Owen Payton and his family marked the one-year anniversary May 8 of Owen receiving a heart transplant. His mother, Christina Payton, called the celebration Owen’s “heartiversary.” “We just wanted to have a relaxing and fun day for Owen to celebrate the fact that he made it through the first year because they say the first year is the hardest,” Christina said. “For us, it was a big deal because a year ago, he was in the hospital and now we’re at home with his family and friends. 4 Hastert faces federal charges, allegations of sexual misconduct By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Former U.S. Speaker of the House J. Dennis Hastert, who served as U.S. representative of the 14th Congressional District for 20 years, was charged May 28 with structuring cash withdrawals of $952,000 to evade currency reporting laws and lying to the FBI about it. He also has been accused of sexual misconduct According to the charges, the withdrawals were connected to paying an unidentified person $3.5 million as compensation for unstated “misconduct” against that person and for Hastert’s actions to be kept secret. When FBI and IRS investigators asked Hastert if he was making the cash withdrawals “to store cash because he did not feel safe with the banking system … Hastert stated: ‘Yeah … I kept the cash. That’s what I’m doing,’” the charges stated. However, Hastert was allegedly paying a man to keep secret that Hastert had sexually abused him years ago, when Hastert was a high school teacher and wrestling coach in Yorkville and the man was a student, according to media reports.

In 2014, the FBI and IRS began investigating the withdrawals. From June 2010 to April 2012, Hastert made 15 $50,000 cash withdrawals from accounts he controlled at several banks and provided the cash to the unidentified person about every six weeks, according to the charges. Federal currency reporting laws require transactions greater than $10,000 be reported. In July 2012, Hastert began withdrawing cash in increments less than $10,000 and providing $50,000 to the unidentified person at prearranged meeting places and times. Hastert made 106 cash withdrawals under $10,000 from the banks to evade currency reporting requirements, the charges state. Owen’s friends from Evergreen Elementary School in Carol Stream came to the party, which was complete with a bounce house and soccer goals set up outside. Christina said the support from the school and the families of Owen’s friends was a tremendous help and that the community raised funds to assist the Paytons before the surgery and chipped in for an Xbox for Owen’s special day last month. Additionally, the Payton family bought a tree for the celebration and

planted it in their backyard as a physical reminder of Owen’s heart donor. They plan to reach out to the donor family in the near future. Owen’s health has improved since his transplant. He no longer has protein-losing enteropathy symptoms, his energy levels have increased and his oxygen level is normal. “We just live our life day to day and we never take things for granted,” Christina said. “The small things are the big things.” The Paytons plan to continue to celebrate the success of Owen’s transplant by hosting a heartiversary event every May 8.

You hear ringing or buzzing in your ears ater exposure to noise.

You notice that you can hear people talking but you have diiculty understanding them ater exposure to noise.

You experience “fullness” in your ears ater leaving a noisy area.

Even though you may have experienced these symptoms in the past, your hearing might not always “recover”, leaving you with a permanent hearing loss. hese types

of hearing losses typically show up several years ater the noise exposure. What you can do to protect your hearing: •

With recreational activities that have loud noise levels, wear ear protection such as earplugs. Earplugs come in custom or non-custom styles. Noncustom type foam plugs are available at pharmacies and at hearing clinics. Custom ear plugs with specialized attenuation ilters are available at a hearing clinic. Limit exposure to noisy activities around the home. Children and adults using personal listening devices such as iPods, MP3 players that use earbuds should have their devices monitored for loudness levels. A key test for unsafe listening levels from earbuds or headphones is if someone is able to overhear the wearer’s music, then most likely the listening level is too loud.

Hearing loss from noise is preventable. Monitor your hearing and be aware of potentially loud noises. If you experience any of the above symptoms or have questions, call our oice.

