He said the instant camera setup is ideal for children and pets who have a harder time standing still for 45 seconds. “We had a lady who had a dog about 14 years old at the end of its life,” he said. “She was flabbergasted; she got the same coloring of her muzzle, exactly as she is now.” He said he hopes to add about 55 more cameras to the instant scan setup so he’ll be able to capture full-grown adults instantly without both-

DOWNERS GROVE – Couples shopping for wedding cake toppers now have a much more life-like option than the generic, traditional plastic figurines. Thanks to 3-D scanning and printing technology, the miniature couple standing on top of the wedding cake can actually be an exact 3-D replica of the real bride and groom, down to the wrinkle of the dress or the swoop of their hair. Bodastone, a new downtown Downers Grove business, is offering the service as one of the first consumer 3-D scanning and printing businesses in the country. Owner Brian Atinaja said he learned about the idea this past year while planning his wedding with his wife, Mary. “It was difficult finding a bride and groom wedding topper because I’m Asian and she’s white,” he said. “So we went to Hobby Lobby and just painted the face.” Around the same time, he read about a German company offering 3-D scanning and printing. Being that the process has to be done in person, the European firms weren’t able to

ering with the turntable. The figurines are actually made off site by a 3-D printer the size of a Volkswagon, he said. “Historically, it’s been used by architectural firms to print out their new building concepts or in engineering to print out their prototype,” he said. One benefit of the turntable and single-camera setup is portability, and Atinaja sees many applications and markets beyond just weddings. For instance, Bodastone took the rig to a convention this weekend to capture comic book fanatics dressed as their favorite characters. Later this month, Bodastone will be at the DuPage County Fair. Another example is a couple who had casts of their newborn’s feet and hands. The casts were falling apart, so they took them to Bodastone for a replica before they further disintegrated. “If someone wanted a fullsize bust of their head, we could do that, too,” he said. “My long-term vision would be this replaces, or becomes, the next photograph. That when somebody gets dressed up and works with a professional photographer, they’d rather have a 3-D sculpture.”

OSLAD grant could transform Westmont park By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – The Westmont Park District is looking to fund a Wilmette Avenue Park development project with a state issued, Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant. The 4.76-acre park, which borders South Wilmette Avenue from Scott Court to Hidden View Drive, was owned by resident Anthony Kuzminski until December 2013, when it was purchased by the park district for $600,000. The Westmont Park District communicated their interest to purchase the land in 1998, according Superintendent of Parks and Planning Bob Fleck. Although the sale never came to fruition then, a right of first refusal allowed the helped broker a deal 14 years later. “It’s something we have had our eye on for a long

About OSLAD grants The OSLAD program is a state-financed grant program which provides funding assistance to local government agencies for acquisition and/ or development of land for public parks and open space. Projects vary from small neighborhood parks or tot lots to large community and county parks and nature areas. The state program is financed by a percentage of the state’s Real Estate Transfer Tax. For information and to view the project renderings, visit www.westmontparks.org. time,” Fleck said. “This is one of the last parcels in the area that had not been sold into real estate. We are hoping that we can secure an OSLAD grant to use the land to its potential

and enhance the natural beauty.” An area replete with rolling hills, mature trees, a pond and a wetland area, Fleck called the property “one of the prettiest lots left in the community.” Working together with the village, which own the adjacent two-acre plot, the park district wants to transform the area into a public park, encompassing sanctioned wetland, fishing pond, playground, picnic tables and a gazebo and a boardwalk leading to the pier. Ideally, the natural integrity of the land will remain intact. “We want to preserve and enhance all the natural features of this park,” Fleck said. “We want to protect these large, beautiful tress, and we want to maintain this nice, rolling topography that looks like a meadow. We want to

work with nature, not work against it.” Fleck unveiled initial project renderings June 24 during a public presentation. He not only detailed design elements but also discussed the grant funding and application process. OSLAD grants are state funded and issued by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, providing financial assistance to local government agencies for acquisition and/or development of land for public parks and open space. Applicants can obtain funding assistance up to 50 percent of approved project costs; a grant can range up to $750,000 for acquisition projects, while development or renovation projects are limited to a $400,000 grant maximum. Now more than ever, competition to obtain and OSLAD grant is amplified, according

to Fleck. “When OSLAD grants first came out, it was a new process that not everybody knew about,” Fleck said. “Throughout the years, park districts have realized this is a wonderful way to complete desired projects while spending just 50 cents on the dollar.” Conversely, Fleck said there will be $24 million in grant money issued this year, up about $10 million from the previous years. The Westmont Park District submitted its Wilmette Avenue Park project proposal July 1. The Department of Natural Resources will make first cuts in the fall, and remaining applicants will then present to the department thereafter. Grant recipients will be announced in the spring of 2015. If awarded the funds, the Westmont Park District would finalize plans for a $900,000 project next summer.

