Two apartment fires leave one hurt By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – The Westmont Fire Department extinguished two fires within a week at local apartment complexes. At 12:34 p.m. July 8, the fire department responded to an activated fire alarm at 5920 S. Cass Ave. in the Fountains of Stone Crest apartment complex, according to Administra-

tive Director Craig Skala. Upon arrival, fire companies noticed smoke coming from a second-floor unit. After entering the apartment, crews found a fire in the living room, then quickly extinguished the blaze before it could spread further, according to Skala. A female resident was found lying in the hallway and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove

where she was treated for her injuries. No firefighting personnel were injured, Skala said. Because of xthe time of day, several apartment doors adjacent to the fire had to be forced open to ensure residents’ safety. Additionally, a unit below the fire incurred water damage, according to the Westmont Fire Department. A week later, at 11:32 p.m.

July 15, the Westmont fire Department responded to a report of an apartment fire at 6703 Vail Drive at the Ponds apartment complex, according to Skala. When fire crews arrived, their investigation located a kitchen fire in a second-floor unit. The fire was extinguished and contained to the kitchen area. Although no other rooms or units were damaged, the “kitchen was a

total loss,” Skala said. No crews or residents were injured during the incident, according to the Westmont Fire Department. The July 15 apartment fire has been deemed a cooking accident, but the July 7 fire remains under investigation, according to Skala. For information, contact the Westmont Fire Department at 630-981-6400.

Westmont refrains from action against village manager nessed him driving in the center turn lane before signaling and proceeding into a parking lot of a closed business, according to Clarendon Hills Police Chief Ted Jenkins. He failed a subsequent field sobriety test and was arrested and processed at the Clarendon Hills Police Department, where it was determined that his blood alcohol content was .112, Jenkins said. Searl – who has served as Westmont village manager for

10 years – was released on an individual recognizance bond and is due in court on Aug. 5, according to Jenkins. The following day, Searl notified Mayor Ron Gunter of the arrest, and the village since has decided the situation will be handled “confidentially and in a closed session,” according to Village of Westmont Communications Director Larry McIntyre. Searl has not been placed on leave and McIntyre would

not comment on potential disciplinary recourse. Searl is not the first Village of Westmont employee to face drunk driving charges. In December 2011, former Westmont Fire Chief Frank Trout was accused of a drinking and driving incident in which he crashed into a parked car in unincorporated DuPage County. The village placed Trout on unpaid administrative leave the day after he was arrested.

Trout pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol and the Village of Westmont then issued a statement exclaiming that Trout would be retiring after a combined 44 years as a Westmont police officer and fire chief. Trout then sued the village for unpaid wages and damages. The lawsuit still is pending and soon will be subject for a motion for summary judgment, according to village attorney John Zemenak.

DENTAL CHECKUP AS LIFE SAVER Q: Why is a dental checkup important for overall health considerations? A: When your dentist checks the inside of your mouth, he or she may observe conditions that are early signs of other health issues. For instance, inflamed gums, an abundance of cavities or oral infections can be signs of heart disease. In such cases, the dentist might refer the patient to a cardiologist or some other health care specialist. Erosion of the enamel on the tooth, as another example, could be a sign that a patient has an acid reflux problem or an eating disorder like bulimia, in which a person repeatedly induces vomiting to get rid of food. Also, a patient who complains to the dentist of a burning sensation or constant foul taste in the mouth may be suffering from acid reflux. Type 2 diabetes can manifest itself in the mouth with bright red, bleeding gums and foul breath. Gum trouble and wounds in the mouth that won’t heal can also be an indication of leukemia. An ammonia smell in the mouth can be a sign of kidney disease. Tooth loss can indicate osteoporosis, a thinning of bones, or some other bone condition. And, of course, your dentist would be the person most likely to detect a cancer in your mouth. So it’s not just your smile your dentist is concerned with. Talk with your dentist about your overall health.

