[of government] and we don’t want to be a city state,” Mueller said. “Isolationism is not a good policy.” Voters eventually made Westmont one of just five communities in the state to reject the retention of home rule. “This issue united everyone,” he said. Home rule status affords municipalities financial advantages, including lower borrowing rates and legal costs, and the ability to increase certain tax rates, such as sales and property tax.

The referendum was necessary because the village fell below the minimum 25,000 residents in the 2010 census needed to be considered a home rule community under state law. Westmont had been considered home rule since a special census was conducted in 2007. Officials said losing home rule would result in a $3 million revenue loss annually. The vote forced the village to repeal a 2.5 cent-per-gallon gasoline tax and a one-half percent sales tax hike.

8ON THE COVER

In response, the Westmont Village Board enacted a 1.5 percent eating tax in June. Mueller said his opposition to home rule was mostly due to “general disrespect for renters.” “Once people understand [home rule], most don’t like it,” he said. “ Seven people [the village board] had discretion on how to spend millions of dollars.” “It just allows too much intrusion by very few people... and it’s not a necessary law.

Mayor: Stormwater management, economic development top 2014 goals By KRISTIN PEDICINI kpedicini@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – After overcoming a rocky – and wet – start to 2013, Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter says he is looking forward to what 2014 will bring for the community. Gunter, elected mayor in April, began his tenure facing a $3 million annual revenue loss due to the repeal of home rule followed by torrential floods that hammered the area April 17 to 18. Still, Gunter said the community has bounced back after a “very interesting first few months.” “In the short time we’ve been together, we’ve accomplished quite a bit,” he said. “But there’s a lot more to accomplish.” Westmont Suburban Life sat down with the mayor to chat about what’s in store for 2014. First on Gunter’s list was a topic that came up often in 2013 but is sure to dominate headlines in 2014: stormwater

Stories to follow in 2014 1. Village to enact stormwater fee? A feasibility study into the fee is expected to be completed by the end of January. It’s unclear when a final vote could occur after that. 2. D-201 asks residents for $24M District 201 will place a referendum on the March 18 ballot asking taxpayers for $24 million over 20 years to fund improvements to its schools. The district has promised it would make efforts to educate the community in the weeks leading up to the election.

management and the potential stormwater fee the village board may enact in the first quarter of this year. “That’s a pretty big goal of ours,” Gunter said, referring to finding an alternative funding source for stormwater management.

Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com

Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter was elected April 2013 and experienced several ups and downs in his first year in the position. A feasibility study into the fee is expected to be completed by the end of January. It’s un-

clear when a final vote could occur after that. In addition to the proposed fee, which would charge property owners based on the amount of impervious land on their property, Gunter said he wants his administration and the village board to be aggressive with the other initiatives recommended by the Westmont Stormwater Management Committee. Part of the effort will include the reinstatement of an Environmental Improvement Commission, he said. This month, nine residents will be appointed to the commission, which will work to maximize the village’s recycling programs and other green efforts, and aid the stormwater committee, Gunter said. In terms of local business, Gunter thinks a new economic development position will help attract new businesses to the downtown and surrounding area. The village has plans to create an Economic Development Director position in a partnership with the Westmont Chamber of Commerce. Chamber Director Larry Forssberg will spearhead the recruiting of new businesses – a role formerly handled by Village Manager Ron Searl and Community Development

Director Shannon Malik. “Larry has proven to be a quality individual and a good representation of our community,” Gunter said. “He’s built the chamber and done so much with the business community. It’s because of him we’re able to set this up.” “We’ve never had someone who would actively be pursuing new businesses,” Gunter said. “With his love for the chamber … It’s the right person in the right position to help this community move forward.” Another goal for 2014 is one Gunter talked up at the beginning of his tenure: communications with the community. “We have reached out, not only to the board but, with the people in the community,” Gunter said. “That’s been a huge benefit to the community. There’s a lot more communication between everyone, internally and externally.” Gunter is optimistic for what 2014 will bring for the village of Westmont. “We’re moving in the right direction,” Gunter said. “We as a municipality want to better serve the residents and the way to better serve them is to listen to them and be able to communicate to them. Everything we’ve done so far is moving in that direction.”

