By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – Community Unit School District 201 is considering a facilities upgrade plan that could cost $9 million – about half what it requested in a recent failed referendum. The Board of Education received an update at its April 28 meeting about the new plan, after the district decided to reassess its facilities priorities when voters rejected its third referendum in 13 months. Voters denied the referendum April 7 with 65.9 percent of the vote. A November referendum was rejected with 56 percent. A March 2014 referendum was defeated with 78 percent. Steve Cashman of the Cashman Stahler Group presented the board with the potential new plan. The board did not make any recommendations or vote on the plan.

According to the proposal, new facilities would cost $9.1 million, meaning projects have been significantly scaled back from those the district suggested in the April referendum. The board was scheduled to vote on declaring intent to issue $9 million in bonds at its Tuesday meeting. Manning Elementary School renovations are expected to cost $1.1 million – a decrease from the original estimate of $8.2 million. The biggest cost will involve switching the location of the main office and the nurse’s office. Cashman said this will allow the district to open the office and get a better view of who comes into

GUM DISEASE & YOUR HEART
Q: Can gum disease cause other health problems? A: It’s long been known that your oral health is closely related to your overall health. New research has found that chronic periodontitis, an inflammatory gum disease, is potentially related to the severity of heart attacks, also called myocardial infarctions. Researchers from the University of Granada in Spain studied 112 heart attack patients and tested them for a variety of conditions, including periodontal health. Their preliminary findings were that there is a relationship between gum disease and the severity of heart attacks. Their findings were published in the prestigious Journal of Dental Research under the title, “Acute myocardial infarct size is related to the periodontitis extent and severity.” Research is continuing. Medical experts have known for some time, however, that bacteria from gum infection – and from other ailments in the mouth – can get into the blood stream and cause problems. Researchers have found, for instance, that people who suffer from gum disease are twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease as those without gum disease. Several years ago, as published in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology, doctors determined that in the case of a 35-year-old mother who had a stillborn birth, the baby’s stomach and lungs contained the same strain of oral bacteria the mother had in her untreated gum disease. Talk with your dentist about the steps you can take to avoid gum disease.

the school. The plan also will include new security doors and locks. Miller Elementary School will be the cheapest proposed renovation, at $270,000, down from $3.8 million. Renovations would include the installation of security doors, a security system and video surveillance equipment. Improvements at Westmont Junior High School are relatively similar to those originally proposed. The plan includes enclosing classrooms and doing minor work to HVAC and electrical systems. The cost of the project has dropped slightly from $1.4 million to $1.3 million. Westmont High School’s plans also remain relatively similar. The proposal includes enclosing classrooms, upgrading the main office and improving fire suppression, HVAC and electrical systems. The cost of the proposed upgrades is down from $6.8 million to $6.4 million.

WESTMONT – As Westmont residents cross the finish line at an upcoming local race, they will not only help children with cancer but also will honor those who have lost their lives serving the country. The sixth annual St. Jude Race to the Flag 5K will be held May 24 at Ty Warner Park. Proceeds from the event, generated by runner contributions and sponsorships from local businesses, will be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a research and treatment facility for diseases in children, primarily pediatric cancers, according to the hospital’s website. “We encourage people to look at the bigger picture and come out to be healthy for the kids that don’t have the opportunity to do so since they are sick,” said race committee co-director Kim Baxter, who also is superintendent of recreation for the Westmont Park District. “Whether you are doing the run or are with your family, we encourage anyone to come out who is interested.” The Chicago Area Runners Association-certified race will include chipped timing. Medals will be awarded to overall male and female winners and first-, second- and third-place male and female winners in 13 age groups. Registration includes a T-shirt and free pancake breakfast provided by the Westmont Lions Club after the race. Participants also will receive a digital event bag via email with access to exclusive offers, coupons and sponsor messages. Baxter said the village of Westmont’s health and wellness committee – of which she is a former member – and community volunteers coordinate Race to the Flag as a way to honor veterans. “The committee at that time was looking at times of year to do the race in Westmont, and Memorial Day stood out to us,” she said. Before the establishment of the race, the committee held a walkathon to raise money for the hospital. The

