In the year ahead, he said, Wheaton will streamline many of its services online, update its website, install LED lights across the city and draw more business. After the speech, he said he anticipates the council will begin planning how to implement the Downtown Wheaton Strategic Plan in 2015, including funding, but warned against

the city’s emerald ash borer removal and replacement program, which has removed about 5,400 parkway ash trees with about 950 remaining. Additionally, he discussed the 4.1 miles of roadway and 2,505 sidewalk squares the city improved in 2014. Gresk was upbeat about Wheaton’s financial situation, including its AAA bond rating. He said, according to ETC, it is possible residents associate the state’s financial problems with the city. “Okay, pay attention now, are you ready?” he jokingly said. “For that reason, I reiterate, Wheaton’s status as a top bond-rated city, and I’d point out

expecting major movement. “It’s $65 [million] to do it, and ... we’re not going to spend down reserves to do that,” he said, adding the city would have to build up public and private partners first. “That’s not going to get done now, that’s a 20- 30-year plan. We’re still doing stuff from the last one 30 years ago. You have to plan to get to your destination.” Gresk expects business growth to continue and said new apartment complexes such as Wheaton 121, Courthouse Square and the renovated Wheaton Center have brought consumers to downtown. One topic he was less committal about is the future of the city’s plans to combat flooding. City Manager Don Rose previously said to Suburban Life he expected the next city survey on the matter to be finished in late January, but Gresk said he had not heard anything official on the subject, nor whether it would spur action. “We’re working with the county, there are flood relief programs there, which we try to avail ourselves to, we’ll work with,” he said. “It’s a slow and tedious process and we’ll work our way through it. I know that sounds wimpy, and it is, but we’re working our way through it.”

WHEATON – Despite the cold weather, Wheaton Mayor Mike Gresk was largely sunny at his annual State of the City address Jan. 15 during a Wheaton Chamber of Commerce lunch at Arrowhead Golf Club. Gresk discussed several of the city’s major projects in 2014 before looking to the future of Wheaton. “For the past eight years, I have been honored to come here and share a highlight reel of the previous year to update you on the city’s financial health, the challenges the city encountered and achievements celebrated,” he said. He began by painting a rosy picture of the relationship between the city and its residents, backed by numbers from Wheaton’s 2014 community satisfaction survey. Wheaton was rated at or above the national average in 54 of 66 assessed areas. Ninety-four percent of residents felt satisfied with city safety and 90 percent positively rated quality of life in Wheaton, according to consultant ETC Institute. Gresk said the survey “identified some areas where the city can focus its attention,” including streets, sidewalks and stormwater management. During the speech, he praised the city’s response to record low temperatures and high snowfall in 2014 and said crews worked hard to preserve salt, keep roadways clear and patch potholes caused by the weather. Gresk also updated the public on

It has hosted an outdoor ice bar with specialty drinks, which included a fire pit, Barrington said, and was wildly successful. here have been studies that show untreated hearing loss may accelerate gray matter atrophy in the brain. Researches have used MRI equipment to study the brains of those with hearing loss and those with normal range of hearing. hese studies found that people with hearing loss showed less brain activity while listening to complex sentences compared to those with normal hearing. Our very sense of cognition, meaning one’s awareness and connection to life around them, comes more through the auditory (hearing) sense than all the other four senses combined. If the auditory sense is the dominant sense vital to a person’s awareness, we should expect changes that occur to this sense

he auditory system starts to display its age ater the age of 40. Just like the rest of the body, the auditory system starts to slow down. hose with normal hearing have a diferent listening experience in loud, noisy environments at 45 years of age than they did when they were 20 years of age. he brain can keep up with faster stimuli at a younger age. It’s important to remember that as hearing ability declines, corrective means are necessary not only to improve hearing but to also preserve the brain. People who elect to correct their hearing typically are happier, more socially connected, have more earning power and are healthier than their counterparts that don’t correct their hearing. An Audiologist can assess the hearing to determine if corrective means are necessary and will beneit the patient.

A salute to Ed Kregor of Wheaton – a World War II veteran who received the French Legion of Honour Medal in a ceremony this month. Kregor aided the citizens of France while serving as a pilot in wartime, and we thank him for his service. Congratulations to Wheaton resident Kathy Hopinkah Hannan, who is a national managing partner of diversity at KPMG and was recently elected the first Native American national president of Girl Scouts of the USA. We’re proud to have such a strong role model for young women living in Wheaton.

