WHEATON – Just when it seemed like one election season was ending, another is about to begin. The Wheaton City Clerk’s Office began accepting nonpartisan primary petitions Monday from local candidates seeking to run for City Council in the April 2015 General Election. Up for grabs are two fouryear councilman at-large positions, as well as the chance to challenge mayoral incumbent Mike Gresk, who has previously won two consecutive terms. Gresk filed his petition for candidacy Monday morning. “I’m very keen and happy to run again for a third term,” he said. “I think good things have happened in Wheaton during the last seven years ... I know there are things that need to be addressed, but I think the city is moving the right way.” He cited Wheaton’s bond

Gresk said he hadn’t heard whether anyone else was running against him but said if he were challenged he believed his record, status as a “known commodity” and decades of work in the community would speak for themselves. Also up for election are the seats occupied by council members John Prendiville and Lieutenant Governor-elect Evelyn Pacino Sanguinetti. Prendiville delivered mate-
CORRECTIONS An article in the Aug. 7 issue of Suburban Life about a 7-Eleven seeking a liquor license mistakenly stated the license had been granted by the Wheaton City Council. The license was granted Nov. 3. Suburban Life regrets the error. An article about the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s ongoing search for an executive director published in the Nov. 13 issue of Suburban Life misstated the employer of former director candidate John Lapinski. Lapinski works in the Office of the Chief Judge of the 18th Judicial Court. Suburban Life regrets the error.

rials to the clerk’s office later Monday to retain his at-large seat, City Clerk Sharon Barrett-Hagen said. Sanguinetti picked up a candidate packet in August but is expected to resign before being sworn in alongside Governor-elect Bruce Rauner early next year. Environmental Improvement Commission member Tony Lyons also submitted his paperwork Monday, Barrett-Hagen said, and is planning to run for an at-large position. Neither Prendiville nor Lyons were immediately avail-
able for comment. Three others received candidate packets but had yet to turn them in, Barrett-Hagen said Tuesday. They include conservative www.gopillinois.com blogger David Diersen, Planning and Zoning Board member Suzanne Fitch and resident Frank Hudetz. All candidates are required to collect 81 signatures from Wheaton residents and submit nominating petitions by Nov. 24, Barrett-Hagen said. Papers will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at the clerk’s office. Should the city ballot hold five or more candidates for mayor or nine or more between the two at-large positions, a nonpartisan primary election will take place Feb. 24, 2015, before the April 7 General Election. For information, visit www.wheaton.il.us or contact Barrett-Hagen at sbarrett-hagen@wheaton.il.us or 630-2602012.

WHEATON – A pair of professional dancers are hoping to bring high-level ballet to Wheaton. Guillermo Leyva and Vilma Machin, married Cuban immigrants and long-time Chicago ballet dancers, opened Alma Dance School on Sept. 2 at 246 E. Geneva Road. The two said they chose Wheaton not only because they enjoyed the suburbs and hoped to move in the near future but because they thought there was a void of high-quality, professional ballet lessons in the area. “We teach a Cuban style of dance, and it’s a very good and strong program,” Leyva said. “It takes from every style in the world – France, opera, Parisian ballet, American ... And it has medical research on muscles on how to work to avoid injury.” Leyva said they have about 22 students but hope to grow quickly and host classes throughout the day for all levels – in particular those who are serious about the craft. “We’re willing to work with every kid – everyone has potential,” Machin said. “It’s about the individual student, and we try to get the best out of them.” Both Leyva and Machin started their dancing careers in Cuba before age 10. Machin said her experience growing up makes her a better teacher. She wasn’t a natural dancer, she remembers, and when an instructor tried to push her to be ready for an entrance exam, she tore her hamstring at age 9 and went through a grueling year of rehab to get her flexibility back.

WHEATON – Homeowners will see their property taxes increase next year after Community Unit School District 200 finalized a tax levy hike Nov. 12. The Board of Education voted 6-1 for the 4.95 percent increase, which is capped by the 2013 Consumer Price Index and was assumed in the district’s balanced $157 million budget passed in September. The spike translates to an estimated $128.8 million total levy, up from $122.6 million last year. However, Assistant Superintendent of Business Operations Bill Farley said the district likely wouldn’t collect all of the 4.95 percent, and if it did, it wouldn’t come out of residents’ pockets. Barring referendum, Illi-

next year in district property taxes. Districts often levy for more than the Consumer Price Index to try to capture revenue generated by new property, which is not held to the cap. New construction has added an additional percentage to the levy amount in the past, Farley said. He said it was important districts overshoot to meet future needs, especially when facing potential unknowns. These include state issues such as Senate Bill 16, which would reallocate funds and cost the district more than $9 million over four years, the income tax sunset and a possible pension cost shift. District 200 also has to grapple with a new collective bargaining process in the spring, as well as health care costs. But not all was bad news. Farley said while the Consumer Price Index, new construction and homes’ estimated assessed values had fallen since 2009, Milton Township’s values have begun to level off. “That means property values are starting to come back,” Farley said. “Also, new growth is up in the district as well ... we’re starting to see that number go back up closer to where we were in the early 2000s, and that new growth is hopefully a sign of the economy coming back.”

