WEST CHICAGO – As the new year nears, it’s time to revisit what made 2014 memorable. From longer kindergarten days to renovating a historic home, this year’s top stories will live on long after the ball drops next week.

HEADLINES Next week

1. House call What happened: The sale of the Wiant House closed and repairs to the interior and exterior began in May. The Wayne and Helen Fox Community Center purchased the building at 151 W. What happened: City offitrict 33 in February approved full-day kindergarten. The Board of Education decided to introduce the program in the fall of the 2014-15 school year. The change was made to provide more time for teachers to work with students and improve performance. Quote of note: “The goal

cials continued to push for the federal government to release funds to support the clean-up of sites contaminated by thorium at the old Kerr-McGee factory. In January 2009, Tronox – formerly Kerr-McGee – filed for bankruptcy and stopped cleaning the sites. No significant progress has been made since.

CORRECTIONS An obituary for former Wheaton Warrenville South teacher and coach Tom Todd published in the Dec. 18 issue of Suburban Life on Page 9 misstated the name of the school when Todd began his career in the district. He began his career at what was then Wheaton Central High School. Suburban Life regrets the error.

Costello Jewlery Co. weighs in on the

Christ on Christmas

by Joe Costello

Being a retailer is an amazing thing this time of year. One of the things that amazes me the most is how few people say “Merry Christmas” when they leave or enter our store. It’s always “Happy Holidays”, which is not a bad thing in and of itself, but here is our take. “Christmas” What is it? The celebration of the birth of “The Christ”. Jesus was born so that man may live. Who celebrates it? About 90% of Americans in some form. When do they celebrate it - all agree December 25th. How do we celebrate it? Many ways, not the least of which is exchanging gifts to the tune of about 200 billion dollars. So what’s my point? Should we call Columbus day, “founders day”, should we call Martin Luther King day, “civil rights day”, that would be a disgrace to both of these great men. Yet, the greatest man of all, God in the flesh, has had His name largely pulled from mainstream America on the day we honor him. This in and of itself is travesty enough. But what is really worse is the rest of the holiday has not changed. Millions are willing to ‘cash in on it’, but millions (most meaning no harm) have pulled His name from the occasion and replaced it with “winter” and “happy”. Not at Costello’s. MERRY CHRISTMAS! And to our Jewish friends, Happy Hanukkah. Lastly, to every soldier who is serving right now to give me the freedom to worship God, run my business in a free enterprise zone, and raise my family in freedom… THANK YOU, MERRY CHRISTMAS AND GOD KEEP YOU!

WEST CHICAGO – West Chicago residents have cast their vote for the People’s Choice Award in the 2014 Community Banner Art Project. The winning entry, “Going For It (Cycle Moon),” was created by Jennifer Ralph, an Elgin artist who operates First Star Art Studio. The 2014 project had a theme of “The (Bi)Cycle of Life” and focused on the introduction and evolution of cycling. Ralph said she’s honored by the recognition. “I was surprised because I thought the entirety of all the entries was so good,” she said. This was Ralph’s first time entering the banner contest. Ralph, who works under the artist name jrr and is a member of West Chicago’s Gallery 200, made the rough draft of the poster using a mixture of ink and chalk. The final piece was created with acrylic paint. The inspiration for the banner, which features yellow and blue spirals surrounding a man on a bicycle, came from the idea of achieving goals. “My feeling when I look at it is definitely a depiction of dreams and hopes,” Ralph said.

“Going For It (Cycle Moon),” by Elgin artist Jennifer Ralph, has been named the People’s Choice Award winner for the 2014 Community Banner Art Project in West Chicago. Ralph works with several different media, including acrylic paint, pastels, oil, water colors, colored pencils, photography, collage and more. “I really do dabble in all mediums,” she said. “It depends what I wanted to paint and what medium is going to be best for that image or that idea.” West Chicago Communications Coordinator Rosemary Mackey said Ralph’s banner

will be displayed downtown over a five-month period. Ralph’s entry had a “vibrant color palette and whimsical interpretation of the theme,” Mackey said in a news release. The city had 12 original banners that hung in West Chicago from May to September. Voters got the chance to cast ballots at Gallery 200 to pick the winner. The West Chicago Cultural Arts Commission has already announced details about the 2015 contest. For information, call the city at 630-293-2200 or see this week’s Community Voice column from Mackey on Page 10. Say what you will about the power of presents, but for most, the holidays are all about spending time with loved ones. That’s something the DuPage Convalescent Center takes seriously, as evidenced by the annual resident and family holiday party it hosted Sunday. The event has been a fixture for decades, said assistant administrator Shauna Berman, and is the talk of the residents for weeks before and after. “It’s kind of an expanded family celebration,” she said. “The residents, their roommates, their families, the staff and their families too ... these are the events [where] we all come together.” This year, the center hosted eight parties across the building, each with live music and “probably more [food] than

Deadline extended for 2015 community banner art project The West Chicago Cultural Arts Commission has announced an extension to the deadline for art submissions for the 2015 Community Banner Art Project. SOUND OFF

Sound Off reflects opinions, not facts I’d like to remind readers of the Sound Off column that, as the guidelines clearly state the comments “should not be taken as fact.” Several recent comments about the Glen Ellyn Park District, which all appear to be from the same person, are misleading at best and, in some cases, simply not true. For the record, a routine exit poll survey is being conducted, based on support from a majority of the board, and will cost about 10 cents per resident; it is not a “pool survey.” The proposed turf at Newton Park represents the best price negotiated by a purchasing cooperative commonly used by public agencies, and is far from “the most expensive turf option.” It has yet to be decided which features will be included. I would encourage all readers to contact the Park District, or visit their website, for accurate information.