Clarendon Hills Downtown Master Plan is moving forward By ZACHARY WHITE zwhite@shawmedia.com CLARENDON HILLS – The Clarendon Hills Planning and Zoning Board heard little dissent to the Downtown Master Plan during the first public hearing. On June 26, only a few residents voiced concerns during the first of two public hearings, but there is a topic that has created a bit of a stir between residents. “The biggest issue that’s coming out of it is the potential heights of the buildings,” said Greg Jordan, master plan land use committee chairman. The first hearing was aimed at the design goals of downtown, however, that didn’t keep residents who attended the June meeting from voicing their concerns that taller buildings in the downtown

A design idea that has stayed with the plan so far is to include a Park Avenue

bike route, which would run through the downtown from Hinsdale to Westmont. Jordan said the bike path may not make it in the final plan. “I don’t know whether it’s going to go forward or not,” he said. But Ungerleider disagreed, adding that the bike path is still part of the plan, and if the plan is approved staff should start working with the community on the bike route. Another part of past discussions has been the possibility of combining the Metra station, Village Hall, library and post office into a multiple-use facility that houses all three buildings. This would be done in order to free up those properties for other uses. However, Jordan said the desire and the ability to do so are not soon to be aligned. “That’s far off,” he said. The next step following the public hearing recommendations will be whether to approve, change or deny the new master plan draft. If passed, the plan would then go back to the Board of Trustees for final approval.

Local family finds beauty in the broken By ED McMENAMIN

emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – In November, Paul Pustelnik said he felt, for lack of a better word, broken – stressed, overworked and over-extended. Help came from an unexpected place. “I actually saw a Facebook meme that had a picture of a broken bowl that was repaired with gold,” said Pustelnik, 49. “And it said Kinsukuroi – Japanese art of mending broken pottery with gold. And the line that caught me was that it was considered ‘more beautiful for being broken.’ ” The comments below the photo showed the art form had resonated with scores of Facebook users, some of whom were posting comments about the difficulty finding Kinsukuroi pottery, also called Kintsugi, for sale online. Soon, he found himself with his children at Goodwill, look-

a website with the hope of selling a bowl, or maybe two. Quickly, he said, the orders started coming in. By February, they added an Etsy store, and now he said the family is selling about 10 bowls a week, worldwide, to the ring of $30 or $40 each, depending on the difficulty of the mending. Breaking and fixing the bowls has become equal parts artistic outlet, group therapy and business lesson for the family, he said. “We love the whole thought of ‘Here’s all these things nobody thought much about,’ ” he said. “We break them, we fix them with gold, and now they’re treasured by people.” Instead of using a real gold lacquer, Pustelnik and his four

children, ranging from 10 to 17 years old, glue the bowls back together and then paint over the cracks with a gold paint. He said that helps maintain costs and keeps the prices affordable for customers. “They see the value beyond the money,” he said. “We talked about what this piece means to people. To have a piece sitting on a table for someone who is trying to correct their life is an amazing thought to me.” Nine months after feeling at wit’s end, Pustelnik said Kintsugi was the key to his seeing the importance of struggle, of breaking and of overcoming. “You don’t just break once in your life,” he said. “You’re constantly breaking in some way. There’s absolutely nobody that hasn’t felt broken at least one point in their life. Breaks are almost necessary, and almost a gift in some way. It flipped my life around.”

Food rescue program thriving at People’s Resource Center Each month, thousands of hungry DuPage County neighbors visit one of People’s Resource Center’s two food pantries in Wheaton and Westmont to choose a week’s worth of nutritious food, including fresh produce, meats, dairy, canned goods and household staples. In partnership with more than 60 local retailers, businesses like Hillshire Brands and Kraft, as well the Northern Illinois Food Bank, PRC is now conducting more than 100 food rescue pick-ups each week! When you visit the PRC food pantries, you’ll see bins brimming with fresh produce and bakery items, coolers full of meat, and shelves stacked with food. You’ll also see and hear the gratitude from those neighbors who will have food to keep their families fed. It takes so many caring community members to make this possible – our food rescue retail partners, the great volunteers who help with food rescue pick-ups, and the generous donors who have helped support the purchase of a new truck to keep up with growth in food rescue. Ed St. Claire is the owner of Unique Sausage in Westmont.