Ask Dr. Webster

Q: Can you offer any tips on floss and flossing? A: There are a few factors you should be aware of when selecting and using the floss that’s right for you. For the most part, deciding whether to use waxed, unwaxed, flavored or plain floss is a matter of personal preference. Floss is meant as a supplement to--not a replacement for-- your toothbrush. It lets you get into those spaces the brush’s bristles can’t reach. One thing to keep in mind when buying, though, is that if your teeth are set very close together, you’re better off with waxed floss. It is less likely to snag and fray in the narrow space. Whichever type you choose, the method for using floss to its greatest effect remains the same: wind the ends of a piece of floss around your forefingers and pull it taut. Slip the floss between teeth and pull it down to the gum line. Pull the floss into a “C” shape and get it between the tooth and the gum. Then, pressing against the tooth, pull the floss up-or down, depending on which teeth you’re cleaning. You are trying to remove the plaque on the side of the teeth, an area where a brush is less effective. Don’t saw the floss back and forth. Keep unwinding the floss a bit as you go from tooth to tooth so that you are always using a clean section. Dental floss, by the way, has been on the market since 1882. Talk with your dentist about its effective use.

Two of Illinois’ biggest and most controversial laws passed in 2013 – concealed carry permits and medicinal marijuana – officially take effect Jan. 1. However, their impact won’t be seen for months, according to government agencies. Illinois State Police will accept online applications to carry a concealed handgun starting Jan. 5 and recently announced the acceptance of paper applications beginning July 1. More than 2,000 registered concealed carry instructors are already listed on the State Police website, said spokesperson Monique Bond, but the first permits won’t be issued until early April. “It could be sooner, but we are going to use the full 90 days to give us enough time to make sure we do it right,” Bond said. In order to obtain a standard five year concealed carry permit, Illinois residents must already have a Firearm Owner Identification (FOID) card, pay a $150 fee, submit to a background check and undergo 16 hours of firearm training with a certified instructor. Applications will be processed by State Police, which will issue or deny the card within 90 days. Denied applications will be reviewed by the governor-appointed Concealed Carry Licensing Board. For similar reasons, medicinal marijuana will not be accessible until well past Jan. 1. Not only will there be a time lapse to process applications for distribution and cultivation centers, said Illinois Department of Public Health spokesperson Melaney Arnold, but government agencies are still determining the specifics of the law’s implementation. “I would like to give a time frame, but there are so many moving pieces,” Arnold said. “We’re working as quickly as we can to get it out.” The Department of Public

Health is in charge of the certification process for doctors and patients, but several other departments and agencies are overseeing different aspects of the law. But progress is slow, Arnold said. Even key elements of the law, such as how to approve dispensaries and certification requirements, remain undecided. “It’s not going to happen overnight,” she said While still a long way off, the eventual effects of both concealed carry and medicinal marijuana will be significant, according to the laws’ proponents and opponents. Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, said he anticipated the state would see a decline in the crime rate as more gun owners are allowed to carry a weapon on their person. Those worried about an increase in guns on the street needn’t be, he said. “You’re looking at people who have gone through extensive training and gone through the same background checks

that a police officer gets,” he said. Colleen Daley, executive director for the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence and an opponent of the bill, said while the law has some positives, such as increased background checks, extensive training requirements and prohibited locations, its effect is unclear. She expects to see lawsuits challenge the law, but said first, people need to be educated. “People are going to be around others who are carrying legal, loaded guns,” she said. “Some are deeply concerned, some aren’t, but the average citizen should be aware that something like this is happening.” Dr. Eldon Trame, president of the Illinois State Medical Society, said many of the more than 12,000 current and retired doctors in his organization were taking a “wait and see” attitude toward medicinal marijuana and that members were neither encouraged nor discouraged from prescribing it. “Some physicians are very much in favor of the law and some are very much not in favor of the law,” he said. “But I, at least, will certainly have an open eye and open mind to this.”