LEUKOPLAKIA Q: What is leukoplakia? A: Leukoplakia is the name given to a thick patch caused by excessive cell growth that can form on the inside of the cheeks or on the gum tissue or tongue. The patch is whitish in color and is not easily scraped off. The excessive cell growth can be caused by irritation from a person’s habit of biting the inside of the cheek, or from an improperly fitting denture. Tobacco, whether chewed or smoked, can also contribute to the development of leukoplakia. The danger with leukoplakia is that it can be a precursor to cancer. Your dentist may want to take a biopsy - a tissue sample - to send for pathology analysis. You can reduce your chances of developing leukoplakia by avoiding tobacco and alcohol and, of course, by visiting your dentist regularly. Regular visits help with the early detection of many conditions. And with cancer in particular, early detection is critical. Be on the lookout for any changes in your mouth, including any lumps, sores that won’t heal, rough spots or small eroded areas. Changes in color are also important. Lesions that turn red or white should be reported to your dentist immediately, as should any pain or numbness in the mouth or lips, and any difficulty speaking, chewing or swallowing. Talk with your dentist about leukoplakia and about other potentially dangerous developments that can take place in your mouth.

Microbreweries may come to Westmont By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – The Westmont Village Board unanimously approved a text amendment updating the zoning code regulations to allow microbreweries and brew pubs in the B-2 general business district. A public hearing soon will be held to gauge residents’ opinions on the topic. The B-2 district is intended for portions of the village where highway-oriented retail business establishments are deemed appropriate, as well as general business activity, according to the village of Westmont Municipal Code. The text amendment was prompted by a recent discussion with a local retailer who

expressed a desire to expand their operation to accommodate a microbrewery, according to Westmont Village Planner Jill Ziegler. While the microbrewery would be supplemental to the existing business, microbrew operations involve brewing beer and often shipping the product to other locations. Historically, microbreweries have been in the village’s manufacturing (M) district, Ziegler said. “We think that larger, more typical breweries should remain in the M-district,” Ziegler said. “But these microbreweries and brew pubs would be ancillary to the retail.” However, over the past decade, microbreweries, brew pubs and the culture

surrounding microbrews have grown increasingly popular. Today, microbreweries are defined as a brewery producing less than 15,000 barrels of beer a year with 75 percent or more of its beer sold off site. Brew pubs are a hybrid restaurant-brewery selling 25 percent or more of its beer on site, typically in a bar/restaurant setting. As several Westmont officials mentioned, microbreweries could create some concerns about increased noise, odor, vehicle activity and traffic. Additionally, the board determined that a microbrewery’s alcohol sales could not exceed 50 percent. A date has yet to be set for the public hearing.

Unlocking the Keys to Pain SPONSORED BY

By Erin Sauder When it comes to addressing pain, there’s only one goal: relief. And to find that relief, Dr. A. Tony Chami, Medical Director at the Chicagoland Advanced Pain Specialists, said a team may need to be assembled that includes a holistic health specialist, physical or psychological therapists, and advanced systemic or surgical healthcare professionals. “In a multidisciplinary approach, your healthcare team tailors individualized plans based on evaluations from multiple perspectives,” Chami said. “Medical studies show (this approach) can yield improved results in pain care.” The team method begins with the patient’s primary or family physician, though any member of the team can initiate it. “Your primary physician knows your health history most intimately and should be your first stop for relief of incidental pain problems,” Chami said.

way your primary care physician follows your treatment,” Chami said. “You’ll still get a prescription for a visit to the specialist. However, instead of learning results of his referral at your next visit, you’ll find your doctor actively engaged in the specialist’s perspective, communicating with your team more regularly and knowledgeable about the results of specialized evaluations well in advance of your next visit.” Some of those benefits include improved coordination of medication and holistic therapies, minimally invasive procedures that can improve physical therapy performance, improved surgical outcomes that last for longer periods, faster return to work and activities of daily living, less time spent communicating between medical specialists, and fewer medical errors as a result of better communication between specialists. “While pain may be a reality, effective pain management doesn’t have to be a fantasy,” Chami said. “The multi-disciplinary approach is gaining in popularity and the primary philosophy at Chicagoland Advanced Pain Specialists.” Chicagoland Advanced Pain Specialists 700 E. Announcement made at annual EDC luncheon

