VILLA PARK – The Villa Park community gathered together May 25 for a ceremony at VFW Post 2801 to honor those who have died in military service. Following the presentation of the colors by Villa Park Boy Scout Troop 242, Village President Deborah Bullwinkel joined several other speakers in recognizing fallen service members. Henry Ebeling, owner and director of Steuerle Funeral Home in Villa Park, read the names of military members whose services were hosted at the funeral home in the past year. VFW Post 2801 Jr. Vice Cmdr. Jim Blankshain also read the names of post members who died in the past year. The Memorial Day Ceremony ended with the release of red, white and blue balloons over the Villa Park VFW post. The balloons were donated by Ardmore Florist in Villa Park.

St. Alexander’s to close despite enrollment push By F. AMANDA TUGADE atugade@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – St. Alexander Catholic School in Villa Park will close its doors at the end of this school year, leaving parishioners, faculty and families only until May 29 to say their final goodbyes to the nearly 90-year-old community landmark. “It’s a very concerning time,” said Edward Flavin, director of communications for the Diocese of Joliet. The school previously faced a possible closure because of low enrollment five years ago but was able to stay open through the community’s fundraising efforts. However, despite the school and parish’s efforts to increase enrollment in the past few years, the school’s numbers have fallen short, Flavin said. Before the announcement to close, 87 students were registered to attend St. Alexander’s next year, but the school needed a minimum of 113 students to stay open, he said. At the end of this

school year, the school had 103 students. “For the last six years, the enrollment goal has been 200 students, and the school has never had at any point more than 130 students in the last six years,” Flavin said. The Rev. Mark Cote, pastor of St. Alexander Catholic Church, made the final decision May 23 and announced the closing during the weekend’s Masses, Flavin said. “It was disappointing,” said John Barrett, a father of three students at St. Alexander’s. “It’s a school my wife and I felt good about sending our children to.” Barrett is just one of many parents who are looking to continue their children’s Catholic school education elsewhere. Flavin said he and the Rev. John Belmonte, superintendent of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Joliet, are aware of the sudden loss families are facing, and they will work with them to find placement in other Catholic schools. Barrett said he is planning to send

his children to St. Pius X Parish School in Lombard next fall. Marty Brown, a father of two former students at St. Alexander’s, compared the school’s closing to experiencing a death in the family. Brown, who spoke at a May 19 rally hosted by the St. Alexander’s community to show support for the school, said the rally felt like a family gathering and a vigil for a loved one. “You just have to be present. You just have to be there,” he said. To begin the healing process, parishioners and families asked to walk through the school’s hallways one last time May 28. Other end-of-year plans include a final school Mass, awards ceremony for students and a school dance May 29, Brown said. He said the dance is the community’s way to try and rejoice in this time of sadness. “It won’t get better, but it will get easier,” he said. School Principal Glenn Purpura and Cote declined to comment.

LOMBARD – The Lombard community gathered together May 25 to remember those who have died in military service. During a Memorial Day service hosted by the Lombard Historical Commission at Lombard Cemetery, Lombard VFW Lilac Post 5815 posted colors and conducted a 21-gun rifle salute. The ceremony was followed by a tour of the gravesites of the 34 veterans honored at the cemetery who fought in the War of 1812, Civil War and World War I. The village of Lombard hosted its annual Memorial Day program earlier in the day. It featured members of the Lombard Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lombard American Legion, Lombard Historical Society and Lombard Junior Women’s Club, as well as local scouts, Glenbard East and Montini Catholic high school students, and local residents. Local police to support York Township partners with council to fight senior hunger in DuPage County Special Olympics SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The Lombard and Villa Park police departments will stake out local Dunkin’ Donuts locations May 29 to raise money for Special Olympics Illinois, according to town news releases. Lombard police officers will be atop the Dunkin’ Donuts at 1160 S. Main St. from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. for this year’s Cop on a Rooftop event. Villa Park officers will be at 1 W. St Charles Road beginning at 5 a.m. These local efforts are part of a larger event, as law enforcement personnel throughout the state will be at more than 190 Dunkin’ Donuts sites to collect donations for the Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics Illinois. Each guest who visits a Cop on a Rooftop location and makes a donation to the Torch Run will receive a free doughnut coupon. Guests donating at least $10 will re-

ceive a Law Enforcement Torch Run travel mug (while supplies last) and a coupon for a free medium coffee. U.S. 99.5 FM will broadcast live from 5 to 10 a.m. from the event in Lombard. Former White Sox player Ron Kittle and White Sox mascot South Paw also will be present. The Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run has raised more than $35 million over 29 years for Special Olympics Illinois. It is the single largest year-round fundraising vehicle for the organization. Each year, more than 3,000 officers cover 1,500 miles carrying the Flame of Hope through the streets of their hometowns and to the State Summer Games in Normal. The DuPage County Torch Run event will pass through Lombard on June 6, beginning at Main Street and Wilson Avenue and running north to Main Street and Parkside Avenue about 10:45 a.m.

