While orders of a dozen red roses are the most requested, this year there have been many requests for bright spring flower combinations, she said, such as orchids and spring tulips. “We really like to have an emphasis on taking an average valentine arrangement and taking it up a level,” she said. “When you can really tell your sender thought out of the box and came up with something different … that’s where
Phillip said shoppers should consider a few things before purchasing flowers online, especially the guarantee. Local florists also provide better service and value, he said. “We caution people to be realistic about fancy pictures and low prices [online],” Phillip said. “If it looks to good to be true, it probably is.” While Phillip’s does business locally and nationally, Phillip said customers are still encouraged to visit their local Phillip’s shop in person. “Nothing beats dropping by and picking something up yourself,” he said. “[Flowers] are really a gift that says a lot emotionally and that doesn’t have to cost a lot of money,” Phillip said. “There’s just something about flowers between human beings that’s artistic … There’s nothing like it.”

WESTMONT – The threeday rush has begun at Phillip’s Flowers of Westmont. While the florist admits December is the busiest month and Mother’s Day is the busiest week, Valentine’s Day holds claim to the busiest three-day stretch of the year before the lovers’ holiday. “The volume is starting to pick up and continues to grow every day,” said Baxter Phillip, executive vice president of Phillip’s Flowers, with nine other west suburban locations in addition to the Westmont shop, 524 N. Cass Ave. While some are way ahead of schedule – Phillip said the first Valentine’s Day order often come at the end of December – many others wait until the last minute to scoop up some flowers for their loved ones. For florists, the love fest brings about 10 times the normal volume, he said, adding that with this year’s romantic holiday falling on a Friday, the majority of deliveries have been scheduled throughout the week, mainly Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Beverly Zitkovich, manager of Phillip’s in Westmont, said the shop has already ordered about 72,000 roses for the week.

Park district’s Golembiewski named Young Professional of the Year By KRISTIN PEDICINI kpedicini@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – Day in and day out at the Westmont Park District, Steve Golembiewski said he comes to work with a positive attitude and a lot of motivation. “I want my ambition to outweigh my talent,” said Golembiewski, the assistant superintendent of recreation. “And I’m willing to work hard to achieve that.” Steve After grad- Golembiewski uating from Winona State University, the Wisconsin native was lucky to find a job with the park district, he said, adding it was always his personal goal to some day end

up in Illinois. “I not only fell in love with the job but the community as well,” Golembiewski said. Seven years after joining the park district, Golembiewski was awarded the 2014 Illinois Park and Recreation Association’s Young Professional of the Year in January. Without knowing he was being recognized until his name was announced at the state conference, Golembiewski said it was a surreal
experience. “My heart was beating out of my chest … it was like an out of body experience,” Golembiewski said. The IPRA Awards are a way to recognize different leaders in the field, according to the organization’s website. “I’ve never considered it an individual award,” he said. “It’s an accumulation of everyone in my life. It’s an ‘us’ award.” Throughout the years, Golembiewski has become involved with different committees in the community and has been a part of many programs, including the formation of the community theater program, the Holly Days events as well as the Haunted Forest. These park district programs have been big additions to the community, he said.
“I really want to help out the Westmont community,” Golembiewski said. “I really want to focus on giving something back and do whatever I can to make Westmont known.” Golembiewski’s main objective is to bring the park district and community some recognition – a goal which he said takes a lot of hard work from the entire staff. “It’s amazing that I have those kinds of people around me to support me and strive for this goal,” he said. The Westmont resident said during his tenure the park district has been keeping up with the times and not resting on its laurels. “When I’m working, a lot of my decisions affect my job and the place I call home,” Golembiewski said. “It puts more ownership in my position, which I love.”

MEDICAL EXPENSES could be important deductions for 2013. Since our out-of-pocket medical costs keep rising (and our incomes are less due to lower interest rates), you should check your expenses, including: • Medicare insurance and the drug premium • Insurance premiums - paid by you (after, not pretax) or deducted from your pension and Cobra costs • Non reimbursed medical and especially dental costs • prescription drugs • hearing aids and batteries • medical mileage @ 24 cents/mile • long-term care insurance While medical expenses are only deductible over 7 1/2% of your adjusted gross income - now over 10% if under age 65 - many taxpayers are itemizing this year since their medical costs plus real estate taxes, contributions and sales tax deduction add up to more than their standard deduction. SRAUSS TAX SERVICE can check your medical expenses. We can prepare your 2013 Federal and IL taxes, answer your many questions for 2014 and save you money. We are located at 624 62nd Street, Downers Grove and are open from 9AM - 9PM daily.