The 2015 new year in downtown Wheaton holds great promise for property owners and individual business owners within the district, while also compelling us to reflect back on the progress gained in 2014. COMMUNITY Last year, downtown Wheaton welcomed 16 new busiVOICE nesses including Kilwins, Mile Jim Long Records, Moore Toys Mathieson & Gadgets, Peet’s Coffee and Tea, Joan’s Place, A Different Box of Crayons, Westside Improv Studio, Viatrix Health, Prairie Path Books, Art and Glass Studio, Subway, P.S. Flowers, M & Co. Salon, Next Yoga, Armand’s Pizzeria and Dry City Brew Works. Each of these new ventures represents the dreams and passion each owner has for their business. I would like to think their decision to open in downtown Wheaton also is a reflection of what the Downtown Wheaton Association can offer, as well as the city of Wheaton. The opening of the DuPage Medical Group office building at 150 E. Willow Ave. in April of 2014 is an impressive example of new development and investment in downtown Wheaton. The Downtown Wheaton Association anticipates an equally favorable year in 2015. We can look forward to the opening of Gia Mia Pizza Bar at 106 N. Hale St. within the first quarter of 2015 and the renovation of 111-113 N. Main St., which will be the new home of Luong Loi Restaurant. A $30 million modernization of the Wheaton Center Apartments, which came under new ownership in 2014, will continue through 2015. Wheaton 121, the luxury apartment complex completed in 2013, is now boasting an occupancy rate of 80 percent as of January 2015. Downtown Wheaton’s success and appeal continues to capture the interest of potential new business and we can expect future openings in the new year. Downtown Wheaton is the destination in 2015 for community festivals, running events, celebrations and live entertainment. A total of 26 special events will be within downtown Wheaton and Memorial Park. From Vintage Rides to the Dickens of a Christmas parade, many of the traditional favorites are planned along with the French Market, new festivals and running events. In 2014, the city of Wheaton officially adopted a 20-year streetscape and strategic plan for downtown Wheaton. The Downtown Wheaton Association is committed to working in partnership with the city of Wheaton and supporting this far-reaching project starting in 2015. There is much to be thankful for and much more to be achieved in downtown Wheaton. As the president of the Downtown Wheaton Association, I wish you all the best in 2015 and invite you to continue to patronize our businesses and attend and support the many community events scheduled in 2015.

Underpass could save lives

Pets are part of the family Kudos to the person who wrote that “reminder” to keep pets inside. If you have a pet, it is indeed a “member of the family” and should be treated as such. At the very least, they should be treated right. This means they live inside, have proper food and vet care. They should be housed inside during hot weather as well as cold weather and rainy weather. In other words, they need to live inside just as their “pawrents” do. People who cannot or won’t do this should not have pets.

What’s in store for our suburban market Find out at the Suburban Life Economic Forecast Luncheon. Experts the year ahead and sound off on the biggest challenges and opportunities industries here in the western suburbs. This event promises information, expertise, and business networking

DATE: January 27, 2015 REGISTRATION: 11:00 to 11:30am LUNCHEON: 11:30am to 1:30pm LOCATION: Drury Lane Conference Center | 100 Drury Lane TICKETS PRICE: $40 per person - table of 10

This section of the village is about oneeighth the size of the total. Ridiculous.

Ridiculous complaints It never ceases to amaze me of the stupidity of some people, especially some of those in the Sound Off section of the Suburban Life. One person complained about plowing of streets and snow left on his driveway. He said the village should come up with a solution to this. Do you have any ideas? I’ll bet not. Another complaint was about getting on Ogden Avenue from the Burlington area. The advice was to install a traffic signal. What kind of a signal, to do what and where? In many cases, traffic control signals do not help but add to problems. Look at the Forest Hills section of Western Springs. There is a total of more than 95 stop signs there – all installed at the insistence of residents.

Technology not required A few years ago, The New York Times had an article reporting that most of the schools in the Silicon Valley area did not allow any electronic devices in the classroom and encouraged the parents not to let their children to use them at home. The students actually learned how to add, subtract, multiply, etc., and use their brain and memory. When educated and it was needed, the students could learn how to use a calculator or computer in a few hours or less. If this were true here you might be able to find a young checkout server in a store that could actually make change without using the cash register.

