DOWNERS GROVE – From model trains circling a track around packages and a decked-out Christmas tree to a magical train ride on the Polar Express, the holiday season and railroading seem to be inevitably linked. Luckily for residents of Downers Grove, the Boy Scouts of America Venture Crew 57 model railroad club meets twice a month at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Downers Grove for train enthusiasts of all ages. “We are the only youth-oriented model train club around that invites kids to run their own trains,” said Calvin Christy, 68, adviser for the group. Founded in 1993 by Scouts and their fathers, Venture Crew 57 welcomes boys and girls ages 14 to 21. Boys and girls as young as 10 who are accompanied by a parent may join the Baden Powell Modular Railroad Club, which is associated with Venture Crew 57, Christy said. Christy said the group attends campouts and various train-related outings and railroad shows throughout the year. Club members bring their trains to the meetings

around the track, there is always something new that catches the eye. Many of the tracks and scenery on display were courtesy of longtime club member Andrew Bobis, 27. He became hooked on trains after a trip to Heritage Fest in Downers Grove when he was 13 and the club was displaying its trains inside the Metra train station. “I love the trains, but I like the building aspects of the hobby, making a little world come to life,” Bobis said. “There is a lot of planning and building that goes into it.” He bought building kits he puts together and then paints, he added. Keith Lipski, owner of Timberline Train Shop Limited, 5228 Main St. in Downers Grove, has become very familiar with the railroad club. As a member of the National Model Railroad Association, his group also meets at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, which is where he met Christy and the club members. “Model railroading is a very interesting hobby because you get to learn different things,” Lipski said. “Carpentry, electrical, history, photography. There are so many aspects that keep people’s interests.”

D-202 to host community engagement sessions By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LISLE – Seeking community input on a strategic plan, Lisle Community Unit School District 202 will hold a series of workshops called Vision 202 starting Jan. 20, 2015. There will be five monthly sessions from January to May at Lisle Junior High School. Each session will have its own topic such as student achievement and district finances. Participants at each session will be given an overview of the topic and form smaller groups to discuss the topic. Ultimately, the feedback gathered from the sessions will be presented to the board to help them form the strategic plan. COMMUNITY VOICE / BRAYER TEAGUE AND GLENN WILLIAMS

From Downers Grove to New York, students are a source of pride If you’ve ever attended a community event, chances are that you’ve experienced the tremendous artistic talents of our high school students. Maybe you’ve spotted them in numerous community parades, including Independence Day, Memorial Day or the annual tree lighting in Downers Grove. In the summer, they play jazz riffs in Fishel Park. On Thanksgiving morning, they sing and perform at the annual Bonfield Express, a fundraiser named in honor of District 99 Teacher Jim Bonfield. Our students’ talents are appreciated near and far and wide. They’ve traveled extensively in Illinois and across the U.S.; one highlight last January was the South High Mustangs performing at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. Internationally, our students have performed in numerous places in Europe; one highlight in 2011 was the North High Trojans performing at the New Year’s Day Parade in London. North High and South High share the spotlight equally, and on March 2, 2015, students will tour together and perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City. We are filled with great anticipation for this trip and have been rehearsing with professional guest musicians to prepare. Tickets are available at www.carnegiehall.org. We also have reached out and invited District 99 alumni in the New York area to attend. When our students take their show on the road, they represent everyone back at home – and they take this responsibility seriously. The highest compliments we receive are not only for the quality of their performance but also for the conduct of their character. Both on and off the stage, our students are poised and respectful. The opportunities our students have at home and abroad are a direct result of our community’s commitment to the arts in the schools. All sides of town are united when it comes to supporting our programs. We know this professionally and also personally; each of us is raising a family in the community. Thank you for your support of our musical, visual and performing arts. We hope to see you for any of our performances in 2015. You are always welcome to attend – both at home and on the road.

The poster for “The Interview” is among the other movie posters at Hollywood Blvd. Cinema promoting upcoming showings at the Woodridge theater.