Bakery owner says shop has ghostly presence By KRISTIN PEDICINI
La La Li Bakery & Patisserie
kpedicini@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – As the chefs at a local Westmont bakery work late into the night concocting sweet creations, it’s not uncommon to hear the sound of padded footsteps or equipment banging throughout the shop. La La Li Bakery & Patisserie owner Laura Fleming said these are the audible sounds of the shop’s friendly ghost – Mrs. Lindstrom. Fleming said she and her employees at the bakery, 20 N. Cass Ave., often hear strange noises or see different “events” take place since opening her bakery at 20 N. Cass Ave. “At Christmastime, there were some cookies that had disappeared,” Fleming said. “I knew they were made … and a week later, the cookies were on the cart ... I said, it must be Mrs. Lindstrom and at that time a pan came flying off the shelf between us.

We just leave her alone … she’s not harmful and she doesn’t scare us.” Eleanor Lindstrom owned Lindstrom’s Bakery in the same space from some time in the 1960s through the early 90’s, according to Fleming, whose Westmont business opened about three years ago. Lindstrom passed away on Dec. 17, 1995. On several other occasions, the bakery’s old gas oven has been pre-heated and ready for cooking when she comes to open the shop in the early morning. “At night we turn off the oven but in the morning, the oven is on at the right tem-

Library to celebrate Valentine’s Day early
Ice Fest displays ‘art for the moment’ because at that point there were no ice carving companies in the U.S.,” he said. “That was 34 years ago and we’re still doing it.” This weekend, Nadeau and his staff hauled dozens of 300-pound blocks of ice to the annual Downtown Downers Grove Ice Festival. The 40 Winter Olympics-themed sculptures gracing Main Street businesses were the work of his team, as were the live ice sculpting demonstrations each day of the festival. The art of ice sculpting has come a long way from hand chisels. Nadeau Ice Sculptures can cut pieces at the shop using computer designs paired with an automated drill called a CNC machine, typically used to make exact corporate logos out of ice for events. And, of course, there’s the crowd-favorite tool, the chainsaw, often used by the sculptor along with a dremel. The saw is a change of pace for artist Al Ramirez who has carved for Nadeau for about
By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Jim Nadeau and his team will sculpt nearly anything a client can dream, from a 100-footlong train filled with cookies for Nabisco, to Michelangelo’s “David” used in the film “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” But, like a gourmet meal, the opportunity to marvel is fleeting, and in a matter of hours the ice sculptures are gone forever. “It’s art for the moment. I know it’s going to disappear,” he said. “It’s planned obsolescence.” Nadeau learned the skill while working as a line cook in the early 1970s. Back then, chefs created ice swans and other banquet pieces with hand tools, not chain saws. “It would take a very long time to do some very basic stuff,” Nadeau said. “I just immediately fell in love with the concept.” His first attempt didn’t

His mentoring chef knocked it off the restaurant loading dock with a swift kick and a German-accented insult in a moment of what might be generously described as motivational.
Nadeau kept at it, and in 1980 he left his job with Marriott Hotels to start what might be the first ice sculpting business in the country, Nadeau Ice Sculptures, based in Forest Park. “They told me I was nuts,

Nadeau says they use the clearest water they can buy to ensure the ice is clear, similar in quality to bottled spring water. The water is frozen in 300-pound tanks at 22 degrees, the entire time agitators move the water around to force out air. Then an electric hoist lifts the blocks from the tanks using steel clips frozen just a half-inch into the ice. Each block takes four days to freeze. The business has 45 tanks, staggered to make about 90 blocks a week.