dates that bested Savage and Svoboda at the polls, questioned whether passing the resolutions of appreciation was legally binding and could have an impact on ongoing investigations of the school. To an observer, this line of questioning seems like a mean-spirited dig rather than a sincere concern. Apparently it wasn’t sufficient to have defeated Savage and Svoboda at the polls, to have been given a mandate from voters that sweeping change was needed on the board. Instead of being a gracious victor and moving on to clean up the mess made by previous leaders, we have an overt attempt to humiliate those who were defeated. It’s no surprise that Savage and Svoboda chose to leave before the official vote on the certificates. Kim Savage and Nancy Svoboda took part in votes that were openly derided on this very opinion page, and were part of a former board that generally left the entire Chicago region scratching its collective heads trying to understand what was going on in Glen Ellyn. But surely there’s no harm in taking a moment to recognize their service, letting them have a moment of acknowledgment as their time as public servants came to a close. If the ongoing investigations point fingers in their direction, so be it. That’s another matter for another day. Being right on many, or even most, of the issues doesn’t give the new board majority carte blanche to treat the new minority, or anyone else, in a disrespectful fashion. There’s a lot to fix, but showing some decorum in the process would go a long way toward healing the wounds on campus, too.

The foundation for building a successful reader begins at birth. Early literacy encompasses everything a child knows about reading and writing before they actually learn to read and write. At the Westmont Public Library, we offer a variety of programs, resources and tools to help parents and caregivers develop this important skill with their children. COMMUNITY Story times at the library VOICE focus on the five practices of Adrian Every Child Ready to Read – Litwin talking, singing, reading, writing and playing. We encourage caregivers and children to interact and have fun while learning literacy skills through books, puppets, finger plays, songs and movement. During these activities, toddlers soon learn to perceive pattern and sequence through repetition of rhymes. When I see a toddler just barely walking, concentrating on shaking and stopping her egg shaker to the music, I know she is learning self-regulation – an important skill she will need for school success. The library offers many easy and free ways to incorporate literacy into your child’s life. This summer, I encourage you to register your pre-reader for our reading program – Invent Your Summer. We will be providing participants with an activity guide filled with fun ways to promote learning. For the littlest ones, this could be taking an alphabet hike to look for things that begin with each letter or drawing a picture of an animal and telling someone where it lives and what it eats! You are always welcome to bring your children to the library’s Reading Garden to check out books and play with toys. When you’re here, try our AWE computers designed specifically for children ages 2-8 and feature numerous educational games. Exciting changes are coming to the library this summer that will give families even more opportunities for fun and learning. We received a grant for early literacy that enables us to revitalize our Children’s Reading Garden. A new dramatic play center will expand imaginations and verbal communication skills, and the addition of more manipulative toys will allow for problem solving and small muscle development. We are here to help answer questions or provide ideas. Stop in and visit or check out our website at westmontlibrary.org/kids.
If you were hoping the new majority on the College of DuPage Board of Trustees would hit the ground running at their first meeting, starting the process of repudiating all the controversial decisions we’ve seen out of the school in the past year, then you were likely thrilled with what you saw at Thursday’s meeting. If you felt, though, the winners from the April 7 election should allow the outgoing board members to recede into obscurity with at least a little bit of dignity, well, that didn’t happen. Some strife is inevitable. The three holdovers from the previous board lineup who represent the former majority aren’t likely to support the four members, led by new Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, in many of their efforts to roll back all of those bad decisions. There are going to be a lot of 4-3 votes, as there were Thursday. Putting its stamp on President Robert Breuder’s medical leave by voting to put him on administrative leave – good. Now he can’t declare his medical leave ended and go back to work at any time he pleases. Moving forward with a state-run audit of the college’s finances – also good. We need clarity on whether the college has been a good steward of tax dollars and students’ tuition. Hiring temporary legal counsel for the board that had previously represented Hamilton – an eyebrow raiser for sure. What was decidedly not good was the political theater around the awarding of “certificates of appreciation” for outgoing board members Kim Savage and Nancy Svoboda. This is in response to the woman who is telling people to stop volunteering for adoption rescue animals. My rescue is not a brick-and-mortar rescue. We count on the kindness of foster homes and our veterinary offices. Many brick-andmortar rescues have paid staff and some volunteers. If you want to look, so be it, at the dogs in their kennels. The majority of breed rescue dogs are not in these facilities; they are individual rescues, breed specific. So please, do not tell us to stop volunteering, or else where would these dogs go? understand what our First Amendment protects. Taking more and more away
Hi, this is a rebuttal call to the person who said don’t blame the governor. We know that the state of Illinois has been in bad trouble through Democratic poor handling, however you want to call it. But when he comes into office and he starts cutting things – education, funding for pension that’s already been there, cutting the medical needs of people who are on disability, cutting college kids who get grants ... Look at all the Republican states that are in dire straits because of their Republican governors. ... They just want to slash and make us pay more and take more and more away from us. That’s what he’s trying to do. He’s a venture capitalist, and he will always be one.