Real chance for fraud in health care law

8LETTERS Children’s museum thankful for volunteers To the Editor: Volunteers are one of our nation’s most valuable resources! Every day millions of caring people enrich their communities by helping to educate our children and prepare them for the future. DuPage Children’s Museum is all about nurturing a new generation of creative problem solvers. Our volunteers are helping to build critical thinking skills in young children to better prepare them for the future. It’s hard to imagine where DuPage Children’s Museum would be without the aid and dedication of these volunteers. During this season, we would like to take this opportunity to say a special thank you to the over 800 volunteers who make a difference every day in our organization and community! As a nonprofit organization, we rely heavily on our volunteers to help us achieve our ambitious goals. Without volunteer support, it would be impossible for the museum to accomplish our mission of stimulating curiosity, creativity, and problem solving in young children. We extend our sincere appreciation to our volunteers for the time, energy and passion they share with the museum. This past year has been an exceptional time for the museum – thanks in great part to the involvement of our volunteers. Before its launch on Oct. 1, the health care law’s exchange website repeatedly failed internal tests, crashing with as few as 200 or 300 people on the site. Yet the Obama Administration pushed ahead, launching Healthcare.gov without the most basic end-to-end security tests. At a recent Congressional hearing, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius was asked whether she would shut down Obamacare’s exchange website until all its security risks were COMMUNITY addressed. She flatly reVOICE fused. With the hasty launch Peter of Obamacare, the Obama Roskam Administration continues to jeopardize the security of millions of American’s personal information thanks to a vulnerable website built for a structurally flawed program. Just how bad is Healthcare.gov? Security experts warn that there are “considerable safety risks” that “hint at deeper vulnerabilities” due to cutting corners on security testing and ignoring industry standards. Just days before the launch, an internal memo warned of “high” security risks but the head of the agency that created Healthcare.gov signed off on it anyway. Software testers have already found several security breaches where hackers can get access to your email and security questions or rig the site to send password-reset information to a third party. Just last week, a North Carolina man tried to log onto the website and got a South Carolina man’s personal information. This isn’t just an illustration of an incompetent launch; it’s a serious threat to the safety of your personal information. The website’s technical shortcomings are well-documented, but of deeper concern is the rampant potential for security vulnerabilities on the backend of the website, the law’s massive “data hub.” The hub will collect the information that people submit to Healthcare.gov when they enroll in the exchanges, and allow the staff of seven different sprawling federal agencies to access it. It has already been forced to go dark for days at a time for technical maintenance. This invokes little confidence that the data hub will be able to keep Americans’ private data safe, making it a goldmine for hackers. Americans deserve a government that is doing everything in its power to keep you safe as it relates to your private information. That’s why the House will not stop its aggressive oversight, will strengthen anti-fraud efforts and demand the Administration put key protections in place in the law. When a person’s private information is exposed, it can cause a ripple effect that impacts their identity, finances, employment and everyday life.

DOWNERS GROVE – Gloria Davis knew she wanted to work with animals since she was a little kid. But after working at a veterinary clinic, she realized seeing animals in pain might not be the best avenue for her passion. “It can be pretty hard and pretty depressing,” the Downers Grove 27-year-old said. “But I still wanted to help them, and with grooming you can help their teeth and their health. “If I can groom them and wash them, and take care of them and make them feel better, and they’re happy at the end, that’s everything to me.” After years of working in pet salons, Davis and her family opened their own this fall, GiGi’s Pet Salon, 1913 Ogden Ave. The moniker comes from a nickname her parents had for Davis when she was little, she said. She doesn’t work at shelters or veterinary clinics any longer, but her business’ location next door to the Western Suburban Humane Society offers her more opportunity to help animals, she said. Last week, Davis planned to meet with Western Suburban Humane Society officials to see what free or reduced-cost grooming services GiGi’s Salon can offer to the no-kill shelter. The first time she worked at a pet grooming salon, she said she instantly knew it was what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. The Downers

