While there is a nominal fee to use the facility, Lance explained that it’s something is mutually agreed upon and negotiated with each group. He said the money is used for general up-keep and maintenance. “We are not here to make money, we are here to give back to the people of Westmont,” Lance said.

WESTMONT – When Westmont Alliance Bible Church closed its doors a little more than a year ago, building owners devised a plan to create a “Christian space for the common good.” The property, 117 N. Cass Ave., was allocated from owners Christian Missionary Alliance to Peace of Christ Community Church, which was given reign to make use of the building. CPA and Peace of Christ Community Church member Josh Lance explained the new overseers saw enormous potential in the space, which is equipped with meeting rooms, computers, a game room, a kitchen and a dining room, in addition to a multi-purpose auditorium that seats more than 300 people. “We knew that our church would not be able to make proper use of the space, and it didn’t make sense for the building to be vacant the entire week,” Lance said. “Instead, we thought, why not make it a common place for people and organizations to use – something that will benefit the whole community.” After few cosmetic improvements to the building, The Commons was founded about one year ago, intended to provide a “Christian space for the common good.” “There are still some details that are reminiscent of a church, but for the most part it’s just like any other community center,” said Lance, who currently oversees all day-to-day operations, including finances, scheduling and managing the website. WESTMONT – Steve Golembiewski’s passion for the outdoors sprouted when he was a young child growing up in central Wisconsin. A native of Neillsville, Wis., a small town of less than 3,000 people that is fondly known as the home of the world’s largest talking cow – a mammoth stat-
ue that was part of the state’s contribution to the 1964 World’s Fair – Golembiewski said some of his fondest memories were spent playing sports and exploring the natural world. “We didn’t have video games or anything like that,”

the Westmont resident said. “So at every opportunity, we played sports or we were outdoors hiking in the woods by my family’s home.” The innate bond with the woods and his love for sports are sentiments he’s carried with him ever since – from an adventure travel class he took while attending college to becoming a pitcher for the Winona State University baseball team. It’s impacted his career, too, as he was hired as Westmont Park District recreation coordinator about seven years ago. The 30-year-old Golembiewski has excelled during his career with the Park District, branching out to the business and theater communities, serving on local committees, founding and overseeing youth programs and racking up award and recognition’s along the way. As a result, Golembiewski was promoted to Park District assistant superintendent of recreation in 2012, a position that still allows him to wear a variety of hats and participate in a wide range of initiatives. “Every day is different, which is good thing because I’m not a big fan of sitting still,” Golembiewski said. “Having so many roles keeps me moving and keeps me busy. “During my time here, I have helped out with so many things, and I like the responsibility of contributing and watching the success of all these initiatives grow.” Golembiewski said some of his favorite responsibilities are overseeing the Park District’s kids and teen programs, helping found and produce the Frozen Film Festival and starting the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick event. “It’s important to stay above the trend in terms of popularity,” Golembiewski said. “You can’t keep doing the same things because people, especially children and teens, will get bored. You have to keep pushing the envelop or they will not come back.” Additionally, Golembiewski is chair of the Park District’s holly days event, manages the annual haunted forest, oversees community service projects, is a Westmont chamber committee co-chair and is active in the Downtown Westmont Business Alliance. In 2013, he was honored with the Illinois Park and Recreation Association Young Professional of the Year award. He also serves on the youth com-

Billionaire Ty Warner is back in court, could face jail time SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA CHICAGO – Prosecutors told a three-judge appellate panel Sept. 17 that Beanie Babies founder Ty Warner’s probation sentence threatens to erode the judicial system’s ability to deter other tax evaders, according to media reports. The billionaire pleaded guilty in 2013 to tax evasion and failing to report more than $24 million in income and hiding money in Swiss bank accounts. He was sentenced to community service and two years of probation. Warner agreed to
pay $27 million in back taxes and interest, a civil penalty of more than $53 million, but did not serve any prison time. Prosecutors had been pushing for a sentence of at least one year in prison, partly to deter others from committing the same crime, and sentencing guidelines had called for a prison sentence of up to 57 months, according to reports. As a result, prosecutors have argued the message sent by the lower court judge to the public is that there are different standards of justice for the rich and the poor, according to reports.