People are instigators of change
I was just wondering why churches and towns don’t know that it is the people who determine what is done and that the people are the ones that are the instigators of change and that people should be consulted as to what changes are being done.

What’s with all the interruptions?
WMP
It seems like every time they have some officer shooting somebody, there’s always a riot. ... I can understand them taking out their anger on the police because they see them as the people who perpetrated the crime against their victim. But with this looting and everything, I just don’t understand how that plays into it. That’s why a lot of people don’t have sympathy for these people when something like this happens. They see all the looting that has absolutely nothing to do with the crime that was committed or the police who committed the crime. It’s just ridiculous.
NEW WALK-IN TUB OR SHOWER
To the individual who talked about all the breaking news interruptions just a few minutes before the 4 p.m. news begins and the breaking news is really nothing special, thank you. Many times during the newscast, they say “breaking news” just before they start another subject. If they would stop that, maybe they would have more time for real news. ... Why do all the drama programs have such loud background music?
Look local for superintendents
After completing a varied career in learning, researching, teaching and publishing in my field of education ... , I submit that I am prepared to comment on the process by which public school district superintendents are chosen. Fifty percent of the time, the process results in a bad choice that costs the taxpayers many times the chosen individual’s salary due to litigation and early buyouts. It seems as though the people chosen must always be from out of town when in every case, at least several career educators in each district were well qualified and would have been far better choices.

Board member Shannon Hancock had concerns about the plans at Manning, where the security doors would be between classrooms and bathrooms. “I’m just concerned about a first-grader who goes to the bathroom and gets locked in that security space,” she said. Cashman said an alternative could include building a new addition on Linden Avenue that would become the new entrance – but that would come with added expenses. He said the board could move forward with the plans as soon as its wants and could have portions done before the next school year starts. “I think any component we could do immediately, we would,” he said. The board also discussed financing options for the plans, talking them over with Elizabeth Hennessy, managing director with William Blair & Co., a Chicago-based bond underwriting firm that has worked with the district since 2003. Hennessy presented three nonreferendum financing options: • A working cash fund bond: The district would issue $15.5 million in bonds that would be paid back over 20 years. Hennessy said this option “pretty much ties your hands” because it gives the district no flexibility to issue other
bonds during the next 20 years. This bond would be paid off in 2034 and has the highest interest rate. • A life-safety bond: This bond would be worth $9 million, and the district would pay it back during the course of 12 years. The bond would be paid off in 2027. • A funding bond: Also worth $9 million, this bond would have payments comparable to the life-safety bond until 2022 and be reduced to give greater flexibility with issuing bonds in the future. It would be paid off in 2030 and would have a higher interest rate than the other $9 million bond option. All three would require public hearings. If 10 percent of registered voters sign a petition, the board would have to place the bond measure on the ballot. Superintendent Kevin Carey said the second two options are best for the district because they will give the district flexibility as it moves forward. Board President Marie Charlton said the plan will be difficult no matter the approach. “It’s hard to take a building that’s been built over four generations … and do something with it without trying to recreate something,” she said. On Tuesday before the meeting, Charlton said the board can vote on the type of bond to approve at a future meeting and that Tuesday’s meeting would only focus on the dollar amount associated with the bonds.