By NATHAN LURZ WHEATON – Wheaton author Margaret Philbrick takes on the topic of dementia, along with young love, parental expectations and the life of a world-class musician in her book “A Minor: A Novel of Love, Music & Memory,” which was released in June. The book is on shelves in the area, and the e-book is available at a reduced cost through November in honor of Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. Philbrick recently spoke with Suburban Life reporter Nathan Lurz about the book.

WHEATON CITY COUNCIL 4 THINGS TO KNOW
By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com
Kristin Hartshaw, a trainer at the DuPage Federation on Human Services Reform, said the number of working poor in the county – those who make less than 200 percent of the federal poverty level – has doubled from 1990 to 2011. One in four children in District 200 is identified as low-income, a 221-percent increase from 2000, according to Bright & Early DuPage. Children in DuPage County are three times less likely to get into a Head Start program, which are aimed at educating low-income students ages 5 and under, than those in Cook County. At the same time, DuPage is becoming more diverse, with a growing number of refugee and immigrant families who don’t speak English as a first language, said the federation’s Lourdes Lonergan. Children struggle to adjust to a new setting, and parents often find it challenging to get
involved with their child’s schooling. Ensuring students of all backgrounds have opportunities to succeed in school is the collaborative’s goal, Hartshaw said, and isn’t anything new for the county. “We’re all technically members of a social safety net,” she said. “Having worked in DuPage County for the last almost 15 years, I’m very pleased to say that we have that reputation of networking and working together to maximize our limited resources to address needs.” Jefferson Early Childhood Center Principal Stephanie Farrelly and Easter Seals DuPage & Fox Valley President and CEO Theresa Forthofer
said the collaborative also has potential to identify and assist students with disabilities and delays. “We know that one million children enter kindergarten with unidentified developmental delays and disabilities,” Forthofer said. “And our goal is to change that.” Moving forward, Robson said the collaborative will continue to identify gaps in its system and spread the word. The foundation awarded money to Addison schools in the spring to help start a similar program, and Carol Stream, Villa Park and Bensenville schools have expressed interest in doing so as well, she said.

WHEATON – One year after receiving funding from the DuPage Community Foundation, the Wheaton/Warrenville Early Childhood Collaborative is boasting growth and new relationships. The program, paid for by the foundation’s nonprofit, Bright & Early DuPage, focuses on early childhood education and opportunities for a diversifying and increasingly low-income DuPage County population. The first Bright & Early DuPage grant of $75,000 was awarded to Metropolitan Family Services to set up the collaborative in 2013. It was the initial installment of a three-year grant that, with the foundation’s $5 million endowment, had the potential to turn into a quarter million dollars a year in awarded grants.
By connecting nonprofits, government agencies and service organizations to students, family and staff in Community Unit School District 200, collaborative members believe they can begin to build a continuum of care. “It’s consistently those families where children are not well-prepared for kindergarten that need those resources and those extra services,” said collaborative Director Kathy Robson, at a breakfast meeting Nov. 13 at First Presbyterian Church. When the program was announced last November, there were about 12 organizations committed to opening dialogue and directing clients. That number has doubled, with more on the way, Robson said. The collaborative has also already worked with about 200 families. That investment in the future will be crucial in the coming years, she said.

Used in federal cases and 33 states as of 2014, according to the American Bar Association, RICO laws are touted as key in bringing down criminal organizations. “While Mr. Steele may be the first defendant found guilty of violating our RICO law, I am confident he will not be the last,” said DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin in the release. “This is an important law that will be put to good use as we work to rid our streets of these drug dealers who seek to enrich their lives at the expense of others.” Awaiting trial on similar charges is Andres Garcia, 26, of Chicago who is the ring’s alleged leader. His next court appearance will be Friday. Steele is due in court Dec. 12.