Grove North High School graduate went to grooming school in Naperville. She opened the business with her fiance George Emmerich and her dad Robert Davis, a Bellwood firefighter. Lucky for Davis, her father also has a keen interest in animals. Growing up, he always had German shepherds and Dalmatians around the house, along with cats and hamsters. Her father “always wanted to open a groom shop when he retired,” she said. “So when he said let’s do it, I said ‘Yes! It’s my dream.’” After working in several grooming shops in the area, Davis had a good idea of exactly what she wanted in their new, customized store. “They can get anything from just a nail trim, to a bath and brush,” she said. “My favorite is when they bring a long-haired cat in and they want you to turn it into a lion, with a mane and a little puff on their tail. It’s so cute.” The business also offers teeth cleaning. “A lot of people don’t understand the importance of dental health,” she said. “It can significantly improve their health overall.”

staring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, and an executive producer of the 2008 horror film “The Stranger.” Mallhi also wrote two horror flicks – “Crush” in 2013 and “The Roommate” in 2011. Mallhi said he never had any specific aspirations to become a director, but when he wrote “Anguish” he knew it was a story that he himself wanted to tell. Downers Grove, Lemont and Willow Springs provided an authentic suburban setting, but he doesn’t want the imagery to convey cliches or stereotypes. “I just wanted to show it in a different way,” he said. “So it’s not like generic suburbia. There’s really interesting aspects of it. Like my grade school – we shot it in a weird way that’s beautiful. You find the picturesque moments. You look at something and you take it for granted, you don’t really think about it at the time. But then you take another look at some of the stuff and it’s really pretty.” Mallhi said the film, which weaves the spooky story of a teenage girl with psychological problems who may, or may not, be possessed by the spirit of another dead teen, is set in the present day, but filmed in a way to recall ‘70s cinema. “The big question for the movie is, ‘What do you believe?’” he said. It will take months to edit the film, and Mallhi hopes to release the movie in late 2014 or early 2015.

DOWNERS GROVE – Sonny Mallhi viewed his hometown of Downers Grove through a different lens this fall, and in the process, found inspiration in the everyday street corners and buildings people often take for granted in their youth. The Hollywood film producer and writer shot his debut feature as a director, “Anguish,” in his old stomping grounds this November, filming the village’s neighborhoods, the diner he and his friends would haunt in high school, and the playground at his old grade school, Belle Aire Elementary School. “I’ve made a few movies in [Los Angeles] that are supposed to be middle America or the suburbs of Chicago or whatever, but they just don’t look it,” he said. For the month-long shoot, Mallhi recruited a film crew of all Chicago locals and turned his childhood home into a production office. “Maybe it’s nostalgia,” he said. “Maybe it’s just me looking at it, but that’s part of the filmmaking process. You’re guessing other people are going to find this interesting.” After graduating from Downers Grove North in 1990 and the University of Chicago in ‘94, Mallhi headed to the nation’s capital for a short stint working in congressional offices. He quickly realized that career path wasn’t for him, he said, and headed to LA to begin his Hollywood career with no formal film training. His first gigs in LA were unpaid internships. That eventually led to reading submitted scripts for movie studios. “Eventually, you find a script that gets made into a movie, and they make you a producer, and you kind of sink or swim,” he said. Mallhi swam, and now 40, he has been a co-producer on hits like the 2006 time-travel romance “The Lake House,”

Water bill out of control The water bills from [Downers Grove] are out of control. The community needs to get together in protest. We are a family of two. The bill is more than $100 for two months. How are people making it? Enough is enough. Come on people, let’s do something about it. Appears everyone has the money and no big deal?