Suburban Life honors western suburbs’ young achievers By MATT LA LUZ mlaluz@shawmedia.com The western suburbs’ best and brightest were recognized recently by Suburban Life Media. Two area high school students received college merit-based scholarships at an awards reception Thursday at Seven Bridges Golf Club in Woodridge. Suburban Life partnered with DuPage Credit Union to award $2,000 scholarships to Downers Grove North High School senior Rachel Krusenoski and Downers Grove South High School senior Thomas Matysik. The winners were chosen based on academic performance, character and commitment to volunteer work and extracurricular activities, and beat out 48 other students who were given certificates of recognition as Subur-
ban Life Scholars. Event organizer Kelly Buchanan saw the reception as an opportunity to celebrate the community. “Events like this bring our community Thomas together. We are able to Matysik recognize the good and share that with the community,” Buchanan said. “Basically, it’s kind of pay-it-forward.” The selection process for the awards started in September and continued through March. Suburban Life newspapers routinely publish profiles of five to eight students nominated by teachers, counselors and other leaders. A selection committee including representatives from Suburban Life Media and DuPage Credit Union then graded each student based on academ-
ic achievement, community involvement and extracurricular participation to determine who would win the coveted scholarships. The two winners, both Rachel nominated by their counKrusenoski selors, were shocked after seeing the amount of qualified nominees. Krusenoski – who has a 4.5 GPA and is involved in the school newspaper, as well as varsity cross country and track – believes it was her ability to focus only on activities she could put her heart into that helped elevate her to attain the scholarship. “Everything I try to pursue in these last four years is something I pursued with passion,” Krusenoski said. “In doing so I was able to put in a lot of effort and a lot of heart into what I was doing.”
Matysik – who has an ACT score of 35, is on the baseball team and is involved with Peer Leaders and National Honor Society – was initially unsure what made him stand out but attributes his success to participating in a wide variety of activities. “I don’t really know,” he said. “I mean I try to focus on being well rounded, whether it be school athletics, academics, like different clubs and stuff, community service.” Krusenoski plans to major in journalism at the University of Southern California and Matysik will study biochemistry at the University of Notre Dame. Suburban Life Media General Manager Laura Burke said she looks forward to continuing to honor young achievers through Suburban Life Scholars. Burke said in the future she would like to see a keynote speaker at the reception. “We want this to grow,” she said.

RAIN BARREL SALE
NOW THROUGH MAY 13, 2015 The Village of Downers Grove and The Conservation Foundation are teaming up to offer rain barrels for sale. Orders will be accepted through May 13, 2015. Rain barrels are large containers that capture rainwater at the end of a downspout and store the water for later use, for example in watering plants or washing cars. Using water from rain barrels lowers water bills, helps reduce flooding, and can have a dramatic impact on water quality in our rivers and streams. The 55-gallon barrels are made from reused plastic and come equipped with a spigot, a screw off lid, a garden hose threaded overflow, and screen in the top to help keep out bugs and debris. To Place An Order • All orders will be handled by third party vendor, Upcycle Products. • Place your order online (link available at www.downers.us), and pay via credit card. • The cost per barrel is $60.00, plus sales tax. • For questions about the sale, contact Dan Carlsen at 630-434-6811. • Rain barrels will be distributed at the Public Works Open House: Friday, May, 15, 2015, 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Public Works Facility, 5101 Walnut Ave Stormwater Utility Incentive As part of the stormwater utility, the Village has an incentive program to encourage residents to install rain barrels on their property. Qualifying properties will be provided a one-time reduction of $25 per property, to be applied toward the stormwater utility portion of a customer's utility bill. Incentive applications are available online at www.downers.us and at Village Hall and Public Works facilities. Village Council meetings are held the first, second, and third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Hall Council Chambers at 801 Burlington Avenue. Village Council meetings are broadcast live on DGTV-Ch. 6. The rebroadcast of these meetings can be seen Wednesday mornings at 9:00 a.m. and Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m