It’s great to see a local business standing tall for the American way. Owners of Hollywood Blvd. didn’t hesitate for a second at the opportunity to screen “The Interview,” despite threats of danger from an anonymous cyberhacker. We as journalists know as well as anyone the power of freedom of speech, so for the theater’s owners to stand up for that American right in the face of terrorist threats is quite noble and patriotic. Hats off to them. Here’s hoping you had a great 2014 and that 2015 is even better. A lot happened in our communities in the past year, and it’s been our honor and privilege to bring you the details of those stories and the fascinating people who make the news. Now that commissioner [Sean] Durkin has had a ruling by an ad hoc board put together by the village and can run for election as commissioner of Downers Grove, I’m wondering who’s going to have to pay for the attorney that the Village Board members had to hire to advise them if Durkin could run because he failed to fulfill those obligations on the application for being eligible to run. Is Durkin going to pay for the advice the village got … or do the taxpayers have to pay for it?

We just wanted to send our thanks to you, next-door neighbor. Thank you for not delivering our package that was mistakenly delivered to your home instead of ours four days before Christmas. Thank you for holding on to it for a whole six days and not bringing it over. We truly had a great time making multiple calls to the shipping company and post office looking for our missing package. Most importantly, we thank you for giving up our package to the postal inspector and having him bring it over. Next time you happen to get our mail on accident, just wave us over when you see us, we’ll walk the 50 feet from our front door to yours to get our mail. I’m sorry you couldn’t enjoy the very expensive contents of the package after opening it and seeing what it was, but hey there’s always next year. I’m a 62-year-old black man, and I hate that all this race stuff, black and white, is going on. I will never understand how all this got started. Back in the day, black people had to go in the back door or sit in the back of the bus, and white people could make them get up so they could sit down. Why did all this happen? Why couldn’t we have love from the beginning and stop all this hate? I don’t understand how the color of your skin [matters]. God made us all, we are all God’s children and I can’t understand all this hate.

Investing in caring communities is a priority One of the things I love about this time of year is the extra generosity of heart that seems to overflow from the people around me – be it an extra pair of hands to help load up a car to bring toys to a domestic violence shelter or someone letting you into traffic during a busy commute on Ogden Avenue. Everywhere I look, it feels like everyone is in the mood to go that extra mile. This excites me because at the township I think one of the most important roles we play is working with community to make our world a better place. On Dec. 8, we were able to thank some of those community members who selflessly

COMMUNITY VOICE Lori Wrzesinski give of their time, energy and other resources to make Downers Grove Township what it is: a great place to work and live. There are so many individuals and organizations we collaborate with that it is always difficult to choose who we want to acknowledge. Reflecting on 2014, two major programs stood out as worthy of the extra special recognition at our annual luncheon. Our Senior Advisory

Council and S.A.L.T. (Seniors and Lawmen Together) committee worked tirelessly to launch its first Car Care Clinic for seniors. While many were involved in organizing this highly successful event Sept. 20, there were three who really demonstrated their commitment to community with their efforts. Cpl. Mike Urso of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department, Lynn Dralle of the Westmont Fire Department and Alice Krampits of the Westmont Park District Senior Center were humble as they accepted a small token of our thanks for the level of dedication they contributed

to this program and so many others in our township. Another group of individuals who continue to inspire me with their insight, compassion and good hearts are those high school students who serve in the township’s peer jury program. Just celebrating the completion of its 14th year, the program would not have the impact it does without their dedication. This year, we highlighted three who all started as freshman and now, as seniors, will leave behind big shoes to fill. Surrounded by proud parents and grandparents, we were able to thank Bob Keding and Rucha Patel from

Downers Grove South High School and Damian Margarites from Downers Grove North High School. Their outstanding demonstration of character has been a constant source of inspiration to me. The township always has tried to collaborate with the communities within our borders to make them places we can all be excited and proud to be a part of, and we want our partners in these endeavors to know how much we appreciate and value each and every one of them.