Thumbs up to Ed St. Clair taking a big leap and following his dream of owning his own restaurant. While St. Clair is not yet a restaurateur, he is the owner and only employee of Unique Sausage, located at 214 E. Chicago Ave. We love a good link and applaud St. Clair for taking a risk and selling a product that is completely all-natural, handmade and gluten free. Thumbs down to Westmont Village Manager Ron Searl, who was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol July 3. Searl is the second Westmont official in recent years to be faced with drunken driving charges – former fire chief Frank Trout was charged with, but later acquitted of, driving under the influence. Both Prospect and Eccles Fields are located behind Clarendon Hills Middle School, and can be accessed off of Chicago Avenue in Clarendon Hills Ideally players will be able to attend two days of try-outs; if players can only attend one day, the best determination will be made from that effort only. The Cardinals are a professionally trained youth baseball organization committed to the quality development of local players from 9 years old into high school. To provide the highest level of training and objectivity, all teams use professional trainers to provide training and skill development and ensure that players are appropriately positioned in games according to their demonstrated skills. Try-Outs will be conducted under the supervision of former major league player, and current Cardinal trainer, JJ Furmaniak. The teams play a competitive basebal schedule with local travel teams and tournament play consistent with our development focus. Cardinals are also a feeder team for Rhino Elite Baseball, an Elite level travel program that progresses players into the high school level and is dedicated to assisting players in achieving their goal of playing college baseball by playing at a regional and national level of “showcased” competition. If players show the appropriate level of capability within the Cardinals, or at try-outs, they will be evaluated and selectively provided invitations to join the Rhinos, if they are capable and that level of competition is desired. Please have players at try-outs for sign up, 15 minutes before their designated start time. If you have any questions, please contact Rick Herbst at RHerbst26@gmail.com. • Age qualification will be based on the individual’s age as of 4/30/2015.

Last week, my kids were doing a lemonade stand in the driveway. Unbeknownst to us, an off-duty Downers Grove police officer stopped by to get some. When he left, he put it over the police scanner. Within a half hour, six squad cars had stopped by to get some and praise my boys (ages 5 and 7). This was such a cool move on their behalf. The boys were excited by the patronage to say the least. They thought they were the talk of the town. This move by members of the Downers Grove Police Department made an impression that will last a lifetime on them!

By Stephanie Kohl Parish Administrator Mike Ryan provides oversight of all campus facilities. His goal is to provide the best facilities for the students and all of Saint Mary of Gostyn’s parishioners. Question: Many projects were completed in the 2013-14 school year. What do you think was the more important and why? Answer: The most important project for the school was the removal of old worn carpet and installation of tile in all school classrooms and the installation of new carpeting in the school offices, hallways, kindergarten and preschool. Question: How did you choose the projects for the upcoming year? Answer: The Buildings and Grounds Committee conducts an annual review of the campus and a priority list is created. This year, the most pressing need was the installation of energy efficient windows replacing the original windows in the 60-year-old school building. Question: Why is it so im-

portant to continue expanding and improving the campus? Answer: It is imperative that we maintain our facilities to the best of our ability. Our legacy of serving our Parish and community for over 120 years requires us to provide facilities that allow our ministries to function to the best of their abilities. Question: Expansion and improvements are expensive. How are they being funded? Answer: They are funded through good planning with our Parish Finance & Administration Commission, our stewardship from Parishioners and taking advantage of low interest rates on loans. Question: Can you speak about the property purchase adjacent to the school? Answer: We anticipate the purchase to be completed in the fall. The purchase is part of our overall Facility Strategic Plan. Question: Anything else you would like to add? Answer: We will soon embark on creating conceptual drawings to address our Facility Strategic Plan recommendations. 2013 chili champ ready to defend title Sept. 27 By ED McMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The whole kitchen sink, a cheesehead and a traditionalist: The three top finishers in last year’s Chilympics touting three distinct cooking styles. That’s the joy in the homestyle category in chili cook-offs, anything goes. Last year’s winner, Debra Hunt, of the more-is-merrier strategy, used baked beans, chili beans, hamburger, turkey, rice, noodles, sausage, vegetables and spices. “I drag the whole kitchen,” the Markham resident said, describing the end result as a “Bobby Flay taste.” “It’s sweet and spicy,” she said. “That southwest taste, that’s what I try to achieve.” The 2013 runner-up, Mike Goodman of Wisconsin, competes nationally and goes by the moniker Cheesehead Chili. He made “Chunky Chicken and Chopped Chorizo served with Cheddar Cheese and Chives,” which also earned the People’s Choice award. The Packers fan joked that he usually cooks with Bear meat. “When I was a child, my dad took me up to Wisconsin,” he said, in jest. “We’d shoot black bear, grind it up and make chili out of it. We don’t have to do that anymore. We invite bears up to Lambeau Field, they get to the 30-yard line and they roll over.” Hunt and Goodman were followed by first-time chili cook-off contestant John Pastore of Bolingbrook. “I tried to stick to the basics,” he said. “I went a little bit on the sweeter side. I think a lot of people go for hot, and a lot of time they all taste the same. I tried to go sweet and