Tourism funding makes fiscal sense for state COMMUNITY VOICE Beth Marchetti When visitors come to Illinois, they fill our hotels, meeting centers, restaurants, shops and attractions. Most importantly, they create economic impact that drives billions of dollars to the bottom line. However, this economic driver is being threatened at precisely the time when Illinois can least afford it. More than $2.5 billion in annual tax revenue is being placed at risk, as state government considers proposals to slash funding to the tourism industry by more than 22 percent. We were honored to have Gov. [Bruce] Rauner speak at an economic outlook summit in DuPage County hosted by Choose DuPage in early May. There we heard that creating a better economy for businesses and citizens of Illinois was a main priority along with balancing the budget and making significant business reforms. Local business and visitors industry leaders who were there came away believing that he recognized investing in tourism was part of the solution to revive the economy. Yet, our industry is now faced with being a victim to severe funding reductions. Since the 1980s, Illinois has been among the nation’s leaders in innovative sales and marketing efforts that have drawn more visitors to the state. We have done this by reinvesting a small portion of hotel tax revenues, money spent by visitors, to bring even more visitors to the area. In 2014, a record 107 million visitors came to Illinois, a new high for the fourth consecutive year. Those people didn’t show up by accident. They were drawn here in many ways: incentives to conventions and trade shows, advertising and marketing in the U.S. and across the globe, partnerships with local organizations, and more. Here are just a few examples of how tourism impacts DuPage County: • The DuPage Convention and Visitors Bureau has secured the country’s largest amateur bowling event for July 2015. The nationally televised USBC/Junior Gold Championships

District 94 students are driven to succeed I am so proud of our students; they constantly surprise me with how they rise to the challenge when stretched by our faculty and staff. Here are some of the many accomplishments of our amazing students from this year: • Recently, WeGo Drama students excelled at performing the rock opera “Evita.” This group of talented students placed third in sectionals for their contest play and group interpretation and placed seventh in state competition for group interpretation. Three students were awarded all-state honors. • At the Chicagoland Television Educators Council Video Festival, our broadcast production students brought home five gold awards, six silver awards and two bronze awards for their work that was judged by industry professionals. • Our LifeSmarts team earned the state championship title and at the national competition took fifth place in consumer rights. • Our Personal Finance Challenge team took the Illinois first-place title at the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago and qualified for the national competition in Kansas City. • At the SkillsUSA State competition, one of our students took first in black and white photography, and our students took first and second in courtesy corp, qualifying them for nationals in June in Kentucky. • At the Future Business

Leaders of America State Leadership Conference, our students brought home three first-place finishes and three second-place finishes. • Our speech team did well at the IHSA state competition, placing sixth in dramatic duet acting and ninth in dramatic interpretation. In our music department, one of our students was chosen for the all-state honor choir. • At the Upstate Eight Conference Literary Festival, one of our students placed first in the poetry category. • A WCCHS student was part of the Technology Center of DuPage culinary team that won the state ProStart culinary competition and went on to place 10th at the national competition in California. • On the national level, we have a student recognized as a National Merit Scholarship finalist and another student recognized as a commended student. On the state level, 37 of our students were named Illinois State Scholars this year. Again, I am extremely proud of the engagement, involvement and achievement of our students as they excel both in and out of the classroom.

Heroin’s deadly reign affects us all It’s easy to think of heroin addiction as something that happens to other people, other families. Especially if you and your children have made it through the teen years and early adulthood without coming under the thumb of addiction. But even if no one in your immediate circle had even tried heroin, it still affects you in ways that are almost impossible to see. Maybe your favorite cashier at the grocery store just isn’t there one day, and you never know why. Maybe a local business you frequent shuts down out of the blue. Maybe a friend or a colleague becomes distant for no apparent reason, no longer hosts gatherings, no longer talks with pride about what the kids are doing. Cook and DuPage counties have seen a decline in heroin-related deaths thanks to the use of Narcan to combat overdoses. From 46 deaths in 2013 to 33 last year, DuPage County is on track for about 27 this year. Cook County’s drop was less significant, from 275 in 2013 to 283 in 2014. Regardless, if those declines are because of the success of Narcan, then it means that

If your model student has a weak moment, how hard would it be to get a hold of something truly devastating? I’m not looking to incite fear or convince every parent that their child is a secret dope fiend. Far from it. The miracle is that most teens, knowing full well how they could get their hands on some truly toxic substances, choose not to do so at a time in their life when they’ve got all kinds of pressures pushing them to make bad decisions. These are just a few of the obvious ways heroin abuse continues to affect all of us.