DOWNERS GROVE – Advocate Health Care plans to build a $78 million expansion of its Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove later this year, hospital president Dave Fox announced Thursday at the Downers Grove Economic Development Corporation’s annual luncheon. Good Samaritan’s parent company, Advocate Healthcare, also received one of three 2014 Cornerstone Awards given at the luncheon to businesses who completed impactful economic development projects in Downers Grove in the past year. About a year ago, Advocate moved its corporate headquarters and 600 employees to its new 140,000 square-foot office in Downers Grove. The other two Cornerstone Awards were given to the

the north end of the hospital campus on Highland Avenue. It would contain 96 rooms, Fox said. Upon completion in late 2016 or early 2017, all of Good Samaritan Hospital’s existing semiprivate rooms will be converted into private rooms, resulting in an all-private room campus. “An all-private room hospital is really what the community … expects in DuPage county,” Fox said at the luncheon. “So we’re excited about that.” Preceding the awards, Downers Grove Economic De-

velopment Corporation President and CEO Michael Cassa provided a long rundown of recent or upcoming additions to the Downers Grove business landscape, including the new Starbucks on Ogden Avenue, and Sanford’s move to office space in the Esplanade II office building at 3500 Lacey Road. Sanford makes Sharpie markers, among other products. Other new and future additions include the Art Van furniture store on Butterfield Road; CompuSystems, which plans to move its headquarters from Broadview to Warren-

ville Road; Fresh Thyme Farmers markets, which is planning a store for 321 Ogden Ave.; and Angelo Caputo’s Fresh market, which opened Friday at 42 Ogden Ave. “We will continue to market our community and be that location for corporate and business headquarters,” Cassa said. Cassa also said developers have purchased the old Carlson’s Paint building at 5216 Main St. and plan to redevelop the first floor into restaurant space and add a second floor for the new home to Oakley Home Builders.

Grammatical error not the biggest worry with ballot question A bit of hay is being made over a grammar error which will appear on the ballot this November. It seems no one caught the improper use of the word “their” in the text of the proposed ballot question. The measure asks, “Should the Illinois Constitution be amended to require that each school district receive additional revenue, based VIEWS on their number of students, Scott from an additional 3% tax Reeder on income greater than one million dollars?” Of course, to be grammatically correct, the word “its” should be used instead of “their” because “each school district” is singular. I can see 100 copy editors I’ve known clucking their tongues in unison and shaking their heads. My old high school English teacher Miss Finch will probably enter the voting booth, red pen in hand, ready to correct the ballot and hand it back to the election judge marked “F.” Illinois is a place where legislators talk about raising literacy standards – but don’t practice them. But the problem with the question goes beyond grammar. First of all, the question doesn’t specify what sort of income should be taxed. Are we talking about gross income? Or are we talking net income? Are they talking about corporate income or personal income? The measure doesn’t specify. And, of course, those things are important. A lot of businesses may take in more than $1 million in annual income but still lose money. For example, a farmer may sell more than $1 million in corn, but after he pays his landlord his rent, spends money on seed, fertilizer, herbicides, machinery and interest on loans, he may well end up in the red. Lots of other small business people find themselves in the same predicament. But would this proposal add another cost to doing business for already struggling firms? We don’t know because it doesn’t specify whether it a tax on gross income or net income. But one thing we do know is the more we tax folks who create jobs, the fewer jobs there will be.

Thumbs up to Westmont resident Jenny Maison for opening her Blue Beaker store June 21. After several successful years operating out of an Ottawa storefront, Maison decided to move her business and her family to Westmont. Not only is Maison a local small business owner, but Blue Beaker features a one-of-a-kind selection of soaps and lip balms she makes herself. We commend your entrepreneurial spirit and wish you the best of luck in your new business venture. Thumbs up to Westmont resident Barbara Roos again for organizing the annual Angel Haven sale, one of the largest white elephant sales in the village. Held this past weekend at the West Hills Community Church, the Angel Haven sale featured everything from toys to gently used clothes and even furniture. Best of all, the proceeds benefit about 200 marginalized families living in the Appalachian Mountains.

Lee stopped to help me. When I went in to see my doctor, he went to the hardware store and got wire and a magnet. When that didn’t work, he and I used a paper clip to make a hook. We were able to fish out my rental car keys from that. So, I just wanted to thank Lee for his help and remind people to be careful when they’re carrying their keys in their hand.

In response to Mr. Hughes’ call for more money for the VA, I suggest he get his facts straight. Since 2011, Hines VA Hospital in Cook County spent $1 billion on salaries and $4 million on bonuses. With all that taxpayer money, veterans still had trouble seeing a doctor. Instead of increasing the number and quality of hospital care staff, Obama administration officials created more bureaucracy at taxpayer expense. It’s not [a] question of money, but a systemic leadership problem. Instead of constantly throwing money the government doesn’t have at a problem, let’s hold people accountable. Oh wait, that doesn’t happen when you’re a public sector employee.

Autoimmune condition? Living with an autoimmune disorder can afect every part of your life. It keeps you from enjoying the good things in life… time with your kids, grandkids, activities like goling, biking, yard work and gardening. Did you know that leaky gut syndrome is a precursor to an autoimmune disease? Did you know that your gut makes up 80% of your immune system? An autoimmune disorder is when your immune system attacks your own body. here is NO CURE for autoimmune disorders, but you can calm down the immune response NATURALLY. My name is Dr. Jefrey E Forzley, with Lemont Natural Healthcare. I am a chiropractic physician and a holistic practitioner. I am passionate about helping people with chronic health conditions. I have been in practice for 28 years. As a holistic practitioner I evaluate the whole body and the many systems of the body, integrate their relationships, manage the underlying cause and use natural methods to manage autoimmune disorders.