Know more The Chilympics takes place from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 27 at Fishel Park in downtown Downers Grove. The contest is open to all ages and costs $45 to enter, which includes a $20 membership fee to ICS, a $25 Park District registration fee and a commemorative t-shirt. Competitors also must cook enough chili for the judges and the People’s Choice tasting. Full information and competitor application forms are available at www.dgparks. org. The deadline to enter is Sept. 12. threw some celery in there to make it crunchy. It sounds like a weird combination for chili but it worked enough to get me there so it was fun.” The Downers Grove Park District now is accepting applications for the second annual Chilympics Sept. 27 at Fishel Park. Like last year, the winner receives a $500 cash prize and an entry to the International Chili Society National Finals. Prizes also will be awarded to the runners-up and the people’s choice award winner.

Hunt said she’s already signed up to defend her title from the inaugural Chilympics last year. Pastore and Goodman said they’re not sure yet if they’ll be back. In addition to homestyle, Goodman also competes in the red chili and chili verde categories at national contests. Red and green come with strict ingredient boundaries, like no beans. He travels to between 25 and 30 contests a year, he said. “It’s a great hobby,” he said. “We’re getting some young people involved now, and it’s just they enjoy it so much. Resident finds way working at autism center By ED McMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com

Erica Benson – ebenson@shawmedia.com

Downers Grove resident Rehan Tariq shows Aiken Thompson of Downers Grove bottoning and zipper techniques Monday at Charlie’s Gift Autism Center.

DOWNERS GROVE – Rehan Tariq began volunteering at Charlie’s Gift Autism Center in May to prepare for a possible career in occupational therapy, but he said it quickly became more than just a place to prepare for his future. The center provides physical and occupational therapy, but also behavioral therapy and several other services to children with autism spectrum disorder and their families. Tariq assists Occupational Therapist Stacy Haatvedt two days a week, doing any-

Often times, children who come to Charlie’s Gift Autism Center can be reluctant to open up to new people, and Tariq said the atmosphere at the workplace gives the chance for those personal connections to develop more quickly with the children. “I feel like Charlie’s Gift gives that opportunity where you’re like family,” he said. “You can be yourself and we’ll work with you and understand just what to do.” He said like children without developmental disabilities, children on the autism spectrum often just need

Know more Charlie’s Gift Autism Center is located at 1048 W. Ogden Ave., Suite 100. To inquire about volunteer activities, call 630-810-1200. Charlies Gift is a program of The Community House, www. thecommunityhouse.org.

someone to give them a nudge in the right direction. “You just need to push them a little bit so they know their ability is there, they just have to fulfill it,” he said. “It’s really rewarding.” Tariq, 22, of Downers Grove graduated from UIC with a psychology degree this spring and hopes to return there for graduate school, he said. If he stays in the area for grad school, he plans to keep coming to Charlie’s Gift as often as he can. Charlie’s Gift Director of Clinical Services Kathy Ruffulo said the not-for-profit is looking for more dedicated volunteers like Tariq this summer as it continues an expanded roster of Saturday morning activities geared toward children with autism and their siblings, called Sib Shop, at the Community House in Hinsdale. She said volunteers also are needed for a horseback riding activity for families with the Ray Graham Association. “We couldn’t do what we do without them,” she said. “When families come to Charlie’s gift for therapy, we bill their insurance for that, but that doesn’t begin to cover the costs of the center.” Ruffulo explained that Charlie’s Gift sets itself apart from other autism centers by not only offering speech clinics, occupational therapy and and social and motor skills development, but also behavioral therapy, and services for the family as a whole. “We focus on the behavioral piece, and mood disorders and anxiety that go along with having autism,” she said. “As well as building social opportunities, and building those social skills.”

