Alex,hisparentsAshleyandChad Ottensandhisgrandparentswillleave onThursday,May25,foraweeklong stayinthenation’scapital.Students andstaffwillgiveasend-offtoAlexon Wednesdaybeforeheembarksonthe journeyeasttocompeteagainst the nation’stopspellers.SpellingBee sponsorMrs.EmilyHigginswillleave onSaturdaytojointhefamilyand cheerAlexon.
WhileinD.C.,whichwillbehisfirst timethere,Alexwillbestayingatthe GaylordNationalResort&ConventionCenteralongwiththeother231 finalists.Thoughhe’llbespending manyhoursinpractice,healsohas a fewdestinationsinmindtovisit,such astheBuschGardensThemePark,the National MallandtheHolocaust Museum.Thefamilyalsowillmake a stopinGettysburgwhiledriving throughPennsylvania.
Alexalsowillbepracticingand memorizingwordswhileatthehotel inpreparationforthecompetition. SincewinningtheRegionalSpelling Bee,he’sbeenpracticingaminimum ofanhoureachnightwiththehelp andsupportofhisparents.He’sbeen participatingintheSpellingBeesince sixthgradesotogetthisfarisamonu-
mentalachievement.
Academically,Alexsaidhe’sgood at mathandwritingstories,andhe likescodingandcomputerscience, evencodingafewofhisownvideo games.HisfavoritesgamesareMinecraftandRiseofRain. He’salso involvedinQuizBowl,baseball,football,basketballandtrack,alongwith Confirmationforhischurch.
Mrs.HigginssaidAlexhasa“naturalability”andaknacktoseeand memorizewords.Sheenjoyshissense ofhumorandisproudtosupporthimin thisjourney.HigginsisthePLTspecial educationteacherforgrades6-12and helpedrestarttheSpellingBeeprogramafewyearsagoafterithadbeen onhiatussince2007,whenformersponsorLorraineMcAllisterretired.During
thewintermonths,thestudentsstudied andpracticedtogethereveryWednesdayinMrs.Higgins’classroombefore the annualcompetitioninFebruary.
She’shappy and proudofthePLT spellers’achievements,withtopfive placesintheregionalcompetitionthe past fewyears.DutchCradyplaced fourth,LaurenCoxplacedsecond,and Alexplaced fifthin2021andfirstthis year.“Westudyandtakeitseriously, andwehavecontenders,”Higgins said.“I’mexcitedbytheopportunity towatchAlexparticipateinD.C.and supporthimandhisfamilythrough thisexperience.”
TheBeeconsistsofsixrounds featuringspellings,definitionsand a combination ofboth. Alex isspeller No.65,witheachgrouphaving60 spellers.Thespellersgetonewordin thefirstroundandwilladvancetothe nextiftheygetitright.Thewords rangefromeasytodifficult,soit’s a matterofluckandskill.Thewinnerof theSpellingBeewill takehomeabout $60,000worthofcashandprizes.