22 Breuder out, audit upcoming, reimbursements suspended at COD By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com The College of DuPage could be on its way to a “Clean Slate,” but the cleaning may not come too easy if the new Board of Trustee’s second meeting Thursday is any example. The board includes three new faces after the April election – Deanne Marie Mazzochi, Frank Napolitano and Charles Bernstein – united under a shared platform of reform and behind newly selected Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton. With the majority of the seven-member board on lock, the four pushed through an aggressive special meeting agenda that the three remaining trustees consistently voted against, citing a lack of transparency and inclusion in its drafting.
Breuder out
Early in the meeting, the board addressed one of the biggest elephants in the room: President Robert Breuder. The controversial leader has been in the limelight for months, first for a leaked email in July 2014 that advised trustees to find “politically attractive” ways to spend $20 million in state fund-
ing promised to the school. His tenure was later punctuated by the board’s approval of a $763,000 buyout for his early retirement in March 2016 and several DuPage County and federal subpoenas looking into his on-campus spending and that of trustees and administrators under his watch. Breuder beat the board to his proposed ouster, announcing April 28 he would be taking medical leave, but trustees still put him on administrative leave with pay during the meeting. New college attorney Tim Elliott, who also serves as a Glen Ellyn village trustee and has been involved in cases against the college twice in the past year, said the move gave the board control over the timing of Breuder’s return. College trustee Joseph Wozniak said he was voting down the measure not just in protest of lack of transparency, but also because he was “not going to kick a man when he’s down.” The passage of the vote, which included installing Executive Vice President Joseph Collins as acting interim president, was met with applause from the public.
Audits and legal action
The board also moved on several
looming issues regarding legislation and legal action against the school Thursday. After months of foot-dragging, trustees authorized a state-run audit of the school’s finances from 2009 to 2014 by the Illinois Auditor General’s Office. Earlier this year, several members of the General Assembly asked for the audit, including state Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton. Ives originally gave the college a March 12 deadline to accept terms for an audit dating to 2011 and agree to pay for the estimated $144,000 to $234,000 project. The board also authorized an internal investigation into the college’s accounts Thursday, directed staff to provide the board and college’s client files from several law firms, and formalized a litigation hold in light of the federal investigations against the school. Additionally, it hired new temporary legal counsel – Elliott’s Rathje & Woodward and Schuyler, Roche & Crisham – for the board. Both were retained to guide the board over the next four months, though the three old guard trustees questioned the latter’s hire, as one of its attorneys, Dan Kinsella, represented Hamilton after the
board censured her last year.
Suspended accounts The board has previously received criticism about lavish spending accounts held by Breuder and trustees, including several thousand dollars spent at campus restaurant Waterleaf, but it moved Thursday to suspend all travel and entertainment reimbursements for trustees as well as all “house” accounts on or off campus. When several trustees voiced concern, particularly student trustee Gloria Roark, Hamilton said the board would evaluate each case individually and that it represented a stop until the board looked over its policies. The board also hired a transition team led by Donald Haider, professor of strategy at the Kellogg School of Management. The team will guide new board members and possibly interim administrative leadership through the legal action against the college and recommend ways to improve operations and governance. Hamilton said she was already looking at filling it with volunteer local stakeholders from across the district.

vinaigrette. Grilled asparagus and pearl couscous were perfect complements. I am not normally a fan of fish (or asparagus, for that matter), but even I was impressed with the dish and the way it was presented. I set aside my desire for the bacon-and-blue-cheese-infused hamburger with truffled mayo and sampled the Cuban sandwich. The fresh ground mustard worked well with sweet pickles and the smokiness of the pork, all encased in a perfectly toasted Cuban roll, akin to French bread. For dessert, we tried the salted caramel cheesecake. It looked so much like ice cream we thought it would be cold, but it was light, fluffy and sweet with the right amount of salted caramel flavor on top of a toasty graham cracker crust. As chef Irvine noted on “Restaurant Impossible,” the food at Zest has always been

DOWNERS GROVE – A star turn on the Food Network show “Restaurant Impossible” spotlighted Lemon Tree Grocer in Downers Grove and the Zest Bistro located within, where the food has always been center stage. Celebrity chef Robert Irvine, host of the television program, said it was one of just a few times in years of filming the show that he actually enjoyed the food served at the outset. That’s high praise from a well-regarded chef who never hesitates to call it like he sees it. That there was nothing wrong with the menu in the first place was confirmed when my date and I recently paid a visit to Zest. Though we were both hungry, we asked our waiter to give us more time to peruse the choices, because every item sounded delectable. Before picking entrees, we decided to appease our appetites by ordering the short rib nachos appetizer. Thick and crunchy tortilla chips were the foundation for a great blend of flavors that ranged from the sweetness of the beef to the tang of Cotija cheese sauce and lime horseradish crema, with a hint of spiciness from fresh green chilies. We paired our appetizer with beverages. My date picked a beer from an impressive list of offerings by independent breweries, while I chose the Dark and Stormy Mule served in a copper mug. The rum-based drink did a dance on my taste buds with simple syrup and ginger beer leading the tango. Irvine’s signature pot roast, introduced to the menu after his recent visit to Downers Grove, must be a fan favorite, as Zest had just served the last of a roast made a bit earlier in the day and was in the process of cooking a second. My companion was slightly disappointed not to be able to try the dish, but that changed when her salmon entree arrived. The perfectly cooked fillet was coated in a honey mustard glaze and served with a sweet and savory orange mustard