Indian Chinese cuisine goes back over 100 years when people of Chinese origin moved to India across the North East Border and settled in Calcutta. Most of these immigrants were of Hakka ancestry. Over the years they adapted the Chinese cuisine for the locale Indian seasoning and cooking techniques. This is how Indian Chinese fusion began.

Treating Cancer: Integrative Oncology with Illinois Cancer Specialists SPONSORED BY
By Diane Krieger Spivak Cancer can be thought of as a weed in the body. It flourishes with the right environment. Modern physicians have tools such as chemotherapy to kill the weed The real trick to beating cancer and staying cancer free is to create a healthy body environment. Integrative Oncology uses medical treatments along with alternative treatments that have scientific evidence of effectiveness. It focuses not only on the weed, but also on the soil the weed grows in – the whole body, mind, and spirit. It empowers the patient to take an active role. We know that diet can make a difference. Obesity is known to increase the risk of certain cancers. A healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and fish with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids can all have beneficial anti-inflammatory effects. Mind-body approaches, including physical therapy or exercise, yoga, meditation and massage can decrease stress. Distress may not directly lead to the development of cancer,
but it can depress the immune system and affect how one’s body can tolerate certain treatments. Various approaches can help alleviate treatment-related side effects. Ginger eases nausea, and an increased protein intake can combat fatigue and muscle loss. Acupuncture can help with cancer related pain, nausea, and hot flashes. Mind-body interventions combat mood disturbances and insomnia. These approaches, along with your oncologist’s prescribed medications can improve quality of life. Always ask a medical professional before starting any supplements or lifestyle modifications to avoid interaction with other cancer treatments. Integrative medicine reminds us that our bodies have an innate ability to fight disease. Integrative oncology is not just about complementary and alternative treatments or a healthy lifestyle. It is about effectively communicating with and treating the whole person; not just the cancer. For more information on Integrative Oncology, contact Dr. Lakhani at Illinois Cancer Specialists.

Wall climbing and other games gave youth a chance to challenge their thinking, assess and understand a situation, share opinions about what direction to take and learning to forge ahead in spite of mistakes. These attributes are necessary to the development of this core group, which will be utilized as a youth action team in the various communities. Additionally, the number of passed AP exams from Westmont High School students increased from 29 in 2013 to 141 in 2014, and the amount of AP scholars rose from three to 16 in one year’s time. As a result, Westmont High School is one of the most academically improved schools in the country. This accomplishment was truly a team effort, and we want to offer our congratulations to all the students, parents, teachers and district administrators who made this possible. Thumbs up to everyone who participated in the third annual Pet Promenade on Sept. 13 at Ty Warner Park. Hosted by the Westmont Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau, the event is organized to celebrate, educate and encourage compassion and awareness between area families and their pets. Four paws up to all the organizers, volunteers, sponsors and patrons who made this such a memorable event. Alex Soulier, news editor asoulier@shawmedia.com 630-427-6247