Are you sufering with any of these autoimmune disorders? • Hashimotos hroiditis • Rheumatoid Arthritis • Graves Disease • Multiple Sclerosis • Scleroderma • Sjogren’s Syndrome • Type 1 Diabetes • Myasthenia Gravis • Ankylosing Spondylitis • Perniscious Anemia

• Lupus • ALS • Psoriasis • Vasculitis • Celiac Disease • Crohn’s Disease • Addison’s Disease • Urticaria (Hives) • Eczema • Raynauds

Medications are not always the long term answer. Medications can give you temporary relief but they DO NOT ADDRESS THE UNDERLYING CAUSE of your immune imbalance. All medications have side efects. hese side efects can be more detrimental than the original symptoms sometimes.

Did you know that medications to treat autoimmune conditions can WEAKEN your immune system and lead to infections and immune degenerative conditions including cancer? here is a time to use medications but not before a NATURAL way to manage the underlying imbalance. So how do I help people with autoimmune disorders? I use a combination of speciic NEUROLOGICAL protocols and NUTRITION recommendations… Neuro-Metabolic herapy. Your Brain (nervous System) controls all other systems of the body. It controls your immune system. digestive system, endocrine (hormone) system… so if you have an immune system imbalance or autoimmune condition, evaluating and managing the nervous system is required for optimal improvement.

Your immune system. here are 2 parts to the front line defense of your immune system… TH1 (white blood cells) and TH2 (antibody response). hese 2 parts should work in balance together. But when you are sufering from an autoimmune disorder, one part is out of balance (dominant). his leads to an imbalance in TH3 which in turn leads to an autoimmune response.

Testimonials I was diagnosed with Graves Disease (autoimmune thyroid) three years ago. My endocrinologist recommended surgery to remove my thyroid and put me on medication for the rest of my life. I searched for an alternative treatment to save my thyroid and found Dr. Forzley. hrough comprehensive lab testing he found out what was causing my immune system to attack my thyroid. I have been receiving treatments and following his recommendations exactly and my lab numbers are now normal, my endocrinologist is happy, my medication has been reduced in half and I feel better. I highly recommend Dr. Forzley and his natural approach. Samantha R. I sufered from unbearable itching caused by Hives (chronic autoimmune Urticaria) for over 33 years. Steroid medications helped the symptoms temporarily but the side efects were bad. Ater an in-depth blood and metabolic analysis, Dr. Forzley found the cause of my problem. Ater 4-5 months of strictly following his recommendations, my hives are completely gone and I feel great. Cheryl P. If your immune system is not managed properly, your condition can worsen, result in a poor quality of life, cause a shortening of the length of your life and cause other autoimmune disorders. Holistic herapy can manage autoimmune conditions by: 1) inding and balancing the underlying cause. 2) lowering the self destructive efects of the immune system. 3) using natural therapies that work with your body.

I can work with your immune system NATURALLY and balance the TH1, TH2, TH3 and TH17. You can never be cured of an autoimmune disorder. BUT, you can get symptom relief and calm down the immune attack on you own body. You must get a detailed immune system evaluation followed by speciic recommendation based on those tests. Guess what stimulates TH1?Vitamin C. But if you are TH1 dominant, Taking vitamin C will WORSEN your immune response. hat’s right worsen. We need to identify which part of your immune system is dominant in order to calm down the immune system. I don’t treat or cure autoimmune disorders. By using speciic neurological and nutritional protocols, I help to decrease your body’s inlammation, detoxify your body, balance TH1, TH2, TH3 and TH17 which NATURALLY boosts your immune system. THAT is how I address autoimmune disorders.

Sheriff, drug treatment center team up to teach dangers of overdosing By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Last July, more than a dozen people died from heroin – the high point in a year with a record-breaking 46 overdose deaths. Those numbers spurred legislation and action from the state level down, particularly with regards to education. Recently, the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office and the Winfield addiction treatment facility Stonybrook Center teamed up to target some of the residents most vulnerable to fatal overdoses: inmates at the DuPage County Jail. “If someone stays two months, gets out, and tries to use the same amount as when they were incarcerated, they are most likely to overdose,” DuPage County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Bureau Chief Shawana Davis said. Davis said the office has implemented a new hourlong voluntary class to educate offenders on the dangers of drug use and the risks of overdose. She said the average length of stay for inmates at the county jail is 24 days, and it is there they go through opiate detox and withdrawal.