Red Stars Down Sky Blue FC 1-0 in World Cup Send-Off
Colaprico scores first professional goal as Chicago stays unbeaten in 2015 Chicago, Illinois – – The National Women’s Soccer League’s (NWSL) Chicago Red Stars dominated and stayed unbeaten in their third match of the 2015 campaign on Saturday, defeating Sky Blue FC 1-0 behind rookie midfielder Danielle Colaprico’s first tally of her professional career. While the visitors from New Jersey were without all of their World-Cupbound players, the home match served as the Send-Off event for five of the eight Chicago stars who will be competing in this summer’s tournament in Canada. The Red Stars put pressure on their opponents early and created the first close look in the 5th minute, as defender Taryn Hemmings sprinted up the right wing and sent a dangerous ball to the far post. Teammate Vanessa DiBernardo was unfortunate to see her header from a tight angle sail just over the frame. A mere four minutes later, the hosts’ aggressive approach nearly paid off, DiBernardo coming close to stripping goalkeeper Brittany Cameron of the ball for what would have been a certain tally. Chicago had its next quality chance moments later. Former Virginia standout Colaprico sent Lori Chalupny down the left and the 31-year-old’s centering pass seemed destined to be tapped home at the doorstep. Instead, it evaded both defenders and attackers, trickling just wide of the far post. Red Stars striker Christen Press, who came into the game as the newly crowned NWSL Player of the Month for April, had two opportunities to open the scoring in the 18th minute. the first period, this time courtesy of Chalupny, who flew down the left and saw her low firsttime cross rifled just wide by Press. After an uneventful finish to the opening period, Chicago came out of the break with renewed urgency, and the persistence finally paid off in the 54th minute. Having hit teammate Julie Johnston in the face on her initial blast from just inside the box, Colaprico did everything right on the rebound, smashing a left-footed rocket past the outstretched arms of Cameron to make it 1-0. The crowd at Benedictine University subsequently had to wait until 15 minutes from full time for another quality opportunity, Chicago’s Chalupny exploding into the box on the left and rifling a laser beam on target that was guided over the bar by the fingertips of Cameron. Red Stars goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc made her best stop of the match in the 86th minute, leaving her feet and diving to her right to deny Hayley Haagsma’s dangerous header off an in-swinging free-kick from the wing. Cara Walls nearly sealed the deal for the hosts in stoppage time, as she found herself one-on-one with netminder Cameron, who pounced on a lapse in concentration to defuse the threat. It would be the day’s final close look, as the home side earned its second win of 2015. The Chicago Red Stars look to earn three more points when they take on Boston Breakers this coming Saturday in a doubleheader with MLS outfit Chicago Fire at Toyota Park in Bridgeview. Joe Donovan leads Westmont baseball from behind the plate
By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – Most underclassmen on a varsity baseball team would sit by and let seniors lead the way. Joe Donovan is not like most underclassmen. The Westmont High School sophomore is in his second season on the Sentinels’ varsity baseball team, but the way he carries himself is closer to the way a senior might do things. That shouldn’t come as much of a shock since Donovan has plenty of experience being teammates with older players. “I think I’ve always been comfortable because I played two years up on one of the highest rated [travel] teams in the nation, so I think I was acclimated to it from the start, and then just having a bunch of good teammates,” Donovan said. “Everybody is for everybody else’s success, and I think everybody works together.” Donovan has no nerves when it comes to playing against older competition, and he also has no hesitation being a vocal leader on the field. As the Sentinels’ catcher and defensive cornerstone, he needs to be a confident leader. It’s part of what he loves about playing the position. “It’s the best position on the field,” he said of the position he has played most of his life. “I think I just like the thought of calling pitches and having to know where everybody is, and you’re involved in every play so there’s no downtime.” One thing that is different this season compared to last is that Donovan now has even more control of the game. Aside from a few key situations during games, he is in charge of calling the game for the Sentinels, all while providing his typically solid defense. “Joe has been amazing for us,” Westmont head coach DJ Cocks said. “The way he is as a catcher,

On a lot of teams, those are passed balls and runs.” That Donovan is supremely comfortable on a baseball field should come as no surprise; baseball is a family affair. the state finals for a second straight season. “We’ve pretty much played catch in our front yard most every day since we were seven or eight. Just competing and being out there together, that’s comfortable for me,” Joe Donovan said of playing with his brother. “I know that I can always go talk to him and he come talk to me. It’s awesome.”

