PERICORONITIS Q: What is pericoronitis? A: The word comes from Greek and Latin and literally means “inflammation around the crown”. Pericoronitis is almost always associated with the eruption of a third molar, more popularly known as a wisdom tooth. It is a result of a wisdom tooth not being able to fully erupt through the gum. The condition is more commonly known as an impacted wisdom tooth. Pericoronitis is a condition that generally occurs in a patient between the ages of 17 and 24, the time of life when wisdom teeth are commonly attempting to erupt. Bacteria can get into the space between the gum and the tooth and cause a painful infection and swelling. In extreme cases, the swelling can extend beyond the jaw and into the cheeks and neck. Such cases, unfortunately, almost always call for the extraction of the impacted tooth in order to eliminate the infection and avoid damage to other teeth. Extracting the impacted tooth almost always calls for the skills and training of an oral surgeon, a dentist who has gone on for special training as a surgeon. Depending on the circumstances, the oral surgeon may elect to do the surgery in his office or in a hospital. Talk with your dentist about wisdom teeth and the issues that can come with them.

WESTMONT – After a 16-year run as trustee, Sue Senicka is headed to warm and sunny Florida. The longtime Westmont Village Board member is not seeking a fifth term and plans to retire in Florida during the winter months. Senicka’s long resume Sue Senicka of public service began in Westmont in 1993 – she moved to town in 1992 – when she was appointed to the Promote Westmont Commission. She served in that role until 1999 when she was elected to her first term as trustee. She was elected to the Village Board four times by Westmont voters. “I was certainly very humbled by that,” Senicka said of the confidence voters showed in her. “The community thought I was worthy and for that I am grateful.” In addition to her service as trustee, Senicka is involved locally with the Lions Club, DuPage County Meals on Wheels, People’s Resource Center and the Westmont Special Events Committee. She still has plans to be involved locally in the Westmont community.

ESTMONT 2 WSuburban Life
“We’ll spend winters in Florida and the summers in Westmont because Westmont is our home,” she said. “When I am here I certainly will be active, volunteering with different organizations. I’m active with the Westmont Lions Club and I won’t give up working with Meals on Wheels.” Senicka’s retirement as well as the decision from trustee Bob Scott not to seek re-election opens the door for two new Village Board members. Marie Johanik-Guzzo and Linda Liddle have filed to run for the two seats occupied by Senicka and Scott, while Steve Nero will seek re-election. No other candidates filed for the election, meaning there will not be a competitive election for the Village Board, barring write-in candidates. Senicka said the board is in shape moving forward despite losing the 24 years of combined board experience from her and Scott. She offered some advice for the new board. “I’d like to see them continue to model their decisions along with our comprehensive plan. We worked hard and long on getting a plan for the future and vision for our community. It’s easy to stray from it but it’s critical and important that we keep grounded and go in that direction,” Senicka said. Being a trustee is difficult work, she admitted. “In so many ways it’s very hard. ... A good example is when Standard Market came in. Residents didn’t want it and were vocal about it. It’s difficult as a trustee to sit on that fence and listen to those needs and do everything to reach compromise and come to consensus,” she said. “But at the end of the day, the most important thing is to do what’s right for the entire community.” Westmont will always hold a special place in her heart. “This community is just the most incredible community. It’s the only place I’ve ever been where a perfect stranger will smile and say hello to you. It’s such a tightknit community and I am so proud the community supported me and elected me four times,” Senicka said.