I’d like to respond to the overpass/ underpass in Glen Ellyn. I think an overpass/underpass is more important than a pool situation that was going here. Also an underpass from the train station from the north side to the south side is also very important. I think it could save lives in the future.

Couple to open PRO Martial Arts in Wheaton By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com

If you go

WHEATON – An entrepreneurial couple has merged their shared interest in fitness and confidence building to start a new martial arts franchise in Wheaton. Paul and Amanda Southwell of Oswego will open PRO Martial Arts on Saturday at 820 Roosevelt Road, Suite 104. When the two got married in June 2013, Paul sold his house. With the windfall, the pair decided to pursue a business and do some social good along the way. “[Our franchise consultant] looked at many, many different franchises with us, and we decided on PRO Martial Arts because of its message of physical fitness, self-discipline ... and anti-bullying and anti-sexual predator programs,” Paul said. In addition to child and adult fitness and martial arts classes led by Chief Instructor Marquinn McDonald, PRO Martial Arts offers an ARMOR prevention program, which teaches self-confidence, conflict avoidance and how to identify and get out of an

ple who are trying to bother you,” Paul said. “Often, bullies look for the weak, the socially isolated, the not-confident or ones who are reactive.” That message is important for both

Amanda and Paul, Amanda said. She is a hospital social worker who counsels teens with depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts and said the mentorship and character development the couple hope to foster could have helped the young people she works with. “A lot of the teenagers I work with were bullied in elementary and middle school,” she said. Paul said his work as an elementary school assistant principal has taught him social and emotional learning are as important as reading, writing and arithmetic. Wheaton proved to be an underserved market for martial arts fitness and self-confidence programs, he said, and seemed like a natural fit.

Business experts to anchor Economic Forecast event By KELLI MURRAY kmurray@shawmedia.com What is the economic forecast for the suburban market in 2015? A panel of experts will provide their insights during the Economic Forecast 2015 event that will be hosted by Suburban Life on Tuesday at Drury Lane Conference Center in Oakbrook Terrace. Panelists slated for the event are Anthony Griffin, executive director of Berwyn Development Corp.; Heath Ashenfelter, division vice president, True Value Company Chicago; Timothy H. Ricordati, dean of the School for Professional Studies, Elmhurst College; Richard W. Reichert, president and CEO of Community Bank of Elmhurst; and Theresa Schulz, Schulz

Properties Ltd., Downers Grove. “I’m excited about the slate of panelists,” Griffin said. “It’s a good cross section and I think it will be a lively discussion but also very comprehensive.” Schulz will speak of her more than 20 years of commercial leasing experience in DuPage and surrounding counties. “I will highlight the market areas of interest within the industry and the strategy behind expanding tenants,” Schulz said. “... Both commercial property owners and businesses/tenants will greatly benefit by the knowledge shared within my segment of this upcoming presentation.” The moderator will be Dave Lemery, Suburban Life Media editor, and the keynote speaker will be John Quigley, president and CEO of the El-

mhurst Chamber of Commerce. Quigley said he expects attendees to gain insight into the intricacies of the economy. “The better business owners understand their place in the economic ladder, the better prepared they’ll be to take a step up rather than a step down,” Quigley said. Lemery plans to prompt a conversation about how changes in the economy in recent years will impact the year ahead. “We’re still dealing with the aftermath of the recession and a recovery that has been terrific for some but has left others behind,” Lemery said. “What are the opportunities and risks that businesses and individuals need to look out for in 2015? I’m eager to hear the responses.”

The Importance of Staging BEFORE

AFTER

You hear the word staging being thrown around when discussing real estate. It’s on TV, in design magazines, and ALL OVER the internet.

Statistically, staged homes spend 83% less time on the market than unstaged homes. According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), the average staging investment is between 1 and 3% of the home’s asking price, which generates a return of 8-10%. That’s a smart investment!