Restaurant reviews

Spend an evening in South America at Rio’s ADDISON – One of the joys of living in this melting pot of a nation is that everyone comes here, and they bring their delicacies with them. I love American, Italian, Mexican, Thai and Japanese cuisine, along with several other varieties I’ve enjoyed over the years. But every once in a while, it’s fun to branch out by tasting something new. And something new is exactly what I found at Rio’s Fine South American Cuisine in Addison. Billed as a Peruvian restaurant on various websites, Rio’s also has delicacies from Argentina and Brazil that are sure to tempt your taste buds. When you first walk in, you’re greeted by a bar area that’s tasteful and hip, but not particularly ethnic. You could meet business clients for drinks here and they wouldn’t necessarily even recall that it was a South American establishment – unless they look closely at the wine list, which is filled with selections from all over the continent. Enter the dining area, though, and you’ll find yourself in a scene that’s both elegant and evocative of the dishes you’re about to sample. A massive mural across the back wall combines the famous Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks Rio de Janeiro in Brazil with the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru. Other small decor touches give hints of South America without overwhelming the room and making it kitschy. I stopped by Rio’s on a recent evening with a dining companion, and I started right off with an authentic drink from south of the equator – a Dona Paula Sauvignon Blanc from Argentina, which the wine list describes as “bright, crisp, tart green apple skin, lime zest, guava, and grapefruit with a touch of minerality.” It proved to be a terrific accompaniment to the dishes that followed. We started with the Peruvian Sampler, wanting to

The sampler includes the ceviche de pescado (a Peruvian specialty), a tamale, anticucho de la pollo (chicken skewer), and papa a la huancaina (a savory sauce over boiled potatoes). I most enjoyed the flavorful

skewer, while my companion was a big fan of the tamale. When selecting an entree, I was immediately taken by the bright pictures of every dish on the menu. One item, the Pollo Enrollado, grabbed my attention right away. It fea-

spinach and cheese. The chicken is rolled in “panko” and topped with Algarrobina sauce. I expected something savory and was pleasantly surprised that it was more complex than that. “It’s got a sweetness to it,” my dining companion

remarked happily after trying a bite. My companion’s dish was even better, the Tallarin Verde con Churrasco. It included a generous helping of perfectly seasoned steak alongside fettucine mixed with Peruvian pesto (spinach, basil, white cheese, walnuts and olive oil). The steak and the pasta both tasted great on their own, but together the flavors were perfectly paired. We both really wanted dessert – interesting items included churros filled with caramel and hot chocolate dipping sauce, and ice cream made with Andean Lucuma fruit – but we were both too stuffed to properly enjoy it. That just means that next time I’ll have to – regretfully – forgo the Peruvian Sampler to save some room to try some exotic ice cream.

MORE BEARS COVERAGE AT HUBARKUSH.COM

Bears face daunting task for 2014 season Hub Arkush

Marc Trestman scored well in many areas in his first season as Bears head coach, specifically in overseeing the dramatic improvement of one of the league’s weakest offenses and a significant thawing of the icy relationship Lovie Smith had with the Bears’ faithful. An objective look at the Bears’ 2013 season, however, shows the team also took some steps backward. Smith was fired for going 10-6 in his ninth year as the head coach but failing to make the playoffs. Is it reasonable to laud Trestman for going 8 -8 and also failing to make the playoffs after getting blown out in Week 16 by the Eagles and then losing at home on the last day of the season to the Packers when one win would have

clinched the division title? While Trestman should be applauded for the almost surreal growth of Josh McCown, upgrades to Jay Cutler and significant gains on offense, as the boss, he also has to shoulder the weight for the descent of one of the league’s better defenses under Smith to one of the worst in the NFL. Where does general manager Phil Emery fit in all of this? Irrespective of what Brian Urlacher may have had left, the decision to not bring him back doesn’t look good. Would it be different if D.J. Williams and Lance Briggs had stayed healthy? Perhaps, but the fact is the last really good game the Bears’ defense had was against Seattle in 2012 – until the final minutes when Urlacher’s season ended with a hamstring injury. Urlacher is irrelevant, though, because his tank was near empty, and the real problem is where does the defense go from here? Opening day starters Corey Wootton, Henry Melton, Williams, James