Contest, book explores why ‘Hope Grows Here’

Family Shelter Service recently hosted a writing contest asking: “Has domestic violence affected you or someone you love?” The contest coincided with the release of Family Shelter Service’s new book, “Hope Grows Here: Stories of Resilience from Survivors of Domestic Abuse.” More than 300 submissions were received for the contest and following are some excerpts. Violence in the home was a common theme: “There was a storm inside COMMUNITY my house VOICE You had to learn to weather Maureen We huddled closely, shelMcGuire ter scant, To hold ourselves together. The lightning struck with sudden rage, And gave no siren warning. The wind ripped floorboards from our souls And did not heed the harming.” Others wrote about mothers and children: “My mother was my rock and I was her crutch. I did my best to keep her on her feet while her inner strength inspired me to continue down the path of childhood. When she collapsed on the couch sobbing, I was the one who hugged her, echoing her earlier sentiment that ‘things will get better.’ And she was the one who wiped away my tears after I was cornered by my father and gave me the guidance to live my life to the fullest as I got older. The physical reminders might not fade away with the whisper of time, but I would always be there, a pleasant memory within her fragile heart.” And one remembered the loss of a mother to domestic violence: “My mother’s name is Margaret, but now we spell it ‘g-o-o-db-y-e.’ My father doesn’t have anyone to yell at in the shadows of a prison cell. Now my mother’s in the sunsets; she’s the leaves dancing in the trees.” But there were stories of hope as well: “Looking at my life now, I see that what has happened to me has given me the greatest gift of understanding. I believe that there is more to me than my story. The darkness that once filled my heart is now full of light, gratefulness and compassion. It is filled with each person that I met on my journey, each glance of kindness, each empathetic listening ear.” Many of these stories demonstrate the hopefulness, strength and resourcefulness that make our work with survivors of domestic violence so inspiring. The top three submissions, which can be viewed at familyshelterservice.org, were chosen by best-selling author Adriana Trigiani, whose work includes “Big Stone Gap” and “The Shoemaker’s Wife.” Copies of the book “Hope Grows Here” are available at Amazon.com.

I recently learned something about myself, something I have been in denial over. Cut the ignition I live in Lemont and I was visiting the Lemon Tree around noon Nov. 14. I noticed the vehicle parked a couple of spaces away from my vehicle was a Lemont Police officer’s vehicle. There were several other vehicles there from the police department, but this first vehicle had a plate of 2662. I went in, ordered and I sat down. I noticed the vehicle was there for all of the period of time that I was there. I left and it was still running and there was nobody in it. The vehicle kept on running. To me that’s not saving any money for the village of Lemont.
Hit the brakes on Berkley I wanted to continue to post about traffic on West Avenue [in Elmhurst]: As a resident on Berkley by St. Charles Road by the high school, we experience traffic and speeders constantly, especially during rush hour. The police have been notified about this. People like to use Berkley as a shortcut, but it’s still happening. People need to remember it’s a residential area and to slow down.

Thank you for publishing the teachers’ salaries a few weeks ago for School District 68. What we’ve found in our analysis is about one third of the teachers are making more than $90,000 a year. … Not saying they don’t work very hard for their money, but it just puts a lot of pressure on the taxpayers that pay their salaries. ... They’re supposed to be public servants, so we need to somehow in the next negotiations make tiers based on performance. If the students are performing at more than 90th percentile of the state’s criteria, then, obviously, they would earn that salary, but we’re gonna have to adjust the salaries back at least 10 percent in order for the property taxpayers to be able to afford living in Woodridge, Downers Grove and Darien. Our tax bills are astronomical. … We appreciate all you do, but enough is enough. You are indebted to the taxpayers and your salaries must be addressed accordingly.

Burns reflects on time with District 6 Forest Preserve
WTL Suburban Life • mysuburbanlife.com • Thursday, November 20, 2014 • CD

To the Editor: In the two years I served as District 6 Forest Preserve commissioner, I accomplished a great deal. On my goal of improving transparency, I instituted regular evening meetings, established a functioning ethics committee and voted for video of board meetings to be posted online. Through the publication of an annual report of my work, I let my district know that I lobbied for the district’s first expense-based budget, thus saving several million dollars. And I voted to reduce board member salaries. In addition, I initiated meetings with DuPage United to address their concerns. I continued my education in natural resource management through handson volunteer work and formal classroom courses. I toured the county on bicycle to assess trail connections. I met with individuals and with groups, participated in river cleanup and restoration days – and much more. Party politics never entered into my work with other board members. We worked together with admirable professionalism. We had some tough moments, but we also made great strides within a short time. I am grateful to every member of the board – and to the people in District 6 – for my experiences as commissioner. And while my preference would have been to continue serving as District 6 commissioner, I did not win the election, and so I will step down Dec. 1. A heartfelt “thank you” to the people in District 6 who recognized my commitment to our forest preserves by voting for me. My love of the district and my interest in natural resource management is not limited to an elected position. The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County has something for everyone and I plan to stay involved. Maybe I’ll see you there!

• LEVY Continued from page 4 Only board member Jim Gambaiani voted against the increase, which he also has done in previous years, and which board member Rosemary Swanson questioned, saying it was conflicting of him to support a budget, but not the levy funding it. “I obviously supported that
in all respects,” he said. “I still struggle with the policy that allows us as a board to ... as I call it, ‘tax to the max.’ ... Capturing as much as we can should be offset by [cutting] some other expense items on the budget.” Swanson acknowledged that as state revenues – down about 15 percent since 2005, she said – and property tax values fell, taxpayers have had to shoulder a growing burden – about an 38 percent increase
in district tax rates. “It’s no surprise our local taxes have gone up,” she said during a discussion about the district’s 2013 financial audit earlier in the meeting. “Clearly the community is having to make up what the state is not providing. So while we’re talking about a levy and leaving dollars on the table ... it just gives sort of a reality check in terms of what we’re dealing with.”

