Club’s November 2023 Rotary Students of the Month. Emerson is the daughter of Kristy and Mike Wagenecht. During school, she is involved in Student Council, Key Club and B.L.I.N.D. She also is involved with community activities such as selling sandwiches, the Harvest Hammer, Veterans Day events, visiting nursing homes and assisting with the Custom-Pak picnic. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, reading, shopping and crafts. Emerson has worked in the Dietary Department at Morrison Community Hospital for the past two years. Her future plans include attending Scott Community College to obtain a rad-tech and ultrasound tech degree. Bush is the son of Trent and Heather Bush and the grandson of Lyle and Gretchen Bush and Dale and Deb Eizenga. His love for sports is reflected in his high school career, where he participated in basketball, football and golf. He also participated in B.L.I.N.D. and Student Council. His B.L.I.N.D. group just visited a nursing home, which he said “was really cool.” He loves sports,

MHS Scholastic Bowl takes first at Riverdale tournament Congratulations to Morrison High School’s Varsity Scholastic Bowl team on its first-place finish in the Riverdale Early Season Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 18, at Riverdale High School. This year’s first-place finish improves upon Morrison’s third-place finish at the tournament last year. Morrison won six of its seven matches on Nov. 18, defeating Annawan, Geneseo, LaSalle-Peru, United Township, Moline and Riverdale and losing to Ashton-Franklin Center. Morrison pulled off a tremendous upset in the championship round against Riverdale. Trailing Riverdale by a score of 230100 at halftime after 10 questions, Morrison managed to catch up to Riverdale by the end of the 17th question. Morrison continued scoring on questions 18, 19 and 20 and won the match by a score of 340-300 to secure the first-place finish.

Morrison approves property tax levy with decrease in tax rate At Morrison’s regular meeting of the City Council on Monday, Nov. 27, the council approved its annual property tax levy ordinance for 2024 (fiscal 2025), according to a news release from City Administrator Brian Melton. Based on the estimated Equalized
Assessed Valuation and statutory levy needs of the city of Morrison, the 2024 tax rate was established with a 0.06% decrease from 1.11956% to 1.11895%. Mayor Scott Vandermyde said, “The city of Morrison continues its fiscal responsibility through strong fiscal
management and sound public policy. The city certainly relies on its tax revenue to support public services provided to our community and we are proud that we are able to do so this year by decreasing our tax rate for next year.”

Morrison celebrates the season with ‘A Storybook Christmas’ By ANAKIN WESTIN For Shaw Media
The streets of downtown Morrison were decked out in lights to celebrate this year’s annual Christmas Walk titled “A Storybook Christmas.” Morrison’s windows and halls of its downtown were decorated with characters such as the Grinch and Charlie Brown for the holiday season. Businesses stayed open late to welcome the stream of visitors as the event culminated with a parade down Main Street. Morrison’s Christmas Walk, hosted by the Morrison Chamber of Com-
merce, serves as a celebration of the season and the community. A horse-drawn sleigh rolled past the city streets lit up for the season, carolers sang from the thresholds of businesses and community groups from all across Morrison hosted their own booths. Amanda Cook and Stephanie Milnes auctioned raffle tickets for a golf cart to raise funds for the Morrison High School Post Prom. Morrison Brethren in Christ Church provided free soup, a tradition that has spanned more than 10 years as “something to make people feel good
and fill their belly on the cold evening of the Christmas walk.” Teachers from Southside School served hot apple cider for free. Students from Morrison High School’s Key Club volunteered their time to help with pictures of Santa in Millikan Park. In addition to businesses being open late for the event, towngoers were invited to a tour of a business that has yet to open. The Bread Lady, who is preparing for the grand opening of Donnybrook Bakery Cafe, opened the doors to her new business. Guests were treated to
cinnamon rolls and received a sneak peek of the new establishment. While work is still being completed, The Bread Lady insisted that “I didn’t want to miss the Christmas Walk.” The town lit the massive Christmas tree in the center of the downtown area at 5 p.m. The Christmas Walk began at 6 p.m. with floats, cars and horsedrawn carriages representing businesses and organizations from across the town. Morrison’s Christmas Walk represents more than a celebration of the season. It’s an event that brings the community together as a celebration of years past and years to come.