Recently, I once again had the honor of participating in the March for Meals/Community Champions campaign sponsored by the Meals on Wheels Association of America. March for Meals is an annual national campaign to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on a local level. Community Champions campaign is a component of March for Meals that utilizes the involvement of local elected officials who deliver meals on one day in March to show their support for their local senior nutrition program. Through the simple action of taking time out of our busy day to help serve a nutritious lunch to seniors, elected officials demonstrate our commitment to the needs of the local elderly. The York Township Senior Nutrition Program is honored to be partners with the DuPage Senior Citizens Council in

COMMUNITY VOICE John W. Valle the fight against hunger. It is through the council’s efforts that the March for Meals/ Community Champions campaign has become such a huge success in York Township. In 2014, we served 39,304 meals, including our congregate dining center and home-delivered hot meals, frozen meals and cold-sack lunches, otherwise known as Meals on Wheels, delivered by volunteers to homebound seniors throughout York Township. Lunchtime dining center seniors enjoy the camaraderie of fellow seniors, daily bingo games, dance parties and occasional guest speakers. Homebound seniors enjoy nutritious meals they might not otherwise receive without

our program. It is important to mention that this program would not be possible without the assistance of about 16 volunteers per day. That would include a dozen drivers carrying Meals on Wheels, three people working the steam table and one or two kitchen helpers. Many volunteers are involved, some working only one or two days per week. If anyone is interested in being a part of this worthy group, you would be most welcome. Forest preserve district suspends sales of horses in DuPage County

The Louis’ Invitational Golf Outing began in 1969 with just a handful of golfers. Today, it has grown to include more than 150 participants. Held each August at Bloomingdale Golf Club, the outing is hosted by friends and family of the former Louis’ Restaurant in Addison. Proceeds from the Outing benefit the Ervin T. Bosworth ’42 and Dorothy Bosworth ’45 Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund at Elmhurst College. The scholarship supports students involved in extra-curricular activities. Ervin Bosworth was the son of the restaurant’s founder Louis Bosworth, a Hungarian immigrant who established the landmark restaurant in 1918. Since its inception in 1992, the Ervin T. Bosworth ’42 and Dorothy Bosworth ’45 Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund has awarded 54 students over $134,000 in scholarship aid. To date the Louis’ Golf Outing has raised $368,000. The total value of the Bosworth Endowed Scholarship Fund exceeds $500,000.

The fate of a pair of former DuPage County horses remains unknown, but the forest preserve district is taking steps to care for its aged equines moving forward. In a May 5 board of commissioners meeting, several attendees called the sale of a pair of longtime Kline Creek Farm horses, Buddy, 27, and Annie, 25, into question. Many asked whether the duo had been sold to “kill buyers,” who buy horses at auctions like the one Annie and Buddy were taken to in March in Topeka, Ind., and send them to slaughterhouses. “We as a board have heard their concerns,” board President Joseph Cantore said during a May 19 meeting. The district has yet to confirm the location of the two horses, district Director of Communications Susan Olafson said May 20. Cantore said he placed a moratorium on the sale of horses without board approval and directed staff to create a more holistic policy on what the district does with aging and retired horses. The board also unanimously voted to extend the policy for horses at the Danada Equestrian Center requiring anyone interested in adopting a horse go through an application procedure to apply districtwide. Robert Lahey, the district’s director of community services and education, said during the May 19 meeting the district hoped to have a policy proposal for horse retirement in the next 100 days or so. Commissioner Linda Painter said she appreciated the public comment that brought the issue to the board’s attention. “I think this is a good example that we do listen to what the concerns are of the public,” she said.