BUSINESS NOTES Church names new Cantigny Park names new rity operations and membership director of Youth Ministries director of visitor services and volunteer programs. WHEATON – Gary United Methodist Church has named Wheaton College alumna Alexa Thomas as its new director of Youth Ministries, according to a news release from the church. Thomas studied youth ministry for her degree in Christian education at the college and previously worked as an after-school teacher at the Wheaton Bible Church.
Clive Serkin. He is a 17-yearold piano prodigy and lives in a super high-powered household. His dad is a conductor and his mom is way up in the National Institute of Health, and [Clive] is really wanting to do something different with his musical career than his parents planned ... But he wants to serve people ... he gets that in a private school where he does mentoring with children in low-income settings. Then, on his own ... he finds a new teacher ... It turns out to be a woman who is a world-famous pianist – Clare Cardiff. And she agrees to teach him but doesn’t want his dad to find out because she’s taking a break and giving back herself. And he falls in love with her, really in a different way, not a romantic way – he never really had a mom, so he is very interested in her. And she never had kids, so she ends up loving the kid like a son, so they end up falling in love. But in that, she is diagnosed with early onset dementia. Then it becomes a coming-of-age story seeing what kind of trajectory Clive can set for himself now that he’s on his own. The last third of the book looks at very high-level piano and what it’s like being one of those people having given their life over to all this.

Philbrick: The research took me a year ... I absolutely loved it. I did really enjoy learning about those people ... and the troubles many were dealing with at the heights of their careers. I tried to take some of that and build it into these people. Then I did a lot of work with dementia, family members who have [parents] who struggle with it and what their life is like. Really the idea of the book was to bring that knowledge to people in a fictionalized context so they could remember it and actually use it when their family is in that situation. There are resources in the back where people can get more scientifically based information ... I wanted people to get that and use that so there was a real application. I know as a writer and teacher that people remember better if there is a story. Lurz: What role does actual music play in the book? Philbrick: I had this vision that people would be able to hear the music I was listening to when I was working. And I have a very good publisher, so all our e-books have the music on them. So reading it in any format, iPad or whatever, you can touch the title on it that’s in bold and it plays. Lurz: November is Alzheimer’s awareness month. Are you doing anything to commemorate it? Philbrick: Since it is the month, we decided we should donate our royalties on the e-book because it has the music ... When I came to my publisher with the idea, they immediately said “yes, we’re going to match it.”