Q: When should a child first visit a dentist? A: As a rule, a child should see a dentist by age one, or within six months of the first tooth’s eruption. Some parents put little thought into the care of so-called ‘baby teeth’ because they’re going to fall out anyway. The fact is, baby teeth are important in many ways, including their role as place holders for the permanent teeth. On the first visit, the dentist will examine the child’s mouth, teeth and gums and explain to the parents how to effectively keep the area clean. He also may have some nutrition tips. The dentist will also be able to evaluate the impact of any habits the child may have developed, like thumb sucking. Tooth decay can develop any time after your baby’s teeth appear. By his first birthday, your baby could have eight or more baby teeth. And if one of them is causing pain, he or she won’t be able to communicate that fact. Another consideration in favor of the early visit to the dentist is the opportunity to start a good relationship between the doctor and the patient. The dentist, based on his or her examination, will be able to recommend a schedule for future visits. As with any medical issue, the earlier any sort of dental problem is recognized in your child, the easier it will be to correct it. Talk with your own dentist about the best steps to take with your infant.

WESTMONT – A Westmont man allegedly pretended to purchase a bottle of water before grabbing money from the register at two Darien gas stations last week, according to a Antonio Darien Police Castillo Department news release. Antonio Castillo, 39, 1136 Florence Ave., was charged Feb. 5 with two counts of felony robbery. About 11:40 p.m. Feb. 4, Darien police responded to the Circle K Shell gas station at 8975 Lemont Road, for a report of a robbery. The clerk reported a male entered the gas station, used the washroom and then brought a bottle of water to the counter. The offender then grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash from the register and fled in a vehicle south on Lemont Road, according to the release. No injuries to the clerk were reported.
Then about 2:40 a.m. Feb. 5, Darien police responded to the Shell gas station at 8226 Cass Ave. for a robbery. The offender brought a bottle of water to the counter, then grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash from the register and fled south on Cass Avenue to southbound Interstate 55. The clerk received a minor injury to his finger when the register was opened, but no medical attention was required, according to the release. At 2:54 a.m. Feb. 5, an Illinois State Police trooper on patrol located the vehicle and subject matching the description of the offender in the two Darien robberies parked at a Shell gas station, at Route 53 and I-55 in Bolingbrook. Castillo was taken into custody with assistance of Bolingbrook and Darien police. After being moved to DuPage County Jail for a physical line-up, both clerks from the Darien gas stations positively identified Castillo as the offender, according to the release.

Removing the mask of domestic violence Each day, she puts on the mask: the happy mom, the competent worker, the able volunteer. The mask is there for a reason. It enables her to get through her day while hiding the hurt, fear and confusion she feels. The cause? Domestic violence. One in four women experience domestic abuse in their lifetime and Family Shelter Service was established to help survivors of domestic abuse rebuild their lives and break the cycle of violence for themselves, their families and future generations. Our clients often tell us COMMUNITY they were forced to don these VOICE “masks of normality” to Maureen make it through their daily routine. And children also McGuire learn at a very young age they must wear the mask, as one of our clients so aptly wrote: “The most challenging part about the masks is that once Mom has put hers on, she has to lean down and put a tiny little mask on each of her children as they step out the door. She then has to pray that they have the strength to keep it on. As they grow, they begin to put on their own mask. “When you are finally out, and as you begin to trust and feel safe, slowly you can put the masks into a box. At that point, you are no longer looking through the small constricting holes of the mask. The most wonderful day Mom will ever experience is the day you see the true, unhidden beautiful faces of your children, faces filled with love and peace.” To honor the courage of this woman and many people like her who have found hope and healing at Family Shelter Service, this year’s annual gala fundraiser will take place April 11 at The Abbington in Glen Ellyn and is named “Carnevale: A Celebration of Hope.” Elaborate masks have traditionally been the signature feature of the Venetian Carnevale. For Family Shelter Service, this theme symbolizes the importance of removing the mask so the healing can begin. As a community, we do not talk openly about domestic violence, and if we do, it is in whispers and hushed tones, shrouded in secrecy – similar to the mask. Similar to cancer, AIDS and other social issues that were once taboo, we need to talk about the proverbial “elephant in the room.” When we talk about domestic violence, we validate to survivors the issue is real, that the “crazy making” and pretending must stop. Only then can we help these individuals take off the mask, and, in the words of our client, “see the beautiful sights right in front of us, right now.”
Maureen McGuire is the marketing and communications representative for Family Shelter Service.