Educators bid a fond farewell for summer It’s hard to say goodbye. For a teacher, it’s that time of year. After months of pouring their knowledge, their hearts and their souls into the lives of children every day, it’s time to say goodbye. It all comes to an end. That short time they had, to make a difference, to change the world, is over. And somehow, all of us, no matter COMMUNITY how old, remember the name of that teacher who changed VOICE our lives forever. This is Anthony J. an amazing event, the love Palmisano of a teacher and the child whose dreams come true. This is the story we tell, but do we know what it is like, to say goodbye? If you’re an elementary teacher, you have the same students all day, all year. If you’re a middle school teacher, you see them every day, but you begin to see them as young adults, helping them to understand the challenges ahead and how to persevere through that life event they didn’t see coming. Some coach, some sponsor clubs and some run extra-curricular activities. They are there in the morning, they are there at night and many are there on the weekends. In the evening, they read to their own children, put them to bed and begin to work, grading papers and planning for tomorrow. Special area teachers such as music, art, band, orchestra and others teach the same students all year, every year. They watch them grow up. What is it like for them? As the summer approaches, teachers will be taking classes, working on curriculum, purchasing new classroom items (spending their own money) and planning with their colleagues to develop lessons for the next group of students who strut through the doors. This is the life of a teacher, the simple version at least, and the life of that person whose name is forever etched into our memories. To the graduates of School District 45, I wish you much success in the years to come. We will miss you and we invite you to come back. Better yet, we invite you to become a teacher. To pay it forward, we’ve had several students return as teachers. One of them just received our highest recognition as a District 45 Key Contributor. If not, remember those teachers who made the difference. Send them a note and thank them for a job well done. Tell them how they changed your life. This will ease the pain of saying goodbye to the children they loved, the ones they dreamed for and the ones they hoped would reach beyond the stars. It’s hard to say goodbye, but it’s easier to say hello.

Now’s the time to revel in nice weather, great events In the depths of January’s icy freeze, no doubt many of us wondered why anyone would choose to live in such a frozen wasteland. In February and March, the mercury slowly climbed, but still our teeth chattered and our ice scrapers were required most mornings. Even April brought its share of unexpectedly cool weather. None of that matters now. Shortsleeve weather is here, and now we remember why we wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. As this year’s Memorial Day parades and cookouts recede from view, many of us are taking stock of what to do with the rest of the nice weather stretching out ahead. Maybe a trip to somewhere interesting, a visit to distant family or even a jaunt to a foreign nation. There’s an abundance of options. While you’re making out your list, don’t forget to factor in all the great local festivals and events right in our area. As a senior citizen, a 38-year homeowner/resident of Elmhurst, and one who rides extensively the bike trails and streets in and around Elmhurst almost daily, I must respond to the writer in the last Sound Off, who opines that bikers should ride the paths only. Bikers do ride the paths extensively, but one would have to ride to know! Certainly those who wanted the paths are on them! Bike riders have a legal right to ride the roads. They are not “getting in people’s ways” any more than trucks, buses or motorcycles. I observe that speeders and texters are bigger dangers and nuisances than bikers on the streets of Elmhurst. Drivers must take care and respect bikers’ rights.

Board shifts power via policy changes and more By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com In a marathon five-hour meeting that featured divided votes on almost every issue on what became a nearly 20-item agenda, the College of DuPage Board of Trustees tackled a wide range of topics May 21.

1. Board gives itself more power The board took measures to distance itself from the college president’s office, increase self-policing and up the amount of potential control it has over the school and its administration. Trustees approved a series of changes to board policies 6-1, with Erin Birt dissenting. Many centered on placing the president’s office below the board and include: • Specifying the president’s organization and management of the college be under board direction • Mandating a minimum annual performance evaluation for the president • Requiring board approval for all procedures under the president’s oversight • Allowing board modification or revocation of those procedures • Removing the president from agenda preparation • Placing the board chairwoman in charge of maintaining closed session recordings.

2. Consent agenda axed Much of the meeting was spent talking about items that, according to the agenda, weren’t planned to be discussed. After board Vice Chairwoman Deanne Mazzochi and Secretary Frank Napolitano voiced concerns about all but two topics on the eight-item consent agenda – which is intended for items considered routine by the board that do not require a separate vote or discussion – trustees chose to vote on each item individually. Mazzochi said after the meeting she objected to the level of detail presented for

the items, calling specifically for public bidding information and program goals in each purchase proposal.