t National University of Health Sciences, if you’ve finished your general education requirements, you can earn a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science in as little as 16 months. Not only that, NUHS gives you the freedom to tailor your own degree program by letting you create a course list that matches your unique goals. Whether you plan to use your science education for a career in business, health care, or as a prelude to graduate school, you can construct a specific program to give you the best preparation. According to Dr. Randy Swenson, dean of NUHS’ College of Allied Health Sciences, “You can choose from any combination of courses in our BS program to complete your bachelor’s degree. There are no required core courses, just a requirement that you earn 64 credits. So no matter which of our many courses you pick to meet those credits, you’re on track.” That means that if you are interested in medical administration or hospital work, you can choose courses in Medical Spanish, Medical Terminology and Computer Software. Planning a career in sports and fitness, how about adding courses in Sports and Performance Nutrition, Kinesiology, or Exercise Physiology? If you are looking for a place in research or laboratory work, you might choose courses in Research Methods and Statistics, or Epidemiology. If you want to learn more about how the brain works, NUHS offers Biopsychology and Neuroscience. “Most of our students are interested in nutrition,” Dr. Swenson says. “That’s why NUHS has six separate courses in nutrition and food science available in the BS program.” NUHS is a primary destination for those seeking a professional career in natural health care. Originally founded in 1906 as a single purpose chiropractic college, National’s academic programs now encompass chiropractic medicine, naturopathic medicine, acupuncture, oriental medicine, massage therapy, and more.
The best part of earning your bachelor’s degree at National University is that you’ll be taught by many of the same faculty who teach in the professional degree programs, and you’ll use the graduate-level facilities of one of the world’s top universities specializing in natural medicine. NUHS boasts an outstanding library of 13,000+ volumes devoted to health science, a cadaver-based gross anatomy laboratory, as well as an on-campus student clinic where you can

Facing a future filled with expensive capital replacements, Regional Transportation Authority Chairman Kirk Dillard said Sept. 16 that Metra will get money this year to upgrade some of its equipment. The former state senator attended the DuPage County Board’s Ad Hoc Committee on Mass Transit meeting to discuss the authority’s 2015 budget. Dillard said its nearly $1.5 billion in proposed expenses represents a 9.2 percent increase in operations funding compared to 2014 because of sales tax growth, the state Public Transportation Fund and the Real Estate Transfer Tax. “Metra is going to get these funds for the first time,” he said. Projected revenue is about $1.6 billion. Generally, discretionary funds the authority receives go to the Chicago Transit Authority and Pace Suburban Bus, with the former getting the majority. This year, however, rail service will get $730,000 in sales tax discretionary dollars. That number is expected to increase to $3.8 million in 2016 and $5 million in 2017. Metra also will receive $6 million in 2015 from the authority fund balance in the proposed budget, compared to $2 million for its capital program last year. Dillard estimated the three transportation agencies would require about $30 billion in upgrades and work to bring their services to good repair, about $10 billion of which would go to Metra. With its aging car systems and limited funds, Dillard said, it is important for local officials to push for state and federal dollars. He offered Dallas as an example of a city that invested in its transportation infrastructure to make it more attractive for businesses and younger generations. Taking public transportation instead of a driving can save the average consumer $6,000 to $9,000 a year, Dillard said. But the services must be dependable for people to use them. “If you want to have a

world-class region, you have to have good mass transit,” he said. “For the new generation, it’s inbred in their way of life, and to compete against Boston and California and Dallas, you need it.” He said the budget was the first in a decade-long revamp of the authority’s agencies based on a new sense of cooperation between their leaders. “It’s vital that all three service boards work together,” he said. “We’re all one service system ... we’re all one economic region.” Although his goal is to unite suburban and city agencies to create a shared-ride experience, he said residents in his former district should “sleep well” knowing he was fighting for fairness. “When I’m delayed on the Metra, I’m fuming just like they are,” he said. Committee head and county board member Tonia Khouri said she was glad Dillard was leading the authority and appreciated the long-term planning. “One of the main functions of my committee was to fight for discretionary funding for DuPage County and the collar counties, so we were happy to see that Metra was to receive 39 percent of discretionary funding this year,” she said. “It’s ongoing, we’ll take what we can get, but [DuPage County Board Chairman Dan] Cronin and I and many, many other people have been fighting for that, so it’s been nice seeing it happen.” The authority Board of Directors is expected to vote on the budget in December.