Parking ticket reply I agree. Why isn’t Brookfield ticketing or towing cars? A fire truck was trying to drive down my street the other day to shovel paths to the hydrants, and they couldn’t get through at the south end of the block, so they had to back it up to get out. On Ogden Avenue in Brookfield, someone had been plowing the sidewalks for a while, and I was so grateful, but it seems like they just gave up about three snowfalls ago. The only place to walk now is in the streets or alleys, since only a few of the businesses bother to shovel.

I just read in Suburban Life this week about the Downers Grove disposal program for drugs, which is wonderful. I just want people to be aware of the fact that, and I am a Downers Grove residence, for years at the Lisle police station, you’ve been able to walk in and put your drugs in a box without making an appointment and sometimes that may be more convenient. So anyhow, I just want everybody to know about it. I think it’s wonderful Downers Grove is finally offering this program. But I think it would be easier for a lot of people if they don’t have to make an appointment, they can just drop their drugs off, which I’ve been doing for years.

Frozen and covered in ice crystals that have actually burned the food by being too cold for too long. Too long is right…. Now that you know you’re going someplace warm do you have a place for your pet to enjoy their time away during their vacation? …No well maybe I can help you in making that decision. Firstly I know how hard this is…you’re not sure if the neighbors can watch them or the in-laws have the time…they like to go on vacation too. Secondly what are the options, vet…kennel….day
care center…how do you decide? (drum roll please) Solution… you gotta Do A Tour. You Gotta meet the people. As you know …You know your pet best. You will make your decision based on how you connect with that person that will be in the care of your pet. It takes a bit of time to visit and get a feel for the people but its really the best way to do it. I know I’m biased because this is what I do but having done this for nearly 13 years this is what people say to me. They are glad that they came out to visit us and they were very happy to see the facilities and go through the daily routine. I can say all sorts of nice things but here are some of our reviews… 12/8/2010 David from Willow Brook We been using this kennel for 8 years. We are very happy with the care and attention our 2 dogs receive. The dogs are actually excited to go there! The staff play with them daily and give them baths before pick-up.
5/25/2012 Mike from Lombard These guys are awesome. Other than the dog park, this is the only place that my dog actually gets excited when we pull up in the parking lot. They’re always nice, they LOVE my boxer Fenny, and she’s always in high spirits when we pick her up. We will continue to always use this place. I have talked your ear off…if you have any questions please give us call at 630-969-3145. We actually live on the property with our pet clients so this is more than just a job… this is home for us Give us a call at 630-969-3145 we would love to show you our little slice of heaven. kpedicini@shawmedia.com WOODRIDGE – When Samuel Tavolino ran up the stairs to see his new bedroom last week, the only sound to be heard was the 6-year-old’s screams of, “Awesome!” With red and blue walls, a hand-painted cartoon jet, helicopter and Captain America adventure scene, the Woodridge boy looked on at his newly renovated bedroom with true awe. The dream bedroom was created by Special Spaces Chicagoland, a nonprofit group that designs and constructs bedrooms for children fighting critical illnesses. Samuel was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in March 2012. For his mother, Donna Tavolino, seeing a smile on the face of her son warmed her heart. “It’s bittersweet,” she said. “It stinks that we’re in this position in the first place but then you find all these people who have so much good in their hearts and who are willing to do things for you and your family.” One morning almost two years ago, Samuel woke up sick. His mother thought it was a sinus infection but the next day he was diagnosed with leukemia. After 30 days of rigorous chemotherapy, Samuel was declared in remission. He still is but has about another year of treatment left. “The first year was horrible but now he gets the same [treatment] regime,” Donna Tavolino said. “He’s a tough kid. He never complains and never cries. He’s a very special kid.” The bedroom remodel is the 14th room makeover for the Naperville-based Special Spaces Chicagoland, according to Kelly Knox, branch founder. She said the organization usually creates one bedroom a month, adding that they’re already booked for all of 2014 and have a wait list for 2015.
Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com
Samuel Tavolino, 6, of Woodridge gets his first look at his bedroom makeover, proclaiming it “awesome,” thanks to the nonprofit Special Spaces Chicagoland.
“He’s a tough kid. He never complains and never cries. He’s a very special kid.” Donna Tavolino, on her son, Samuel
For each room design, Knox finds a sponsor – Coldwell Banker in Samuel’s case – and then begins the eight-week process, she said, adding that most rooms take about 10 to 12 hours to complete. “This is so gratifying every day ... it’s absolutely amazing,” Knox said. “This is the best feeling in the whole world.” Special Spaces Chicagoland also works with From One Kid 2 Another – a Naperville-based charity started by Knox’s neighbors, Peggy and Kelly Chinn. For Samuel’s reveal, From One Kid 2 Another provided new toys for him, his 8-yearold brother, Tristin, and his 4-year-old sister, Sabrina, courtesy of Imaginext Toys. About five hospitals from the area reach out to Special Spaces, along with family members, friends and neighbors with children in need, according to Knox. “Every child who’s sick deserves some happiness and that’s what we’re doing,” Knox said.
Once a child is chosen, a team from Special Spaces interviews the child to get an understanding of his or her favorite colors, themes and wishes. At the room reveal last week, Donna Tavolino said Samuel’s new room is “absolutely perfect.” “[Special Spaces] is one amazing charity that does amazing things,” she said, adding that she and her husband Mark hope to become more involved with the organization in the future. Seeing her son excited and happy during the reveal was all that mattered, according to Donna Tavolino. “He’s ecstatic,” she said. “And 10 minutes of happiness for him to forget what he has to go through is absolutely priceless.” While the family will never be worry free, she said once the treatment is over, there’s a 90 percent chance it won’t come back. “Samuel’s gone through more in life than I ever have,” the mother said. “…No kid should have to go through this.”