3. No long-range plan? While it wasn’t up for a vote, the agenda included an item about the college’s strategic long-range plan, aimed at creating goals and a policy direction for the school’s future. 5. Guns, guns, guns One of the items taken off the consent agenda was the purchase of $31,213.72 for 59 firearms for the Homeland Security Training Institute. Though some trustees and members of the public called the pricing into question, institute Associate Dean Thomas Brady said staff requested several “brand name” guns – 24 Colt M4 carbines and 24 Glock .40 caliber handguns – to align with what many local law enforcement officers use, as well as 11 more Smith and Wesson handguns for public use at the institute gun range. The motion passed 4-3, with Birt, Mazzochi and Napolitano against, the latter two citing spending as a concern.

Seventy-six percent of single women over 55 feel younger than their age, according a survey by retirement community homebuilder Del Webb. Seventy-four percent of respondents said they’re as happy, or happier, than they were at age 35, and nearly half (45 percent) believe their best years are yet to come. In fact, more than one in five (22 percent) say they feel more attractive than they did at 35. Highest obesity rates Recent data from the Trust for America’s Health showed that the baby boom generationis the most obese of any age group. According to the study, in 17 states more than 35 percent of boomers are obese, and in 41 states, more than 30 percent of boomers are obese. “While baby boomers are living longer these days, they may be living sicker,” said national health expert Dr. Lori Shemek. “Boomers’ attention to looks bypassed their attention to their weight’ leading to a generation that is living longer, but sicker.”

Eat more greens Something as easy as adding more greens to your diet could help slow cognitive decline and improve memory, according to new research. “With baby boomers approaching old age, there is huge public demand for lifestyle behaviors that can ward off loss of memory and other cognitive abilities with age,” said Martha Clare Morris, assistant provost for community research at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. “Our study provides evidence that eating green leafy vegetables and other foods rich in vitamin K, lutein and beta-carotene can help to keep the brain healthy to preserve functioning.” Reasons to not retire Baby boomers are changing retirement, according to a recent study by the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies. Sixty-five percent of boomers plan to work past age 65 or do not plan to retire. Slightly more than half (52 percent) plan to continue working after they retire. Given widespread savings shortfalls, it is not surprising that 62 percent of the boomers surveyed who plan to work in retirement and/or past age 65 indicate that their main reason is income or health benefits. What is surprising is that 34 percent plan to work for enjoyment, including 18 percent who want to stay involved and 16 percent who enjoy what they do.

Red Stars Roll on in 2-1 Away Win over Defending Champs Hemmings and Huerta score for Chicago in rainy Kansas City Chicago, Illinois – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars remained undefeated against defending champions FC Kansas City on Saturday, bagging a 2-1 away win in the highly-anticipated blockbuster clash of the weekend. Sofia Huerta scored in her third consecutive match and defender Taryn Hemmings had the late game-winner for the visitors in meeting that had been delayed due to inclement weather and was played in pouring rain that didn’t let up at any point during the 90 minutes. Chicago nearly conceded a goal in the 7th minute, as shot-stopper Michele Dalton breathed a sigh of relief after being pressured by Sarah Hagen and attempting a clearance that bounced off the FCKC forward and rolled just wide of the right post. The Red Stars created their first quality chance in the 32nd minute. With a defender wrestling her for the ball, Arin Gilliland managed to sprint to the by-line and send in a low cross that was touched on frame by Jen Hoy and parried wide by goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart. Chicago would get on the board mere moments later, Vanessa DiBernardo swinging in a corner kick from the right that would see the 23-yearold earn her league-leading fourth assist. The ball was met inside the penalty are by rookie Huerta, who redirected it through traffic and inside the left post courtesy of an exquisite touch with her right foot. Huerta’s fifth strike of the season sent the reigning NWSL Player of the Week to the top of the NWSL goal-scoring charts, where she is tied with Washington’s Crystal Dunn. Kansas City kept up the pressure and could have scored on either of a pair of 56th-minute cornes, the second of which saw Hagen smash the ball dangerously over the bar on a close-range volley at the far post. FCKC finally drew level in the 68th minute, Erika Tymrak sending in another corner from the left and fellow U.S. international Amy LePeilbet back-tracking to head the ball down and past surprised goalkeeper Dalton for a well-taken goal. The Red Stars showed a strong response to the equalizer, as Head Coach Rory Dames’ managed to keep their mighty opponents from taking control of the match and pushing for the lead. Instead, defender Hemmings gave Chicago all three points by nodding home the rebound following a Danielle Colaprico corner kick from the left and a header by center back Michelle Lomnicki that had been tipped against the post by netminder Barnhart. Kansas City’s only quality look in the closing stages was a Yael Averbuch rocket on a free-kick from 35 yards out, the Red Stars’ Dalton doing well to leave her feet and tip the ball over the frame. It would be the game’s final chance, as the visitors subsequently slowed down the pace and held on to a crucial victory that saw them increase their lead at the top of the NWSL standings. The Chicago Red Stars look to remain unbeaten through seven regular season games when they travel to take on current Shield holders Seattle Reign FC on Saturday, May 30. CHARLESTON – After so many close calls, Montini finally broke through in the 4x800-meter relay. The Broncos won the race at the Class 2A state finals May 23 at Eastern Illinois University. Once junior Gianna Salzbrunn crossed the finish line, winning the race by nearly three seconds with a time of 9:30.93, she collapsed to the ground and teammates Jenna Weidacher, Emma Makowski and Madeline Jamrozek immediately embraced her. “We’ve gotten second three years in a row,” said Jamrozek, a Glen Ellyn resident. “It’s my senior year and thanks to these girls we were finally able to do it.” Jamrozek, who ran the opening leg, was a part of two of those second-place teams. After Jenna Weidacher, a Lombard resident, ran the second leg, Emma Makowski (Willowbrook) burst ahead to give the Broncos a sizable lead. “This has been a dream of ours forever and I think that this year we just all came together as one and we all wanted the same goal,” Makowski said. “We all loved each other. We went into it as best friends and we came out on top because we wanted it. We had the heart and that’s how we went into it.”