Freedom of speech must be upheld I’m going to start my own protest right here, and it’s against people in the western suburbs making ignorant comments about the rights of other people. Can you imagine what kind of riots there would if people could not pass judgment on people from other ethnic and social economic backgrounds? It would make Ferguson look like Disneyland.

I certainly agree with last week’s article “Officer was doing his job.” The media needs to stop building this up and antagonizing people. U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, visits Indian Knoll Elementary School on Dec. 17. Roskam was a guest speaker at the school’s fifth-grade leadership meeting, where he discussed what it means to be a leader and the traits of a good leader.

Continued from page 9 The center also hosts a yearly adopt-a-resident program alongside the event. Each resident comes up with a list of items they want for Christmas, and the center often starts fielding calls from gift-givers in September and has to make a wait-list, Berman said. Both the communal party and gifts are generally much-needed by residents, as about 80 percent of the 360 are on some form of public aid, Berman said. Many don’t have families, or have families too far away to visit. Having a party before Christmas Day ensures as many residents as possible will be present to celebrate. “When we go into the holiday season, a lot of us still miss our real homes,” said four-year resident John McCall. “We

have the opportunity not only to have our families here, but we get to meet the other families. ... Everyone walks away with a smile.” McCall said he and his family spent a previous holiday party with his last roommate, whose family lived in another state. His daughter even brought his roommate a gift. “He wasn’t expecting anything,” McCall said. “It was really rewarding for him and for us to see his expression. A lot of our people here do that, they adopt their roommates.” Resident Edward “Skip” Meyer said he always tries to reach out to his fellow residents during the holiday party, and credited the festive spirit to the staff and volunteers. “All of the staff here is exceptional,” he said. “The way that everybody comes together here during the entire Christmas season to help out [is special].”

MiMi combines proprietary Freddie Mac data with current local market data to assess where each single-family housing market is relative to its own long-term stable range by looking at home purchase applications, payment-to-income ratios (changes in home purchasing power based on house prices, mortgage rates and household income), proportion of on-time mortgage payments in each market, and the local employment picture. The four indicators are combined to create a composite MiMi value for each market. Monthly, MiMi uses this data to show, at a glance, where each market stands relative to its own stable range of housing activity. MiMi also indicates how each market is trending, whether it is moving closer to, or further away from, its stable range. A market can fall outside its stable range by being too weak to generate enough demand for a well-balanced housing market or by overheating to an unsustainable level of activity. For more detail on MiMi see the FAQs. MiMi is released at 10 a.m. EDT monthly. The most current version can be found at FreddieMac.com/mimi.

Tigers begin holiday tournament action By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com WHEATON – In his previous nine-year stint as the Wheaton Warrenville South boys basketball head coach, Mike Healy became quite familiar with the Jack Tosh Holiday Tournament. Haley, who also is the WWS athletic director, returned to the boys basketball sidelines this winter. His Tigers will begin play Friday at the newlook tourney run by York High School, a field that has since expanded to 32 teams. “You know what, you hear that it’s a coaches tournament, that there are a lot of great coaches in it,” Healy said. “And I believe that. I have a lot of respect for the guys in there. It is five games and it’s a grind. I love it, you play good competition no matter what.” WWS will start off play with a matchup against Providence at noon Friday. The winner advances to take on either McHenry or St. Patrick in the second round. The Tigers enter with a four-game losing streak after dropping a 54-39 decision to Naperville North on Dec. 19. The opening four minutes proved to be the difference as the home team trailed 14-0 at the outset. At one point, WWS sliced the deficit to five but could not get any closer. Austin Polezoes had nine points and Josh Ruggles and Jeran Simpson each had seven. “We aren’t good enough to come out and get down 14-0,” Healy said. “I thought we scrapped, it didn’t snowball to the point where it was over. We still felt we were in the game in the third quarter and at the beginning of the fourth. “We are trying to figure things out. We are a little better than we’ve played the last couple weeks. It is easy for me to say that, we have to figure out how to get them to show that on the floor.”

Wheaton North fell in DVC play for the first time this winter Dec. 19, dropping a 47-43 decision to Naperville Central. Nick Jordan had 15 points.

West Chicago The Wildcats kicked off the DeKalb holiday tournament Monday with a 49-43 win against Belvidere. Mike Bibbs led all scorers with 23 points and Tai Bibbs contributed 10. The four-day event wraps up Friday and Saturday.

