WINFIELD – Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland & Northwest Indiana will open its fifth Ronald McDonald House on Sunday in Winfield, the organization announced in a news release. The new house will be located near Central DuPage Hospital. It is 19,000 square feet and will serve as a home for up to 52 family members of hospitalized children. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. at the house, which is located at
0N150 Winfield Road. The home is the first Ronald McDonald House in the west suburbs to open outside Cook County. Guests at the ceremony will include Village President Eric Spande, trustee Jack Bajor, trustee Tony Reyes, and Dave Sabathne and Patricia Haskins, of the Western DuPage Chamber of Commerce. Following the ribbon cutting, there will be a reception inside the house. Construction began in March, and the house is opening a month earlier than an-
ticipated. The original opening date was scheduled for Feb. 14. The home will include 12 private bedrooms and bathrooms for families, as well as various communal living spaces, such as a kitchen, living room, dining room, home office, den, laundry room, fitness center and play, game and TV rooms. The Cadence Health Foundation committed to raise $5 million of the $6.5 million in construction expenses, as well as another $1 million to cover the house’s operating costs for
upcoming school year, including a dual-language teacher. The district also is hoping to increase its substitute teacher pool. Candidates should bring a photo ID, college transcripts and a resume. Those seeking employment as a substitute teacher are encouraged to submit an online application in the Educator Licensure Information System prior to the event.

the first three years. Ronald McDonald House Charities generated the remaining funds to pay for construction. The house will serve mostly families affiliated with Central DuPage Hospital and the hospital’s Proton Center in Warrenville, but those who need its support from other facilities are welcome. Families are recommended for the Ronald McDonald House by hospital social workers. Residents must live more than 10 miles from where their child is receiving treatment.

They poured water on the trays to see if they could match some of the formations they found in the sand to images of the surface of Mars. Feigley said the show is a good way to get kids excited about science and to learn by having fun. “They’re fabulous,” Feigley said of the kids. “They were really into it. WINFIELD – Students at Winfield Central School will make their television debuts this weekend when they’re featured on a new educational science show. Cori Nelson, a fifth-grade teacher at Central, won a contest to have her class appear on the WTTW program “The Moochie Kalala Detectives Club.” Nelson’s students will be in the show’s first episode, which will air at 11 a.m. Sunday. “The Moochie Kalala Detectives Club” focuses on Mandy and Kyle, two children who seek to learn if there’s any truth to the wild stories their grandfather tells them. They head to Chicago museums to meet with experts and find out the facts behind each tale. The episode involving the Winfield students revolves around the story of water on Mars and features discussions with professionals at the Adler Planetarium. The segment spotlighting the Central students was filmed in December. Nelson said the kids were excited to be a part of the show. “I think because it’s a local connection for them, it adds to the excitement,” she said. Nelson said she received an email from the Museum of Science and Industry about being on the show and decided to submit an entry form. Winning classes also receive a $250 science grant. The entry form had two questions: “Why do you want to be on TV?” and “What would you do with the money?” Nelson said she had the students come up with the reasons they should be on the show. Among those reasons were their curiosity and their

5) You have ear noises. Presence of ear noises, known as tinnitus, may be indication of a hearing problem. Ear noises can consist of ringing, buzzing, hissing or thumping. Any ear noise should be evaluated for medical reasons. 6) Have a medical condition. Diabetes, heart, circulatory, thyroid problems and treatments for cancer with chemotherapy and/or radiation are conditions that may contribute to hearing problems. he prevalence of hearing loss is actually the reverse of what most people think. he majority (65%) of people that have hearing loss are under the age of 65. One out of every six baby boomers (age 50-64) have a hearing problem. Hearing problems are not conined to the elderly and are disruptive to life. If you notice any of these signs, you should have your hearing evaluated.