By Melissa Erickson More Content Now The weeks before the December holidays are filled with music and book releases sure to please culture lovers of all varieties. Here are a few of the most anticipated titles and their descriptions courtesy of Amazon.com.
BOOKS “So, Anyway …” by John Cleese In this rollicking memoir, Cleese takes readers on a grand tour of his ascent in the entertainment world, from his humble beginnings in a sleepy English town and his early comedic days at Cambridge University (with future “Monty Python” partner Graham Chapman), to the founding of the landmark comedy troupe that would propel him to worldwide renown. Available Nov. 4. “Lila” by Marilynne Robinson In this new American classic from the Pulitzer Prize– winning author of “Gilead” and “Housekeeping,” one of the greatest novelists of our time returns to the town of Gilead in an unforgettable story of a girlhood lived on the fringes of society in fear, awe and wonder. Revisiting the beloved characters and setting of “Home,” “Lila” is a moving expression of the mysteries of existence that is destined to become an American classic, and is already a National Book Award finalist. Available now. “Mrs. Bradshaw’s Handbook” by Terry Pratchett Subtitled “to travelling upon the Ankh-Morpork & Sto Plains Hygienic Railway,” this beautifully produced gift-sized hardcover with black and white illustrations is Pratchett’s guide to the railways of his 40th Discworld novel, “Raising Steam.” Authorized by Mr. Lipwig of the Ankh-Morpork and Sto Plains Hygienic Railway himself, Mrs. Georgina Bradshaw’s invaluable guide to the destinations and diversions of the railway deserves a place in the
luggage of any traveler, or indeed armchair traveler, upon the Disc. Available Nov. 25. “The Strange Library” by Haruki Murakami A fantastical illustrated short novel in which a lonely boy, a mysterious girl and a tormented sheep man plot their escape from the nightmarish library of this internationally acclaimed, best-selling author’s wild imagination. Available Dec. 2. “Revival” by Stephen King A dark and electrifying novel about addiction, fanaticism and what might exist on the other side of life. In a small New England town, over half a century ago, a shadow falls over a small boy playing with his toy soldiers. Jamie Morton looks up to see a striking man, the new minister. Charles Jacobs, along with his beautiful wife, will transform the local church. The men and boys are all a bit in love with Mrs. Jacobs; the women and girls feel the same about Reverend Jacobs — including Jamie’s mother and beloved sister, Claire. When tragedy strikes the Jacobs family, this charismatic preacher curses God, mocks all religious belief and is banished from the shocked town. Available Nov. 11.
MUSIC “1989” by Taylor Swift The seven-time Grammy winner continues her rise to pop stardom with the her fifth album, “1989,” which she calls her most sonically cohesive collection. The debut single, “Shake It Off,” was an immediate success, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. After being released Oct. 27, “1989” is sure to be a hit with Swift’s many fans. “Sonic Highways” by The Foo Fighters The Foo Fighters’ eighth album features eight songs that were recorded in some of America’s most iconic stu-
dios as the band traveled across the United States. Guest performers include Joan Jett, Rami Jaffee and Rick Nielsen. The making of the album, due Nov. 10, will be accompanied by an as-yet untitled HBO series documenting the eightcity odyssey during which the record was created. “Alpha Mike Foxtrot” and “What’s Your 20” by Wilco Nonesuch Records will release two new Wilco collections Nov. 17 in conjunction with the influential Chicago band’s 20th anniversary. The second, “What’s Your 20,” is a two-CD digital compilation of essential tracks culled from the band’s previously released studio recordings. “Christmas at Downton Abbey” The hit television series is making a play for the music charts with a 45-track double CD featuring a festive version of the show’s theme song in addition to traditional hymns and carols. Artists featured include “Downton” actors Elizabeth McGovern, Jim Carter and Julian Ovenden, who sings five songs. Christmas in Elmhurst
T
he holiday season has arrived, and millions of people across the globe will be celebrating Christmas with their families and friends. The following are some interesting tidbits to share with your loved ones this holiday season. • Each year, more than three billion Christmas cards are sent in the United States alone.
Genuine Alex and Ani Positive Energy in Elmhurst exclusively
• In 350 AD, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25 the official celebration date for the birth of Jesus Christ. Many historians and theologians have surmised that Christ really wasn’t born this time of year, thanks to imagery and information from the Bible. • Christmas carols began as an English custom called “wassailing.” Individuals toasted neighbors to a long and healthy life. • Despite the common tale that three wise men paid homage to baby Jesus, the Bible never specifically calls out a number. Similarly, there’s no specific indication that they visited the infant Jesus. Their visit may have occurred when Jesus was older.

• Santa Claus’ modern look was inspired by writings from The Knickerbockers of New York and imagery from Clement Clarke Moore’s “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” Moore denied authoring the famous poem for 15 years after it was published anonymously, feeling the poem was beneath his talents. • Santa has his own official postal code. It’s H0 H0 H0. • The song “Jingle Bells” was originally written for Thanksgiving and not Christmas. People loved it so much that the lyrics were changed to fit Christmas. • Christmas trees typically grow for 15 years before they’re cut and sold. This means the trees sold today were likely planted in 1999. • Christmas was not declared an official holiday in the United States until June 26, 1870. • Before turkey, the traditional Christmas meal served in England was a pig’s head and mustard. • Male reindeer tend to shed their antlers in the winter. This means Santa’s reindeer are likely female. • Christ may have been born in a cave rather than a manger. According to the gospel of Luke, the shepherds that helped find shelter for Mary to give birth kept their flock in a cave. The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is built over a cave called the Grotto of the Nativity, where Jesus is believed to have been born. • Many people may be less inclined to stand under mistletoe waiting for a kiss if they knew what “mistletoe” means in the ancient Germanic language. It literally means “dung on a twig,” for the bird who eats the berries and then leaves seeds in droppings to propagate new plants. • Each holiday season, PNC Wealth Management calculates the costs of the gifts in the song, “The 12 Days of Christmas.” The price index for the gifts went from $12,673 in 1984 to more than $24,000 in 2011. The most expensive gift is the swimming swans.