The western suburbs have sent its fair share of football players to big-time programs, and another group of college coaches are tapping the area to bolster their programs. The Pioneer League competes in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision and features several players from the area. Here’s a look at local players who had an impact in the Pioneer League this season.

Danny Leach College: Dayton High School: Downers Grove South

Position: Safety Impact: After playing in 11 games as a freshman and seven as a sophomore, Leach ascended to be the starter at free safety this fall. Appearing in all 11 contests, the junior was third with 67 total tackles, including 42 solo stops, with 2.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions and a sack.

Jack Adams College: Dayton High School: Hinsdale Central Position: Running back Impact: After redshirting a year ago, this freshman became an immediate contributor this season. Adams was second on Dayton with 234 rushing yards, averaging 4 yards per carry. His best game came against Morehead State on Oct. 18, when he gained 63 yards while scoring on a 9-yard run.

Tourney run starts Tigers’ turnaround

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

msleditorial@shawmedia.com

JENNA BRAMBORA Glenbard South Senior | Girls basketball Why Brambora was selected: Brambora led all scorers with 16 points in the Raiders 57-45 win against conference rival Riverside-Brookfield. Glenbard South guard Jenna Brambora is a major part of an experienced Raiders core as the senior is in her fourth season on the varsity. On Dec. 18, she played a key role in the team staying undefeated in the Metro Suburban Conference, scoring 11 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter in a 57-45 victory against Riverside-Brookfield. Brambora, the Wheaton Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with Wheaton Suburban Life sports reporter Scott Schmid about the win and Glenbard South’s fast start to the season.

Schmid: Knowing that winning conference is always a goal, how big was that win over R-B? Brambora: It was definitely a really big win. R-B always gives us good competition and we’ve had a rivalry for the past couple years. That was a big game for us.

Schmid: What have been the keys to the team’s fast start (9-1 over the first 10 games)? This Athlete of the Week is brought to you by

Brambora: I think we are doing a really good job of playing as a team. We are sharing the basketball and giving everyone opportunities to score and really cracking down on defense. We are a team with a lot of speed and hustle and heart. Schmid: How much of an advantage is it to have so much experience on your team? Brambora: It’s really important. It gives us an edge. We all know what we are doing and we don’t crack as easily under pressure. And if we get down, we are resilient and able to come back. We know how important the little things are.

Schmid: In what ways have you changed from being a freshman on the varsity to now? Brambora: I think I’ve become more confident and more of a leader on the court. I really looked up to all of the older girls on the team and now it’s my responsibility to be a leader for the younger kids.

NAPERVILLE – With only one returning starter, Wheaton Warrenville South’s girls basketball team figured to struggle early this season. The Tigers did just that, starting 0-7. All but two of those losses were close, including two in overtime, giving the team hope for a turnaround. That turnaround has arrived. South won four of five games before Saturday’s 42-31 loss against Providence in its final game at the Benet-Naperville North Tournament. “I’m very pleased,” South head coach Rob Kroehnke said. “We took steps, especially defensively. We’re starting to understand positioning. We’re starting to understand the effort that it takes to play great defense.” The Tigers (4-9), who advanced to the championship bracket at Benet and finished the tourney with a 3-2 record, including a 52-38 upset of Naperville North (8-5) on Friday, played great defense against favored Providence (9-4) and held a 23-20 halftime lead. But they mustered only four baskets in the second half and lost despite giving up just five points in the fourth quarter. “Unfortunately the second half we got caught where we couldn’t score,” Kroehnke said. “It was little things here and there, and unfortunately you can’t help the other team out when you shoot bad and turn it over. We’ve got to clean that up, but we’ve definitely made big improvements since the beginning of the year and we’ll continue to make them.” Senior forward Olivia Linebarger, who recently committed to NYU, led the Tigers with 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Erin Madigan added 10 points, but

This tournament shows us that we can compete, so I think when it’s all said and done we can really pull it together.” Linebarger, the only Tiger with previous starting experience, will be key to that progress. “She’s got the experience,” Kroehnke said. “She knows what these games are about and she’s got to sort of be the captain of the ship.” The Tigers will head to the State Farm Holiday Classic in Bloomington which begins Dec. 26 and ends Dec. 30. The squad opens up with Peoria Richwoods and the winner advances to play either North Lawndale or Bloomington.

Last week, WWS also defeated Lake Park 54-36 on Dec. 16 as Linebarger poured in 16 points.

West Chicago The Wildcats began the Oswego East Tournament on Monday with a 57-40 loss to Harlem. Amari Stafford had 10 points to lead the way. The event ends with games on Dec. 26 and Dec. 27.

Wheaton Academy Joining St. Francis at the Lisle Holiday Classic is Wheaton Academy, which improved to 7-3 on the season with a 59-49 win over Aurora Central Catholic on Dec. 17. Jamie Netzley had 22 points and nine rebounds and Elizabeth Melby added 12 points. The Warriors tip-off with Hinckley-Big Rock at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 26 and would see either Hampshire or Illiana Christian in the second round with a win.