Downers Grove North goalkeeper Grace Stevenson makes a save Monday against Glenbard North. A freshman, Stevenson has been solid in net for the Trojans.
WILL TISCHLER Downers Grove South Volleyball | Senior Why Tischler was selected: The outside hitter had seven kills and three blocks in a West Suburban Gold victory against AT on April 28. Will Tischler, a 6-foot-7 senior outside hitter and member of the Mustangs’ 2013 state championship team, played big in a big match in the West Suburban Gold race April 28. His seven kills and three blocks led the team to a dominant 25-20, 25-14 win against Addison Trail on senior night. Both teams entered the match with undefeated records in conference. The Mustangs never trailed in the match. Coach Kurt Steuer praised the entire team, saying it was one of the best matches they played all season, but Tischler especially stood out. Tischler, the Sears Hardware & Appliance Athlete of the Week, talked to Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita after the match about the big win.
Tischler: Definitely our passing was extremely consistent because we were able to run all of our middles. We’ve been told this before, but when you can run all three hitters we’re a deadly team and I think we agree. We passed amazing. Our middles played amazing. Santaromita: Your coach said it was one of your best matches as a team. Do you agree? Tischler: I think so. Definitely. Throughout, going for balls and everything. Ups, touches, everything.
Santaromita: This was a big match in the conference race. What does it mean to you guys? Tischler: This is a huge con-
fidence booster. Just looking at

years older than me, but I knew it would be an experience that would really help me in the long run,” Stevenson said. Since then, Stevenson has not looked back and has shut out six of her last seven opponents. And although head coach Bob Calder knew he had an emerging talent before the season opener, even he is bit surprised at her level of play. “Grace has stepped up in a huge way and played really well for us,” Calder said. “It’s crazy, she’s given up nine goals in 15 games. She has an enormous upside and is among the multiple underclassman who are painting a really bright future for our soccer program.” One of four freshman on

DOWNERS GROVE – Grace Stevenson has proven she can play in the big leagues. In her first year on the varsity soccer team, the Downers Grove North freshman goalkeeper has started all 15 games this season for the Trojans, notching 10 shutouts and powering the girls to a 10-5 record. “The season has gone a lot better than expected; it’s been an incredible experience and the girls have been great mentors to me along the way,” Stevenson said. “This is an amazingly talented group of girls who are a lot of fun to play with, and my big sisters on the team, senior Kacey Ford and junior Arlinda Osmani, as well defender Alyse Dutcher have been a huge help on and off the field.” Before the beginning of the spring soccer season, Stevenson’s role on the team was in doubt. While she likely would have made the varsity squad, it would have been as a backup to last year’s starting keeper, Izzy Greenblatt. But when Greenblatt decided to not try out for the team this season, the starting netminder role was up for grabs. Stevenson said the coaching staff notified her right before tryouts that starting job was hers. “I was pretty excited. I knew it would be a really big challenge because most of my opponents would be a couple
the varsity roster this spring, Stevenson is used to playing up to her competition, as she was once a goalie on an allboys club team. “Playing on the Downers Grove Roadrunners boys team was definitely challenging and was a little bit of a different dynamic,” Stevenson said. “But it was good experience and I got to work on a more aggressive style of play, then bring that over to a different environment.” In addition to her mental fortitude, Stevenson also has the physical intangibles of a solid goalkeeper. At 5-foot9, she is listed as the tallest player on the Trojans’ roster, and has the wingspan that helps her cover all four corners of the net. Additionally, she has great range and athletic ability that is continually improving, according to Calder. She is also humble, attributing a portion of her success to the stingy Trojan defense. “The defense and mids have been unbelievable in front of me,” Stevenson said. “They were so great in bringing me up to speed in the beginning of the season, and since then we have come together really nicely as a unit.” DGN defeated Proviso West 8-0 Thursday, but could not keep the momentum going at the West Chicago Invite, falling 1-0 against Glenbard North in penalty kicks. The Trojans host Glenbard West for senior night on Thursday.