La Buona Vita brings Italy to La Grange LA GRANGE – When you’re craving the taste of Italy, there’s no need to empty your savings account on plane tickets and hotel stays. Just head to downtown La Grange and visit La Buona Vita to experience delicious, homemade Italian fare. On a stormy December evening, my brother and I decided we were in the mood for a home-cooked, hearty Italian meal, and decided to give La Buona Vita a try. Eager to satisfy our appetites, we perused the long-sheet menu tempting us with everything from steak and lamb chops to seafood. To open the meal, we ordered fried calamari, fully aware of the amount of calories we were about to consume. Once we’d savored the well-prepared appetizer, our server brought our dinner salads and two generously portioned pasta dishes. My fellow diner chose the Linguine Viareggio, featuring linguine with mussels, baby clams and scallops dressed in a lively pomodoro sauce. The meal, according to my brother, had the perfect amount of spicy kick. While my taste buds usually crave a heap of spices, I decided to order the Rigatoni Emilio – pairing the pasta with fresh mozzarella, homemade marinara and garlic. The sauce was light and tasty, a great complement to the creamy mozzarella. After we consumed every last, delectable bite of our food, both my brother and I leaned back and sighed, knowing full well not one more ounce could make its way to our stomachs – we were stuffed. The restaurant also features gluten-free recipes including pasta dishes, so no one has to miss out on the pleasures of Italian dining. And the elegant bar offers craft beer on tap, along with select wines from around the globe. The bar is a focal point along the sleek dining room, where large windows look onto the cityscape. During our next visit, the dinner menu won’t be the only one on my radar, because I’m leaving room for one of the tempting dessert selections: La Buona Vita’s Molten Chocolate Cake. It promises a warm chocolate cake with a gooey center served with vanilla ice cream and raspberry sauce. On our visit, we found the food alone was enough to warrant a return trip, but the service added to the experience. Not only was our server attentive and extremely helpful when

YEAR IN REVIEW

Monica Synett file photo - msynett@shawmedia.com

Downers Grove North senior Gabriele Serniute swims the breaststroke in the 200-yard medley relay in November at the state meet. The Trojans tied for second place and won a second straight state trophy.

DGN, DGS athletes have stellar showings in 2014 With the calendar about to flip from 2014 to 2015, there is not better time to honor the sensational performances the athletes from Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South enjoyed this year.

Downers Grove North

Girls swimming captures second straight state trophy

Shaw Media file photo

Downers Grove North’s Stephanie Urbancik rounds the bend May 24 during the 800-meter run at the state meet. Urbancik earned a state medal in that race and also as part of the 4x800 relay.

A year after capturing their first state trophy with a second-place finish at the 2013 state meet, the Trojans girls swimming team repeated the feat Nov. 22 at the state meet at Evanston High School by scoring 118 points to tie Rosary for second place. Led by a great senior class that includes Division I recruits Gabriele Serniute (Illinois) and Emily Albrecht (Ohio State), as well as University of Chicago signee Daria Wick, DGN won a sectional title before the state final. At Evanston, North dominated the relays, taking first in the 200-yard freestyle

relay, second in the 200 medley relay and fourth in the 400 freestyle relay. Serniute also took second in the 200 individual medley, while Albrecht finished fourth in the 50 freestyle.

Ryan Clevenger finishes fourth at 3A cross country state final

Downers Grove North senior Ryan Clevenger again showed why he is one of the best runners in Illinois at the Nov. 9 IHSA Class 3A cross country state final. Clevenger crossed the finish line at Peoria’s Detweiller Park in 14:24, good for fourth place among all runners. His finish was eight seconds better than his previous best time of the season, a 14:32 that he also recorded at Peoria earlier in the fall. Additionally, Clevenger improved upon his 2013 state final time, when he ran a 14:38 and came in seventh place. After the final, Clevenger announced that he will run next season for the University of Wisconsin. The Trojans boys cross country

team qualified for the state final and finished 13th out of 26 teams.