graduate of Fulton High School and went on to graduate from the University of Dubuque Born: November 17, 1941 in Morrison, IL in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree. He was an active member of various organizations, including the American Legion in Cordova, IL, the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the IL Wine Association. His special interests and hobbies included participating in plays and writing poetry while in high school and college, growing hostas, cultivating grapes and making wine. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, mingling with the customers and staff at KCW, giving tours of the winery, the music of Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn and was an avid dog lover and supporter of animal rescue. David is survived by his children Corinne “Cori” (Jeffrey) Fogle of Sully, IA, Tisha
(Brandon) Giles of Youngsville, NC and Rory (Mary) Conner of Farmington, NM; eight grandchildren: Bailey (Brandon) Roderick, Richard (Brianna) Fogle, Jacob Fogle, Jolan Fogle, Carissa & Katelyn Giles, and Kale & Emery Conner; five great-grandchildren: Killian, Charlie, Finnick, & Rowick Roderick, and Hunter Fogle. He is also survived by one sister, Gloria (Mike) Graville of Corcoran, CA; one half-sister, Joyce Runge of Clinton, IA; two brothers, James (Sharon) Conner of Port Byron, IL, and Gerald (Ellen) Conner of Sterling, IL; and his long-time friend, Lisa Baize of Kickapoo, IL. His commitment extended to youth development, as Elwyn served as a 4H leader and received the prestigious “American Farmer Award” during his time in Future Farmers of America. Elwyn found joy in playing softball, golf, and bowling. He also enjoyed antique tractors and was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan.

Parents build retreat to honor son killed in action By EARLEEN HINTON
ehinton@shawmedia.com Gretchen Catherwood stood on the helicopter pad at Camp Pendelton, California, when Marines from her son’s unit began to talk about the day in October 2010 when her son was killed in action. Her son, 19-year-old Lance Cpl. Alec Catherwood, was killed Oct. 14, 2010, conducting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, when he was hit by Alec Catherwood was small-arms fire. He 19 when he was killed was part of the 3rd in action in 2010. Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, also known as the “Darkhorse” battalion. “After Alec was killed, we were at the remembrance ceremony and we saw the looks in those men’s eyes. We could see the pain that they felt,” Gretchen said. “We definitely noticed there was communication going on between the Marines that was not including the family members. One of them actually said, ‘This is the first time I’ve been able to talk about that day.’ “And I thought, ‘OK, what if Alec had come home? What would he have faced? Who would have been there for him?’ So right then was the affirmation I needed. I realized since I can’t do that for Alec anymore, what can I do for those who did come home?” One of the men in attendance was a Navy corpsman who treated Alec after he was hit. “He tried to save Alec and he ended up losing both legs,” Gretchen said. That’s when she got the idea to build a retreat to help combat veterans, she said. “I told Kirk what I wanted to do and he said ... ‘No, we came here to Tennessee to retire,’ ” Gretchen said. That changed after Gretchen and her daughter attended another memorial dedication in 2013 and again she heard combat veterans talking to one another about their experiences. “My daughter and I were in the parking lot after the dedication for a memorial. The veterans could talk to each other because they had been there. And I said to my daughter, ‘With or without dad, I am doing it.’ ” The retreat in Springville, Tennessee, is designed as a place for veterans to come together at no cost to them to talk with one another while sitting around a bonfire, walking in the woods or fishing on nearby Kentucky Lake. It was designed as a place for com-
bat veterans of any age from any branch of service from any war or military conflict to come together and share experiences. “This is a safe place for them to communicate,” Gretchen said. On the Darkhorse Lodge’s website, Kirk said he hopes the retreat will help veterans who are struggling with addiction issues or post-traumatic stress disorder after their active service days are over. “The current situation is a dire one,” he said in a video introduction. “My countrymen, men and women, are taking their own lives. Far more than died in combat. And for us it is unacceptable. “Most combat veterans do not want to speak with someone who hasn’t traveled in their boots. So Gretchen’s idea for Darkhorse Lodge is right on the mark for me.” “We’re there when they are active duty, but when they get out is when I believe they need the most care and the most benefits,” Gretchen said. “And that’s where we are falling so short of the mark in our country.” Gretchen, 59, and Kirk, 61, grew up in Arlington Heights and moved to Elgin, Genoa and then Byron after Kirk, a Desert Storm veteran, completed his service. Alec and his sister, Mikaela, both were born in Germany, where Kirk was stationed. The Catherwood family comes from a long line of military service with Gretchen’s grandfather and uncle having served in the Navy in WWI and WWII, her dad serving in the Army in South Korea and her brother serving in the Air Force. “Alec was our first Marine,” she said. “He wanted so badly to be a Marine.” After Alec’s death, the couple moved to Tennessee in 2012, initially to retire. “We moved to Tennessee and saw this very pretty place,” Gretchen said. That’s where the couple began their new mission to construct Darkhorse Lodge on 23 acres in Henry County, 500 miles from Byron. Funded by small donations and fueled with the help of hundreds of volunteers, construction was completed on the $1.5 million facility and a grand opening ceremony was held in September. The retreat is named after the 3/5 Marine Darkhorse Battalion, which lost 25 members, including Alec, in a six-month period while in Afghanistan. Five handicapped-accessible cabins – each with five rooms – are offered, with each of the 25 rooms named for one of the 25 fallen soldiers.