BEFORE

AFTER

Quaid and Rooney work closely with our sellers in preparing their home for market. Our goal is to help our clients move onto the next chapter in their lives by selling their home quickly at the highest price. Our staging services ensure that your home is presented in the most desirable position to attract buyers and realtors, which creates the “wow!” factor that leads to the buyer’s response. Contact us to discuss how we can help you with your home selling goals. Sincerely,

Kahy Quaid

REAL ESTATE

What exactly does it mean when we talk about staging? If you have watched HGTV’s Designed To Sell – which has featured our very own Kathy Quaid – you know what the expertise of a real estate stager can do for a home. Staging is about setting a scene and “dressing” your home to appeal to buyers, and you have a very short window of time to create that positive first impression. In person, buyers form an opinion of your home within the first 7-10 seconds, and on the internet your home only has 1-2 seconds before you are clicked ‘out of site’ and ‘out of mind’.

Falcons hoops squad builds upon streak at Downers Grove North Winter Classic By DAVE OWEN msleditorial@shawmedia.com

ville North was keyed by Traversa (16 points), Jordan (11) and Anthony (10). “Nick Jordan and Nick Traversa have been solid all year game in and game out,” Brackmann said. “They play great defense and are consistent scorers, and do a great job of leading us. We have a nice mix of senior leadership and younger guys stepping up at different times.” The Falcons will need all hands on board Friday when they host Lake Park (16-3) in a key conference battle. “We’re going to have to be at our best,” Brackmann said. “Lake Park is going to pressure man-to-man and run really good motion. It’s certainly a big game for us. Winning home games in the DVC is a must.” A weekend two-game sweep and Heggeland’s emergence are good signs heading into the showdown. “It’s a great building weekend, just keeping the wins rolling,” Heggeland said. “We’re practicing hard, playing unselfishly and doing whatever it takes to win.”

Wheaton Warrenville South The Tigers wrapped up play at the two-day Martin Luther King tournament they hosted by losing to York 44-39 and Benet 71-62 in overtime on Monday. Ryan Scudder scored 11 points to lead the way in the semifinal loss and Josh Ruggles netted 20 points and Eric Rasch added 16 in the third-place loss to Benet. On Saturday, WWS opened the event by defeating Glenbard East 57-44 and Notre Dame 61-56. Ruggles, who was named to the all-tournament team, scored a combined 53 points, knocking down seven 3-pointers. Bill Ackerman - backerman@shawmedia.com The squad also knocked off Glenbard North 44-39 in DVC play Friday as Wheaton North’s Jake Heggeland scores Saturday against an Oswego East defender in the Downers Grove North Winter Classic. DOWNERS GROVE – A fired-up Jake Heggeland added extra power to Wheaton North’s surging boys basketball team Saturday. The 6-foot-7 senior center erupted for 20 points in just more than three quarters of play to lead the Falcons (11-3, 3-1 in conference) to their sixthstraight win, a 60-33 victory against Oswego East at the Downers Grove North Winter Classic. “I’ve been a little off for a while [combined 10 points in two games the previous weekend] and finally got ticked off enough to get myself going,” Heggeland said. “Jake played really well today,” Wheaton North coach Dave Brackmann said. “And we did a good job of finding him. He was going up strong and getting to the front of the rim. That’ll be a good confidence booster for him going forward.” With Oswego East (3-12) up 11-8 after one quarter, a decisive 25-6 Falcons run in the second quarter featured seven points by Nick Traversa (of his nine overall) and six by Heggeland. Luke Anthony (13 points) and Nick Jordan (eight) were other offensive standouts for Wheaton North, which led 48-28 after three quarters. Heggeland and most of the Falcon starters left the game with 6:04 left and the score 56-28. “We were a little worried about starting slow after a good win last night [53-40 against Naperville North],” Brackmann said. “But we definitely picked up our defensive intensity in the second quarter, and that led to good offense. “We turned it over too much in the first quarter. It was good for us to play another good defensive game, and we got the ball inside and got a lot of layups and easy baskets.” Oswego East was the ninth Wheaton North opponent held under 50 points this season. “They’re a very good team,” Wolves coach Steve Szymanski said. “In the second quarter their defense made it hard for us to run any of our stuff, and it kind of piled in from there.” The Friday win against Naper-