Vistro serves Paul Virant take on family dining HINSDALE – I first attempted to stroll into Vistro on a Wednesday evening without a reservation. That was foolish, I quickly realized, when the hostess politely told me that it would be at least an hour wait. This is Paul Virant’s eagerly anticipated new family restaurant, after all, and the large space was packed – all the seats around the bar, all the tables in the back, all the waiting room in front. I’m impatient, so I made a reservation for the next evening, and returned to Hinsdale with my friend who has more patience with me than I would. The next night it was similarly busy, because, as a busser commented after our meal, “Everyone comes out for Chef Paul.” The mood was lively, with conversing couples, business professionals and families filling the tasteful but casual space. No sign identifies the building facade, but an interior, exposed brick wall is painted with a large Vistro logo bearing the motto: It’s all good. Not many children are likely to be found eating at Virant’s other two acclaimed restaurants, Vie in Western Springs and Perennial Virant in Chicago, so he has said he wants Vistro to be a place where every member of the family can find something appealing. And he has pulled it off. The menu has quesadillas and pizzas and other accessible options, joined by upscale touches such as the West Loop salumi selection. I noticed the dry-aged burger appeared to be the most popular item coming out of the kitchen, along with fried chicken. The drink menu is kid-friendly, as well, with every cocktail also available as a mocktail; and a selection of special sodas joins a short list of craft beers. A careful drink menu that

Garden 6 backyard projects you can’t skip this fall (BPT) - When it comes to caring for your yard, maintenance is crucial - especially during the fall when it needs to recover from the wear and tear of summer and prepare for winter’s harsh conditions. Knowing what your lawn and garden needs from season to season not only makes it easier for you to stay organized with your list of backyard to-do’s, but it also allows you to identify and treat
any problems before they become bigger issues down the road. Get your lawn and garden back in shape and ready for the coming season by completing these fall backyard projects.
1.
out your yard. If you notice an affected area while inspecting your lawn, treat the problem area immediately and then reseed it. This will nourish grass, plus help it establish strong roots needed for growth in the spring.
Patch and seed - Extreme summer weather conditions Plant bulbs - Give your like heat, excess rainfall and spring garden a head start drought can lead to diseased or by planting bulbs 5 to 8 dead patches of grass throughinches deep, depending on the
2.
When You Don’t Need, Or Can’t Afford A Full Remodel
3.
Remove leaves and small debris - Leaves, small twigs and light dirt can quickly accumulate in your yard during the fall and if not removed, can cause soil compaction and make your yard look messy. For a quick cleanup solution, use a leaf blower to easily move debris from your lawn, driveway or patio. Opt for a blower like Troy-Bilt’s new Jet leaf blower that achieves a perfect balance of speed and volume with its mixed-flow fan design, helping you clear your yard efficiently and effectively. Jet also has an optimal weight balance, so the blower is stable and easy to control. When removing leaves, make sure they are dry and wind is at a bare minimum to ensure an easy removal process. Compost - Fall isn’t too late to start a compost pile as it takes six months to one year to develop into rich soil you can use in your garden. Keep in mind, compost decom-
position slows down during the cooler months, which is why it is important to retain heat needed for decomposition by refraining from turning your compost pile.
5.
Prune - Pruning is considered the best preventive maintenance for your trees and shrubs, particularly in the fall and late dormant season. Look to prune diseased or dying branches, but be sure not to remove unreasonably large branches. This leaves exposed stubs that can potentially cause health problems.
6.
Weed - Though a yearround yard task, it’s extremely important to pull as many weeds as possible in the fall. As cooler temperatures set in, weeds start to store food in their roots for the winter. Prevent weed regrowth by pulling or digging weeds out of the ground with a weeding blade or use a homemade weed control solution, such as a combination of vinegar, water and dish soap. Hearing loss stigma delays treatment SPONSORED BY
By Gina Kraman If you can’t see, you get your eyes checked. If you can’t hear, you get your ears checked. Right? Wrong. Of the 10 percent of Americans who experience hearing loss, only half get treated. And it’s not just because of cost. A social stigma linked to hearing loss stops people from seeking treatment, according to Susan Rogan, Au.D., Doctor of Audiology , who practices in Westmont and La Grange Park. She explains, “People think hearing loss is a natural progression of aging. They feel it’s an ‘old’ person’s affliction, and by admitting there’s a problem, they’re admitting they’re no longer young. “The average person waits about five to seven years before seeking help for his or her hearing loss,” Rogan says. “Even when some insurance companies had in the past paid for hearing aids, people didn’t get them.” However, she adds, “Early intervention for hearing loss produces much better outcomes than waiting.”