“The best way to avoid an overdose is not to use. The main focus is to educate them to be aware of overdosing and how to avoid them and how to avoid relapse situations.” Shawana Davis DuPage County Sherrif’s Office Corrections Bureau Chief Stonybrook Owner and Program Director Cookie Walter said it only takes four days without opiates for addicts’ tolerance to recede. When they try to use the same amount of drugs they did before withdrawal, their bodies can’t process it, often leading to overdoses, she said. Davis said a 2007 study conducted in Washington state found the risk of death among recently released inmates was 3.5 times higher than that of other state residents and was 12.7 times higher within the first two weeks. During that time, the leading cause of death was overdose, the study said. That makes education during incarceration critical, she said. Walter said Stonybrook took up the sheriff’s office’s partnership offer after sever-

al patients from the center’s methadone program spent time in jail and fatally overdosed before returning to the facility. “So we knew the risk was very pronounced and needed to be addressed, so we were happy to be invited to do the class,” she said. Davis said the class involves a pre- and post-test on overdose and drug use, and teaches offenders where to get help upon release, as well as some of the science behind addiction and overdose. The class’s goal is to encourage abstinence, she said “The best way to avoid an overdose is not to use,” she said. “The main focus is to educate them to be aware of overdosing and how to avoid them and how to avoid relapse situations.” Stonybrook has led the

class twice a week since May 21, Walter said, with eight to 10 people attending each session. As of a few weeks ago, nearly a third of the inmates in the class had overdosed previously, she said. Walter compared the class to sex education. The focus is on getting them not to use and to enter treatment, but many times addicts are not ready. The hope is to help them live long enough to get to that point, she said. “A mother of a boy who died said to me ‘As long as they’re breathing and they’re alive, there’s hope,’” she said. “But when they die, hope dies with them. ... With alcohol, with heroin, with whatever, that person has to come willingly to the table and say, ‘Now I’m ready for a change.’ Because trying to force them doesn’t generally work.” Walter said she would like to see the class become mandatory for those in the criminal justice system for drug charges, and both Walter and Davis hope to expand the class to include friends and families of inmates so they, too, can understand of the signs and symptoms of addiction and overdose.

al theories regarding whether the trend will continue, grow or reverse, in addition to profiling other young adults in similar positions to Kasinecz. She said the decision to move home was motivated by financial means, her mother’s struggle with cancer and the promise of figuring out what she wants to pursue. While the Downers Grove resident is working for a project management group, she said after five years at home, she’s no closer to finding a long-term plan. “I have a great roommate, if you want to call her that,” Kasinecz said. “And it’s become really comfortable. I think it does become a crunch sometimes. I’m trying to get in the habit of saving. I’m trying to improve myself all around.” In the meanwhile, she’s started a website, BoomerangAnnie.com, that she hopes to help guide college bound students toward more prosperous future. “I want to be an advocate for this issue,” she said. “I want to create a public forum where (young people) can come ask questions about ‘Where do I find resources for student debt. Should I take out student debt.’” Kasinecz added she now owns her past decisions and is no longer embarrassed when she tells a date or friend she lives at home. That thick skin was necessary to read some harsh user comments regarding the New York Times story. “I don’t have the time for the negativity,” she said. “Yes, I have chosen this path to move back home. Maybe I could have not taken out these loans. I’m going to take the situation as it is, learn from it and try and rise above it.”

Village of Downers Grove 1.630.434.5500 • www.downers.us Mayor Martin T. Tully Commissioners: Sean Patrick Durkin, Geoff Neustadt, Robert T. Barnett, Becky Rheintgen, David S. Olsen, Greg Hosé Village Manager David Fieldman The “Village Corner” is edited and published by the Village of Downers Grove. Any questions concerning the content of this page should be directed to the phone number referenced in the article. If a number is not listed in the article, please call the Community Response Center at 1.630.434.CALL (2255). Meeting dates, times, locations and agendas are subject to change. Check the Village website at www.downers.us and DGTV Channel 6 for the most current meeting information.

All events will be held on July 4. Parade The parade begins at 12:45 p.m. at Main and Grant Streets and travels south on Main Street, ending at Warren Avenue. Parade Participant Information If you are marching in the parade, check this website for staging information: http://events.downers.us. Fireworks Show Sponsored by the Village of Downers Grove and Village of Woodridge. The fireworks begin at approximately 9:30 p.m. at 75th Street and Lemont Road. Holiday Garbage Collection Garbage collection for residents with a Friday collection will be on Saturday, July 5, due to the Friday holiday. Village Offices Most Village offices will be closed on Friday, July 4. Illegal Fireworks Fireworks are illegal in Downers Grove and in Illinois. The Downers Grove Municipal Code mirrors that of the Illinois State Fireworks Code, which means that firecrackers, bottle rockets, cherry bombs, and the like are prohibited. Though one can easily purchase fireworks legally in adjacent states, it is illegal to bring them home across the border. Any person convicted of an offense shall be subject to a fine of between $75.00 and $750.00. Legal firework novelties such as sparklers, fountains, snakes, party poppers, and ground spinners, marketed as “safe,” still pose dangers. About one quarter of emergency room fireworks injuries occur from July 2 to July 5. The risk of fireworks injury is more than twice as high for children ages 10-14 as for the general population. Children as young as 2 years old are commonly handed sparklers which reach temperatures of 1,200 to 1,800 degrees, hot enough to cause third-degree burns. Please have a fun and safe holiday weekend.