Mowers and blowers make too much summer ruckus I just wanted to Sound Off about the sounds of lawnmowers and leaf blowers and everything that goes on in the summer to create this loud motor noise that goes on every day. I know it’s summertime. I know lawns have to be mowed and grass clippings have to be blown off, but there’s no way to sit out in your yard anymore on your deck or your patio and just enjoy the breeze and enjoy nature without this motor noise going on constantly at such loud decibels. I share the concerns expressed by [Glen Ellyn] Village Trustees and residents over the proposed Opus Group redevelopment of the Giesche Shoes property and the adjoining village parking lot, which was given to Opus as an incentive. This massive, multiuse redevelopment of the village gateway includes a five-story commercial and residential building and an adjacent 339-space parking deck. The height would range from 53 to 61 feet, which makes the building actually six stories using the 10-feet-per-story measure employed by many cities. The building will dwarf the adjoining properties and come right up to the sidewalk on Main Street. A six-story building on the hill overlooking historic Main Street should not be allowed to happen.

Red Stars Remain Unbeaten with 0-0 Draw in Seattle Seattle, Wash. – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars stayed undefeated in their first seven matches of the season courtesy of a hard-fought scoreless draw with home side and Shield holders Seattle Reign FC. Head Coach Rory Dames’ squad earned the valuable point behind disciplined team defending and a strong performance by netminder Michele Dalton, whose seven saves saw the 26-year-old earn her second shutout of the 2015 campaign. Seattle controlled possession early on and created the first promising chance in the 13th minute. Reigning league MVP Kim Little sprinted down to the byline on the left side and set up Danielle Foxhoven, whose mishit effort from inside the box found fellow attacker Merritt Mathias. The Alabama native failed to make full contact on the ball, her shot attempt being comfortably stopped by Dalton. Chicago’s Vanessa DiBernardo released a dangerous drive at the other end of the field in the 20th minute, a wicked deflection forcing goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer to leave her feet for a spectacular parry. Red Stars defender Michelle Lomnicki had her side’s best chance of the day on the ensuing DiBernardo corner from the right, as she headed the ball goalward with Kopmeyer out of the net, only to see it dramatically headed off the line by Reign FC’s Elli Reed. The home side had a pair of attempts during the remainder of the opening period, forcing solid saves from Dalton, who did well to avoid giving up rebounds.

After the break, both teams’ promising attacking efforts were well defended, as the fans had to wait until the 65th minute for another close look. Red Stars midfielder Danielle Colaprico swung in a corner kick from the left and Lomnicki got her head on the ball once more, this time seeing her close-range effort bounce just wide of the left post. Seattle nearly punished the visitors for the missed opportunity eleven minutes later, Mathias firing a rocket off the top the crossbar from a central position just outside the box. The home side would follow up with two more promising looks. First substitute Rachel Corsie’s dangerous 82nd-minute cross from the right flank was redirected just wide of the goal by the foot of a Chicago player, then forward Beverly Yanez beat netminder Dalton to the ball on the ensuing corner, just to see her header land on top of the unguarded frame. It was the final noteworthy opportunity of the match, as the Red Stars successfully fended off some furious Reign FC attacking in the final stages to hold on for a crucial point away from home. Illinois was ahead of its time 30 years ago when it recognized the need to reinvest a portion of visitor spending to continue fueling this economic engine. Yes, Illinois faces some very tough choices regarding next year’s budget, but continuing the current funding for the visitor industry, and the billions that it would mean for Illinois’ bottom line and critical spending, should not be one of them.