new funding mechanism for much-needed stormwater improvements in town, the Westmont Village Board discussed adding a referendum to the April 2015 election ballots. The referendum question will either ask voters to approve a sales tax increase or to enact a monthly stormwater utility fee for property owners to fund the projects. What’s next: The Village Board is expected to vote to pursue one of the two referendum options at its Jan. 8, 2015, meeting. The referendum question would then appear on April 7 election ballots, requiring a majority vote to pass. Sony since flip-flopped on that decision, though many of the large movie theater chains haven’t backed off their decision not to show the movie. Scott Potter, marketing director for Hollywood Blvd., said the theater, 1001 W. 75th St., will have “increased security presence” while screening the movie. “We don’t have any big concerns because the Department of Homeland Security said there is no imminent threat,” Potter said, adding that the theater is working with Woodridge Police. On Monday, Potter said the shows on Christmas Day and over the weekend went without any incidents. The shows were sold out all weekend and Hollywood Blvd. saw record presale numbers for its three Christmas Day showings. Potter said the decision to show the movie had deeper meaning for the Woodridge theater than just ticket sales. “It’s important for freedom of speech and it’s important for our country. As an independent theater we wanted to be part of this history,” Potter said.

the Westmont Park District secured a $2.5 million grant from the Department of Natural Resource and the Parks and Recreational Facility Construction Act, providing crucial funds for the park district to construct a 10,000-squarefoot arts center on the north side of Ty Warner Park. What’s next: While final plans have yet to be determined, officials have hinted at amenities that include a dance studio, performance stage, an outdoor terrace, a full-service kitchen and three multi-purpose rooms that could be used for everything from business luncheons to wedding receptions. Nero will seek re-election and newcomers Marie Johanik-Guzzo and Linda Liddle will seek the other two open seats. The collective experience, in years, serving on the Village Board from outgoing trustees Senicka and Scott.

Township investing in caring communities One of the things I love about this time of year is the extra generosity of heart that seems to overflow from the people around me – be it an extra pair of hands to help load up a car to bring toys to a domestic violence shelter or someone letting you into traffic during a busy commute on Ogden Avenue. Everywhere I look, it feels like everyone is in the mood to go that extra mile. COMMUNITY This excites me because at the VOICE township I think one of the Lori most important roles we play Wrzesinski is working with community to make our world a better place. On Dec. 8, we were able to thank some of those community members who selflessly give of their time, energy and other resources to make Downers Grove Township what it is: a great place to work and live. There are so many individuals and organizations we collaborate with that it is always difficult to choose who we want to acknowledge. Reflecting on 2014, two major programs stood out as worthy of the extra special recognition at our annual luncheon. Our Senior Advisory Council and S.A.L.T. (Seniors and Lawmen Together) committee worked tirelessly to launch its first Car Care Clinic for seniors. While many were involved in organizing this highly successful event Sept. 20, there were three who really demonstrated their commitment to community with their efforts. Cpl. Mike Urso of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department, Lynn Dralle of the Westmont Fire Department and Alice Krampits of the Westmont Park District Senior Center were humble as they accepted a small token of our thanks for the level of dedication they contributed to this program and so many others in our township. Another group of individuals who continue to inspire me with their insight, compassion and good hearts are those high school students who serve in the township’s peer jury program. Just celebrating the completion of its 14th year, the program would not have the impact it does without their dedication. This year, we highlighted three who all started as freshman and now, as seniors, will leave behind big shoes to fill. Surrounded by proud parents and grandparents, we were able to thank Bob Keding and Rucha Patel from Downers Grove South High School and Damian Margarites from Downers Grove North High School. Their outstanding demonstration of character has been a constant source of inspiration to me. The township always has tried to collaborate with the communities within our borders to make them places we can all be excited and proud to be a part of, and we want our partners in these endeavors to know how much we appreciate and value each and every one of them.

Christmas wreaths adorn the Westmont sign earlier this month downtown near the train station.
Here’s hoping you had a great 2014 and that 2015 is even better. A lot happened in Westmont in the past year, and it’s been our honor and privilege to bring you the details of those stories and the fascinating people who make the news. If you missed our annual roundup last week of the top stories of the year, you can find it online at http://shawurl.com/1n5l. A three-year street resurfacing program is moving along in Westmont. When completed in 2016, more than half of the streets of Westmont, about 30 miles, will have been resurfaced. Surrounding communities continue to deal with decaying roads, so it’s great to see infrastructure improving in town and village officials addressing the issue.

