Candy Ridlbauer and Cathy Hoover ask kids to muffle their ears to demonstrate how an owl hears its prey.
Birds of prey the focus of ‘Camp Odell’
By SARAH FORD for Shaw MediaNorthern Illinois Raptor Rehab & Education rehabbers delivered an engaging and educational program in the Community Room at Odell Public Library on Tuesday, June 27, with an interactive presentation featuring live birds. There were more than 50 children in attendance, plus a couple of dozen adults, all learning about local birds of prey from rehabbers Candy Ridlbauer and Cathy Hoover.
The raptor facility, founded in 2015 in Loves Park, supports the rehabbers’ mission to “rescue, rehab and release” injured owls, hawks and eagles. Most arrive because of “human-related problems,” Ridlbauer said, such as being struck by vehicles, hitting windows, being poisoned by lead shot or herbicides/insecticides or encounters with feral cats.
Babies that have fallen out of nests or hungry juveniles also receive the care they need at the facility before being released back into the wild.
The pair brought in some nonreleasable birds that are now the center’s “ambassadors for education” to give the audience an up-close view of the feathered friends. There was Chase the Cooper’s Hawk, who was found with a broken wing; Tessa, the red-tailed hawk, and Colton, the American Kestrel, both struck by cars; Stella, the Peregrine falcon, who was rescued 13 years ago; Athena, the greathorned owl found in a ravine with a damaged wing; Twilight, the barred owl who was found as an owlet 19 years ago; and Theo and Isabelle, the Eastern screech owls, who imprinted on humans and couldn’t be released back into the wild.
Though the ambassadors will never be released, they’ve been able to foster other
babies brought in and help them in their recovery and release, Ridlbauer said. She discussed what distinguishes raptors from other birds, their diet and lifestyle, some details of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, how rescue and rehabbing works, and how people can help the birds and the environment. The children were attentive and eager to learn about wildlife during the hourlong event.
The presentation was part of Camp Odell’s Summer Reading Program and generously sponsored by Farmers National Bank and Mahaffey Law Office, Library Director Meridith Layne said. Attendees could bring a donation of paper towels, gallon freezer bags or dishwashing soap, which were given to the facility. Follow “Northern Illinois Raptor Rehab & Education” on Facebook to learn about their efforts or support the work they do.

Symptoms and diagnosis of macular degeneration are discussed
By STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D.Macular degeneration is a disease of the eyes that typically gets worse over time, affecting people commonly over age 60. It’s actually the leading cause of severe permanent vision loss in people of that age. It is related to wearing tear of the macula, which is the small central portion of the retina. The retina is the light sensing nerve tissue at the back of the eye. While it does not usually cause blindness, it causes severe vision problems.
There are two forms of macular degeneration. The most common type is the dry form. This may be associated with loss of central vision but not the peripheral vision. It’s caused by deposits in the macula that gradually change the vision over time. The wet form is associated with blood vessels growing beneath the macular. This causes leaking blood and fluid in the retina. This leads us to distorted vision where straight lines commonly look wavy. Also, there may be a blind spot and loss of central vision. Sometimes the dry
form of macular generation will lead to the wet form.
The classic symptoms of macular degeneration include worsening version that is blurry, making it difficult to read the fine print or drive. Some of these phenomena may be shared with cataracts and other visual conditions. In addition, there may be dark blurry areas in the center room. Sometimes there are problems with color perception. Genetics may have something to do with this. Other risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure and obesity. Lately it has been determined that elevated blood sugar has a substantial contribution to macular degeneration.
The diagnosis may be made during an exam by an eye doctor when the eye is dilated. Sometimes a special grid called an Amsler grid is employed to see if you perceive wavy lines. Sometimes an angiography may be performed where dye is injected to determine leakage. Whichever tests are used, it is important to follow closely with your eye doctor.
There is no cure for macular degeneration. Treatment may slow it down
and help to preserve vision. Certain motions slow down vessel formation and leakage from the vessels that contribute to wet macular degeneration. Laser therapy also may destroy abnormal blood vessels. Sometimes a special form of laser, called photodynamic laser therapy, along with the injection of a light sensitive drug, can help locate and treat damaged blood vessels. In
addition, there are low vision aids. Researchers are studying some types of surgery.
Prevention includes attention to the above risk factors including more and more attention to blood sugar. Certain vitamins have shown a definite preventative benefit. These include vitamin C, vitamin E, copper, zinc, lutein and zeaxanthin.