BUCKLE-UP YOUR VALENTINE The Downers Grove Police Department reminds you to "Buckle-Up Your Valentine" during the holiday and throughout the year. Valentine's Day is about showing the ones you love how much you care about them. One easy way you can demonstrate your love is to buckle up and insist that everyone you love does the same anytime they are riding in a motor vehicle. Unrestrained or improperly restrained children riding in a motor vehicle are twice as likely to die or be severely injured in a crash. The single most important thing you can do to protect your children is to buckle them up properly, every trip, every time. Make sure your child safety seat is the right fit for your child and your vehicle. Downers Grove residents that need assistance installing their child safety seat can call Supervisor Tim Sembach at (630) 434-5636 to schedule an appointment with a certified child safety seat technician.

8NEWS BRIEF Fire Department seeks residents’ help WESTMONT – In the aftermath of recent snowstorms, the Westmont Fire Department is asking local residents for assistance. The department is looking for residents to help uncover fire hydrants, according to Fire Chief David Weiss. He said there are more than 1,000 hydrants in the village. “Our crews have been inundated with special tasks as a result of the extreme weather,” Weiss said. “Because of this, we have not been able to get out and uncover all of our fire hydrants in the community ... If residents know where a fire hydrant is and have the ability to dig it out, that would be greatly appreciated.” If residents are unable to dig, just placing a flag or marker on the hydrants would be appreciated, Weiss said. For more information, contact the department at 630-9816400.

*We really appreciate the recognition by U.S.News&World Report that ranks us among Tier 1 National Universities. We share this recognition across the university, with every department and each program. It’s relected in the research our faculty spearhead, the patents we earn, and the awards our students win. We don’t do any of these things for the accolades. We do them because we think there’s no such thing as too ambitious.

Irritable Bowel, Celiac, Crohn’s or Colitis? Are you afraid to leave your house due to an unpredictable bowel? Have you tried diferent treatments but continue to sufer? Do you know the essentials for a healthy digestive system? Have you given up and decided to just live with it? he digestive system assimilates food (carbs, fats and proteins) to produce energy. It breaks down food into nutrient forms that your body can absorb. It uses enzymes, good bacteria and hydrochloric acid to break down food to a usable form. Your gut is a barrier, a tube that starts in your mouth, continues as your esophagus, small intestine, large intestine and rectum. 80% of your immune system is in your gut. When you break down the barrier (gut lining), toxins can “leak” into the blood stream leading to an immune response, inlammation and food allergies. Hippocrates, the father of medicine said… “look to the gut, there will you ind the origin of almost all human illness.”
Hi, my name is Dr. Jefrey E. Forzley with Lemont Natural Healthcare. I am a chiropractic physician and a holistic practitioner. I am passionate about helping people with chronic health conditions. I have been in practice for 28 years. As a holistic practitioner I evaluate the nervous system, immune system, endocrine system (hormones), diet essentials (Neuro-‐Metabolic Care), manage the underlying cause and use natural therapies to manage digestive disorders. here are many essentials required for proper digestion. Let’s talk about a few… Zinc is necessary to make hydrochloric acid (HCL). HCL is needed to break down food (protein) in the stomach and for production of methyl groups. Methyl groups turn on tumor suppressor genes and turn of oncogenes leading to potential cancer growth. If HCL is deicient, this results in poor digestion and a many imbalances due to a deiciency of methyl groups. HCL deiciency also leads to growth of pathological bacteria like H. Pylori, which can cause gastritis, stomach ulcers and possibly stomach cancer. Probiotics (good bacteria) are normally found in the gut. Optimal levels are needed for a proper functioning digestive system. hese probiotics are also part of your immune