I believe the people of Downers Grove should be able to vote on whether our town should build a new Village Hall and police station. Someone said people shouldn’t have the opportunity to vote on this issue because a traffic signal is needed in their neighborhood. Putting up a new traffic signal costs a couple hundred thousand dollars, not $50 million. I could support putting a traffic signal there, but that unrelated issue should not limit the ability of people to make decisions for their community. This is a big change for Downers Grove, and the people should have the right to vote on what they think about this proposed new Village Hall and police station.

By Gina Kraman The physical rigors of taking ballet classes are understood – the stretching, jumping, twirling, and repeating. And the benefits known: greater fitness, flexibility, and muscle tone. But improved career performance? Most ballet students don’t seek to become professional ballet dancers. They move on to other jobs, and according to former ballet student and businesswoman Sarah Jukes, perform those jobs quite well, thanks to ballet. Jukes believes that ballet students have learned to be prepared, teachable, flexible in mind (not just body), fast learners, hard workers, and team players. “These elements are vital for success in dance, and also in the modern work place.” Capitalizing on such skills, Salt Creek Ballet (SCB) offers ballet lessons at its Westmont studios to train dancers from toddlers to pre-professionals. Students take lessons, and execute their training in periodic
performances. “We believe that a classical ballet foundation is the basis for any of today’s dance styles. We strive to nurture children and adults in the beauty, discipline, and art of dance,” according to SCB. What makes ballet training so valuable? Like all dance, ballet requires physical strength to learn steps and train for a performance. Some believe that the intensity of dance rivals training for sports, with burst of intensity needed to accomplish goals. Research shows that ballet dancers’ aerobic capacity, muscular strength, endurance, and agility are superior to non-dancers. Ballet training also enhances posture, grace, and coordination. Classical ballet classes traditionally start with students working both sides of their bodies at the “barre.” This horizontal wooden railing provides support for dancers doing exercises with increasing levels of difficulty. The remainder of the class occurs in the “main space” where dancers execute their disciplined routines.

kmurray@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – From model trains circling a track around packages and a deckedout Christmas tree to a magical train ride on the Polar Express, the holiday season and railroading seem to be inevitably linked. Luckily for residents of Downers Grove, the Boy Scouts of America Venture Crew 57 model railroad club meets twice a month at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Downers Grove for train enthusiasts of all ages. “We are the only youth-oriented model train club around that invites kids to run their own trains,” said Calvin Christy, 68, adviser for the group. Founded in 1993 by Scouts and their fathers, Venture Crew 57 welcomes boys and girls ages 14 to 21. Keith Lipski, owner of Timberline Train Shop Limited, 5228 Main St. in Downers Grove, has become very familiar with the railroad club. As a member of the National Model Railroad Association, his group also meets at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, which is where he met Christy and the club members. “Model railroading is a very interesting hobby because you get to learn different things,” Lipski said. “Carpentry, electrical, history, photography. There are so many aspects that keep people’s interests.”