The only secret you need to know for successful holiday meal planning
(BPT) - You don't need the juggling skills of a big-top performer in order to host a successful holiday gathering. Careful planning, time management and an eye for adding quick and easy 'homemade' touches will make your gathering one for the memory books, while still having plenty of time to enjoy the company of your guests. Don't let poor planning leave you cooped up in a hot kitchen while everyone else revels in the joys of the season. "The secret to holiday meal time-management is simple: Know where to spend and know where to save, without sacrificing the homemade taste" says Victoria Hudgins, an entertaining expert. "Reducing time spent on certain aspects of the meal can allow you to invest more in other areas. For example, instead of spending hours making a homemade dessert, consider a high-quality store-bought pie and some whipped topping to put your own special touches on at home and achieve the homemade look and taste."
What to do with the time you save: Invest in making a main course that will leave guests impressed and full. The extra hour you save on dessert prep could be just enough time to add flare to the turkey, holiday ham or even some knock-out steaks. Save on appetizers: Appetizers set the tone for the meal, so they need to be appealing. On the other hand, you don't want guests to fill up on them and have no room left for the main course. Keeping appetizers light and simple saves room in guests' tummies and saves you time, too. Serve simple two-ingredient appetizers or even storebought options to minimize prep time. What to do with the time you save: Put the time-savings toward more sophisticated side dishes. Along with traditional family favorites like stuffing and mashed potatoes, try something new that might require a bit more prep and longer cooking time, such as a winter squash
Save on topping off your holidays dishes: No one wants to serve dull dishes, and you don't have to spend a lot of time to add pizzazz. Simple touches, like adding Reddi-wip, can transform a variety of dishes. For example, basic eggnog gets a pop of mint flavor and festive color with Reddi-Wip peppermint chocolate egg nog. A whoosh of topping sprinkled with crushed peppermint candies creates a joyful touch on this jazzed-up holiday favorite. Best of all, adding this real cream goodness is just 15 calories. What to do with the time you save: Add more pizzazz to holiday decorating. Create a stunning centerpiece for the table featuring holiday items like fresh pine branches, scented pine cones, pillar candles in holiday colors and even Christmas balls. Incorporate festive touches in table settings, such as napkin holders made from a single artificial poinsettia blossom and holiday ribbon, chair covers in holiday patterns, and place card holders made from pine cones. Save on invitations. Instead of the time and money you would invest in choosing, preparing and mailing paper invitations, use e-invitations instead. It's easy to find free online services that allow you to create and send digital invitations, and many even track responses and maintain an up-to-date guest list. What to do with the time you save: Perfect your holiday playlist. Holiday music playing in the background can underscore the mood of your holiday event. With the time you've saved on invitations, you'll have plenty of opportunity to peruse online playlists and find the perfect mix of holiday songs - traditional, instrumental, country or contemporary - to accompany the festivities. "Getting ready for holiday guests doesn't have to be stressful and time-consuming," Hudgins says. "Substitutions like frozen desserts, additions such as whipped topping, and some smart time management can help you make the most of your prep time, so that you have more precious moments with those you love."
CD • Thursday, November 20, 2014 • mysuburbanlife.com • Suburban Life
Victoria offers these tips on how to balance meal prep time: Save on an already "homemade" dessert: The last course of the meal is your final chance to wow guests, but many of the most impressive holiday desserts are also the most time-consuming to prepare. You can serve an outstanding dessert with virtually no prep time and without losing the truly homemade taste, thanks to frozen brands like Marie Callender's. Along with the homemade scent and flavor, Marie's starts your 'homemade' pie for you, allowing time to add your own special touches such as sugar cookie cutouts placed on the pie before baking. For additional homemade elements, be sure to choose varieties that have those special touches you would add if you were doing the baking - like handpicked apples and hand-placed chocolate curls.

‘NOG THIS is how eggnog should taste
By Emily Arno Relish
There seem to be two camps around Christmastime — those who adore eggnog and those who abhor it. Naturally, we find ourselves on the side of adoration, but with all those soupy, sickeningly sweet variations available on marketplace shelves, we can see the haters’ point. That’s not eggnog. Real eggnog is rich, velvety and frothed to perfection. So this year, brew your ‘nog from home and don’t cut corners with cheap brandies or rum. Think of it this way — if you won’t drink it straight, it’ll probably spoil your concoction. Also keep in mind that spicy eggnog flavorings can easily go beyond the mug. Integrate leftovers into our cleverly delicious Eggnog Spice Bundt Cake.
Holiday Eggnog Yields 7 cups • 6 whole eggs • 2 egg yolks • 1 cup granulated sugar • 4 t sea salt • 3 cups whole milk • 1 T vanilla extract • 1 to 2 cup bourbon whiskey • 1 to 2 t freshly ground nutmeg • 1 cup heavy cream • 4 cup vanilla sugar (or plain granulated sugar) Combine eggs, egg yolks, sugar and salt in a heavy-bottom sauce pot. Whisk until smooth, then stir in milk. Cook and stir over low heat until custard is cooked to about 165F, or until thick