short at McDonald’s Shootout By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – Without a true inside presence for the first time in quite a while, the Wheaton North girls basketball team is learning to adapt to a new style of play this winter. That tutorial continued at the McDonald’s Shootout at Willowbrook High School on Jan. 17, where the Falcons hung tough with a talented Bogan squad before falling 55-49. “We’ve always had an inside presence,” Wheaton North coach Dave Eaton said. “This is the first year we don’t have that so we are trying to do some things differently and get some looks attacking the basket. “We’ve had a tough stretch here, we played a fantastic team in Iowa [on Jan. 10], then Naperville Central and Bogan and then we turn around and play Wheaton Warrenville South [tonight]. Hopefully we can build off this game and make a run.” After opening the game with an 8-0 spurt, Wheaton North trailed 1411 at the end of one quarter and 23-19 by halftime. That deficit swelled to as many as nine points in the fourth before the Falcons clawed their way back, pulling within 51-49 on Kelly Thornton’s fifth 3-pointer of the contest. But Bogan made four free throws in the final minute to prevail. “We knew they were a good team coming in,” Thornton said. “We wanted to work together and focus on our defense. Our team, we’ve got that fight and we never give up. Even down the stretch when we were down nine, we kept fighting back.” Thornton finished with 23 points. Emari Jones added nine points and Hannah Swider scored eight. “We wanted to come out and get better and work on the things we need to work on,” Jones said. “We wanted

to focus on working as a team, passing the ball and getting our offense going and our defense going.” Wheaton North was coming off a 59-56 DVC loss to Naperville Central on Jan. 15 as Redhawks freshman Mia Latstigala made a 3-pointer as time expired. The Falcons were outscored 24-13 by the Redhawks in the fourth quarter. Emari Jones tallied 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while Kelly Thornton posted 17 points and five rebounds. “There has been a lot of learning stuff for us,” Eaton said. “We are young and a lot of our kids haven’t been in these type of situations. For us, to have these two tough games in a row, it was a chance for us to work on getting better.” The team travels to Wheaton South tonight for a 7:15 p.m. matchup. Wheaton North is tied for first place with one league loss while the Tigers have two.

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – If recent games are any indication, the Wheaton Warrenville South girls basketball team is playing the type of defense the program was built on. Now the Tigers need their offense to catch up. Holding Hillcrest to 40 percent shooting while forcing 22 turnovers, WWS still found itself on the wrong side of a 43-39 score at the McDonald’s Shootout hosted by Willowbrook High School on Saturday. “We’ve been playing great defense and giving ourselves opportunities,” Wheaton Warrenville South coach Rob Kroehnke said. “That’s what we have talked about, we have to take advantage of it. We are just not shooting well. We have to put the ball in the basket. “Between free throws and threepoint percentage and two-point percentage, we are making it tough on ourselves. If you hold people to 40 points, you should be in the game most of the time. You’ve got to score more

than 39, though.” The Tigers led 10-7 after the opening eight minutes before falling behind 2221 at halftime. That margin increased to as many as seven in the fourth quarter before the squad sliced the deficit to one on a free throw by Sarah Struebing with less than a minute left. But a basket and two free throws by Hillcrest sealed the win. On Jan. 16, WWS knocked off Naperville North 49-45 in a DuPage Valley conference contest that was originally scheduled for Jan. 8. The Tigers also beat the Huskies 52-38 earlier in the season in a tournament. “That was a great win against Naperville North,” Kroehnke said. WWS is 3-2 in league play heading into tonight’s matchup with Wheaton North and stand one game out of the top spot. With just six teams in the DVC this year, there are only 10 conference games. “Three teams have one loss and we have two,” Kroehnke said. “It should be a fun couple of weeks here, that’s for sure. The season is winding down and we will continue working hard.”

Wheaton Warrenville South Senior | Basketball Why she was selected: Linebarger filled the stat sheet in Saturday’s game at the McDonald’s Shootout.

Schmid: How much improvement have you seen from your team since the start of the season? Linebarger: I’d say a huge improve-

ment. A lot of these games, it really comes down to the little things. And once we can grasp the whole game, that’s what will do it for us. But we’ve been really playing as a team.

Schmid: What can you take away from the hard-fought loss to Hillcrest at the shootout? Linebarger: We’ve been playing a lot of teams like that and I think that’s why our record is where it is. You learn a lot from a loss, like the little

things that you did wrong. You can still learn from a win, too, so I would totally be in favor of that. But playing these teams gets us ready for conference.

Schmid: You guys are in the thick of the DVC race, is that a major goal for the team? Linebarger: We talk about that almost every day at practice. We want ’15 on the board. We’ve won it four years in a row and it would be awesome to come back and see ’15 on the board. Right now it is anybody’s game.