LA GRANGE – When you’re craving the taste of Italy, there’s no need to empty your savings account on plane tickets and hotel stays. Just head to downtown La Grange and visit La Buona Vita to experience delicious, homemade Italian fare. On a stormy December evening, my brother and I decided we were in the mood for a home-cooked, hearty Italian meal, and decided to give La Buona Vita a try. Eager to satisfy our appetites, we perused the long-sheet menu tempting us with everything from steak and lamb chops to seafood. To open the meal, we ordered fried calamari, fully aware of the amount of calories we were about to consume. Once we’d savored the well-prepared appetizer, our server brought our dinner salads and two generously portioned pasta dishes. My fellow diner chose the Linguine Viareggio, featuring linguine with mussels, baby clams and scallops dressed in a lively pomodoro sauce. The meal, according to my brother, had the perfect amount of spicy kick. While my taste buds usually crave a heap of spices, I decided to order the Rigatoni Emilio – pairing the pasta with fresh mozzarella, homemade marinara and garlic. The sauce was light and tasty, a great complement to the creamy mozzarella. After we consumed every last, delectable bite of our food, both my brother and I leaned back and sighed, knowing full well not one more ounce could make its way to our stomachs – we were stuffed. The restaurant also features gluten-free recipes including pasta dishes, so no one has to miss out on the pleasures of Italian dining. And the elegant bar offers craft beer on tap, along with select wines from around the globe. The bar is a focal point along the sleek dining room, where large windows look onto the cityscape. During our next visit, the dinner menu won’t be the only one on my radar, because I’m leaving room for one of the tempting dessert selections: La Buona Vita’s Molten Chocolate Cake. It promises a warm chocolate cake with a gooey center served with vanilla ice cream and raspberry sauce. On our visit, we found the food alone was enough to warrant a return trip, but the service added to the experience. Not only was our server attentive and extremely helpful when

Westmont softball runs table for regional, sectional titles
The resilient Westmont softball team did not let an early-season rut ruin their late season heroics. Saddled with a 5-4 record early in the spring, the Sentinels put the pieces together and battled for the Interstate Eight Conference North Division title. The surge continued as they won regional and sectional titles and played in a supersectional game for a chance to go downstate. The Sentinels pitching staff threw a 2-0 shutout to clinch the sectional title against IC.

The Sentinels successfully defended their Interstate Eight Conference North Division baseball title in 2014, but that was only the start. In their first appearance at the Class 2A state finals in 25 years, the Sentinels brought home their first state trophy with a third-place finish. That came on the heels of a 27-71 season and winning regional, sectional and supersectional titles, the first postseason plaques of any variety for the program since 2007. Zach Moran earned the save in a 7-4 win against IC Catholic in the regional championship, then earned the win in the supersectional game against Ottawa Marquette. Brothers Charlie Donovan (junior) and Joe Donovan (freshman) and seniors Tommy Franczak, John Kelly and Greg Pietrzak propelled a solid lineup.

Westmont sophomore Annie Carlson brought home a pair of state medals, finishing third in the 300-meter hurdles and fourth in the triple jump. Tim Doll netted an all-state finish by placing ninth in the 400-meter dash, becoming just the second male track athlete in Westmont history to earn state medals all four years. Doll was runner-up in the 400 as a junior and sophomore and ran with the 4x400 relay that was seventh in 2011.
Westmont boys cross country Westmont volleyball team captures sectional championship wins regional championship Senior runners Nick Dea, Anthony Alessi and Mitch Perrotta all placed in the top 10 at the Nov. 1 sectional race as the Sentinels ran to a Class 1A sectional championship. A week after the trio finished in the top five at the Aurora Christian regional, they turned in another impressive performance at the Lisle sectional. Dea led the pack in third place, while Alessi was right behind in fourth and Perrotta finished sixth. They were followed by Tony Cordero (47th), Jake Juska (61st) and Sam Asa (73rd). Westmont finished in 17th out of 25 teams at the 1A state final.
The Westmont volleyball team showed why it was awarded a No. 1 seed in the 2014 Class 2A playoffs, reeling off two comfortable victories and cruising to a regional title. After a first-round bye, the Sentinels defeated St. Joseph in the regional semis, then downed Morgan Park, 25-8, 25-20, for the regional championship. Westmont then recorded a hard-fought victory against fellow No. 1 seed Beecher in the sectional semifinals, but could not bring home the sectional title, bowing out to Watseka in three sets.

A year after capturing their first state trophy with a second-place finish at the 2013 state meet, the Trojans girls swimming team repeated the feat Nov. 22 at the state meet at Evanston High School by scoring 118 points to tie Rosary for second place.