My friend’s only regret about her skillet was she couldn’t finish it. The crispy breakfast potatoes with warm soft centers were just too filling. The chilaquiles did not disappoint. We chose to top off the mixture with a pair of scrambled eggs. The light, fluffy eggs paired excellently with the pulled pork and queso fresco. While I liked the red salsa, my
personal taste preference was the tangy salsa verde. The brunch menu, offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, includes sweet dishes such as strawberry cheesecake French toast served with fresh berries, creme anglaise and whipped cream. There’s a full selection of morning cocktails, and our server told us the house Bloody Mary is handmade with the restaurant’s own recipe. Specialty Lavazza coffee drinks also are featured.
We stopped in on a Saturday, but on Sundays, a pianist plays the sleek baby grand tucked in the corner from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, live jazz and other entertainment starts at 7 p.m. The dinner menu entices with charcuterie, crab cakes, steak, and Cajun-inspired shrimp and scallops with andouille, bell pepper and cheese grits, one of many gluten-free choices. BOLINGBROOK – It was a crisp autumn morning when my friend and I walked into Sage Kitchen + Bar in Bolingbrook. The warmth of the restaurant was welcome after the chilly air, and the sun shone through tall windows along the walls of the attractive, contemporary space. We read the menu, debating what we should have for brunch. With some friendly advice from our server, we made our picks. My friend took advantage of the build-your-own skillet option, choosing to top her breakfast potatoes with spinach, cheddar, portobello mushrooms and the crowning touch of a pair of sunny-sideup eggs. Other possible toppings included bacon, bell peppers, goat cheese, red onions, Tasso ham, tomatoes, avocado, andouille, chicken and turkey. Any of these also can be tossed into a custom omelette. I went for the Sage breakfast sandwich, a pretzel flatbread loaded with scrambled eggs, bacon, spicy mayo and avocado. I chose breakfast potatoes on the side, but Parmesan fries are another option. We also had to try the chilaquiles. The bowl of corn tortilla chips tossed with black beans, roasted corn, queso fresco, pulled pork and eggs any style sounded too good to pass up. Our server asked if we’d like salsa verde or red salsa but kindly accommodated our request to have both on the side. As we chatted about our weekend plans, the shops at The Promenade tempted us from just beyond the windows. Our server stopped by to make sure we didn’t need anything else while we waited for our brunch, which fueled us for the rest of the day. My Sage breakfast sandwich tasted delicious. The pretzel flatbread was a favorite part of the meal, lending so much to the bacon and egg classic combo. As for the spicy

St. Francis celebrates winning the IHSA girls volleyball class 3A championship game Saturday at Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena.
St. Francis volleyball wins third straight Class 3A state championship By JAY SCHWAB jschwab @shawmedia.com NORMAL – St. Francis girls volleyball coach Peg Kopec was musing about Mix it up at Lunch Day at St. Francis, in which students are encouraged to sit at different lunch tables than usual to interact with new people. She spoke in the context of a different postseason path that allowed the Spartans to meet Joliet Catholic in Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A state championship match rather than in sectional play, but the cafeteria imagery is versatile for the Spartans’ volleyball program, which continues to take everyone’s lunch money throughout the state.
The Spartans powered past the Angels 25-18, 25-23 to win their third straight 3A state championship and 11th state title under Kopec. Spartans senior Sarah Muisenga said she had no question St. Francis would finish the job Saturday when she walked into Redbird Arena. “No. I could feel it,” said Muisenga, who supplied consecutive kills to open the second set. “Everyone was just so pumped and excited.” Junior outside hitter Molly Haggerty, the Spartans’ most intimidating player, came to the team’s rescue when the second set tightened late. Haggerty drilled kills to put the Spartans ahead 24-22 and then
to close out the championship after the Angels inched within 24-23. Haggerty considers each year of the Spartans’ threeyear reign distinctly delightful. “Last year obviously was really special playing with my sister and winning with Maddie,” said Haggerty, who eventually will follow Maddie Haggerty to play collegiately at Nebraska. “And then this year for sure, winning with all the seniors. … I love them, I’ve known them since I was young, and especially Mary Boken. We’ve played together since we were 12 and that was our last game ever playing together, so this was definitely a big game and it meant a lot.”
St. Francis (38-4) roared to an 8-1 lead to open the match, and Joliet Catholic (25-17) came no closer than four points the rest of the first set. Haggerty led the Spartans with nine kills while Boken and Kamryn Malloy added eight apiece. Boken, a fouryear varsity player and Clemson recruit, gushed about her experience in the program, which included four state medals, beginning with a thirdplace finish as a freshman. “I could not be any more grateful that I have been a part of this program,” Boken said. “Every one of my teammates throughout the years and all of my coaches have really shaped me as a person. When I was
a freshman, I rarely talked, I really didn’t know what I was doing, I was really timid, and now I’m a totally different person.” Daniele Messa notched 28 of St. Francis’ 30 assists, and Haggerty (seven digs) and Malloy (six digs) demonstrated their versatility with solid defense. Breese Mater Dei, the Spartans’ semifinal victim Friday in a three-setter, won third place over Montini. The Spartans project to be bumped up to Class 4A next year as the IHSA implements its new success factor. Safe to say the rest of Class 3A wouldn’t mind the Spartans strutting into a new cafeteria.