The chow hall is named for Army National Guard Spc. Tim Noble Bowman of Forreston, who was 23 when he died by suicide on Thanksgiving Day 2005 after returning home from Iraq. “Tim was a dear, dear friend of our son’s. After coming home from Iraq and suffering the effects of some pretty severe PTSD, he took his life,” Gretchen said in the video. “Tim was far too young. He had far too much promise. Bowman Hall is named after Tim and we could not think of a better way to honor him and his family.” The facility is designed to offer combat veterans a retreat where they can talk to one another about their service or just enjoy one another’s company. Counselors are not on staff, which allows veterans to converse with one another. Counseling services are available if needed. “We do have some resources nearby who are willing to step in if needed,” Gretchen said. “And that is by design. The veterans can call BS on each other because each of them can relate to being in combat. “We raised the money mostly from individuals who donated smaller amounts with very few corporate donors. We’ve gotten a lot of support from Illinois because they knew us. Now we are getting support across Tennessee. It is gaining traction now that we are open.” With the colder months beginning, Gretchen said she expects to see more veterans in the spring and summer. “We already have groups scheduling. We are having some Darkhorse Marines coming in April and in May we will have 25 women veterans coming to stay,” she said. Veterans can stay at the retreat for five days for free. “I had to say $1 a night on my website,” Gretchen said, noting veterans will be reimbursed the $5 if they choose. Veterans can arrive Tuesday and leave Saturday. Activities include fishing on Kentucky Lake, visiting at bonfires, walking in the woods and working in the Warrior Woodshop, where
veterans can build furniture. A workout pavilion is offered, along with a horseshoe pit and a fire pit. “Kirk works seven days a week as an SRO deputy and then he’s here working, too. He’s a hardworking guy,” Gretchen said, smiling. For more information about Darkhorse Lodge or to donate, visit www. darkhorselodge.org. The woodshop can be therapeutic for veterans, Gretchen said, noting Marine Vets Motorcycle Club donated the woodworking equipment. “They are a great group of Marines,” she said. “We are eternally grateful for the support we have received. For the most part, every penny that has been raised has been through small donations. There is no way we could have done this without everyone’s support. Our supporters are small but mighty and I would not trade that for anything.” The Catherwoods live next door to the lodge. “I am dedicating the rest of my life to building and running Darkhorse Lodge,” Gretchen said. “I don’t honor Alec by giving up and it would have been really easy to give up. I think he would really like this.”

Marine Lance Cpl. Alec Catherwood was killed while conducting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, on Oct. 14, 2010. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California. He was a 2009 graduate of Byron High School and was a member of the FFA as a Sentry, Boy Scouts and had a black belt in taekwondo. He enjoyed athletics, four-wheeling, mudding in his truck and shooting his shot gun. Catherwood earned many personal service awards, including the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Korean Defense Service Medal. Catherwood, who was engaged at the time he was killed, enjoyed spending time with his family and fiancée and was a great friend to many.