A bathroom must contain certain basics like a sink, toilet and bathing area, and often some extras like storage, lighting and mirrors, said interior designer Carla Aston. While repainting to make a room appear larger is one trick, the key is limiting the contrast, Aston said. “The most important idea here is not the particular color — it can be dark or light — the most important factor is not to break up the space with high contrast. To go bigger you might have to bring down some walls, said Jason Avery, owner of Avery Construction in Clearwater, Florida. “Often baths have a wall dividing the bathroom. Tear it down or just use a half wall to open up the space,” he said. Replace a shower wall or curtain with a clear, frameless glass door that will help lengthen the room, Avery said. Textured glass may ofer more privacy but also adds a visual barrier, Aston said. Clear glass is a better, more modern option. If a closet in an adjacent room backs up against the bathroom and

renovation is an option, Avery suggests “tearing out the closet and capturing the space.” Other renovations include reversing the bathroom door so it opens into the hallway rather than the bathroom, adding a pocket door, and replacing a bulky vanity with a shallow wall-hung or tower cabinet, Avery said.

Decor tricks Mirrors are well-known to enlarge a space, so go big. “Nothing makes a bathroom feel grander than a mirror that reaches to the ceiling,” Aston said. Use mirrors strategically: A mirror placed on a cabinet directly across from a window will make it appear the room has two windows in the same space, she said. Another idea is to put unused space to work by adding recessed, built-in shelving between the studs in a wall, Avery said. Open storage can be decorative and functional, while closed storage is needed for personal items. Lastly, think about the details and lighting. Trade out bulky fixtures for ones that are streamlined, and choose task lighting that gets the light exactly where you want it in a limited amount of space, Aston said.

the frozen black bean affair found in many places. It had a whole lot of mildly spicy complexity to it, but could have used more sear. I decided to go with the classic onion rings as my side this go-round, and, predictably, they were battered perfectly. Each had a uniform

amount of tasty breading with a nice crunch and plenty of welcome onion flavor. I knew I needed to sample one of the restaurant’s handspun shakes to truly tell the full story. The Nutella version was intensely chocolate and dangerously drinkable as opposed to milk shakes the

A lot of places do a decent burger, and a lot try to push the envelope of what a burger can be. If you’re going to put your burger fate in the hands of anyone, the people at Back Alley should be near the top of the list.

LA GRANGE – Grilling season is here, but consider leaving the burger production to the pros at Back Alley Burger in La Grange. The restaurant is the creation of veteran restaurateurs Mary and Christopher Spagnola of Western Springs, who first met at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco. Their training is a big part of what sets Back Alley Burger apart, and their concept has expanded to a second location in Elmhurst. The pair’s hard-rocking La Grange restaurant has a big but focused menu offering a number of different burgers featuring grass-fed and never frozen beef, plus sandwiches, chili, nitrate-free hot dogs, salads, shakes, beer and wine, all served alongside street art decor and classic rock tunes. Inventive burger toppings and a theme alone do not a quality restaurant make, but, luckily, Back Alley Burger delivers. Though my imagination was caught by the Most Insane-est Hottest Burger Ever-est, filled with such ingredients as habanero jam, fried jalapeños, Thai chili cream cheese and something called Trinidad scorpion sauce, I decided to go with the less threatening Make Shroom for Me Burger. What came out was truly delicious. The patty itself was incredibly juicy without being greasy, and the pretzel bun it came on gave just enough structure to make sure the second half of the burger wasn’t soggy. Though it could have used a bit more of the namesake mushrooms, the grilled onions on top added an appreciated bite to the sandwich. A surprise was the caliber of the sweet potato fries. So many restaurants make a tremendous burger, but serve a pile of over-salted greasy fries alongside it. These were some of the best I’ve ever had. The thin fries had an amazing crispness to them that still had a mind-boggling amount of creamy sweet potato in the middle.