Heroes are needed for special needs families We need heroes! At Western DuPage Special Recreation Association, we rely on heroes in order for us to be able to serve the many families with special needs in DuPage County. These heroes aren’t wearing capes and masks. They aren’t flying through town in search of villains, but they are saving the day! COMMUNITY Who are these heroes? VOICE They are people just like you, Sandy your friends, neighbors and Gbur your family members. They are people who champion for our participants and families. We see heroes every day at the recreation association. What makes them heroes is how they support the recreation association and in turn our families. It may be through a recommendation made to a family looking to help their son or daughter make friends. It could be the cheers of encouragement given as our athletes compete on the field or in the gym. It is often a simple act of kindness shown by coming over to speak with our young adults whom are enjoying an evening of socializing. Heroes make it possible for Joey to be a part of a Special Olympics team that his family would not be able to afford without a scholarship. Once on the team, Joey is a part of something bigger than himself. He not only has teammates, but friends that embrace him for who he is. Because of heroes, Olivia can settle into camp even though she struggles with transitions. There is an iPad customized with apps specifically for her and a variety of sensory tools available to make those transitions go more smoothly. Mom and Dad finally have that elusive feeling of being at ease knowing that Olivia will have a positive experience each and every day. Right now, we need heroes whom can show their support through ticket purchases, donations, sponsorships and the magnanimous giving associated with our largest fundraising event of the year, The Black & Red Bash. Leading up to the event, we are looking for donations for our silent auction and our wine/ spirit pull. Sponsorships are appreciated because they greatly help offset the cost of the event and add to the financial success of the evening. On Feb. 28, we need you, your friends, neighbors and family members to attend and give from the heart. Your support will contribute significantly to the fulfillment of the hopes and dreams of families like Joey and Olivia’s. This is one evening we need our heroes by our side! Consider making a donation, securing a sponsorship or buying tickets to The Black & Red Bash. You too can be a hero! Learn about The Black & Red Bash and buy tickets at www.wdsra.com or 630-681-0962.

Happy birthday to West Chicago resident and World War II veteran Charles “Chuck” Scheckel, who celebrated 90 years earlier this month with a surprise party at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6791 and dozens of cards made by fifth graders in a class instructed by his neighbor, Wegner Elementary School teacher Mary Szul. Thumbs up to the first responders who rescued a beagle that started off 2015 by chasing a squirrel into a culvert pipe and got trapped New Year’s Day near North Avenue and St. Charles Road. The pup was stuck 24 hours, but crews were able to free it, and it sustained no injuries.

Water damage shuts down DuPage Children’s Museum By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com NAPERVILLE – The DuPage Children’s Museum in Naperville is closed while it cleans up and repairs damage caused by a flood last week. Museum spokeswoman Dee Dee McDevitt said a large water main on the exterior of the building burst sometime between the evening of Jan. 8 and Friday morning, causing water damage on all three levels. “[On Friday morning], the staff that comes in to turn on the water tables walked into a stream everywhere,” she said. The museum is expected to be closed for at least a couple of weeks, and all museum programs have been canceled through Feb. 8. McDevitt said the museum is not sure if the weather caused the water main break, and professionals were im-

She said her organization plans to use its connections to popularize #GivingDuPage, in part by providing sample media kits for groups on its website. County board member Bob Larsen said the effort’s organizers plan to meet with the DuPage Mayors & Managers Conference. “DuPage County is a remarkable community,” he said. “The ability to put your time to an organization and put your skills to bear is incredibly valuable, and we have so many incredible people in this county who want to do that.” By getting people involved, the county and its nonprofits can better leverage their ability to help the community. Since September, Giving DuPage has generated nearly 300 volunteer referrals through its website, Giving DuPage Board President Paul Feith said, and it hopes to hit more than 1,000 by the end of 2015. “It’s why we’re on this

While the cost of the repairs is not yet known, she said the financial implications will be significant and the museum will be reaching out for donations. The museum receives about 60 percent of its funding from donations and 40 percent from admission and program fees. “The timing [of the closing] couldn’t be worse because during January, February and March, the museum experiences a high level of traffic,” McDevitt said. However, she said the museum also is taking this opportunity with the repairs and construction needed to see if there are any improvements that can be made. “The goal is to reopen better than ever before,” she said.

Dentistry
Q: A:
I am missing a tooth in my upper jaw. My dentist is recommending I get an implant instead of a bridge. Is he right?
I most definitely agree with your dentist that an implant is the better route to go. You may feel an implant is very costly, but in the long run it will last a very long time compared to a bridge. Charise M. Petrelli DDS Statistically, bridges only last an average of 6 years, where an implant can last more than 25 years. Sometimes an implant can last a lifetime. With a bridge, you are also turning a one tooth problem into potentially a multiple tooth problem since a bridge always involves 3 or more teeth. What happens when that bridge fails? It will involve every tooth attached to that bridge. If the implant fails, which is very unlikely, it only involves the one tooth. I would highly recommend that you speak to your dentist about the implant option more and perhaps see a specialist for a (630) 942-0727 consultation. www.glenellyndentistry.com