system. hey play an important role in the protective barrier in your gut. Your gut makes up 80% of your immune system due to this barrier system. Antibiotics kill pathologic bacteria and infections but they also kill good bacteria and cause gut dysbiosis (imbalance). his dysbiosis can lead to pathologic bacterial, yeast and parasitic infections as well as food allergies. Digestive system inlammation is associated with IBS, Crohn’s, Celiac and Ulcerative Colitis. It is due to stress, poor diet, toxins and food allergies. Digestive inlammation leads to production of cytokines (inlammatory cells). hese cytokines travel in the blood to the brain and inlame the brain cells. he brain (mesencephalon) in turn controls the digestive system. his leads to a vicious cycle resulting in an inlammatory cascade which exponentially worsens over time. Successfully managing digestive conditions involves balancing the nervous system, digestive system and immune system as well as improving the diet, decreasing gut inlammation and detoxifying the body. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a digestive disorder that includes abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating and alternating constipation and diarrhea. he cause is unknown but theories include toxic overload, intestinal infections, inlammation from stress and poor diet generalized condition of the digestive system poor signaling from the brain to the digestive system for proper function.
Medications to treat digestive disorders can weaken your immune system and lead to infections and immune degenerative conditions including cancer. hese medications may give you symptom relief but have side efects and DO NOT ADDRESS the UNDERLYING CAUSE of your condition.
Testimonial As someone who lives with chronic nausea, poor digestion and anxiety, I assumed I was out of options when countless doctors told me that there was nothing else they could do for me. hey told me it was likely all in my head. hen I visited Dr. Forzley and he told me from the initial consultation that he was very conident he could help me. I was so excited that I cried. No other doctor has ever been so much on my side. Now, 8 weeks into treatment, I am nausea free, anxiety free and my digestion is normal. I have started living a life I never thought I could live. My body is a machine, slowed and dirtied by processed foods and environmental toxins. But with the help of Dr. Forzley, my body is on the way back to an optimal state for long term health and happiness. Veronica M.
Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity is a digestive condition that involves gluten sensitivity like Celiac Disease but is not an autoimmune disorder. It involves digestive symptoms (pain, bloating…), fatigue, joint pains as well as neurologic symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, poor memory, brain fog and diiculty concentrating. Celiac Disease, Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are autoimmune diseases. An autoimmune disorder is when your immune system attacks your body instead of protecting it. here is NO CURE for autoimmune disorders. But you can calm down the immune response NATURALLY and decrease the efects of the tissue destruction. If you have an autoimmune disease like Celiac, Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis and you do not balance and calm down the autoimmune destruction, your immune system can attack other tissues and cause multiple autoimmune disorders. It is common for people with an autoimmune disorder to have multiple autoimmune diseases for this reason. Medications are not always the long term answer.
30 minute consultation:
Holistic therapy can manage digestive conditions by: 1) inding and balancing the underlying cause and… 2) using natural therapies that work with your body.