Village of Downers Grove 1.630.434.5500 • www.downers.us Mayor Martin T. Tully Commissioners: Sean Patrick Durkin, Geoff Neustadt, Robert T. Barnett, Becky Rheintgen, David S. Olsen, Greg Hosé Village Manager David Fieldman The “Village Corner” is edited and published by the Village of Downers Grove. Any questions concerning the content of this page should be directed to the phone number referenced in the article. If a number is not listed in the article, please call the Community Response Center at 1.630.434.CALL (2255). Meeting dates, times, locations and agendas are subject to change. Check the Village website at www.downers.us and DGTV Channel 6 for the most current meeting information.

LONG RANGE PLANNING SESSION Please note the next long range planning session of the Village Council, originally scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2014, has been rescheduled and will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2014, following the Council meeting. For more information please visit our website at www.downers.us.

VILLAGE WILL NOT RENEW ELECTRICAL AGGREGATION The Village's electrical aggregation contract with FirstEnergy Solutions will end in August 2014. The two-year contract initiated in 2012 locked in low electricity supply rates for residents and small businesses. Through the aggregation program, participants saved 42% over the ComEd rates. The Village has reviewed options for renewing the contract with FirstEnergy and has also looked into other independent energy suppliers. In today's market, the rates available from other energy suppliers are nearly identical to ComEd's rates. There will be no benefit to residents or businesses by continuing the aggregation program. Should the energy supply market change, the Village can reevaluate after 12 months. Next Steps All participants enrolled in the aggregation program will return to ComEd's supply rates at the conclusion of the contract ending in August. ComEd's rate for October 2014-May 2015 will be 7.42 cents per kilowatt hour, plus an additional adjustment capped at .5 cents per kilowatt that will vary each month. This rate is determined by the Illinois Power Agency, a State of Illinois agency that purchases power supply for ComEd. Customers will have two billing cycles to decide whether to sign up on their own with an independent/third party authorized energy supplier or be locked into ComEd's rates for 12 months. Customers choosing not to switch will be automatically returned to ComEd and no further action is required. If You Switch The Illinois Commerce Commission provides information about company complaints and other information about power suppliers at pluginillinois.org. Residents are encouraged to contact the ICC directly if they have complaints about misleading marketing tactics. Utility complaints may be submitted by calling 800524-0795 or online a www.icc.illinois.gov.

WATER RESTRICTIONS From May 15 to September 15 residents are permitted to use outdoor water based on an even/odd system. The last digit of an address determines the day. If an address ends in an even number, the resident can water on even calendar days; if the address ends in an odd number, the resident can water on odd calendar days. Outdoor water usage is permitted between 4 a.m. and 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and 11 p.m. on your watering day. Outdoor water usage is not permitted between 11 a.m.and 4 p.m. on any day, for any address.

CYCLING RETURNS TO DOWNERS GROVE ON JULY 27 For the first time in five years, the thrill of competitive cycling will captivate crowds downtown as the Village of Downers Grove hosts the culminating event of the Intelligentsia Cup Prairie State Cycling Series on Sunday, July 27, 2014. The challenging figure-eight course is highly regarded among U.S. professional cyclists and is the same one used for the U.S. Professional Criterium Championships that had been held in Downers Grove for 23 years. Street closures for the course will begin about 5:00 a.m. on race day, with events starting at 8:20 a.m. For more information and race times, visit www.prairiestatecyclingseries.com.