Wheaton Bank and Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life Sports Editor Jason Rossi about his receiving corps, Hanson’s big day and running a new spread offense this season.
Rossi: What’s it been like running a spread offense this season? Bobowski: Last year on JV, it was a completely different offense, and two years ago, it was wing-T, so we’ve pretty much experienced every offense out there so far in our careers. But coach [Mike] Fitzgerald and the rest of the coaches have done a great job helping us get better every
week and get used to the offense.
Rossi: What’s the key to succeeding in a new offense? Bobowski: I think it’s just preparation. Preparation, focus, a lot of hard work by everyone, watching film and doing what we have to do on our assignments. We know the guy next to us is going to be there for us.

Wheaton South’s storybook season ends in quarterfinal By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The captivating seven-week run by the Wheaton Warrenville South football team came to an end on Saturday, but not without a fight against one of the top teams in the state. While the final score was a 23-6 loss to Providence in a Class 7A quarterfinal that ended the Tigers’ season and sixgame winning streak, the contest hung in the balance until late in the fourth quarter. “After being 1-4, do you know how close we were to turning this around and being right there in the semifinals?” WWS coach Ron Muhitch said. “I feel bad for the kids since they worked extremely hard to get that back. Their backs were against the wall for the last eight weeks and we were playing extremely good football.” The visitors trailed 2-0 at halftime, and later closed to within 9-6 early in the fourth on an 81-yard touchdown pass from Michael Stebbins to Keishawn Watson. But a pair of touchdown runs by the Celtics over the final seven minutes proved to be too much to overcome. Up to that point, the Tigers defense had done an outstanding job against Providence’s high-powered offense, which has scored 33 or more points in nine games this fall. The Tigers limited the Celtics to 11 first downs and 282 total yards, far below the norms. Jake Kyllonen and Jasper

Wheaton Warrenville South’s Michael Stebbins drops back to pass against the Providence Celtics on Saturday at Providence High School in New Lenox. Romeo each had interceptions. “We had an outstanding defensive effort all year long,” Muhitch said. “It was a great year and this was just an outstanding opportunity for us.” On offense, Wheaton Warrenville South was seriously hampered by injuries. Top rusher Jonathon Johnson, who gained 172 yards on the ground in a round-two win over Normal, was injured on his first carry and did not return. Fellow running back Michael Campos, already bothered by a hurt ankle, tried to give it a go but didn’t last long. As a result, starting QB Josh Prueter ended up moving to running back with Stebbins taking over under center. “When we had to use Josh
(Prueter) at running back, we were scrambling,” Muhitch said. “If Jonathan had not gotten hurt, the game would have changed completely, especially with how well our defense was playing. The first play completely changed things for us. “We had a big chance when it was 9-6 with 10 minutes left. We might have panicked a little bit offensively. But we just didn’t have the people to run the normal offense. So we had to kind of go to a pick-up offense of throw and catch and we did catch them once, but we needed some more plays like that to make it happen, and it just wasn’t going to be.”
Second-quarter outburst sends Spartans into semis By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com WHEATON – The last time St. Francis’ football team made it to the state semifinals, the season culminated with a state title in 2008. The Spartans are back in the state semis following a 41-14 win against Hinsdale South in a Class 6A quarterfinal, but Clint Bobowski and his teammates aren’t looking at a state berth yet, even though they are on the cusp. “It means a lot,” Bobowski said. “It’s been a while since we’ve been this far, but we’re not satisfied. It’s a great accomplishment to get through the quarterfinals, but we just want one more each week.” St. Francis (10-2) scored four second-quarter touchdowns to pull away from the Hornets. Steven Fassnacht opened the scoring with a 9-yard run early in the first quarter, then Bobowski tossed touchdown passes to Matt Hanson, Tom Petrando and Chris Smith in the second quarter as the Spartans led 34-7 at intermission. Making it to the semifinals, where St. Francis will face off against a high-powered Nazareth team that won the East Suburban Catholic Conference, is an accomplishment in itself. Doing so in Mike Fitzgerald’s first year as head coach is even

more impressive. “We tell our kids all the time, ‘If you want things to happen, you have to believe in it,’” Fitzgerald said. “I think a lot of people on the outside might be surprised, but they don’t realize how hard these kids have worked and how committed they were in the offseason. “Something like this isn’t just a fluke. It doesn’t just happen. It’s a lot of hard work the kids put into it, and it’s a testament to what they’ve done to get here.” Four Nazareth offensive lineman have Division I offers, plus a few skill players are drawing college interest. The Spartans may not have that amount of next-level talent, but they do have solid senior leadership setting the tone. “We have a very talented senior class who have been playing together for a long time, and it’s been their goal [to get here], but they’re not satisfied,” Fitzgerald said. “They want to keep going and keep getting better each week.”