Masterbrand Cabinetry

Anderson, Tim Jennings, Major Wright and Charles Tillman are free agents, as is recent addition Jeremiah Ratliff. Youngsters Chris Conte, Shea McClellin, Jonathan Bostic and Khaseem Greene have been disappointing, and that’s probably too kind to Conte and McClellin. Julius Peppers had his worst year as a pro and appears to have lost something, and counting on Briggs to stay healthy in his mid-30s is a crapshoot. There isn’t a single player to rebuild the “D” around. Remember that as impressive as the offensive turnaround and the rebuilding of the offensive line were, Cutler, McCown, Matt Forte and Brandon Marshall were in place for Trestman to build around. It’s also impossible to ignore that while Trestman’s earned our trust as a man who knows offense, Cutler, McCown, Matt Slauson and Roberto Garza are free agents, and Emery has a tough call to make on Cutler. Lost in the tremendous upward

and downward mobility of the offense and defense has been the fact that Joe DeCamillis’ special teams suffered a precipitous drop from where they were under Dave Toub, and Devin Hester also is a free agent after eight years with the Bears. Here is one more disturbing truth about these 2013 Bears: The winning percentage of their 16 opponents was .465, giving them the softest schedule of the six teams that finished 8-8. The only good news is that earns them the 14th pick in the first round of the 2014 draft when they could have picked as low as 19th, where the Dolphins (8-8) stand. A bit more alarming is the fact that of the 13 teams with worse records than them, only the Lions played an easier schedule. Once the balance sheet is laid bare in front of us, it is hard to call this season a success or these Bears anything more than somewhat below average. The trip into this offseason is as paved with uncertainty as any we’ve seen in a number of years.

In the end, Cutler is Cutler ANALYSIS

sports@nwherald.com

He is who he is. In the first half, his offense showed the bad as it stalled on four three-and-outs, although it also showed the good. On his second drive, an eight-play, 80-yard series, Cutler stormed downfield, completing three passes. He topped it off with a 4-yard throw to running back Matt Forte through the cold, misty air, giving his team a 7-0 lead and its only points of the first half. Cutler couldn’t control much of what happened after that, though. He couldn’t control Alshon Jeffery fumbling a precise pass in the second quarter, setting up a Green Bay field goal. He couldn’t control that

“We didn’t make enough plays to win,” he said. “That’s what it boiled down to.” After a question about his hoarse throat – he had a cold – there was silence. No more questions. “All right,” said Cutler. “See you guys.” He hustled from the podium and left the room.

CHICAGO – The tangled web of the Jay Cutler narrative was supposed to be straightened out Sunday. His last game on contract, a 33-28 thriller won by the Packers, was going to make it clear. Play well, Good Jay, forget your 1-7 record against Green Bay, and all is OK. Play poorly, Bad Jay, throw a few picks, and it’s time to go. “The speculation is, ‘Let’s see how he does in this kind of stage,’ ” coach Marc Trestman said after the game. “I thought Jay played well enough for us to win tonight.” But the web twisted even more during the game as fans and media sought the answer to the beaten question: Who is he – Good Jay or Bad Jay? The answer, though, lies in the question itself.

the defense allowed 20 second-half points, or that he threw the ball 24 times, the fewest he has attempted in a full game since last December’s Bears-Packers matchup. Those looking for answers won’t find any, as the quarterback quandary may be delayed another year with a franchise tag estimated to be worth more than $16 million. On Sunday, Cutler was neither the demon slayer nor the utter failure. He was, simply, Jay Cutler. Calm-tempered, scruffy-faced, strong-armed, up-and-down Jay Cutler. After the game he stood at the podium, wearing gray and black and a tired gaze. He answered questions about plays and then the postseason. “I’d love to (come back),” he said before changing the topic. “[Green Bay] controlled the clock well. Early in the

And luckily they finally gave us a call because a friend of theirs told them the free groom was for real. They had just tried us out months earlier and they were very happy with our service.