Two Brothers brewpub worth the hunt WARRENVILLE – Two Brothers Tap House in Warrenville isn’t as showy a dining venue as its landmark Roundhouse digs in Aurora, but gives patrons a ringside seat at the actual brewery. The tasty fare complements not only Two Brothers’ extensive creations and sampling opportunities, but more than 50 additional bottled artisan brews from the U.S. and around the world. Savvy fans of the craft beer enterprise, which has been growing by hops and bounds since brothers Jim and Jason Ebel took the leap in 1996, know they can time a weekend meal with a free tour of the brewery. They’re offered at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Saturdays, and 1:30 p.m. Sundays, with no reservations needed. But added circus aside, the Tap House is an attraction in its own right. Tables, booths and high-tops dot the industrial space, whose walls sport giant, framed versions of a variety of Two Brothers’ artistic beer labels. The restaurant notes that all the meats are organic, and dishes are made from scratch. An added perk is that the kitchen serves late, which my companion and I took advantage of after a busy Saturday. Scanning the menu, I read the Brewer’s Reuben beef brisket is brined in-house for seven days and was sad to hear it had sold out earlier in the evening. But then I noticed the pulled pork, which is prepared with dry rubbed pork butt smoked over apple wood for five hours. The meat was tender and perfectly spiced in a Lexington-style vinegar sauce. It was such a generous portion that I would have liked a bit more of the coleslaw that topped it in a zesty interplay of texture and flavor. In a nice touch for the wheat intolerant, gluten-free rolls can be substituted at no extra charge. To accompany my sandwich, I almost picked the sweet potato fries, but am glad I opted for the roasted

Wildcats fall in hole, lose to Willowbrook By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com WEST CHICAGO – Over the final three quarters of Tuesday’s nonconference game, the West Chicago boys basketball team outscored Willowbrook by six points. Problem was, the Wildcats had dug themselves too big of a hole early. Outscored 20-4 over the opening eight minutes, West Chicago fell to 5-8 on the season with a 63-53 loss to Willowbrook. “You spot a team 16 points in the first quarter, it’s hard to come back,” West Chicago coach Bill Recchia said. “But

“We had the looks we needed and took the shots we wanted. Some fell and some didn’t.” The home team sliced the deficit to 12 by halftime and whittled the margin to as little as six in the fourth quarter, thanks in large part to the
long-range shooting of Quinn Ricci. The junior made five three-pointers on his way to a team-high 19 points. He also added eight rebounds. “He is capable of having that kind of game every single night,” Recchia said. Mikey Bibbs contributed 17 points, eight rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals while Tai Bibbs scored six points. Devonte Pascal had five points and five rebounds. On Jan. 10, West Chicago had returned from a 13-day layoff with a 65-50 victory over Streamwood. Mike Bibbs led all scorers with 16 points and Tai Bibbs chipped in with 12. “We played a pretty nice
basketball game [against Streamwood],” the coach said. “We did the things we needed to do. It was a nice conference win for us and got us to .500 in the conference. Now we get the second round going.” The Wildcats play host on Friday to Batavia, whom they defeated 58-56 back on Dec. 5. “They are a strong team,” Recchia said. “We beat them the first time around and they will want revenge. We need to do the little things, things that I preach over and over. The games we’ve lost, they have either been against some high quality teams or they’ve been tight where we could have won.”

In nonconference action, Wheaton North knocked off St. Francis 70-43 on Friday and then defeated Marmion 69-51 on Saturday. “We felt like we came around at the York tournament and really started putting it together,” Wheaton North coach Dave Brackmann said. “We really wanted to build on that. “I feel like we are playing better now than a month ago, and hopefully in another month we will be playing even better.” Against the Spartans on Friday night, the visitors led 18-13 after the opening eight minutes and then extended that margin to 32-21 at halftime and 57-34 after three quarters. “I have a lot of respect for St. Francis,” Brackmann said. “We came out with a lot of intensity and it was great to see us sustain that for four quarters. That is something we weren’t doing at the beginning of the year.” Nick Traversa had 16 points

We are really moving the ball and everyone is contributing. “We wanted to come out and start right where we left off and that is what we did.” St. Francis was led by the 14 points of Jason Sullivan. Mike Shaw made four 3-pointers on his way to 12 points and Gabriel Johnson added 11 points. “They shot the ball extremely well,” St. Francis coach Bob Ward said. “When you face a team that is that hot, you have to have other stuff going for you. You have to win the hustle game and be really good in rebounding and we were not good in any of those areas. “Wheaton North is good, they are physical, they run good stuff and they shoot it really well. They are a complete team and they are difficult to guard. And [Nick] Jordan is as good of a point guard as we see.” On Saturday, Wheaton North defeated Marmion 69-51
