may appear sloped, with steps that appear to be closer, further away, smaller, or larger than they actually are. If seniors experience difficulty adapting to bifocal or progressive lenses, they might want to consider getting a second pair of single-vision lenses for outdoor use. For more information about eyewear, please call SKOWRON EYE CARE. We offer the latest in frame styles and lens technology at competitive prices, and we can provide the thinnest, lightest, most smudge- and scratch-resistant lenses to fit almost any style frame you desire. Our experienced frame stylists will make sure you get the look you want, from traditional to contemporary to just plain fun. At Skowron Eye Care, our mission is your vision. P.S. If seniors experience difficulty walking up or down stairs while wearing bifocals or progressive lenses, they might want to tuck their chins into their chests in order to view the stairs through the distance vision area of their lenses.

Real Estate News Ronald McDonald House in Central DuPage County teams up with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group’s Wheaton Office Wheaton, IL – Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group’s Wheaton Office visited the Central DuPage County Ronald McDonald House to participate in their Meals from the Heart program. This is the second time Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group’s Wheaton office, in conjunction with the KoenigRubloff Cares Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports local initiatives, has prepared meals for residents and families staying at the Ronald McDonald House, visiting the house in both February and March of 2015.
The Meals from the Heart program was developed for families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House while their children are being treated at Central DuPage Hospital. Many of the residents live miles away from the hospital, and the Ronald McDonald House allows them to stay close to the hospital. Volunteers are able to come in on a particular date to prepare meals for the residents staying in the home. “I just want to say that the Meals from the Heart program is a fantastic program,” Vice President and Managing Broker, Ken Spengel of Berkshire Hathaway
KoenigRubloff Realty Group’s Wheaton office said. “When the idea was presented at an office meeting to see if anyone wanted to go to the house and prepare meals for the residents, the response was unanimous. We were able to have a great time cooking and laughing, then we sat down and shared a meal with the residents of the house. There aren’t enough words to describe what this program does for these people who are going through a difficult time. We will be doing it again in April. Then in June we will be grilling during the company wide week of kindness.”

Rams fall short in return to tourney final Griffins take down Glenbard East in penalty shootout By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com BRIDGEVIEW – In a return trip to Toyota Park, Glenbard East’s girls soccer team fared better in some ways than last year, but still couldn’t find the net. The Rams lost 1-0 against Lincoln-Way East in a penalty shootout in the final of the Windy City Classic tournament Monday after a scoreless match. The Griffins won 3-2 in the shootout. Glenbard East made it to last year’s final as well and lost 1-0 to Lincoln-Way North. Coach Kent Overbey was hoping the Rams could use the experience of playing on the bigger field to their advantage. “We changed our formation up, we didn’t spread the field as much and it certainly created a lot more chances this year,” Overbey said. “The problem is you have to finish those chances and we definitely did not finish those chances. I guess we’ll have to be back next year to try to win it.” Speedy junior forward Brittany Paganucci used the wider and longer Toyota Park field to her advantage, often getting open in space and bearing down on the Lincoln-Way East goal. Paganucci had multiple chances, but was unable to convert, which was a theme for the day for the whole team. “If you look at the stats, we had more chances, we just couldn’t put them away,” Overbey said. “We weren’t finishing with the proficienErica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com cy that we have been so that’s Glenbard East’s Brittany Paganucci dribbles toward the goal Monday during a game against Lincoln-Way frustrating.” East in the final of the Windy City Classic tournament. the final. They also had scored 23 goals in the six matches that started the season. Goalkeeper Sierra Dana made eight saves to preserve the regulation shutout. Defenders Maria Berrum, Corie Ewoldt, Mary Kurtz and Paige Taylor also limited the Griffins’ chances. “We’re doing good,” Berrum said of the defense. “Our two seniors from last year that were defenders left so adjusting to this has been good. Communication is good and everything else is there. “Corie was a starter last year so we’re just working together. We follow each other and back each other up.” In the shootout the Rams failed to score on their first attempt, but Dana came up with a save on the Griffins’ second attempt. Another Lincoln-Way East save gave the Griffins the lead again before a potential winning kick by Griffin senior Hanna Dolan-Cook went over the crossbar. Paganucci stepped up with a chance to tie the shootout, but Kimberly Seper came up with her third save in five tries to win the game. Despite the loss, the 5-2 Rams are optimistic about the start of the season and the chance to play in a professional stadium. “It’s always exciting because high school students never really have an opportunity like this,” Berrum said.

Outlook: The Warriors don’t have some of the prolific bats of last year, but they can rely on their pitching staff to pick up the slack. Junior Cameron Zunkel has emerged as the team’s No. 1 and proved it in an eight-inning victory against Glenbard East on Monday. Zunkel pitched a complete game, giving up two unearned runs while keeping his pitch count just under 90. Willowbrook was one game away from advancing to state in the summer tournament, with strong pitching and defense leading the way. Coach Vic Wisner is hoping that success carries over. “We had some guys who could really swing the bat last year,” Wisner said. “I got a lot of juniors, but they played a lot of games for us. We lost [Mike] Rothmund and Brian Johnson and the guys who could really hit. The guys who are playing have played before. They got plenty of at-bats and we had such a strong summer.” Junior returner Matt Pizur and Zunkel give Willowbrook two quality varsity starters in the pitching staff. Mike Petruzzi also will pitch and is the team’s leadoff hitter. Senior returners Trey Jones and Luke Schuemer will bat in the middle of the order. Sophomore Kyle Ferguson is off to a hot start with the bat with five hits in his first four games, including the winning double against Glenbard East. Willowbrook’s first three wins this spring all came in extra innings.
LBS/VPA
Outlook: The Rams have a young team on paper, but a lot of current juniors who saw playing time on varsity last year return. Among that group of returning juniors is Michael Sebby, who is the team’s No. 1 pitcher. Sebby threw seven no-hit innings against Willowbrook on Monday, but unearned runs resulted in a 3-2 loss in eight innings. Ryan Schefske, Joey Moore and Jake Heyman are also juniors who will be key for the Rams. Heyman pitched four shutout innings in an 8-1 win against Glenbard West on March 26. Moore is back as the team’s leadoff hitter and Schefske already has a pair of multihit games. Sebby said his strong start Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com is a product of the learning experience from last year. Montini second baseman Jordan Lazowski (right) throws to first while Jacob Pestel backs up the play March “Last year was eye-open- 26 in a game against Lyons Township. The first pitch has been thrown for area high school baseball teams, many of which had successful postseason runs last spring. Here’s how things are shaping up for Glenbard East, Montini and Willowbrook this season:
Montini so we’re trying to live up to some of the coaches who have been here before and try and do our part to represent the school well.”