I get it…. in a world of bait and switch and under-delivering and over promising I can understand their caution and disbelief. Sometimes it takes a friend to give you the all clear it’s safe to give it a try.

South volleyball, Doll’s state medal part of trophy haul By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com As the calendar flips to 2014, what better time than to reflect on some of the best performances put forth by local high school athletes in 2013. Downers Grove South won boys volleyball, several Downers Grove North swimmers were winners and even more teams and athletes made their marks with top finishes in their state competitions.

pushed to the brink with four consecutive three-game postseason matches including against Deerfield in the state quarterfinal. After powering through in those challenging contests, two-set wins over St. Charles North and Lincoln-Way North looked relatively easy. South’s balanced attack fueled its 25-18, 25-20 win in the championship match. In the final, Nick Timreck had 11 kills and four blocks. Mike Schmitt knocked down 10 kills, and Will Tischler added seven. Jordan Pawlicki piloted the offense with 29 assists. David DeMarco collected 14 digs. Quote: “This is unbelievable.,” Chris Widdel said. “Words can’t describe what happened these past few days. I was hanging out with Nick Timreck last night and we were just smiling. We couldn’t do anything else.”

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Downers Grove South Senior | Basketball Why Engo was selected: Engo scored 11 of his game-high 21 points in the second half as the Mustangs took Providence St. Mel down to the wire in a 60-59 defeat. Downers Grove South’s boys basketball team played one of its best games of the season in the opener of the Proviso West Holiday tournament, and Engo was a catalyst as the Mustangs took highly-regarded Knights down to the wire. Engo’s well-rounded game included 21 points, a team-high eight rebounds, a 5-of-6 performance at the free throw line and 4-of-8 shooting from 3-point range. Engo, the Sears Hardware and Appliance Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi about his big second half and where his game has developed.

Have you been working more on your 3-pointers recently? Previous seasons not really, but this summer I put a lot of work into it to try and develop my game, and that is something that came along.

Are you planning to continue at the next level after this season is over? Yeah, I plan to. I’ve been in contact with some local coaches.

When you decide your school, what kind of player is that team going to get? My skills are still developing so I don’t know everything I’m capable of yet. They’ll get a harder worker, I can say that much.

As of Friday night, May said the crews have wracked together 90 continuous hours of work. 16: Weather-related car crashes reported between New Year’s Eve and Monday morning in Westmont, according to the Westmont Police Department. It’s also a good idea to have emergency kits in the car, he said, and to make sure basic items, like wiper blades, Keep the car running You don’t have to be a me- are in check. chanic to know the basics of For those who do decide to “I would keep flashlights, batteries and hand warmers,” said Bob Wing, floor manager at Buikema’s Ace Hardware, 1705 N. Main St., Wheaton. “The biggest thing is if the furnace goes out you have to stay warm, so that’s the biggest key is just warming up.” Wing said it’s a good idea to have salt on hand, which ranges from about $10 to $25 depending on the size of the bag, and to have snow shovels. While snow blowers can’t hurt to have ready to go before winter, he said it’s the little things like just having plenty of batteries for devices that make the difference.

WESTMONT – Old Man Winter seemed to be throwing everything he could at the Midwest this week, and after what seemed like endless snow, an arctic blast moved in Sunday threatening record lows in the Chicago area through Tuesday. As of noon Tuesday, the lowest temperature recorded in Westmont since Sunday was negative 15, recorded at 7:45 a.m. Monday. That mark doesn’t quite reach the record low of 20 below zero for the area set Jan. 20, 1985, according to the National Weather Service. The lowest recorded wind chill came at 9:51 a.m. Monday at negative 42. The cold also forced schools across the western suburbs to cancel classes Monday and Tuesday, including districts 201 and 60 in Westmont.