Village Council meetings are held the first, second, and third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Hall Council Chambers at 801 Burlington Avenue. Village Council meetings are broadcast live on DGTV-Ch. 6. The rebroadcast of these meetings can be seen Wednesday mornings at 9:00 a.m. and Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. Live radio broadcasts of Council meetings can only be heard at 7:00 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of the month on WDGC-FM, 88.3. Podcast and live streaming coverage of Council meetings are also available at www.downers.us. Individuals with a disability requiring a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in any meeting should contact the ADA Coordinator at 630.434.5525, prior to the meeting. Restaurant reviews

Chama Gaucha carves out delicious niche DOWNERS GROVE – Never having eaten at a Brazilian steakhouse, I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect when I walked into Chama Gaucha, but the entire evening was impressive from beginning to end. The hostess seated us at a menu-less table in the spacious dining room, and explained we were welcome to enjoy whatever we wanted from the circular salad bar. Set in the center of the room, its array of offerings was a visual work of art. The design of the Downers Grove restaurant is richly accented with stone and wood, and the room boasts an eye-catching wine cellar. We each received a small square card – red on one side and green on the other. This worked like a traffic signal, directing the many servers who carry carving knives and skewers of cuts of meats they skillfully slice to order. The men were dressed in elegant incarnations of the South American gaucho – their version of our cowboy. The restaurant’s tables are well spaced so the gauchos can roam freely. After piling our plates with salad and veggies, my companion and I returned to our table, where a server pulled out my chair as I sat down. Our tabletop quickly was filled with traditional Brazilian sides, including a warm basket of cheese bread, a plate of garlic mashed potatoes, warm fried bananas and fried polenta. After making some room on our plates, we flipped our cards to the green side, and the gaucho-attired servers began to stop at our table. One after another, they offered us a slice or two of their carnivorous temptations. Lamb, pork, chicken and beef. We ate until we couldn’t fit another bite. When we found a favorite, the gauchos offered us extra helpings, and when we spotted a stack of savory sausages across the

Back in the Pampas, gauchos can be found tending large herds of cattle in parts of Brazil and several neighboring countries. At the end of their long day, the gauchos gather around the churrasco or fire pit to eat and share stories. That dining experience inspired the South American steakhouse concept. The local

than difficult to choose a favorite, but the bacon-wrapped chicken as well as the garlic steak definitely found their way to the top of my list. Chama Gaucha also has an extensive wine menu divided by region, and the restaurant staff was eager to share recommendations. I would suggest guests save a little room for dessert, because by the time I’d finished clearing the last helping from my plate, I simply couldn’t indulge further. Because of its all-you-caneat service, Chama Gaucha may be a bit pricier than your average meal out, but it’s an out-of-the-ordinary dining experience, whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply treating yourself.

Downers Grove North’s Jack Warwick gets the force out at second base in a summer playoff game against Hinsdale South on July 16. After a solid summer season, Warwick could be in the mix for playing time as a middle infielder next spring.

The boys of summer By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com When the high school baseball season ends in the spring, most teams switch right to the summer season. A looser atmosphere during the summer where the stakes aren’t quite as high lets coaches toy with their lineups to see which players could fill which roles come next spring. Here’s what the summer season brought for Downers Grove North, Downers Grove South and Westmont.

Downers Grove South first baseman Zach Radde stretches to make the catch on a foul ball in a summer playoff game against Hinsdale South on Thursday. Radde is one of several players South head coach Darren Orel said could see more playing time in the spring.

No matter what time of year or what personnel he has on hand, North head coach Chad Isaacson wants his players to improve each day and likes for his teams to be solid defensively. He saw both this summer. “We’ve got a pretty good mix-

I feel he’s getting better at it,” Orel said. “I think he could a big plus for us there.”