Restaurant reviews
Thai Pot stirs affection for traditional cuisine DOWNERS GROVE – Thai fare has become more commonplace over the years, and, like many other adopted cuisines, often more Americanized. Breading, cream, sugary sauces and less traditional spices frequently are incorporated. Thai Pot seems to resist that temptation, offering authentic flavors and food, to good result. During my first visit to the restaurant, I stopped by for lunch. Tucked into a strip mall in Downers Grove, the storefront eatery has a bright, appealingly decorated interior. The full menu is not available midday, when the restaurant focuses on a selection of weekday lunch specials, which are fairly diverse and very well priced. For just under $8, you get soup, the appetizer of the day and a well-portioned entree. The meal started with a simple yet delicious chicken and jasmine rice soup. It reminded me of my mom’s best chicken noodle, but the jasmine and a smattering of other Thai spices gave it an extra layer of savory that really set it apart. All the components were cooked well, and the broth had an almost buttery texture. The aromatic fish sauce and spices in the red curry with tofu, which usually are muted by lots of coconut sauce, wafted my way as the server approached the table. The emphasis was on the spicy chili sauce in the curry, a dish overflowing with veggies and tofu. The tofu itself melted in my
mouth. It was boiled, not fried, giving it an eggy texture. After the satisfying lunch, I was curious to check out the full menu, and followed up another day with a dinner visit. I started with an order of Shrimp Cigars – admittedly chosen because of the great name. They were big plump shrimp, tail-on, alongside Thai basil and a bit of onion, all wrapped and fried in a wonton wrapper. The visual was a great one, and the presentation allowed the shrimp to stay the star. My entree of spicy basil leaves with chicken had a great blend of flavors, particularly the sauce. It contained just enough basil to add a nice punch. I would have liked even more of the gravy, simply because it was so good. Thai Pot’s greatest strength is its commitment to authenticity. Thai is one of my favorite cuisines – I love the Americanized versions just as much as I love the ones straight from the recipes of Thai grandmothers – and Thai Pot managed to throw in a couple flavors I hadn’t experienced before. Diners who would like to push their boundaries a bit, or those who already relish the more traditional flavors, will want to find out what’s cooking at Thai Pot.

Westmont’s Montraveous Little drives downcourt during Friday’s home game against Lisle. Little scored 23 points in the game, but the Sentinels couldn’t hold off the Lions in the second half and lost, 67-62.
Little’s effort not enough for Westmont By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – Montraveous Little provided a much-needed boost to Westmont’s depleted boys basketball team Friday night. Unfortunately for the Sentinels, the senior guard’s 23-point performance was not enough to stop Lisle’s second half rally as Westmont fell, 6762. Little scored early and often in the annual rivalry tilt, racking up 15 points in the first half as the Sentinels took a 36-28 lead into the locker room. With starting point guard Danny LoGiurato sidelined due to a deep leg bruise,
Lisle 67 Westmont 62 WESTMONT LEADERS • Montraveous Little: 23 points • John Kelly: 19 points
Westmont head coach Craig Etheridge praised Little’s ability to shoulder the offensive burden. “Montraveous had a great first half, and he played the whole 16 minutes,” Etheridge said. “He did a nice job of creating offense – hitting shots, getting to the free throw line and setting up other players.
“But [Lisle] made some defensive adjustments and really slowed down the game in the second half. They pressured our guards and attacked the paint on offense, and prevented us from doing what we wanted to do.” After Lisle converted points off the opening tip, Westmont (8-16 overall, 2-6 Interstate Eight Conference) imposed its will on offense, going on a 16-4 run and opening up a double-digit lead. Carrying a 25-15 edge into the second frame, the Sentinels methodically worked their perimeter offense, frustrating the Lisle defenders and generating several trips to the free throw line.
Westmont was in the double bonus from the onset of the second quarter and converted 9 of 13 free throws in the frame. But Westmont made just two field goals in the second as the lead began to dwindle. Out of the break, the Sentinels were outscored 18-9 in the third quarter and trailed 4645 heading into the final eight minutes. Westmont fought back to tie the game three times in the fourth quarter before a Greg Pietrzak free throw gave the Sentinels a 57-56 lead. But the team could not finish off the rival Lions, who went on an 11-5 run to close the game and earn their second conference victory.
The Sentinels rebounded the following day, recording a 63-52 road victory over the Latin School of Chicago. Westmont has four games remaining before regional play kicks off on the final week of February. As for LoGiurato, Etheridge confirmed the leg injury is not as severe as once speculated but did not disclose a timetable regarding his return. “Our offense is not as potent without Danny in the lineup,” Etheridge said. “He gives our offense a lot of speed and ball-handling ability. He is a good defender and creates a lot of matchup problems for the opposition.”
Why Rugienius was selected Rugienius scored 17 points in Saturday’s crosstown clash, leading the Mustangs to a 68-55 victory over Downers Grove North. What was the game plan when facing a bigger Downers Grove North team? I try to play the same way every game. Coming in, we knew they were a bigger team, so I wanted to use my quickness and outside shooting ability to my advantage.
What does it mean to get this win at home over your rival? It’s a huge win. We always love to beat our rivals. It’s good for the fans, too. There is always a lot of hype going into these games, so it’s nice to protect home court and generate some momentum going toward the playoffs.
We just need to play our game and execute. With five games left in the regular season, we can’t get caught looking ahead to the playoffs. We just want to finish the season strong and get better with every game.