Q: It’s a New Year. What can I do for my dental health? A: You can keep at least one of your resolutions this year with nothing more complicated than making a phone all. The best thing you can do for your dental health is visit your dentist regularly. If it’s been a while since your last check up, resolve at this start of the year to call and make an appointment for a thorough examination and cleaning. It’s recommended that you visit a dentist twice a year. If you’ve gotten out of that routine, the time to call is now, when you’re in the mood to do something positive in your life. Regular visits to the dentist pay off in a variety of ways. For one thing, it’s just important to keep your mouth healthy. Secondly, the earlier you catch a dental problem, the easier—and less expensive—it will be to address it. It takes the eye of a professional to detect the telltale signs of the disease’s beginning. Since gum disease is the most common cause of tooth loss, it’s something you defiantly want to eliminate as soon as possible. A professional cleaning at the dentist’s office is another function you simply can’t do as well yourself, no matter how fastidious you’re with brushing and flossing. So call today and check one of the New Year’s resolutions off your list.

WESTMONT – The new year brings a new milestone for one family-owned Westmont business. Uncle Jon’s Music – coowned by Jon Kostal Sr. and Jr. – has turned 10 years old. The family run business – specializing in new and used musical instruments, lessons, repairs and rentals – originally opened back in January 2004 at 33 N. Cass Ave. “My dad had the idea before the opportunity came up,” Kostal Jr. said. “We were talking about how it’d be neat if a small, old time music store [opened] downtown... We just thought it’d be something we were good at.” The Kostals were presented with an opportunity from their friend, and now landlord, to open shop in downtown Westmont. The lifelong Westmont resident said the shop employs

Dispelling Myths about Hearing Loss By Audrey G. Freeman, Au.D. - Doctor of Audiology

I

believe a new start to the year is a good time to dispel some myths or incorrect thoughts and begin the year tackling problems we put off last year. One of those problems for you, your loved one, or good friend may be hearing difficulties. I often hear my patients tell me information they heard from others, even doctors, that prevented them from seeking the hearing help they need and deserve. Here are a few hearing myths from the Better Hearing Institute that may help:

The consequences of hiding hearing loss are better than wearing hearing aids. What price are you paying for vanity? Untreated hearing loss is far more noticeable than hearing aids. If you miss a punch line to a joke or respond inappropriately in conversation, people may have concerns about your mental acuity, your attention span, or your ability to communicate effectively. The personal consequences of vanity can be life altering. At a simplistic level, untreated hearing loss means giving up some of the pleasant sounds you used to enjoy. At a deeper level, vanity could severely reduce the quality of your life.

Hearing loss affects only “old people” and is merely a sign of aging.

Hearing aids will make me look “older” and handicapped.”

“Looking older” is often more obvious from several other factors than hearing aids. It’s not the hearing aids that make one look older, it’s other factors; such as, answering questions inappropriately (or not at all), diminished contribution to conversations, misunderstandings, and/or looking as if you are confused or irritated because of difficulty in hearing. If hearing aids help you function like a normal hearing person, for all intents and purposes, these stigma are minimized, if not removed altogether. DOWNERS GROVE – Jessica Larsen and Joseph Dempsey were driving for takeout at Nardi’s Tower of Pizza in Addison when her water broke on New Year’s Eve. Larsen quickly called her doctor, who said there was no reason to rush. “He was like, ‘Oh yeah go ahead and eat your food,’” she said. After some pizza and a quick shower, Larsen and Dempsey headed to Good Samaritan Hospital, where, several hours later, she gave birth to the hospital’s first baby of 2014. Joseph Mark Dempsey, or Joey, as his parents call him, greeted the world at 7:33 a.m. Jan. 1, measuring 21 inches long and 7 pounds, 8 ounces. The healthy baby and mother were set to go home Friday. It was a surprise when her water broke, she said – she wasn’t due until Jan. 11. “On Friday, I went into the doctor’s office and he kind of
