THINGS TO DO The quintessential small town, experience Woodstock’s charm by immersing yourself in a tapestry of arts and culture, festivals and celebrations, and unique opportunities for shopping, dining, and a vibrant nightlife. The Woodstock Square is brimming with history, while the Opera House continues to welcome world-renowned performances. Consider Woodstock your next destination — to visit, start a business, or make it your new home.

STROLL THE HISTORIC WOODSTOCK SQUARE

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, two historic structures dominate the Woodstock Square — the Woodstock Opera House and the Old Courthouse & Sheriff’s House complex. The Park in the Square is home to year-round festivals, concerts, and events, making it the heart of the community, surrounded by shopping, dining and entertainment. Visit realwoodstock.com to plan your trip.

WOODSTOCK OPERA HOUSE

121 W. Van Buren St. (South side of Square) (815) 338-5300 www.woodstockoperahouse.com Majestically positioned on the Woodstock Square for more than a century, stands the historic Woodstock Opera House. Built in 1889 and lovingly restored by the community in 1976, this grand theater serves as an active performing arts and cultural center, hosting a multitude of live events and activities throughout the year. Located in the heart of McHenry County, the Opera House welcomes a diverse audience from both near and far and has been a fertile training ground for numerous luminaries and artists including Orson Welles, Paul Newman, Tom Bosley, and Geraldine Page. Featuring historic furnishings, stained glass

windows, tin ceilings, original woodwork, and hand drawn stencil ornamentations, the Opera House is one of the oldest continuously operating theaters in the Midwest and one of the most recognized historic theaters in Illinois. Today it is home to four resident companies the Woodstock Fine Arts Association, Theatre 121, the Judith Svalander Dance Theatre and Off Square Music. Equipped with all the amenities of any modern theater while surrounded by historical elegance, the Opera House is available for rent as the backdrop for your next private party, celebration or corporate event. Operated by the City of Woodstock and serving as the cultural heart for the community, the Opera House coordinates the annual city band concerts and movies in the park, each summer in the Park in the Square. The adjacent Stage Left Café serves as a secondary performance venue for the historic theater and hosts a variety of local and regional artists and musicians on a weekly basis and can also be rented for meetings, special events, and private parties. The Opera House’s Community Room features a rotating visual arts exhibition January - November and the annual Christmas Tree Walk during the holidays. Make sure your next visit to Woodstock includes this remarkable venue. Thanks to significant grant funding from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic, the Opera House will again undergo extensive renovations in 2024 to ensure this treasured facility can meet the community’s needs for the next century.

OLD COURTHOUSE CENTER

101 N. Johnson St., Woodstock www.woodstockil.gov friendsoftheoldcourthouse.org Woodstock is the seat of government for McHenry County and Woodstock’s Historic Square is the site of the original Old McHenry County Courthouse, built in 1857, and Sheriff’s House & Jail, added in 1887. These buildings, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, are owned by the City of Woodstock, and represent significant historic properties. The Old Courthouse, a simple Italianate structure built under the design of Chicago’s famed architect John Mills Van Osdel, is similar to the Cook County Courthouse of 1853 that was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire. The Old Courthouse is one of the few pre-Civil War Courthouses left standing in Illinois today. The Sheriff’s House & Jail lodged Pullman Strike labor leader Eugene Debs for a

period of six months in 1894 for refusing to comply with a court injunction related to the Pullman strike. The building served as the McHenry County government offices until the early 1970s when the county moved these services to a new, larger facility in Woodstock. The buildings reopened in August of 2023 after an extensive restoration and renovation project was completed. The complex is now home to seven tenants including several popular local businesses; a restaurant, brew pub, wedding and event venue, commercial incubator kitchen, DIY art studio, Chamber of Commerce and two small business incubator businesses that include a vinyl record shop and candle and aroma therapy shop are now open in the complex. A visitor center run by the Woodstock Area Chamber of Commerce & Industry is also located on the second floor or the Courthouse. The reopening of these historic buildings has been an economic

boost to the downtown and contributes to public enjoyment of residents and visitors. Follow the Friends of the Old Courthouse on Facebook for information on upcoming tours and activities.