“People resist treatment until their family members beg them to get help. The family is tired of repeating themselves, and listening to the volume blasting on the television. The patients don’t know what they don’t hear.”

Until they get treatment, and realize what they’ve been missing. Rogan remembers one 50-year-old patient who finally corrected his hearing loss, and was amazed at the small things he could detect, like creaking stairs. Little things that promote fully engaging in life. The first step is making an appointment with a licensed audiologist to determine hearing loss, defined as a deviation from what’s normal. Hearing loss strikes men and women equally, and depending on the cause, can be treated with a customized plan. “Today’s technology offers solutions that fit about all patients physically and financially,” Rogan says.

Westmont’s Quintin Brown (left) dodges Lisle defenders in Friday’s home game. Brown and the Sentinels had their offense in high gear in a 62-42 win.
Westmont wins big vs. Lisle, recaptures rivalry trophy By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – Quintin Brown knows when to give credit where credit is due. Friday night was one of those occasions as Westmont’s football team soundly defeated Lisle 62-42. “The offensive lineman did their jobs, we got the blocks and we got some good out passes in there and Marquis broke the record. Congratulations to him,” Brown said of teammate Marquis Thomas setting a new receiving record. “If it wasn’t
for the linemen blocking, we wouldn’t have done what we did tonight.” What the Sentinels did was thoroughly dominate the Lions, especially in the first half. Westmont’s second play from scrimmage was a screen pass from Kyle Domin to Thomas that went for a 69-yard touchdown just over four minutes into the game. Brown had a 24yard scoring run and Domin and Thomas hooked up again for a 40-yard pass and score on the final play of the first quarter for a 20-0 lead as the Sentinels validated what their
coach believed all along. “I thought all year we had the capability of being that good offensively, and then our defense was great in the first half stopping the run,” Westmont coach Otto Zeman said. Lisle got on the board by recovering an errant punt snap in the end zone, but Westmont responded with another Domin-to-Brown hookup, this one for 82 yards, and Brown’s fumble recovery and 23-yard scoring jaunt to make it a 34-7 contest. “The defense put us on the board early,” Zeman said.
“We had the couple fumbles, one for a touchdown. Defense played really well in the first half. I was happy and a little surprised because we have some injuries going on, but we adapted well.” Anthony Griffiths forced a fumble after Brown’s recovery. A short Domin run and his 25-yard pass to Thomas made it a 48-14 game early in the third quarter. Thomas and Brown added touchdowns in the third to thwart any notion of a Lisle comeback. With the win, Westmont (2-2 overall, 1-1 Interstate
Eight Small) recaptured the Old Plank Road Trophy, the plaque that is awarded to the winning team of this rivalry game each season. It was the first time since 2011 the Sentinels won at the varsity level. “This is the first time I have ever beat Lisle,” Brown said. “The varsity team my freshman year beat them, but this is my first time being on the field beating Lisle, and it was an amazing experience. We got the plaque [Old Plank Road Trophy] and I looked at it and I was like, ‘It was gone for three years and we brought it back home.’”

While Westmont has twice scored more than 50 points this season, the Wildcats are yielding just 8.5 points per game.