ELECTRONICS RECYCLING Saturday, July 5, 2014 9:00 a.m. to noon

The Village and Creative Recycling offers electronics recycling on the first Saturday of every month, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. The drop-off location is at Village Hall, 801 Burlington Avenue, in the employee parking lot at the rear of the building, off of Curtiss Street. For a list of accepted items please visit www.downers.us. TVs, computers, laptops, monitors, printers, computer peripherals, VCR/DVD players, gaming systems, MP3 players, and other electronic items are banned from Illinois landfills.

JULY 4 TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT CAMPAIGN The Downers Grove Police Department is participating in a yearlong initiative that focuses on impaired driving and seat belt enforcement on specific holidays, including the July 4 holiday. Officers will be working saturation patrols that target impaired drivers and seat belt enforcement zones. The July 4 holiday period is one of the deadliest times for traffic crashes due to a rise in impaired driving. Last year during this period, 540 people were killed in traffic crashes; in addition, there were 58,000 injuries associated with traffic crashes during the same time. Drinking and driving played a major role in these crashes. While these fatalities are devastating, they are fully preventable. • Plan a safe way home before the fun begins. Before drinking, designate a sober driver. • If you see a drunk driver on the road, call 9-1-1 and report their location immediately. • Wear safety belts – every trip, every seat location, every time – it’s the best defense against a drunk driver. • Finally, remember – Buzzed Driving IS Drunk Driving.

FREE WOODCHIPS The Village has free woodchips available at a fenced, pickup site located on the north side of Curtiss Street at the intersection of Katrine Street. Hours are dawn to dusk, Monday-Friday, and from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Residents are welcome to take the amounts they need using their own transport and containers. Village Council meetings are held the first, second, and third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Hall Council Chambers at 801 Burlington Avenue. Village Council meetings are broadcast live on DGTV-Ch. 6. The rebroadcast of these meetings can be seen Wednesday mornings at 9:00 a.m. and Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. Live radio broadcasts of Council meetings can only be heard at 7:00 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of the month on WDGC-FM, 88.3. Podcast and live streaming coverage of Council meetings are also available at www.downers.us. Individuals with a disability requiring a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in any meeting should contact the ADA Coordinator at 630.434.5525, prior to the meeting. Wheelchair access is available through the south entrance of Village Hall. 7/2/14

DuPage Woodworkers Club talking shop By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Since he was 4-years-old, Keith Rosche of Wheaton has loved the smell of wood. “I grew up on a farm, so my first birdhouse was a fun thing,” he said. “I absolutely fell in love with it.” Now, he serves as program chairman for the DuPage Woodworkers Club, a regional group brought together by a shared love of talking shop and working with wood. The club has more than 175 members, with an average of 75 attending its monthly meetings. Roche admitted the group is a little homogeneous – most are older men, although there are some exceptions. Their diversity comes from their varying experience levels, member Rich Rossio said. “We’re really well-rounded from beginner to expert,” he said. “We’ve got a couple members who have been published in Fine Woodworking magazine. We even have somebody who just started, a young fellow who I think is 13- or 14-years-old.” Rossio said attracting not only more but younger or inexperienced members is an area of focus for the club and something they have succeeded in during the past several years. A little over a decade ago, they met in a classroom at the College of DuPage until they outgrew the space. Unlike some other woodworking organizations he has encountered, the club takes pride in creating a friendly environment, Rossio said. Those who have been doing it a while – some their whole lives – embrace those trying woodworking for the first time. “We like to see the new, whether it be a kid or a middle-aged person looking for more info,” he said. “We like to share it with them. And I might not have all the information, but when you have 60 people in a room, that answer is there. “It’s like if you are a golfer or anything else – if you have somebody to show you the right way, it lessens the learning curve.” At each meeting, the club has a “show-and-tell” section

Join the club Meetings are from 7 to 9 p.m. the fourth Wednesday of every month at St. James Church, 480 S. Park Blvd., Glen Ellyn. For information, visit www. dupagewoodworkers.org.

“I can honestly say I’ve never gone to a meeting where I haven’t come home with an idea of something new to try.” Rich Rossio DuPage Woodworkers Club member

where members display what they’ve been working on for the past month and talk about how they did it. “I can honestly say I’ve never gone to a meeting where I haven’t come home with an idea of something new to try,” Rossio said. They then usually have a presentation about woodworking, often showcasing a certain style or technique. The club has featured a wood spoon carver from Milwaukee and a Forest Preserve District of DuPage County representative who talked about the woodworking of original settlers in the 1850s. At their past meeting June 25, they welcomed Rohan Ward, who spoke about being asked by President Barack Obama to make a table as a gift for French President Francois Hollande. The club also is active in the community, creating more than 4,000 toys over the past two years to donate to local charities during the holiday season. “It’s a good place for somebody who doesn’t do woodworking but wants to learn about doing more repairs around the house,” Rossio said. “Over the years, I’ve seen clubs where they strictly consider themselves experts, but there’s nothing I like better than seeing someone and helping them get started and seeing them be better than me after a few years.”