Trojan runners capture multiple relay, individual state medals

Two quartets of Trojan runners kept impressive streaks alive on back-to-back weekends at the girls and boys state track meets. On May 24, the Trojans’ 4x800-meter relay team comprised of Emma Moravec, Margaret Schaub, Zayna Jan and Stephanie Urbancik secured the fifth straight all-state finish for the relay. Their fourth-place finish (9:14.16) was the best showing since the 2011 quartet won state. Urbancik was part of the 2011 unit and she added a second state medal this year in the 800 run. Not to be outdone, the quartet of Tony Zea, Jack Diamond, Zac Christensen and Ryan Clevenger brought home the fourth all-state finish for North’s boys 4x800 since 2009

Senior Brethauer earns 2ndplace medal at state gymnastics

Thomas Brethauer ended his high school gymnastics career on a high note by tying for second place on the still rings at the May 17 state meet at Hinsdale Central. The senior posted 9.1 on the apparatus, good for a tie for second place and just a shade behind the state champion. Next year, he will be competing in club gymnastics at the University of Illinois.

Downers Grove South

Mustangs advance to second supersectional in school history

An undefeated run through the West Suburban Gold conference was just the beginning for the Mustangs’ baseball team, which went on to capture regional and sectional crowns and push highly-regarded St. Rita to the limit before falling, 2-1, in the supersectional game. South was one of the final eight teams left in the playoffs. It was the second time the DGS baseball team reached a supersectional (the Mustangs first advanced to the supersectional in 2005). Three-year varsity starters Zac Taylor and Joe Becht as well as seniors Chris Pedrak, Danny Spinuzza and Matt Zinnecker were regulars who set the tone for the Mustangs’ team that enjoyed its best playoff run in Downers Grove South school history.

Mustangs softball team plays for sectional title

Like their baseball diamond counterparts, the Mustangs of the softball diamond went undefeated in conference play, but there were more highlights to come later. Behind seniors like Jess Andree, Caitlyn Daly, Dana Kremer and Melissa Orton, Downers Grove South outscored its two opponents in the regional round of the playoffs by a combined 17-1

DGS duo takes home track and field state medals

Downers Grove South athletes made their names known at the girls state track meet in May. Sophomore Michaela Hackbarth qualified for state in two events and had a stellar showing in one of them, placing second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:13.0. Senior Abby Kargol went out with a bang, setting new personal and school records in the 3,200, finishing fifth with a time of 10:50.04.

Hobbs takes 5th at state wrestling DGS wrestler Mike Hobbs was a force on the mat all season at 285 pounds. The 6-foot-3 senior posted an impressive 34-4 record during the regular season, coming in second at sectionals and earning his

second-straight trip to the 3A state tournament. At state, Hobbs won two of three preliminary matches, then split his final two matches, defeating Lincoln-Way Central’s Bryan Ditchman, 3-1, to snatch a fifth-place medal.

Leto leads tennis state effort

With junior Tony Leto leading the way, Downers Grove South’s boys tennis team won a sectional title and then finished fourth in the state with 29 points, only five points back of third place New Trier. At state, Leto advanced to the singles quarterfinals and finished sixth in the state. Sophomore Christian San Andres advanced to the fourth round in the singles main draw for top 16 finish. persectional victory against Mother McAuley on Nov. 8 avenged the Redwings’ only loss of the season, and after getting over that hurdle they breezed to their third title in four years with victories against Normal Community High (25-15, 25-22) in a state semifinal and Libertyville (2510, 25-10) in the championship. Benet’s balanced attack was too much for most teams to handle. In the state title match, Veronica Snelling and Dana Griffin both laid down eight kills, Marissa Tassone had five and Tiffany Clark and Rachael Fara had three apiece. ketball teams in its history, but the 2013-14 squad may go down as the school’s best. Led by 6-foot-9 Xavier recruit Sean O’Mara and point guard Collin Pellettieri, the Redwings caught fire at the right time, winning their final five regular season game and four straight in the playoffs to win regional and sectional titles and reach the supersectional game against Glenbard North, where they won a 62-59 cliffhanger. In its first state trip since the 1982-83 season, Benet played in its first state title game and earned its highest showing with a second-place trophy after losing 46-44 against Young. It was Benet’s first state trophy since 1979.