Salzbrunn, a North Aurora resident who also medaled by taking fourth in the 300-meter hurdles and placed 11th in the long jump, held onto the lead as the quartet took the title. “I’ve had dreams of crossing that line,” Salzbrunn said. “It’s real. I don’t even know. It’s mind blowing.” Despite placing second in the race three straight years, the runners said they weren’t worried about the competition, but rather chasing their best time. “In the previous years we’ve been focusing on winning, but this year we focused more on doing our best,” Makowski said. “I think that took a lot of the pressure off and allowed us to do what we wanted to do.” Montini’s other state qualifier, Jasmine Woodley, was 19th in the discus and 27th in the shot put.

In the case of Glenbard East boys volleyball, the Rams were able to get the one that mattered after a pair of regular season losses to Downers Grove North. East knocked off the Trojans 25-14, 25-21 in a regional final in Lombard on May 27. In two previous meetings this season, the Trojans won 25-27, 26-24, 25-22 April 25

and 25-21, 25-23 May 14. They couldn’t make it three in a row. “I think we wanted it more,” middle hitter Adam Eboli said. “I think the whole time we were talking, we wanted DGN in the regional championship. We wanted to come back and beat them.” Eboli had a block on match point to end a late Trojan rally. Eboli finished with seven kills, two blocks and an ace. The Rams (32-5) scored 11 straight points in the first game to take a 14-4 lead and cruised the rest of the way. In the second game an 11-1 run

for East turned the tide and made it 22-15. “We were locked on their hits and they just couldn’t do anything for 11 points,” senior Bob Luchetta-Stendel said. “It was super fun. The sets were all there for us.” Next up for the Rams is a meeting with Benet in the Oswego East sectional semifinal May 29. The Rams beat the Redwings 25-16, 25-22 at Glenbard East’s Springfest tournament April 11. If the Rams keep playing as well as they did, the playoff run could last a bit longer.

“They’ve elevated their game a little bit and they’ve been here before,” coach Marci Maier said. “I have 10 seniors, so we’re an experienced team and they’re mentally tough and they came in ready to go.” Glenbard East last won a regional title in 2012. The junior nearly staked the Rams to an early lead against Downers Grove South, but her two shots early in the game were pushed wide by the keeper. South eventually scored in the second half to deal East a 1-0 defeat in a girls soccer regional final May 22. “The ball bounces your

way sometimes and bounces the other way sometimes,” Glenbard East head coach Kent Overbey said. “I thought we had better chances in the first, then they put the pressure on in the second and got on the end of one, and that’s all it takes.” The Rams (13-11-2) lost in regional championship games the previous three seasons, but this year was the first time they expected to win, especially after closing the regular season by going 6-1 and winning decisively in a regional semifinal.

“That’s probably the toughest thing for our girls today is that in our minds, we weren’t the underdog,” Overbey said. “We felt we were the favorite, and that’s how we came out and played.” After the near misses early, East kept up the attacking pressure and nearly broke through later in the half.