The 12-and-under Downers Grove Fury travel baseball team had a memorable road trip earlier this summer as it traveled to Cooperstown, N.Y., and competed in the Cooperstown Dreams

Park National Tournament. The Fury finished the weeklong tournament, which featured 104 teams from across the United States and Canada, with a 3-5 record. Players on the 12U team that competed at the tourna-

ment were: Jack Babich, Owen Dellamaria, Cameron Demos, Robert Gasmen, Eric Goergen, Sam Hoskins, Brian Kirkolis, Brennan Madiar, Devun Pontrelli, James Ruzicka and Luke Schulz. The team was coached by Bill Goergen and assistant

coaches Victor Mensavage and James Pontrelli. Tryouts for the 2015 Fury season start Sunday for 10U, 11U, 12U and 13U teams and run through early August. Tryouts will be held at Gilbert Park (11U, 12U and 13U) and Washington

About Hitmen Volleyball Club

sschmid@shawmedia.com

GLEN ELLYN – With injuries a factor during qualifying, the Hitmen Volleyball Club 15 Black team went into the recent Boys Junior National Championship tournament in Houston seeded No. 32 out of 35 teams. But once there, the 12-player squad made quite a name for themselves, finishing as the top team in Illinois and 10th overall. Playing a total of 13 matches, the Hitmen defeated teams from Wisconsin, California, New York, Pennsylvania and Hawaii. “The boys worked hard and they got players back healthy,” Hitmen Volleyball Club owner and director Mike Liedtke said. “They moved up every single day even though they had the toughest road out of anybody. They played top teams every single day.” Team members Sean Farmer, Ethan Marchetti, Grant Tecson, Kevin Tarczon, Anthony Schlesser, Cam Lilly, Robbie Murphy and Johnny Winkler all will be sophomores at Glenbard West High School in the fall. Adam Branch (Downers Grove South), Tommy LaMantia (St. Francis), Nick Schellinger (Lake Park) and Brian Knoll (incoming freshman at Wheaton Warrenville

South) round out the roster. The team is coached by Christina Schock and is based out of Ackerman Park in Glen Ellyn. The 15-black squad is one of 12 boys teams the HVC has. Liedtke, a Downers Grove native who played four years of volleyball at Downers Grove North, started the club three years ago and has watched it grow from four teams and

less than 50 players to close to 130 athletes this year (counting both the junior high and high school teams). “I was working for a different club,” Liedtke said. “I had always wanted to start my own club and I said, now is the time to do it. It’s done great so far.” Along with Glen Ellyn, Wheaton and Downers Grove, the Hitmen also have

players from Addison, Carol Stream, Elmhurst, Glendale Heights, Lisle, Lombard, Oak Brook, Villa Park and Westmont playing within the program. In fact, from the top four teams at the IHSA state finals this spring – Lincoln-Way East, Warren, Glenbard West and Lake Park – 17 of the players have been a part of the Hitmen program, according to Liedtke. “One of the biggest things we try to do is build up the rapport and comfort level between the players and coaches,” Liedtke said. “If you know the players on a personal level and show that you care for them, they will want to work hard for you. We want them to try to reach their full potential.” The Hitmen also are starting up a girls program in the fall. They currently hold a lot of practices at the Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center in Glen Ellyn but are looking at possible expansion in the area.

Park (10U) in Downers Grove. The Fury also will field 15U and 16U teams via private tryouts. Visit http://www.downersgrovefury.com/ or email Bob Romay at rromay@comcast.net for more information about tryouts and Fury Baseball.

Continued from page 34 the summer season on June 9, and when they took the field in the summer they looked a lot different. The bad news was that players like Adam Berg, Tommy Franczak, John Kelly, Zach Moran and Greg Pietrzak, who all played key roles on the run to state, graduated and moved on. Standout shortstop Charlie Donovan was limited to one game by a hand injury, and Joe Donovan concentrated more on travel ball and showcases. The positive side is it gave Westmont head coach D.J. Cocks a chance to look at other players in the program. “We had a competitive schedule and I told them before the summer that we might not win many games and that I just wanted them to get better,” Cocks said. “I wanted them to show me what they can do. I want to see if they are versatile. I want them to play more than one position, so I want them to find a second or third position.” Cocks got the chance to play returning varsity players who are expected to log even more innings next spring (Anthony Alessi, Austin Loehman, Kevin Melvin, Andrew Rosol) alongside younger players coming up through the program (Adam Doll, Jackson Fischer). “A couple guys showed me something,” Cocks said. “I think we added some pieces that are going to help us a lot. Anytime you do that, it’s a success.”