D sparks O in Downers Grove South win By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com BERWYN – Downers Grove South’s offense had struggled in recent games, so Jonah Johnson and the defense made some big plays to provide a boost. Johnson had two interceptions, including one on the first play of the game, and a fumble recovery as the defense forced four turnovers in total as Downers Grove South beat Morton 30-7 Friday to improve to 2-2 on the season. The visiting Mustangs turned those turnovers into the first 12 points of the game. Jacob Baker ran in for a 4-yard score after Johnson’s first interception in the first quarter. Baker passed to Maxwell Soderlund for a 30-yard touchdown following an Eric Denby interception late in the second quarter. “It means everything to us,” Johnson said of the win. “We got to get the offense moving. We had struggles in the first few games with that. Our defense is the core of our team and we all know that. As long as our offense keeps it up we can go far.” A Riley Heavey field goal just before halftime made it 150. Ryan Taylor had a 38-yard
touchdown run in the third quarter and Heavey passed to Baker for an 8-yard touchdown in the fourth. That gave Baker the distinction of having a passing, rushing and receiving touchdown in the game. Baker started at quarterback in place of injured starter Jordan Skach. The senior completed his first nine pass attempts and didn’t have any turnovers. Soderlund caught all 10 of Baker’s completions. “He was my quarterback my sophomore year so we always throw together,” Soderlund said. “He always takes the second team’s reps so I’m throwing with him a lot. It didn’t really throw us off much.” Soderlund had 124 yards receiving and eight receptions for more than 10 yards as Baker’s favorite target. Skach didn’t dress for the game after getting injured in Week 3 against Addison Trail. DGS plays an 0-4 Leyden team next week and is hoping to strong some wins together to make the playoffs. “I think it was a good first step,” Soderlund said. “We need to start getting on a roll and I think this was a good team to play.”

DOWNERS GROVE – A brutal mid-September schedule did no favors for Downers Grove North’s football team. Consecutive losses against undefeated West Suburban Silver foes Glenbard West and Oak Park-River Forest in a 35-3 contest on Friday dropped the Trojans’ record to 1-3 on the season, but they haven’t crushed the team’s hopes going forward. “Our defense gave up a few big plays in both games, and our offense couldn’t finish drives,” North quarterback David Edwards said. “That will change. After the offense exploded for Westmont’s football team in a 62-42 win against Lisle on Friday, Marquis Thomas said he was “Just doing my thing.” The wide receiver’s “thing” turned out to be a performance that included eight receptions for 332 yards and five touchdowns, including a 90-yard screen pass for a score and an 82-yard strike with several stiff arms along the way. The yards compiled and touchdowns set new Westmont records. Thomas, the Sears Hardware & Appliance Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi about his record-setting night, defeating Lisle and where the Sentinels are headed this season.

DGN relay sets new school record Daria Wick, Ellie Benge, Gaby Serniute and Lindsay Mathys penciled their names in the record books for Downers Grove North’s girls swim team. The quartet set a new record in the 400-yard relay with a time of 3:35.63 in a dual meet against Oak Park-River Forest on Thursday. The time was more than two seconds faster than the previous best and set a new OPRF pool record. The 400 relay was one of nine event wins for the Trojans, but they lost the dual against the Huskies 94-92. Serniute, Wick, Mathys and lead swimmer Cassandra Candel won the 200 medley relay (1:51.24). Mathys won on her own in the 200 freestyle (1:56.31) and 100 freestyle (53.88). Serniute finished first in both 200 individual medley (2:10.82) and 100 breaststroke (1:08.03), Wick won the 50 freestyle (25.19), Benge was tops in the 500 freestyle (5:30.89). Additionally, Emily Aument scored a 248.45 in winning the diving portion of the dual.