Restaurant reviews

Cooper’s Corner stakes claim on big flavor WINFIELD – When friends recommended Cooper’s Corner, we decided to pay a visit to the restaurant that opened earlier this year in the spot that once housed the venerable Viking. We walked in on a Friday night to the sound of live music and were offered a choice of seating in the expansive lounge near the band or one of the dining rooms. We opted for the dining room closest to the bar for a happy medium. The space is updated, yet preserves classic old-school steakhouse charm with large booths, banquettes, tables with comfy chairs and lots of elbow room. And while the chef puts plenty of emphasis on roast beef, steak and other red meat dishes, there’s a healthy accent on seafood, pastas, freshly prepared crab cakes, sandwiches and other options that make the decision of what to order pleasurably conflicted. We opted to try the stuffed sesame portabella appetizer, which complemented the meaty mushroom with goat cheese, caramelized onion, and roasted red pepper that popped. “It’s an interesting blend of flavors and textures,” raved my date. We each chose soup over salad: a creamy clam chowder and a baked onion. The latter was good, but a tad salty. My selection of an entree became easy when I spotted the slow-roasted prime rib featured at the top of the menu, and chose the smallest of the three portion choices. It arrived rare per my request, and was sublimely tender and juicy. Its side dish was a superb mix of sauteed zucchini, broccoli, carrot, squash and onion cooked al dente. My companion chose one of the evening’s specials: the baked berry Florentine stuffed pork loin. The fruit topping made it a memorable dish. A massive portion, we enjoyed it for lunch the next day.

Cooper’s Corner proves a great new addition to the dining scene in the Winfield and Wheaton area.

Cooper’s Corner n Where: 27W150 Roosevelt

Road, Winfield n Hours: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday; 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday; 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday; bar open later n Dress code: Casual n Info: 630-690-2668, www. cooperscorner.com

The tasty baked berry Florentine stuffed pork loin was one of the evening’s specials. Among many temptations, I look forward to trying the other dish I’d considered: pork short ribs with barbecue sauce, and a smoky hint of chipotle peppers. The restaurant, open for lunch and dinner, features daily early-bird enticements, and highlights salads prepared with locally sourced produce. The menu notes that the pastas are finished with specially aged cheese. Such attention to detail was evident

We did not leave enough room for one of the homemade desserts suggested by a friend, whose comment about the grilled shrimp entree she enjoyed on a previous visit was an enthusiastic “Yummy.” We second the sentiment. Cooper’s Corner, with its large parking lot, is easy to find on Roosevelt Road on the border between Winfield and

Wheaton, and well worth a trip for a relaxing experience, deliciously fresh ingredients, friendly service and the added option of hitting the dance floor Fridays and Saturdays. The weekend acts range from blues and R&B to jazz and Rat Pack favorites. The lounge also is home to a piano bar with a vocalist Thursdays, and every other Thursday, Cooper’s Corner

TOP 5 SPRING SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS FOR DOWNERS GROVE SOUTH

Mustangs win conference on diamond Downers grove south gymnastics track, tennis teams find success By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The spring sports season has concluded and with it the school year. Now is the perfect time to take one more look at the best moments from the spring sports season for Downers Grove South.

1. Baseball’s best

An undefeated run through the West Suburban Gold conference was just the beginning for South’s baseball team, which went on to capture regional and sectional crowns and push highly regarded St. Rita to the limit before falling 2-1 in the supersectional game. Hard play came to define the Mustangs and their playoff run this season. “We played one of the best ballgames we’ve ever played right here,” said Zac Taylor, a senior and three-year varsity starter, after the season-ending loss. “We left our hearts out on the field.” Taylor, fellow three-year starter Joe Becht and seniors Chris Pedrak, Danny Spinuzza and Matt Zinnecker were regulars who set the tone for the team. which enjoyed its best playoff run ever. The previous time South reached the supersectional was in 2005, but the 2014 team enjoyed a deeper playoff advancement. Supersectional games used to be played among the final 16 teams. The final eight teams in each class advance to supersectionals. “This group, this team, it was a special group of kids,” head coach Darren Orel said. “They played their hearts our for each other.”

2. Smashing success

Like their baseball diamond counterparts, the Mus-

tangs of the softball diamond went undefeated in conference play, but there were more highlights to come later. South outscored its two opponents in the regional round of the playoffs 17-1 to cruise to the title, then knocked crosstown rival Downers Grove North out of the playoffs, winning the sectional semifinal 7-4. The Mustangs could accomplish a lot more in the near future. The loss of seniors like Jess Andree, Caitlyn Daly, Dana Kremer and Melissa Orton will sting, but pitchers Caroline Hedgcock and Payton Buresch are among several starters slated to return.