A LITTLE HISTORY

Chester Gould, creator of the Dick Tracy comic strip which ran 1931 to 1977, lived in rural Woodstock for 50 years. The Dick Tracy comic strip originally premiered in the Detroit Mirror, then in the New York Daily News, followed by the Chicago Tribune, and then on to nationwide syndication, and eventually to international audiences. The crime fighting adventures of Gould’s Dick Tracy character were so popular that the comic strip appeared on the front page of the New York Daily News for 45 consecutive years, and it was seen in 27 foreign papers. It is one of the top 10 longest running comic strips of all time.

PARKS

Woodstock boasts one of the best park systems in the State of Illinois. As Woodstock residents do not belong to a separate Park District, all park facilities are owned by the City and maintained by the Department of Public Works. Anyone looking for a quiet place to walk or jog would find a visit to Emricson Park, Ryder’s Woods, Westwood Conservation Area or Donato Conservation Area a relaxing and renewing experience. Teeming with plant and animal life, these parks represent pristine natural wonders and remain popular places for a quiet afternoon. Residents and visitors can look forward to the construction of a new all-inclusive intergenerational playground, Nature’s Way, to be built at Emricson Park starting in the summer of 2024. Two tennis courts at Emricson Park will also be converted to pickle ball courts in the summer of 2024, as well as improvements to the tennis and pickle ball court at Bates Park.

Over the past 50 years, over 25,700 acres have been set aside for the pleasure of future generations. Annual events include Hooked on Fishing, hosted for free during a weekend in June where families can try out the sport of fishing and have fun trying to hook the “big one”; cross-country

candlelight skiing, hosted one weekend each January and February; and the Festival of the Sugar Maples, held in early March, which demonstrates how maple syrup is made. The Conservation District publishes “Landscapes,” a free quarterly magazine that details the District’s free educational programs, special events and other District news. VILLAGE OF WONDER LAKE T

he Village of Wonder Lake is a rapidly growing residential and business community centered around Wonder Lake. The lake was created in 1929 by a group of Chicago real estate investors who damned the Nippersink Creek creating the private 830-acre recreational lake. Beginning as a summer resort and recreation area, Wonder Lake gradually evolved into a community of permanent year-round residents with a handful of part-time summer and weekend residents. The village was incorporated in 1974 as the Village of Sunrise Ridge with a subsequent name change to the Village of Wonder Lake. The population of the Wonder Lake area is approximately 15,000 with just over 4100 residing within the corporate limits of the Village of Wonder Lake. The Village of Wonder Lake provides parks, public works, police protection, a building department, and municipal water services to its constituents. A recent $20M

water/sewer plant became operational providing services to some residents on the east side of the lake. Wonder Lake is the center of residential development activity in McHenry County. The Meadows of West Bay subdivision is in the final stages of building about 300 homes with a boat launch facility as part of their commutiy park on the lake. The Stonewater development is building a planned 3,700 homes and includes areas for retail and commercial activity. A new aquatic center opened during the summer of 2023 and expansions to the center are planned. The Wonder Lake community is privileged to be the home of the Wonder Lake Ski Show Team. Nationally recognized, they entertain on the lake nearly every Friday evening during the summer. The community supports many clubs and organizations, the oldest social one being the Yacht Club. Sailboat races occur every Sunday in the summer. The Wonder Lake Sportsman’s Club, which is

the oldest, actively helps manage wildlife in and around the lake. Fish stocking, bird management and wetland protection and restoration are part of their mission. Fourth of July is the premier event of the year in Wonder Lake. A midday parade through the downtown area is followed by a traditional performance by the Wonder Lake Ski Show Team. The celebration culminates in a spectacular fireworks show over the lake. Annual community fundraising efforts make this all possible. It’s an exciting time to part of the Wonder Lake Community. The Woodstock Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry is proud to serve the Wonder Lake community and welcomes all new businesses and residents to the area! Together we can be a cohesive voice in local matters. You can stay informed of new developments in the area, network with an expanded business community and engage with community leaders. We look forward to growing this relationship with the Wonder Lake community!

It originated in the mid-1600s, more than 100 years before our country became an independent nation. Township government in Illinois dates back to 1787, when Congress established the Northwest Territory and designated

counties and townships within the territories. When the second Illinois Constitution was adopted in 1848 it gave counties the option to include townships in their governmental structure. A majority of Illinois counties chose the township system in a general election of 1849, among them being McHenry County, where the voters almost unanimously chose township government in a referendum in November of 1849. A Township, as a political and geographic subdivision, is a municipal corporate body that can sue and be sued, own property, borrow money and levy

Services expressly required of all townships include providing for welfare assistance, building and maintaining rural roads, assessment of property and preventing the spread of communicable disease. In addition to this, townships may establish libraries, medical clinics, museums, community buildings, public rest stations, mental health facilities and youth committees. McHenry County is divided into 17 townships.