DOWNERS GROVE – The goal from the beginning of the season for Downers Grove North’s girls basketball team was to win the West Suburban Silver title. Mission accomplished. A 53-43 win Friday over Lyons Township combined with Hinsdale Central’s victory against Proviso West on Feb. 4 gave the Trojans their first outright conference championship in school history. According to head coach Stephan Bolt, the team’s chemistry went a long way to
An emphatic 51-35 win over Proviso West on Feb. 1 kept them in the hunt for the conference crown. The backto-back losses to North and Hinsdale Central was just the second time Proviso West dropped consecutive games all season. Junior Peyton Winters led the way against Lyons with 17 points, 10 blocks and four rebounds. Sarah Costello chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals. The next day, the Trojans emerged victorious in a crosstown clash against Downers Grove South, 58-35.

It was a great team effort, I think we got into a rhythm early and that really helped us as the game progressed. We were able to move the ball around the perimeter and hit all the open players. When Paul [Engo III] and Danny [Spinuzza] found me on the outside, I made a few threes that gave us an early lead.
its conference title. “I know I’ve said it all year, but this group of girls is so close, they really love playing with and for each other,” Bolt said. “They have bought in to the system and worked really hard to get to this point. “We feel really good about where we are right now. Obviously there is always room for improvement, but we are playing with a lot of confidence and are excited to start postseason play.” The conference finale versus Lyons capped an impressive season for the Trojans, who improved to 23-3 overall, and went 11-1 in WSS play.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Rugienius had the hot hand early for the Mustangs, drilling a trio first quarter 3-pointers. When the Trojan defense pressured the South shooters in the second half, the senior center made them pay, converting eight points in the paint in the second half. Rugienius, the Sears Hardware and Appliance Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life sports reporter Alex Soulier about the victory over rival North, the Mustangs’ run-andgun offense, and team’s playoff aspirations.

day, Feb. 19 vs. No. 15 Lake Park or No. 17 Glenbard North Outlook: With an outright West Suburban Silver Conference title in hand, North’s best season in recent memory has been rewarded with a No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the 4A playoffs. The Trojans begin their march towards a sectional title with a game against the winner of Lake Park and Glenbard North. Should the Trojans advance to the regional finals, they could face regional host York in the Feb. 21 title game with a berth in the sectional semifinals on the line. North would not have to face the top seed in the Addison Trail sectional, Wheaton Warrenville South, until the sectional championship on Feb. 27. The Trojans are led by Indianapolis University commit Sarah Costello, who is averaging 12.4 points, 9.3 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game. Sophomore Jaida Green has solidified her place in the North starting lineup and paces the team in scoring with 15.7 points per game.

Westmont’s AnneMarie Carlson drives through the paint during a Jan. 30 home game against Lisle. Carlson and the Sentinels start postseason play tonight at the Cristo Rey Jesuit regional.
Mustangs, who frequently alternated wins and losses and finished with a 5-7 record in the West Suburban Gold conference, they are hoping to finish strong in the playoffs. South wound down the regular season with a home win against Morton before losing to crosstown rival Downers Grove North on Saturday. After the West Suburban Conference crossover game on Wednesday, the focus will shift to the postseason, as the Mustangs receive a favorable matchup against West Chicago in the first round of the Wheaton North regional. If South moves on to the regional semis, the team will face host Wheaton North for a shot to make the regional final game on Feb. 20. The Mustangs run their offense from the inside out, powered by senior forward Claire Hardy and junior forward Ava Porlier.

With 2A postseason play beginning this week, Westmont must quickly prepare for Wednesday’s matchup against Cristo Rey Jesuit. If the No. 3 seed Sentinels upset No. 2 regional host Cristo Rey Jesuit, they could meet top-seeded Tilden in the regional finals on Friday.