3. Major statement

South’s boys tennis team enjoyed its best showing ever in the state tournament as it finished fourth overall, and the highlights went beyond place. The 19 matches the Mustangs won were their most ever, and all six athletes who played in the tournament earned all-state honors. Tony Leto went 6-2 in the singles bracket and finished sixth. Christian San Andres was 5-2 in singles and earned a top-12 finish. The doubles teams of Mitch Plys and Lawrence Hiquiana and Ryan McMillan and Zach Wood both went 4-2.

Downers Grove South’s Dominic Tommasone competes on the parallel bars during the state meet at Hinsdale Central. Tommasone was top 10 in three events and 11th in the all-around.

4. Right on track

South athletes made their names known at the girls state track meet in May. Sophomore Michaela Hackbarth qualified for state in two events and had a stellar showing in one of them, placing second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:13.0 Senior Abby Kargol went out with a bang, setting new personal and school records in the 3,200 run as she finished fifth with a time of 10:50.04.

Dominic Tommasone was young, being a freshman at South, but age was no hurdle for him at the state gymnastics

meet as he notched three top-10 finishes. He was sixth on vault (9.250), seventh on pommel horse (8.50) and 10th on parallel bars (7.95). He also placed 11th in the all-around (49.70).

Toni Kukoc takes a quick break from working with young basketball players during his camp held at the Bulls/Sox Academy in Lisle last week. The former Chicago Bulls star has turned into an avid golfer in retirement.

Q&A

Retirement life ‘is perfect’ for former Bull By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com

Kukoc career highlights

Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen endure as all-time great players for the Chicago Bulls. However, Toni Kukoc earned his own spot in Bulls’ lore in 1994 when he hit a buzzer-beater to defeat the New York Knicks in a playoff game. That was near the end of the his rookie season, after which he went on to play in Chicago until the 1999-2000 season. Kukoc officially retired from professional basketball in 2006, but he was back on the court this past week hosting and coaching a camp at the Bulls/Sox Academy in Lisle. He took time from working with camp participants to speak with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi about the camp, his retirement, his native Croatia’s involvement in the World Cup, and his famous last-second shot.

n 3-time Euroleague champi-

Rossi: What has kept you busy in retirement? Kukoc: Not much. Play a

little golf and watching basketball. That’s pretty much it. Life is perfect. I became like a golf addict, so as long as the weather is nice I can go and golf. Rossi: What are your thoughts on the camp? Kukoc: It’s a fun time for the kids. We’re trying to work on fundamentals of the game and teaching them to play the right way and have fun while doing it. Rossi: What’s the biggest fundamental you try and get across to the kids? Kukoc: There’s a theme [to

the camp] and it’s listening. Just listening to the coaches and trying to put all that we say back onto the court. It’s easy to forget after five minutes what the coach said and just do it the easy way or do it your own way, but we’re trying to get them to listen to the little details we put in their ears and get them to put it back on the court. Rossi: What was it like playing for the Bulls when they were at their peak? Kukoc: I don’t want to say it was easy; it was hard, but at the same time it was a lot of fun just for the fact that the expectations were high and the ultimate goal of winning a championship was the only goal. Everything else was a failure. It was a high standard, but it wasn’t something where the goal was put so high that it wasn’t reachable. So we came to the first day of camp with the idea that if we played together and put our minds in the same place that our goal was achievable,

and it was, three times. Rossi: What do you miss most about playing? Kukoc: The competitive nature of it that we all had. In golf, the U.S. Open or the World Cup in soccer, you see how much the guys want it, how much they grind for it, how much the fans are into it and that’s when that competitive spirit of mine shows up and boils inside of me again. Then reality hits you, and when I try to overdo it, the body says ‘No, I don’t really think so.’ It brings you back to Earth, but that’s the part you miss the most. The games you won by 20 or 30 you don’t remember, but those last-second shots or the last-second defensive stops, those are the ones you remember and the ones people remind you about. Rossi: Is that last-second shot against the Knicks your career highlight? Or is there something else you think back on? Kukoc: I hit more than a couple [shots like that], but

I’d say championships are more the measurement of your success as a basketball player. So all the championships, with all the stuff I did in Europe at first and then in the United States, are kind of the highlights. The individual stuff is always there, but it doesn’t mean as much if nothing happens team-wise. The shots you hit are great, but championships are what measures somebody’s success. Rossi: Have you been watching much of the World Cup? Kukoc: I’ve watched a lot of it. I watched Croatia, that’s my team. I watched the United States because that’s my team, too. Obviously I’m happy the States advanced and a little disappointed Croatia didn’t. Rossi: Do you ever get together with your former teammates and play some basketball? Kukoc: No, but every once in a while we play golf and we enjoy the competitive nature that way.