A three-day grand opening event to present the new and expanded Berg Pharmacy to the people of Fulton and surrounding vicinity is planned for the week. A plan for developing a new commercial area for Fulton was outlined at the meeting of the City Council and received unanimous approval. The council’s approval took the tangible form of granting a request from Alderman Jerry Van Zuiden for $3,500 for preliminary planning, surveys and platting of several acres of land at 14th Avenue and Route 84 that is owned by the city. The lighted Christmas decorations that add festive spirit to the downtown during the Christmas season took on a new look this year. For several years, the decorations were mounted on the light poles facing Fourth Street and contained a lantern with a candle. During the summer, a neighboring city offered to sell to Fulton a similar decoration, only instead of the lantern, it is a lighted bell. The bells were added to the inside of the poles and doubled the number of lights. The purchase price was $580 and the Lions Club, Kiwanis Club and Chamber each picked up one-third of the cost.

Officials of Fulton State Bank revealed plans to build a new 9,500-square-foot structure on land they bought on the east end of 14th Avenue. Inside the building will be a lobby, six teller stations and up to 10 offices. Bank president Joe Clarkson said ground will be broken as soon as possible in the spring and they expect to occupy the bank by late fall in 1994. At the start of the 1993 football season, a new sign was placed above the Steamers press box on the football field. The sign recognizes the 1976 and 1991 state championship football teams. Athletic director Gerry Kreuder said it was a great project done totally by volunteers who help promote Steamer pride.

3M Corporation in Cordova gave the Fulton Fire Protection District an LCD projector. The projector will be shared between the Fulton Fire Protection District and the city of Fulton for use in presentations or training. The Fulton Chamber formed a committee to determine if there was sufficient interest in a Retail Development Group. The purpose of the group would be to buy downtown properties, fix them up and make them available for renting, leasing and selling, with the goal of strengthening the downtown retail district. Just eight days after the first calls to Fulton residents asking for support, more than $37,000 had been pledged toward the goal of $100,000.

Having gone to FHS as a player and student, Coffey is excited to come back to Fulton as a head varsity coach. River Bend teachers were awarded $3,945 from CF Industries’ Classroom Minigrant program. Students will research a local pond, create simple machines using engineering, science and math skills, learn and develop an understanding of micro-organisms that cannot be seen with the naked eye and take part in a student developed Earth Day program. Medical secrets we can learn from animals are discussed By STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. David Agus has written a book titled “The Book of Animal Secrets.” This book looks at research on animals and nature’s lessons for human beings. First, we have lost sight of some of the benefits of posture. What we gained by being able to walk upright often has been offset by poor posture. People with hunched posture, head and shoulders rolled forward, are twice as likely to die from lung and heart conditions. In addition, when depressed people are asked to sit up straight, they feel less tired, less anxious and are more talkative. Agus says what we can learn from man’s best friend, the dog, is to live in the moment and jump for joy, engage in playtime daily, stay curious and seek new experiences. It is also helpful to be observant and on guard for dangerous situations. It may be helpful to act affectionately and friendly, even toward strangers. Finally, we can benefit by drinking plenty of water. Agus gives us some key lessons we can learn from pigeons, which have excellent abilities to navigate. He challenges us to boost our perceptual intuition by paying close attention to patterns. It may be helpful to create new patterns in our homes. We are advised to take a step back when we make important decisions because what we see initially may not be the full story. Also, when we have an encounter we wish to remember, it may be helpful to write down a few basic details, rather than lots of notes. While we may not have the ability to fight atherosclerosis or heart disease like the giraffe does, we are challenged to monitor blood pressure and other cardiac risk factors. This includes sleeping soundly in as flat a position as possible because heart health is better when we do so. Also, there is a strong connection between dental hygiene and heart health. Getting up and moving regularly like animals, including the giraffe, also is quite helpful. Agus reveals details of how the elephant takes advantage of the elders in the herd with their wisdom and guiding the younger ones for survival. They also tap into their spatial intelligence to
encode important memories. They have some unique abilities to fight cancer that one day we may be able to figure out. In the meantime, we do best when we keep inflammation in our bodies at bay. The information that we get from the chimpanzee includes knowing when to take risks and when not to take risks. Also, the diversity of diet is brought to light with its benefits. From the diversity of work done, we may come to appreciate that human beings may impact their health by more than 30% of a difference in life expectancy based on the type of job and conditions that one does. The important question here is how much do we have to pay you to be unhappy or unhealthy? In the chapter on the rhinoceros, we are again reminded of the importance of moving, especially every hour or so. In addition, we see the benefit of team or social interaction with burst of activity interspersed with socializing. Intelligence of the octopus is highlighted for us to consider maximizing our own intelligence by regulating blood sugar, which is key to brain function. While the brain needs sugar to function, too much sugar leads to inflammation, Alzheimer’s and related dementia. Following the diet on the glycemic index may be helpful and having a regular mealtime may be beneficial. Be aware of the challenges of snacking and the changes that it does to hormones that affect blood sugar. Agus gives much credit to the microorganisms known as a microbiome in our gut. A diverse diet is quite helpful. This may be fostered by prebiotics, which are types of fiber that are not digestible but serve a role in maintaining healthy bacteria and other organisms in our gut. Examples of prebiotic assistance food include garlic and onions, asparagus, bananas, oats, apples, dandelion, greens, flaxseeds and even the cocoa we find in chocolate. Agus turns to the pig and how to help us control our pain. He cites the role of music, positive attitude and mental imaging. Agus goes on to mention how basic activities that humans do help create positive chemicals, such as oxytocin, which is the bonding hormone.