MORE BEARS COVERAGE AT CHICAGOFOOTBALL.COM
CHICAGO FOOTBALL.COM Hub Arkush extremely competitive, but still is coming up short in what looks like a much tougher AFC North than we anticipated just three weeks ago. That leaves Houston and Buffalo as this year’s top worst-to-first candidates. While both hit roadblocks in Week 3, the Bills have shown they possess a number of ways to beat you on their good days. The Texans appear capable of playing defense with almost anyone, and they will benefit from a lighter schedule than most in what may prove to be the league’s softest division this year. More puzzling to most is what’s wrong with the big boys right now? San Francisco, Green Bay, New Orleans and Indianapolis were all popular preseason Super Bowl picks. All four have played well in short stretches and extremely poorly in others. All sit at 1-2 right now. New England is 2-1, but
Don’t miss seeing ‘Chicago Football Now’ Watch Hub Arkush and the rest of our coverage team break down this weekend’s Bears game on “Chicago Football Now” at 10:30 a.m. Saturday on WCIU The U or at 2:30 p.m. Saturday on The U Too. it’s been awfully tough sledding for them on offense, where they are expected to dominate. The defending champion Seahawks are in good shape at 2-1, but their defense has shown some cracks against San Diego and Denver. The biggest disappointment has to be the 49ers, who’ve been outscored 52-3 in second halves this year and blown first half leads the past two weeks. While we knew they could be vulnerable on defense with a revamped secondary and awaiting the midseason returns of Aldon Smith and Navarro Bowman, it’s the 25 penalties they’ve committed in their past two games –
for more than 100 yards in losses – and their four turnovers versus the Bears that have killed them. New Orleans went from one of the league’s shakiest defenses in 2012 to one of the best in 2013, but it has really taken a step back early this year. The Saints were better in their home opener Sunday versus the A.P.-less Vikings, but let’s see what happens when they travel to Dallas in Week 4. The Packers were awful on defense the first two weeks. While they seemed to find some answers in Detroit, they can’t protect Aaron Rodgers and appear to be heading nowhere fast. Indianapolis bares watching as its two losses are to 2-1 Denver on the road and 3-0 Philadelphia. They were very impressive claiming its first win in Jacksonville. But with Robert Mathis now gone for the season with an Achilles tear, it’s hard to imagine the Colts going deep in the playoffs if they get there. Who’s the biggest surprise on the upside? That has to be the Arizona Cardinals. Arizona lost its three

best players on defense during the offseason – Karlos Dansby to free agency, Daryl Washington to suspension and Darnell Dockett to injury, and then lost the fourth in John Abraham one week into the season. It also claimed victories two and three with quarterback Carson Palmer on the sidelines and in spite of the distraction of Jonathan Dwyer’s domestic abuse charges. The temptation is to assume the Cards will struggle to stay with Seattle and San Francisco, who are each more talented. But at this point, who’s to say they can’t? There is still plenty of time to sort all this out, but at this point of the season, Green Bay and San Francisco appear to be in trouble, and if the Saints fall in Dallas Sunday, they will be in big trouble. The surprise clubs to watch very closely the next few weeks will be the Cardinals, Texans, Bills, Chargers and Steelers. Any of those five that get to the midway point with five or six wins could be a real threat all year long.

One thing we’ve learned about the NFL in recent seasons is if you think you know who the real contenders are, just wait a couple of weeks and it will certainly change. Over the past two decades, no more than eight of 12 playoff teams have repeated. And in most of those seasons, back-toback playoff appearances have been more like a 50-50 proposition. Then, of course, there’s the worst-to-first transitions that have seen at least one and often two or three teams go from last in their divisions to first in just one season since the turn of the century. Still, with 2014 now already 19 percent complete, this is crazy! I don’t know about you, but I have no idea who the chalk is. It seems a safe bet that 2013 cellar dwellers Oakland, Jacksonville and Tampa will continue to struggle, while St. Louis and Minnesota appeared ready to compete until injuries and offthe-field issues felled key contributors Sam Bradford, Chris Long and Adrian Peterson. Cleveland has been