Strong season ends for St. Francis soccer Spartans fall 1-0 in supersectional, finish year 11-4-1 By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com DARIEN – With neither side able to generate many scoring chances, the Class 2A Hinsdale South soccer supersectional between St. Francis and Lemont had the feel of whoever scores first wins. And that is exactly how it played out. With just less than 15 minutes left in the second half, the Indians’ Carli Bermele found the back of the net on a header off a corner kick and that goal held up in a 1-0 victory June 2. Lemont advances to the state semifinals while the Spartans’ 2015 season ended with a final record of 11-4-1. “Give them a lot of credit,” St. Francis coach Jim Winslow said. “They were very methodical and kept the pace of the game to their liking. We could never get the pace to our liking. It’s a credit to them. “And that one corner, they took advantage of. Again, it’s a credit to them, they did a good job on that set piece.” The best scoring opportunities for St. Francis came in the opening half, but shots by Erin Peck and Kendra Pasquale were both saved by Lemont goalie Michelle Jerantowski and a free kick went just over the crossbar. As has been the case for most of the season, the Spartans played with only one senior starter after losing standouts Taylor Van Thournout and Corky Hart to torn ACLs early in the campaign. “It was a challenge, but everyone on the team really stepped up,” senior Regan Kasprak said. “It’s a great

Despite finishing 20 seconds behind the rest of the field after reinjuring his hamstring early in the race, the Falcons senior still went out an all-stater with his ninthplace finish. “At the end of the day, I’m still happy that I got to the finals with a 14.38,” Connor said of his time in the preliminaries, which would have been good for second in the finals. “I’m still proud of myself. I can’t say I’m not mad, but I’m glad to have gotten here. “It’s an unbelievable feeling [coming to state]. Every year I’ve been here since sophomore year, it has gotten better and better. As much as

WHEATON – The St. Francis baseball team captured the title at its own Class 3A regional tournament with an 11-1, six-inning victory against Aurora Central Catholic on June 1. The Spartans pounded out 14 hits and scored runs in every inning. Leadoff hitter Tim Lilly set the tone, going 4 for 4 with two runs and an RBI. Foster Heise was 2 for 4 with five RBIs while Brett Whelton and Mike Beach each had two hits and an RBI. That run support was more than enough for Jason Sullivan, who yielded three hits and no earned runs while striking out five in a complete game. With the victory, St. Francis moves on to the Sycamore sectional where the squad will take on Rock Falls at 4 p.m. June 4. Belvidere North and Kaneland meet in the other sectional semifinal, and the semifinal winners will play at 11 a.m. June 6. Area products play in NCAA baseball tournament SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA A host of local players earned the opportunity to compete in the NCAA Division I tournament, beginning with regional action that wrapped up June 1. Wheaton North graduates Doug Hayes and Andrew Mamlic are a part of the University of Illinois baseball team, as is Glen Ellyn native Pat McInerney (Benet). The Illini captured their first regional championship in program history with an 8-4 victory against Wright State and will face Vanderbilt in a best of three series starting June 6. The team also reached 50 wins for the first time in program history. McInerney has appeared in 53 games, starting 49, and is hitting .291 with 10 doubles,

five home runs and 33 RBIs. Mamlic has appeared in 17 games on the mound, with a 2-0 record and has struck out 18 batters in 17 1/3 innings. Hayes has pitched in five contests and thrown five innings.

Ohio’s Colletti impresses during opening campaign Tom Colletti was a sophomore pitcher on the Ohio baseball team that went 0-2 in the regional. Transferring in from Waubonsee Community College, the right-hander appeared in 24 games on the mound with two starts. In 55 innings of work, the Wheaton North grad struck out 41 and had a record of 4-2 with two saves and an ERA of 3.60. The squad finished with a 36-21 record.

Swaney second on Wright State in innings pitched Trevor Swaney was a redshirt sophomore for Wright State this season. The former Wheaton Academy standout started 16 games on the hill and finished with a record of 4-3 and an ERA of 4.81 in 76 2/3 innings of work. He struck out 30 batters.