cbielema@shawmedia.com About 50 high school students from 13 schools across Illinois’ 37th Senate District recently gathered at Sauk Valley Community College to participate in state Sen. Win Stoller’s annual Youth Advisory Council. “It’s interesting to me to see what they are concerned about and what they’re wanting to change in our state,” Stoller, a Republican from Germantown Hills, said in a news release. “It’s fun to see these students’ energy and insight. It makes me feel like the future of Illinois is bright if we have students like these as our future leaders.” Stoller’s Youth Advisory Council is a hands-on experience designed to teach area students about public policy, state government and leadership. Each high school within the 37th Senate District was able to nominate high school students they believed showed an interest in government and public service. “Learning about how the government works is important because the government will always affect you,” Rock Falls High School student Taylor Reyna said. “You need to know how it works so that you are making the right choice when voting or even if you’re not

“I really want to major in English, so I learned a lot from one of our speakers who worked in the library,” Rochelle Township High School student Cale Workman said. “There is really a good tunnel effect from her librarian career and local government.” Stoller spent time during the group discussion with each small group, helping students with their proposals and offering advice on how they could advocate for their issue. When the students presented their ideas, Stoller helped spur further debate by asking the groups questions about their legislation. “I would definitely recommend that other high school students participate in something like this,” Dunlap High School student Nithila Thiagu said. “I thought meeting everyone was super fun and I learned a lot of things for just this one day that I didn’t know about last week, so I’m glad I signed up.” The students voted to choose one of the proposals to take up in a mock committee hearing at their next meeting, which will be held in the spring at the State Capitol. Stoller’s district includes all or parts of Bureau, DeKalb, Henry, La Salle, Lee, Marshall, Ogle, Peoria, Rock Island, Whiteside, Stark and Woodford counties.

Voices of Praise Christmas cantata is Dec. 15-17 in Morrison MORRISON – The Emmanuel Church of Morrison’s Voices of Praise invites residents to celebrate as it presents EVOP’s 16th annual Christmas cantata “The Miracle of Christmas!” The cantata will be presented in three services: 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, and 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17. Voices of Praise is composed of 84 singers. The choir will present a new musical work that offers fresh arrangements of familiar carols that are blended with contemporary worship
music. The Miracle of Christmas blends familiar carols, original songs, popular Christmas standards and a variety of musical styles. Soloists include Pam Muur, Lynelle Criss and Ed Karvelius. A quartet of Jason McDearmon, Jeff McDearmon, Ed Pruis and Rich Criss will be part of the program. No tickets are needed for the 60-minute concert. A freewill offering will be received. All ages are welcome. A fellowship hour will follow all performances.