City of Woodstock There are generally eight elected officers in each township. These are the supervisor, clerk, assessor, highway commissioner and four trustees. The term of office for each position is four years. Terms are synchronous rather than staggered. The annual meeting of the township electors is held the second Tuesday in April each year. The Supervisor is the Chief Executive Officer of the township and is responsible for the township funds, serving as treasurer of all funds and records all transactions in an official book. The Supervisor must file a statement of the financial status of the township with the township clerk. A summary of this report must be published annually. One of the most important functions of the Supervisor is in the area of General Assistance. The Supervisor of General Assistance gives aid to the needy. Money used for this purpose is raised by local taxes and non-State receiving units, which applies to most of the 1,400 plus townships in Illinois.

The money thus raised is used to provide food, shelter, utilities, medical care and burial whenever necessary. *Dorr Township 1039 Lake Ave. Woodstock, IL 60098 (815) 338-0125 (Office) (815) 338-1060 (Road Dist.) Township Road District 12322 Davis Rd., Woodstock, IL www.dorrtownship.com

EDUCATION Woodstock School District 200 serves students in grades PreK-12 who live in the communities of Woodstock, Bull Valley, Greenwood, the west side of Wonder Lake, and unincorporated McHenry County. The school district was formed in 1969, when two elementary districts and one high school district consolidated, but education in Woodstock started in 1847. Today, our schools offer a strong standards-based educational program that is based on best practices and innovation but that is also rooted in the rich traditions of our 150-year-old community. District 200 currently operates 12 schools: the Verda Dierzen Early Learning Center where all of the community’s youngest children begin their education; six elementary schools serving students in grades 1-5; two middle schools for students

District 200 provides a wide variety of programs to help every child to succeed. Early childhood education, dual language, bilingual and gifted programs, Advanced Placement classes, career and technical training, and special needs programs

and Advanced Placement tests, and our graduates attend some of the top colleges and universities in the nation. Elementary and middle school students consistently score above the state average on standardized achievement tests.

strengthen the general education curriculum. A districtwide focus on reading, writing and mathematics combined with the use of technology as a learning tool help prepare all students for success in and outside of the classroom.

The Verda Dierzen Early Learning Center is a recognized model for early childhood education. Outside of the classroom, District 200 provides an extensive selection of athletic, fine arts, enrichment and extracurricular programs. Students regularly excel at the state level in a variety of competitions, including music, mathematics, graphic arts and athletic events.

A 2006 referendum allowed the school district to complete $105 million in school construction which included new elementary, middle and high school buildings, an addition to the early learning center, and the remodeling and conversion of a former middle school to an elementary school.

District 200 high school students excel at the state and national levels in both academics and extracurricular activities. District 200 high school students perform very well on ACT

Hispanic Connections is a group that was born from a vision of Hispanic businesses connecting to network, support one another, grow individually and collectively, and give back to our community. We connected with incredible leaders in the community that saw our potential, believed in each other and put their leadership to work to benefit not only our businesses but much more, a community in need of a voice. We are creating a place for the Hispanic community to express itself and integrate with the population of McHenry County. Hispanic Connections is not only a networking group where business come to meet, integrate, and support each other, looking to grow via referrals but it has become a force and voice of a community that is eager to integrate, lead and be heard. Hispanic Connections is truly a networking and service group. We have created events like the annual Mexican Independence Day Celebration, Latino Parent Career Night together with District 200, Churros with Santa, Salsa Nights and legal night. We support scholarships and multicultural events in schools engaging with students and staff to teach Latin Music and Latin Dance. We are proud to show a town like Woodstock, how two cultures can come together with respect and leadership. In 2018 and 2019 we sponsored Latina candidates for the annual Miss Woodstock Pageant and they took home the crown for two consecutive years. The future is bright, we invite you to become a member and become part of our success story. Being part of this leadership force requires commitment to something greater than yourself, and we need that dedication from even more of you to give a voice to the Hispanic Community of Woodstock and McHenry County.
